“God could not be everywhere, so he created Mothers.” This adage could not ring more true when it comes to the life of C.J. Taylor. Her life story could be made into an Oscar-winning biopic, and believe me, it's just a matter of time. She is a divorced single mom of three, an attorney, and a football coach with over 20 years of experience - she is the first female coach in the Snoop Dogg's youth football league, is the Former Director of Football Operations and Assistant Coach at Los Angeles Southwest College, and was an the Junior Varsity HEAD COACH and Assistant Coach on Varsity at Verbum Dei High School, a private all boys school in southern California. She has generated more than 45 millions dollars, sending hundreds of student-athletes to college on scholarships with over 300 NCAA programs including with Marist College, Univ. of Texas, TCU, Vanderbilt, FAMU, LSU, CAL, Boise State, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Syracuse and more. She has single handedly raised three tremendously successful children: her daughter Mi-Calynn is a California State Licensed Nurse who is on the front line during the COVID pandemic. Caylin is a 2017 Rhodes Scholar, 2014 Fulbright Scholar, D-1 Student-Athlete and graduate of Texas Christian University, 2019 graduate of Oxford University, a current PhD candidate, and author of the NY Times bestselling memoir, A Dream Too Big. Last but not least Chase Moore, an Archer Fellow, Children's Defense Fund recipient, and a recent D1Student-Athlete at the University of Texas at Austin victor of the 2019 Sugar Bowl, and member of the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Though the family has witnessed many glory days, life has not been easy. As written in an ESPN profile by Senior Writer Adam Rittenberg, CJ shares, "We used to have a five-bath, four-bedroom house and seven vehicles. We had what looked like the Cosby life. It was like a Monet: From a distance, it looked beautiful, but up close, it was all messed up." Inside those walls, C.J.'s now ex-husband, Louis Moore, was psychologically abusive toward her. She twice saw him physically abuse Caylin, who was just 2 at the time. In 2000, she left him, taking the children to live with her mother in Carson, on the border of Compton. She filed for divorce but still feared for their safety. She always told her kids: “We may live in the hood, but the hood doesn't live in us.”In 2004, she went to the hospital for heart surgery and came back in even worse shape. She was assaulted while being sedated, and later slipped into a depression. In 2009, her ex-husband was convicted of murder. He had a drunken argument with his girlfriend and fatally shot her with a rifle. After weeks of her kids feeding her and bathing her, her middle child told her, “Get up, Mom. You've got to live. You've got three kids. We need you!” That's exactly what she did and she continues to give every bit of her soul to her children every single day. Today, I am honored to welcome CJ Taylor and her youngest son Chase Moore to the show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Canes basketball head coach Jai Lucas joins the show and talks about Tru Washington's return and the impact he's making on the team. Lucas breaks down how the Canes have found ways to win in different ways and how they've turned things around after a tough season last year, albeit his first season coaching the team. He shares his approach to coaching—pushing his players hard while adjusting his style for different personalities—and stresses the importance of staying focused on each game rather than looking ahead to the NCAA tournament
Wanda Ford is a basketball standout. She is the first woman in NCAA history to amass 1500 basketball rebounds and she set the NCAA career record with 1,887 rebounds. She had 102 career double-doubles. Wanda was also one of the leading scorers in the game. She set the NCAA single-season scoring record with 919 points in 1986 (now eighth all time). Her average of 30.6 points per game in 1986 was the second highest at that time (now fifth all time). She also scored 54 points in a February 22, 1986 game against Missouri State, which was the second highest single-game scoring total up to that time (now tied for seventh all time). In this episode Wanda tells stories of her basketball in the early days of girls sports, what drew her to Drake University, her education there, traveling and living all over the place through basketball, and her late-night (until 2am!) basketball program. Wanda was a Women's Sports Foundation Player of the Year, a Kodak All-American, a three time Women's Basketball Yearbook All-America team selection, a two time MVP player of the year, a four-time first-team all-conference choice, ten times a league player of the week, a two time finalist for the Wade Trophy, and was named Coach of the Year in youth basketball by the City of Parma, where she is now a Phys Ed teacher. After graduating from Drake in 1986, Wanda played professional basketball for 16 years in Italy, Brazil, Sweden and Israel. She was part of seven league championship teams, and won such personal awards as Most Valuable Player and Newcomer of the Year, both in Israel. Wanda's number has been retired at both East Tech High School and Drake University. She was inducted into the Sports Legends of Cleveland Public Schools Senate League in 2022 for her high school career at East Tech High School. And in 2025 Wanda was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, which is how I learned about her outstanding career. Coach Tory and Coach Don welcome you to Episode 408 of Everything Fast Pitch. In “Did You Know,” they cover an NCAA rule change allowing all institutional staff in baseball/softball to provide technical and tactical instruction through the end of the current season, noting it may widen the gap between well-funded “super schools” and smaller programs. A listener question addresses a Sports Illustrated article about Texas Tech and the Matador Club, explaining NIL/tampering loopholes where collectives can contact players even when coaches cannot, and discussing how agents and NIL have changed recruiting. The lead-off segment is Part 2 of Tory's interview with former Georgia standout and pro player Sara Mosley, who recounts her determination to play at Georgia, a showcase moment after being doubted by Coach Tony, her high school adversity (broken hips, two knee surgeries, and her father Bob Mosley's death junior year), and how those experiences reshaped her purpose. She describes COVID-era disruptions at Georgia, the team's run to the Women's College World Series after a difficult SEC season, and excitement about Georgia's new facility. Sarah discusses the challenging transition from college to pro softball (including playing in Chattanooga and with the Vibe), her Four in One Sports Christian-themed batting gloves and matching glove, and her move into coaching travel ball and taking a coaching job at her high school. In the cleanup segment, Tory and Don note early Division I trends. Several mid-majors earning big wins , and they identify four teams separating themselves early—Texas Tech, Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma—citing depth and pitching staffs. They also mention strong senior pitching across D1 and early struggles by some lower-half SEC teams, plus Nebraska as dangerous but with early losses that could affect seeding. The coaching tip addresses creating live batting practice without overusing team pitchers, suggesting scrimmage variations, front toss, small-group games, using older/guest pitchers or paid pitchers appropriately by age and timing, and balancing challenge with confidence. One of the hottest topics in college athletics turns out to be about nonprofits. This episode unpacks how nonprofit colleges and third-party NIL collectives support individual student athletes, the governance and tax questions that follow, and what the recent NCAA settlement means for oversight and compliance. We also look ahead to emerging federal regulation and how nonprofits might engage in shaping what comes next. Attorneys for this Episode · Tim Mooney · Victor Rivera Why NIL Is a Nonprofit Issue · Define NIL: athlete rights to monetize their brand (name, image, likeness). · Distinguish third-party deals vs. institution-linked compensation · Why nonprofits are in the mix: NIL collectives, booster organizations, independent sponsorscirculating capital in the ecosystem. College athletics live inside nonprofit institutions — universities and colleges are almost all 501(c)(3)s. Enter third-party NIL collectives — many of which are also nonprofits, often organized as 501(c)(3)s or seeking that status. When nonprofits move money, governance and tax law always follow — NIL is no exception. In October 2025, a settlement in House v. NCAA settlement centralized review mechanisms (the College Sports Commission – or CSC) now oversee deal approvals & compliance. Ongoing federal intervention: the proposed SCORE Act is NCAA-backed and would stop athletes from being considered employees and shield the NCAA from the kinds of class action lawsuits that got us to the current NIL landscape How Nonprofits End Up Supporting Individual College Athletes Nonprofits can and do financially benefit specific individuals (scholarships, disaster relief, housing aid, fellowships). NIL collectives operate on a similar theory: Supporting athletes through appearances, community engagement, or promotional activity Often tied (explicitly or implicitly) to institutional athletic programs The tension: Supporting individuals is allowed But private benefit, inurement, and mission drift are still red lines Issue with compensating individuals using their "fair market value" Key question for nonprofits: Are we advancing a charitable purpose (legal) or just subsidizing compensation (questionable)? Governance Questions Nonprofits Can't Ignore Board-level responsibilities Mission alignment How does athlete support further the stated charitable purpose? Is this education, community engagement, economic equity or something else? "Amateur athletics" does a lot of heavy lifting here, but sometimes the collectives compensate the athletes for promoting charitable events/causes. Board oversight Who approves NIL strategy? How are conflicts of interest handled (especially boosters, alumni, donors)? Controls and accountability Criteria for selecting athletes Documentation of services provided Fair market value analysis Transparency What are donors told? What is disclosed publicly vs. internally? Regulation on the Horizon After the NCAA Settlement The NCAA settlement signals: More centralized oversight More formal review of NIL arrangements Less tolerance for "wink-and-nod" structures Likely regulatory pressure points: Standardized deal review Clearer definitions of permissible activity Increased scrutiny of nonprofit status and operations Should Nonprofits Weigh In on What Comes Next? The NCAA settlement last fall quieted things down by creating reporting structures, arguably with some teeth. But as things evolve, there's more space for nonprofits in particular to notice. This isn't the first time Bo Jackson has talked with Chris Long. Bo was teammates with Howie Long with the Los Angeles Raiders and Bo tells Chris that Howie was Bo's alarm clock before NFL games. Bo would take a nap before kickoff and Howie would come by right before the team ran onto the field and wake him up, saying 'it's time to go.' Bo revealed plenty of other tremendous stories from his NFL and MLB careers. He tells Chris about the time the White Sox plane caught on fire in the air. Bo would sometimes have a beer in the clubhouse during Royals games to break out of slumps. And of course Bo talks about his Auburn career, spurning Alabama and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of his principles and opens up about his new podcast that sheds light on mens health. Enjoy the episode and the amazing stories from one of best athletes in professional sports history.
