Sacrifices sound like a cheat code: You sin and you rebelled against God and your soul gets tarnished. By the strict letter of the law, sin ought to be an executable offense. But God has mercy: Bring a sacrifice and slaughter the animal and you will be expiated. Instead of you dying, the animal will in your stead. Sin is easily remedied with a sacrifice. But how is that fair? If I sinned, I need to atone for it myself. How does sacrificing the animal solve the problem? -How does codependency contribute to burnout in therapists? -What is ‘misattunement' and how can we better understand it's impact during our childhood? -Why is community so fundamental in healing our codependency? Welcome to Episode 118! This week, we are greeted with the presence of Monica Helvie, LMFT, to discuss burn out in therapists. Monica describes what codependency looks like in overworked and burnt out professionals: contorting, insecurity, self-doubt, and maintaining a facade of competence. We explore how our experiences in childhood and being over-attuned to others may make us more vulnerable to burnout as working adults. Monica emphasizes how having a community is fundamental in our healing and offers ways we can start to form our own. We conclude with hearing some tips from Monica on how to address burnout in our lives. It's a must-listen! More on this week's guest: Monica Helvie is an LMFT and trauma coach for audacious, overworked and burned out therapists. She helps her clients find their inner badass again with insight and connection. She uses trauma informed, body based interventions to help healers break through their burnout and achieve authentic alignment with their best self. www.monicahelvie.com  Freebie from Monica: Core Wounds Workbook → https://monica-helvie-s-school.teachable.com/p/released-core-wounds-workbook  More deets on the episode:  We begin with hearing Monica's definition of codependency: when an individual has learned it's safer to attune to the needs of others. Codependents often experience a lot of guilt and shame in response to their needs not being met and then internally make meaning out of it. Monica describes misattunement and how, unfortunately, codependents often develop an internal perception of what they have to do to survive where they minimize their needs. Monica shares with us about codependency in her own life and ways she overattuned to her parents. In her effort to develop safety, awareness, and repair in her relationships, she created a template for how to interact with others and then took that to everyone in adulthood. She turned into the hero, the fixer, the competent one.  We shift to Monica's specialty: working with burnt out therapists. Monica lists the common traits: contorting, guilt, shame, self-doubt, insecurity, isolation, and projecting resilience/independence/competence. These traist then often contribute to burnout, exhaustion, imposter syndrome, and isolation.  How does Monica help therapists combat burnout and find their inner badass again? Monica emphasizes how therapists have a deep craving for connection and creativity. In order to help them be their authentic and honest self, she empowers them to stop settling for bad work environments. She helps them cultivate radical responsibility, get in touch with their values, and ask the big question: what do I want for me? She offers a community to her clients and tells us why and how we can start to cultivate our own community.  Thanks for coming Monica! And thank you for being here dear listener! #178: What is Gender Dysphoria? Ken Zucker, Clinical Psychologist

Watch this episode: https://youtu.be/H8kJFn23MWAI've always been interested in the topic of Gender Dysphoria (GD) and Conversion Therapy. I am noticing many are making sweeping statements on GD and what the implications for youth are. I wanted to explore the topic more with one of the most well-renowned researchers and Clinical Psychologists on the topic: Ken Zucker.Who is Ken Zucker?Kenneth Zucker is a Canadian psychologist and researcher who has studied and treated gender identity issues, including gender dysphoria, for many years. He is known for his work in the field of gender identity development in children and adolescents, and his approach to treatment has been controversial.Zucker is the former head of the Gender Identity Service at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Canada, and has published numerous articles and books on gender identity development and treatment. His approach to treatment has been criticized by some in the transgender community who feel that his methods, which included encouraging children to conform to their assigned gender, were harmful and outdated. In 2015, an external review of the CAMH gender identity clinic found that some of Zucker's practices were not in line with current standards of care for transgender people, and he was subsequently dismissed from his position at the clinic. Since then, Zucker has continued to publish and speak on the topic of gender identity development and treatment, but his work remains controversial and continues to be the subject of debate in the scientific and transgender communities. What is Gender Dysphoria?Gender dysphoria is a medical term used to describe the distress or discomfort that some people experience when the gender they were assigned at birth does not match their gender identity. In other words, a person with gender dysphoria may feel that their biological sex (male or female) does not correspond to the gender they feel they are (male, female, or non-binary).Gender dysphoria can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including feeling uncomfortable with one's body, experiencing anxiety or depression related to gender identity, and feeling a strong desire to live as a gender different from the one assigned at birth. It is important to note that gender dysphoria is not the same as being transgender. While many transgender people experience gender dysphoria, not all do, and experiencing gender dysphoria does not necessarily mean that someone is transgender. Gender dysphoria is considered a medical condition and can be treated through a variety of means, including therapy, hormone therapy, and gender-affirming surgery. What are Some of the Behaviours Children Exhibit that May Lead to a Diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria?Children who experience gender dysphoria may display a range of characteristics that indicate their discomfort or distress with the gender they were assigned at birth. These characteristics may include:A persistent and strong desire to be of the opposite gender or a gender that is different from the one assigned at birth.Strong feelings of discomfort, anxiety, or distress about their assigned gender.Preference for clothing, toys, or activities typically associated with the opposite gender.Insistence on being addressed by a name or pronoun that matches their gender identity, rather than their assigned gender.Rejection of clothing, toys, or activities typically associated with their assigned gender.Distress or discomfort about their physical body, especially during puberty.Social isolation or difficulty fitting in with peers of their assigned gender.Visit my NEW Website! https://openmindspodcast.com/Check out my Instagram/Tik Tok for daily posts: @openmindspodcast

She describes seeing codependency more in terms of boundaries and lack of boundaries. Codependents tend to focus on others and have difficulty with vulnerability and accountability with others. Rachel highlights the similarities and differences between codependents and highly-sensitive people, a specialty from her practice.  Rachel opens up about codependency in her own life and how that has affected her relationship with her parents in the past and present.  We hear Rachel's description and differentiation between codependents, empaths, and highly-sensitive people (what stands out to you? can you relate to the traits she describes?) Next, we shift gears to discuss the importance of yoga therapy and other types of somatic therapies to help treat codependency. Rachel shares with us how yoga therapy helps patients develop awareness of their mind, body, and spirit through a individualized practice of yoga poses. As a consequence to practicing yoga therapy, Rachel shares how her patients are able to become aware of their discomfort and then, when helpful, are able to sit with their discomfort.  Rachel emphasizes how her approach helps her patients become aware of their need for boundaries and appropriate distance/closeness in relationships. After the Torah delineates the instructions to assemble the materials for the construction of the Tabernacle in Parshas Terumah and the creation of the vestments of the high priest in Parshas Tetzaveh, Parshas Vayakhel outlines the implementation those plans: The massive fundraising efforts, and the actual building of the Tabernacle and its vessels under the auspices of Bezalel, and Parshas Pekudei wraps up the account of the construction of the Tabernacle, and its vessels and vestments. Again and again we read the refrain that everything was done precisely how God commanded Moses.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. The most calamitous, catastrophic, disastrous event in Jewish history - and arguably the most devastating event in all of human history - happens in our Parsha. A mere 40 days after the exultant, euphoric, transcendental Revelation at Sinai, the nation stoops to a very low nadir: they make a golden calf and begin to worship it. Most surprisingly, a central participant in this debacle was none other than Aaron the high priest. Why would Aaron, one of our nation's greatest men, agree to participate in the deification of a golden calf? By pondering this mystery we will discover both an answer to this puzzling question and a wonderful insight into the nature of reality, and how our perception of reality and the truth may be very different.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php.
