A certified coach and yoga teacher, Carmen brings a deeply human lens to people leadership at Crowell & Moring, a global law firm. Carmen shares how her work is addressing significant mental health risks in the legal profession, providing examples such as Unplug Time: 40 paid timecoded hours for employees to fully disconnect and reset. Carmen sees AI as something that should amplify humanity, not replace it. Fresh from the SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) conference in the US, attended by 26,000 HR professionals, Carmen reflects on three emerging themes: building trust and safety to experiment with AI, ensuring responsible and ethical AI use, and the rise of trust as a measurable business priority.  An immigrant from Venezuela, belonging is a defining thread in Carmen's leadership, expressed through initiatives such as STEP, the Staff Talent Empowerment Programme, which pairs high-potential business professionals with sponsorship and development opportunities to help unlock careers that might otherwise go unseen. For Carmen, the focus is always on preserving the humanity in how people work and lead, making space for vulnerability, empathy, dignity and connection, and allowing people to show up as they are, without masking or armour.  How HR Leaders Change the World Live! 11th November 2026 – London Book your early bird ticket now! When Brooklyn restaurateurs Doug Crowell and Ryan Angulo opened Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens in 2008, they created more than a restaurant—they built a neighborhood institution. Known for dishes like Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Cheddar Waffles and towering Popovers, the restaurant became one of Brooklyn's most beloved dining destinations. They followed it with French Louie, a warm bistro that blends French influences with the spirit of a Brooklyn neighborhood restaurant. In Kindness & Salt: Recipes for the Care and Feeding of Your Friends and Neighbors (Grand Central Publishing, 2018), Crowell and Angulo share more than 100 recipes from both restaurants, along with the philosophy that has guided their work for decades. The title reflects the two principles they believe are essential to every great meal: kindness, expressed through genuine hospitality, and salt, the attention to flavor that brings food to life. Alongside signature dishes, the book offers advice on entertaining, cocktails, wine, and the art of making guests feel welcome. Kindness & Salt stands out among restaurant cookbooks because it is as much about community as it is about cooking. Part cookbook and part neighborhood memoir, it captures the relationships among restaurateurs, staff, regulars, and the communities that grow around a dining room. At its heart, the book argues that hospitality is every bit as important as the food on the plate. Doug Crowell joins New Books Network to discuss the origins of Kindness & Salt, the legacy of Buttermilk Channel, the continued success of French Louie, and what he has learned about restaurants, hospitality, and community over nearly two decades in Brooklyn dining. JD is the founder of Responsive Companies, a vertically integrated real estate platform supporting 50+ full-time teammates, managing nearly 1,400 units, and generating close to $30M in annual gross income. From Responsive Capital Ventures to asset management and home buying, JD walks through why staying in a tight niche, executing the basics at an elite level, and doing the unglamorous work every day wins long term. This conversation goes far beyond business. JD and Ben unpack the power of core values, culture as behavior (not posters), and the STABLE framework that drives every decision—from hiring and promotions to accountability and leadership. You'll hear why JD believes “boring, well-executed housing” creates lasting impact for working-class families, how disciplined routines compound over time, and why who you're becoming along the way matters more than the numbers on the scoreboard.
