Unfortunately, Dave can't make it this week (we miss you), but we (Evan and Megan) carry on in his stead. First we cover Michael Angarano's dramedy SACREMENTO (2:14), where a free-spirited guy (Angarano) cons his anxiety-ridden best friend (Michael Cera) into taking a road trip to, you guessed it, Sacramento. The movie, which co-stars the vastly underused Maya Erskine and Kristen Stewart, has the occasional poignant moment or funny line but is too scattershot for our taste. Next, we review Christopher Landon's thriller DROP (23:02), which stars Meghann Fahy as a widowed, domestic abuse survivor and mother who is terrorized by anonymous threatening messages on her first date in years. We really dig its central mystery, lead performance, intense atmosphere, and sharp commentary on abuse. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Martha Coolidge's 1985 comedy REAL GENIUS in honor of the late Val Kilmer!
Val Kilmer was one of the most eclectic and enthralling actors of his generation and one of the movies that heavily showcased this is this week's movie, “The Salton Sea.” Kilmer showed he could be wacky, like in “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius” or deadly serious like in “Spartan” and “The Doors.” In “The Salton Sea” he sort of combines those two and it makes for an entertaining and captivating performance. If you want a movie that leads you down one path, en route to setting an expectation, just to subvert it, and does it multiple times, “The Salton Sea” just might be for you. Kilmer plays Danny Parker, a trumpet player, who has a faithful marriage to a beautiful wife until that all comes to an end. Afterwards, his life becomes a drug-filled downward spiral as he joins the perpetual night party of the tweaker to cope, or is that why he's really doing it? We don't know. He's also a confidential informant for a couple of L.A. detectives who want him to set up a maniacally, murderous drug dealer named Pooh Bear. This is a drug dealer known for killing people suddenly just because he doesn't like the tone of their voice. Also, Danny is told that he's been marked for death for something he didn't do, so things went from beautiful and romantic to pitiful and manic really quick. Is Danny Parker for real, or is he someone else? Will he survive the vortex of violence he finds himself in? Is it worth finding out in this lesser known Val Kilmer movie? Check out my spoiler-free review on this episode to find out! “The Salton Sea” also stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Goldberg, Luiz Guzman, Doug Hutchison, Anthony LaPaglia, Glenn Plummer, Peter Sarsgaard, Deborah Kara Unger, Chandra West, BD Wong, R. Lee Ermey, Shalom Harlow, Sherry Knight, Meat Loaf, Azura Skye, Josh Todd and Danny Trejo. In this episode, we pay our respects to the legendary actor Val Kilmer. Jason's favorite actor has always been Val Kilmer, thanks to his all-time favorite movie: Real Genius. To honor Kilmer and his legacy, we dive into conversations about his impact on film and on us personally. “Best Friend of the Show,” Rob, joins Jason first to discuss many of Kilmer's iconic performances. Jason also chats with writer Stephanie Streisand (The Mighty Ones, The Detour), a friend of the show, about their shared love for Real Genius, Top Secret!, and how Kilmer's performances influenced her comedy. We end the episode with “Brother of the Show,” Trey. It's a heartwarming and fun tribute we hope all Val Kilmer fans find some comfort in. Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast! Our little store recently celebrated two separate milestones! Not only does March mark the one year anniversary of our fun little podcast, but this just so happens to be the 50th episode of the show, which means I (Rob "Flack" O'Hara), Ashley Thomas, and The Retroist have officially recommended 200 films for your viewing enjoyment. U hope you returned them all on time. For this week's show I had planned to do something that coincided with our show's anniversary… and right as I was walking the store's aisles looking for movies to recommend I learned of the untimely passing of Val Kilmer, which convinced me to change course. Kilmer will be remembered as one of the great actors of our time. From Batman to Willow, Kilmer was woven into the 80s and 90s. The hardest part about this week's show was narrowing my selections down to only four. Top Gun (1986)Ride into the danger zone with this classic from the 1980s starring Tom Cruise as Maverick, Kelly McGillis as Charlie, and Val Kilmer as the one and only Ice Man. When I was a teen I didn't know anyone who hadn't seen this film and yet today it seems many younger film fans skipped it. Featuring an all-star cast and a soundtrack full of hits that will “take your breath away,” Top Gun is a classic that remains watchable and relevant today. Real Genius (1985)In Real Genius, a group of brilliant college students are brought together to work on a project that someone may or may not have nefarious plans for. Val Kilmer is Chris Knight, a loveable, quirky genius who takes a fifteen-year-old genius named Mitch under his wings. Will the geniuses have what it takes to complete their project — and if they do, will they also be able to stop it? Real Genius remains one of my favorite 80s comedies of all time. A guy's gotta have his standards.Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)In this old-school pulp detective story dragged into the 20th century, a thief (Robert Downey, Jr.) and a private detective (Kilmer) work together to solve a murder — and then more murders… and then try to avoid getting murdered. This is a fantastic film, dripping with style and unexpected twists and turns. Sit back, relax, and try not to lose the plot… or a finger.Tombstone (1993)No tribute to Val Kilmer would be complete without this film, featuring his iconic performance as Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp's loyal friend. Also starring Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, and several others, Kilmer's performance in Tombstone will never let you forget who's your Huckleberry.Rest in peace, Mr. Kilmer. If you haven't seen any of these in a while (or at all) feel free to check one (or all) of them out — just don't forget to rewind your tapes and have them back on time to avoid late fees. Thanks for visiting our store over the past year. Business is booming and it looks like management will be renewing the lease for another year! Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. Memphis was told last week that the rainfall throughout the weekend would cause "generational flooding" in the Mid-South. We are now on the other side and we assess the damage and aftermath, how our listeners experienced it, and why many Memphians are upset at one local meteorologist. Also on the show, we break down the national "Hands Off" protests against President Trump, we react to a once-extinct species being brought back after thousands of years, and Rivera gives us his Gen Z movie review of Real Genius (1985). Why are so many of our decisions based on what's best for Israel? How about what's best for the people of this country? America First, right? But before you start hating, we got something to say about that too!Show NotesOpening Segment (00:00:00 - 00:03:15)* Intro Theme: The hosts kick off with a provocative analogy comparing U.S. foreign policy to a man prioritizing his "side chick" over his family, hinting at Israel's influence. They note this could be labeled anti-Semitic but dive in regardless.* Podcast Introduction: The hosts introduce themselves as the "two kings of the Rube Empire," proudly embracing labels like "right-wing extremists," "supernaturalists," and "Christian bigots." They set the tone for an unfiltered, high-energy discussion.* Banter: Lighthearted joking about locking the doors and soliciting donations, showcasing their irreverent style.Val Kilmer Tribute (00:03:15 - 00:13:36)* Val Kilmer's Passing: The hosts mourn Val Kilmer's death, speculating on his faith and sharing favorite roles:* Philosopher King: Loves Doc Holliday in Tombstone ("I'm your Huckleberry").* Iron King: Picks Moses in The Prince of Egypt for its depth and music.* Dusty: Highlights Kilmer's comedic role in Real Genius and his versatility in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.* Film Discussion: They explore Kilmer's range (Heat, The Doors, Willow, Top Gun), praising his ability to disappear into characters. Tangents include Tom Cruise's Oscar snubs and Scientology.* Aging Actors: The conversation shifts to other aging icons (Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, Dick Van Dyke), marveling at their longevity.Political Speculation (00:13:36 - 00:27:10)* Biden's Absence: The hosts question Biden's whereabouts, joking about a Weekend at Bernie's scenario with Kamala Harris.* Democratic Party: They identify Bernie Sanders and AOC as the current faces of the Democrats, predicting AOC might run for president in 2028 due to her age eligibility.* Trump's Coalition: Discussion on how Trump maintains his MAGA base amidst actions like Yemen bombings, which contradict his "no forever wars" stance. They critique the "they touched our boats" justification.* Future of the Right: Concerns about keeping principled conservatives (like themselves) in the coalition, suggesting figures like J.D. Vance or Thomas Massie as potential successors, though Massie's independence might alienate MAGA loyalists.* Immigration: Strong support for deporting violent illegal immigrants (e.g., MS-13), rejecting libertarian "slippery slope" arguments. They frame it as a principled stance on law and order.Lies, Trust, and Truth (00:27:10 - 01:45:05)* World War II Revisionism: The hosts challenge the narrative of WWII, arguing the U.S. didn't "win" but rather exploited Germany's defeat for its own gain, eroding trust in historical accounts.* Climate Change Skepticism: They note the fading climate change rhetoric, tying it to anti-Elon Musk sentiment and pointing out inconsistencies (e.g., Obama's oceanfront mansion).* Government Distrust: A recurring theme: Boomers trusted the government blindly due to limited information access, while modern generations, armed with the internet, see through the lies (e.g., oil abundance, not scarcity).* The Bible as Truth: They passionately argue the Bible is the only reliable truth amidst pervasive lies, citing evidence like mitochondrial DNA (Adam and Eve), flood fossils, and Red Sea chariots. This drives their mission to "wake people up."Reformation and Faith (01:41:31 - 02:02:00)* Printing Press Parallel: The hosts compare the internet to Gutenberg's printing press, both exposing lies and driving people to Jesus by making truth accessible.* Catholic Critique: They challenge Catholic practices (praying to Mary, saints, purgatory) as unbiblical, urging Catholics and Orthodox believers to read the Bible themselves. They predict this leads to Protestantism.* Protestant Issues: Acknowledge flaws like dispensationalism (a "red herring" discouraging long-term investment) and seeker-sensitive churches, but emphasize sola scriptura.* Unity in Christ: Despite denominational differences, they affirm Jesus as the sole focus of faith, not traditions or institutions.Final Thoughts (01:53:26 - 02:02:11)* Dusty: Debunks the "Trump third term" rumor as Democratic fearmongering, citing his age and constitutional barriers. Ties it to the assassination attempt, calling it miraculous and suspicious.* Philosopher King: Laments the lack of reasonable discourse, advocating for truth paired with love and hate for sin, rooted in trust in Jesus over failing institutions.* Closing Prayer (Dusty): A heartfelt prayer thanking God for truth and the chance to glorify Him.* Outro: The hosts sign off, encouraging listeners to engage and spread the word, reaffirming their service to "the King of Kings, Christ Jesus."Key Themes* Skepticism of Authority: Distrust in government, media, and historical narratives.* Biblical Truth: The Bible as the ultimate anchor amidst lies.* Political Critique: Balancing support for Trump with principled objections to his actions.* Cultural Commentary: Reflections on faith, masculinity, and societal shifts.Notable Quotes* "The Bible is the only thing that's true. Wake up." (Iron King)* "If you read that Bible... magically, you're going to become a Protestant." (Iron King)* "There's only one person who should rule you, and that is the King of Kings." (Philosopher King)Next Episode: Tune in next week for more unfiltered takes from the Rube Empire! This is a public episode. Drew has a lot of Canadian gun questions. Netflix has a new documentary on the Gilgo Beach killer called "Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. Some people are saying it focuses too much on the victim's families. The murders might have been solved faster if it wasn't for the ex-Suffolk County DA and the ex-police chief. Send us a textThis week, Vanessa focuses on managing stress, understanding the impact of yelling, and keeping up with evolving resume trends. Designed for educators transitioning to new career paths, this episode provides actionable insights and practical tips.In Our Segment on Stress Management: Vanessa talks about how yelling, whether literal or metaphorical, can activate stress responses such as fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, leading to feelings of anxiety, guilt, or withdrawal. Recognizing the emotional toll of yelling is essential for maintaining mental health. Strategies to help build resilience are detailed. Career Transition and Job Search: Vanessa advises replacing the “Competencies” section on resumes with a “Highlights” section to showcase 3-4 impactful skills or achievements. Keywords from job descriptions should be bolded to improve visibility in Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).The rise of short-form video resumes as a new standard for job applications is highlighted, encouraging listeners to prepare for this trend.Today's Teacher HackVanessa provides a practical hack for becoming comfortable with short-form videos, emphasizing that discomfort with self-viewing on video often stems from natural facial asymmetry and unfamiliarity with mirrored images. With regular practice, individuals can build confidence in their video presentations.Links!Montage from the movie, Real Genius LINK Connect with Vanessa Vanessa@TeachersinTransition.com Leave a voicemail or text at 512-640-9099 Connect with Vanessa on LinkedIn! It's a new year! Let's open it by celebrating the 40th anniversary of Real Genius. You deserve it! Mitch Taylor (Gabriel Jarret) is a 15-year-old prodigy who has been accepted into a university to work on a freakin' laser. He gets to work with legendary genius (and outlandish) Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) on this project. Mitch wants Chris to focus. Chris wants Mitch to loosen up. It's like a pair of opposite lasers. That's a thing, right? Meanwhile, some guy (Jon Gries) has been disappearing in their closet. Psssst. His name is Lazlo. Why were they designing this laser to begin with? HATHAWAY (William Atherton)! He must have a doctorate in being a scamp. He's been taking military funding for his department and using it for his house renovations. RTS sled down dorm hallways made of ice. Collin and Jeremy swim through mounds of popcorn. “Pop pop!”
Dude was awesome and is missed by the true entrepreneur.
We're back! We know it's been a rough few weeks, heck a rough year, for a lot of us. We decided this week's episode would be all about our TV & movie "comfort food". What's the rarest element? The element of surprise at finding an 80's teen comedy that doesn't make you go, “Uh-oh” in 2024. 1985's Real Genius might be that movie, but will our hosts give this college romp a passing mark?
You may know William Atherton from Day Of The Locust, The Hindenburg, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, and Real Genius or you may better remember him for vigorously questioning the environmental safety of ghost busting or for receiving a blow to the face which rings in a very Merry Christmas in Die Hard. Bill began his career on the stage, performing in Broadway plays by David Rabe, John Guare and Arthur Miller. The Ghostbuster and Die Hard franchises brought him to Hollywood and he joins us to discuss his fascinating history, his heroes and influences and his range of experiences with such performers as Anne Bancroft, George C. Scott, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, and Diane Keaton. Did you know that Bill sings What'll I Do in Nelson Riddle's Great Gatsby score!? He tells us all about it and talks about recognizing the greatness of Stephen Spielberg even as a baby director when Bill stared in Sugarland Express. He remembers how Anne Bancroft would not stop talking about Mel Brooks on the set of The Hindenburg, he shares what he learned from the casts of Lost and Desperate Housewives and he addresses the internet's most time-honored question, is Die Hard a Christmas movie?Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Will & Harper and Nobody Wants This on Netflix.Path Points of Interest:William AthertonWilliam Atherton on WikiWilliam Atherton on IMDBGift of DemocracyMedia Path PodcastNobody Wants This on NetflixWill and Harper - Netflix

Welcome back to a new school year and another episode of the The Video Store Podcast. Hope you've gathered your school supplies and movie rentals for back-to-school time. First up is a horror film that will remind you that no matter how tough your school might be, it could always be worse. It's 1977's Suspiria directed by Dario Argento. This classic film is the first in his Three Mothers trilogy. It's one of those films that shows just how scary going to school can be. There's horror, there's drama, but the good news is, your school probably isn't run by witches. With an iconic score by Goblin and incredible sound editing, Suspiria is a film that keeps you coming back every school year. The second film on our list this week is the Academy Award-nominated and winning film, Dead Poets Society from 1989. This film will have you seizing the day and standing on your desk shouting “Oh Captain, my Captain!” by the end. The film also focuses on the pressures young men face to have “success” and to suppress emotions back in 1959, and honestly, still today. It's a timeless classic that sets the mood for back to school. The third film on our list pairs well with our second—Mona Lisa Smile from 2003. While the film is sometimes called Dead Poets Society with girls, I think that undercuts the film. While yes, there are similarities, Mona Lisa Smile focuses on the pressures facing women in the early 50s, rather than men. Both perspectives are valuable, making it a great double bill with the previous film. Look for a cameo from singer Tori Amos in this one.The last film in our show this week is the 1985 comedy, Real Genius directed by Martha Coolidge. Starring Val Kilmer, Gabriel Jarret, William Atherton, Robert Prescott, and Michelle Meyrink, Real Genius is about some college students, including a child prodigy, who find out their school project is actually an illegal government project. Make some popcorn for this one. You'll be glad you did. We hope these selections will help you have a great start to the school year. Here's hoping your school year is filled with great teachers, great friends, plenty of popcorn, and 100% less murder than in Suspiria. Seven more movie reviews, let's go! Gee this is simply not the best batch. I said it. Today we start with (The Feminist and the Fuzz 1971) Barbara Eden stars with the good Morning America guy in this wacky film with some serious ideas that they bring into America's living room, giving us the representation, and radical crumb many were literally dying for, but you just, as always knew they were gonna mainstream a few steps back at the end, the price that you knew you were gonna pay. I remember that made for TV movie, the day my kid went punk, that came out just as me and three other 16 year olds started the first ever punk band in our suburban catholic town, boy was that film a let down. I'd personally say that it's worth a watch. It's on you tube, watch it then pop back and listen hmmmmmmm, maybe. Next is (Elvis on tour 1972). It looks and sounds cool. There is just a lot of Elvis music here, and I could use more interviews. Also I'm sure that the filmmakers must of felt quite bound and gagged about really reporting what the saw and heard, at least in my head cannon it seems that way. The famous rock story of Elvis getting denied his prescription at a pharmacy on the road because a sympathetic pharmacist saw the massive addiction of Elvis to pills, and Elvis's manager simply buying the pharmacy, is NOT here, how could it be. But I am sure it was all seen. Even with the puff piece attitude of this publicity thing you can see it pretty dang well. Next today we move on to (Snoopy come home 1972) This is the first of the trilogy of Charlie Brown feature films that were going to be covering for the pod, and the second in the film series after 1969's A boy named Charlie Brown. Look this is great and our discussion is fabulous I'm sure, I've seen this movie several times in my life SO it's more than ok that I fell asleep this time. Those other two lovelies can pick up my slack. There's dog and bird discrimination for Snoopy and Woodstock as they travel to visit a sick friend. Next is (Charlie Varrick 1973) and Garak from deep space 9 is here. Garak plays Harman Sullivan, a hot head bank robber who like Veruka Salt, wants it all now. We also gots Joe don Baker, Felicia Farr, and the coach of the bad news bears himself Walter Matthau. Lots of great characters here to including the dean from Animal House, in this gritty great stock 70's movie where, uh oh the bank robbers ripped off the mob. Whatever will they do? Let's talk talk talk about it shall we. Onward to (3 days of the Condor) Nows here's a popular 70's political thriller that your decade under the influence would love to time machine change a bit of. I love Robert Redford, he's cute, thoughtful and chooses rad projects, even now. See (The company you keep 2012) where he plays a former Weather Underground activist. But here in Condor he makes this icky decision to not just hand the amazing force of Faye Dunaway the dang gun after they get to her pad. Just pisses me off ok. Great directing and cinematography here. Would you like to know more. (The Hindenburg 1975) is up to bat now and let's just say that for me….George C Scott does NOT George C Scott enough, and the super cool Anne Bancroft is very under used, watch Turning point and Garbo speaks to compensate. The dick from Real Genius and Ghostbusters is good here, and I don't hate this, wait, the amazing director Robert Wise is also under represented here. ACK,,,,,,,, moving on finally to wrap this poop up with (Across the great divide 1976) Hey this is the one with the 2 kids, I dig this one. We reviewed the Sea Gypsies with Robert Logan a bit ago, and I was very surprised that he was in about 6 nature movies in the 70's. What is going on world. This one is waaaaay better than what's to come in my opinion. Ok I'm done, thank you very much for listening, please subscribe and give us some stars, and mayhems a sweet or not sweet review, it super helps, thanks.
