Dan has a full house this week with Sexton Sideshow founders Paula and Jim Minacci. As the sextons (or caretakers) of Old Swedes' Church in Philadelphia since 2000, they started having events featuring Philadelphia artists like Deadfellow, Low Cut Connie, and EJ Simpson's long running one-man 'Jesus Christ Superstar' production. Paula and Jim talk with Dan about how they got into doing shows, being inspired by their son Dylan's journey into the music business, offering up their home to travelling artists from all over, and this month's big event: a musical tribute to 'O Brother Where Art Thou', now in it's 7th year. They even bring Philadelphia singer-songwriter (and past 25 O'Clock guest) Emily Drinker to talk about the show and all that goes into making it happen (the show features almost two dozen Philadelphia area performers and artists). Sexton Sideshow Presents: 'O Brother Where Art Thou' is December 13th and 14th at Old Swedes' Church at Christan St and Columbus Blvd in Philadelphia. Tickets are available at the church's website and on the the Sexton Sideshow Instagram.
Will Brown, forced to recently change his stage moniker due to his own name being simply too common to bear, talks with Dan about his new EP, 'Bedroom Prog'. An accomplished guitarist, drummer, and musical gun-for-hire, Will talks about the EP taking about 5 years of shaping, his work with groups like Deadfellow, Rylan Brooks, and Trap Rabbit, and his new 'indie-rock soul food' diet while in self-isolation. Returning to the table, Hayden Sammak, aka Deadfellow, talks about his upcoming record, 'Millennials In Love (And Other Pre-Apocalyptic Standards)'. Recorded in Nashville with Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket) and Robert Crowell (ex-Deer Tick), and in Philadelphia with Phil Nicolo (Studio 4), the record is out 9/14. Hayden and Dan chat about working in the studio with your heroes, management changes, and the joys of being friends with some really high class musicians.
Hayden had to come twice to the studio, but in the end, it was all worth it for a great conversation with the man behind the Deadfellow personae. Dan and Hayden talk about his antics going to school in Florida (disclaimer: no animals were harmed), his need to create a body of work that meant something to him, and how the current immediacy in our culture makes it hard to have a proper reaction to anything. The newest Deadfellow record, 'Mescalifornia: A California Dream' is out on 6/23, go to his his website at deadfellow.com to get it.
Season 2 continues with Philadelphia-based artist Deadfellow. Josh talks with Hayden Sammak about his debut EP "Love Songs For The Contemporary Listener," living in a social media world, and Deadfellow's plans for a new EP. Meet Dan and Dan! Dan Reed, Music Director and Afternoon Host at WXPN/Philadelphia and Dan DeLuca, Music Critic and Columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer sit down on a bi-weekly basis to talk MUSIC! In 1972, Terry Dolan readied his debut self-titled album but for unknown reasons it was never released … until now. Terry recruited an incredible cast of musicians to play on the album including Rolling Stones touring pianist Nicky Hopkins, The Pointer Sisters, plus members of Journey, Steve Miller Band, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Terry passed away in 2012. The album was finally released in November of 2015 and Greg Douglass who played guitar on the album joins us to talk about this lost gem of an album on this podcast. It's a fascinating story, and Greg gives us firsthand look back at the process of recording the album.
