Lanegan described Garwood as "one of his all time favorite artists" and working with him as "one of the best experiences of his recording life". Their debut collaboration album Black Pudding was released in May 2013.After a successful collaboration with Mark Lanegan, Heavenly announced it had signed Garwood in November 2014 and his next solo album Heavy Love would be released through the label on 9 February 2015. On Lanegan's 2017 US tour, Garwood performed as the opening act, as well as a sideman in Lanegan's band.In 2021, Garwood featured in Morcheeba's song “The Edge Of The World” which is the last song of their album Blackest Blue. ~ Wikipediahttps://dukegarwood.bandcamp.com/musichttps://www.instagram.com/dukegarwood dukegarwood.co.ukThe event in Vienna was organized and hosted by Delta Punkhttps://www.instagram.com/deltapunkCover photo: Interceptor Beyond

Daníel Hjálmtýsson - No Reception (feat. Aðalbjörn Tryggvason) from the 2022 self-released album Labyrinthia. While Daníel Hjálmtýsson's recorded work only dates back to 2020, he's made quite a splash in the past few years, perking the ears of his fellow Icelanders as well as a particular Seattleite - Kevin Cole. He recently caught their performance at Tremor Festival which is set at secret locations around São Miguel island in the Azores and has been said by some to be the “world's weirdest music festival.” So stunned by their performance, he had to share their music with the world. In November, Daníel Hjálmtýsson, which also includes Hálfdán Árnason and Skúli Gíslason, released their debut full-length Labyrinthia. The album leans into Nick Cave-esque gothic rock that Mark Lanegan, also a clear inspiration, cited as, “Neo-goth music that brings to mind the forbidding landscapes of his native Iceland. One can imagine him on a stage in a church-turned-dungeon somewhere in the Reykjavik underbelly.” I don't think I could possibly describe it better than Lanegan so I'll let him do the talking. Our Song of the Day is the lead single off Labyrinthia, “No Reception,” which features guest vocals from fellow Icelandic rocker, Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, of the long-running post-metal band Sólstafir. It's a slow-churner about the anxieties of loneliness and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Also, perhaps because I've recently binged the new Interview with a Vampire series, the words, “I'll never see another /I'll never see another /Day” seem like a song Louis might write. A melancholy ode to the plight of eternal darkness. The official video for “No Reception” debuts today, alongside our Song of the Day, and was directed, edited, and produced by Jónatan Leó. Greg Prato is a returning guest to talk about his brand new book “Lanegan”. Mark Lanegan is among the greatest voices of grunge rock's golden era. His unmistakable and instantly recognizable vocals can be heard on classic recordings on songs by Screaming Trees. He can also be heard on several songs by the band Queens of the Stone Age. He was a poet and an author of several popular books. Sadly, he endured addiction, hard living and health difficulties before passing away in February of 2022 at the age of 57. Prato pays tribute to one of rock's great poets and lyricists in this book. It features over 20 all-new interviews with Lanegan's fellow collaborators, friends and admirers. He'll share some of those stories from the book in this interview including one about the Nirvana song Lanegan co-wrote the lyrics for but isn't credited. Joe Cardamone has been on my radar for fifteen years but I actually met him for the first time at Lanegan's funeral. He made a keychain for Mark's friends like the old hotel keys, imprinted with "Mark Lanegan, the Night Porter, 1964-2022." This is our first real conversation and, man, it was really so fantastic to talk to him.   Los Angeles native artist Joe Cardamone has lived a few lifetimes while leaving a wiry dent in the global underground music and film scenes. The band that Joe fronted for 17 years, The Icarus Line, formed in East Los Angeles in 1998. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous, if not the greatest, punk group of their generation. The cult band that never gave up. Performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in front of 30,000+ fans, multiple appearances on the legendary John Peel show, criss-crossing the US in a van opening a stadium tour for A Perfect Circle and The Cult and a UK tour with Primal Scream are just some of the "greatest hits" of a legend loaded with nearly mythic live performances and chaos. But it was the death of guitarist and original member Alvin DeGuzman in 2017 following a long battle with cancer, which was the actual end of The Icarus Line (a demise recently depicted in Michael Grodner's independent film "The Icarus Line Must Die" which is now streaming on Amazon and Hulu). The following year Joe released his solo debut, the frenzied Holy War album and film on his own imprint American Primitive. Cardamone's new approach was a modern one man show that forged R&B and crushing electronics with the combative spirit of his formative punk years. While crafting a pair of follow up albums in 2020 the world stopped and the QUARENTINA project emerged in response. Outside of his work as an artist Joe has produced and collaborated with some of the greatest artists of our time including Mark Lanegan, lan Astbury, Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and James Williamson (The Stooges).

Don't Call It Nothing continues its tribute to the Screaming Trees and the late Mark Lanegan by reviewing the years 1990-93. The decade began with Lanegan releasing his solo debut, The Winding Sheet, with help from Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. Both Conner brothers released records in 1990 through New Alliance Records, a subsidiary of SST that began life as an outlet for D Boon and Mike Watt of the Minutemen. In 1991, the Trees released their major label debut and final album with original drummer Mark Pickerel, Uncle Anesthesia. Barrett Martin then replaced Pickerel in time to record the band's masterpiece, 1992's Sweet Oblivion. We end the episode in 1993 as Mark Lanegan joins The Walkabouts for a soulful walk through the Charlie Rich catalog.Support the show

I met Ben Schafer in the process of working on Mark Lanegan's book with him. I have a lot of resistance to meeting publishing/ music industry/ entertainment industry folks because it always feels so ingenuine, like "I will pretend to be your friend until it no longer serves my business interests, at which point I'll pretend you never existed." From our first meeting, I recognized that Ben was, like me, just an earnest fan of Lanegan's work. We talked about how great Lanegan's voice and writing was, how excited we were for the book, sobriety, then finally just life in general. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, despite my best efforts to the contrary, Ben and I became friends very quickly and have stayed in close touch for the last couple of years. Yes, of course, we talked about the loss of Lanegan, but I tried to ask him some hard questions about publishing and his role as editor.    Ben specializes in music, popular culture, biography, memoir, and popular science, with a particular soft spot for American counterculture. I met Alec in... Jesus, 2001? Ironically, we met partially in the context of me grieving a friend who had passed. We met again through music. He had started a record label in order to put out the music by a new band from Ohio called The National. I was managing Baby Dayliner, who wound up on Brassland. But our way into the conversation today is Mark Lanegan. When Lanegan's memoir 'Sing Backwards and Weep' published, Alec read it and plunged into Lanegan's music during the pandemic. We cover a lot here but honestly, you need to listen to this podcast because Alec is such an earnest fan of music, even after working in the industry for more than 20 years. Being a fan is deeply cool. Remaining a fan is even cooler.   Alec Hanley Bemis is a writer, producer & curator of creative projects, primarily in music. In 2001, he co-founded the Brassland label with Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. For that work, he has been covered by The Irish Times, The Guardian, Print Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. In his first career as a writer & journalist, he was published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Bookforum and LA Weekly on topics ranging from Beck to backyard wrestling. Once a month or so he posts algorithm-free music playlists to his mixtape delivery service AHB's Goodies: http://alechanleybemis.substack.com Learn more at http://brassland.org and http://alechanleybemis.com

Don't Call It Nothing pays tribute to the late Mark Lanegan by discussing the Screaming Trees in the 1980s. Everyone, even all-time greats, has to start somewhere and this episode tracks the Trees early years, when they went from faithful sons of Nuggets, Sabbath, and The Stooges to masters of melodic acid rock.Support the show

Questa la scaletta completa dell'episodio: Queens of the Stone Age – Songs For the Dead (Live at Werchter 2002); Fugazi – Arpeggiator; Unwound – Message Received; Kyuss – Gardenia; Morphine – Thursday; Marlene Kuntz – Retrattile; Helmet – Milquetoast; Soundgarden – Jesus Christ Pose; Melvins – Revolve; Swans – Mind / Body / Light / Sound; C.S.I. - M'importa ‘na sega; Riff graffiati, batterie maltrattate, bassoni vibranti e microfoni in picco-zona-rossa: questa la ricetta dell'undicesimo Stato di Alterazione. Shortly after recording #133, Greg learned that pioneer Grunge vocalist Mark Lanegan had passed away at 57 from COVID complications. Lead singer for the Screaming Trees, Lanegan was a friend and collaborator with so many great musicians; Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Isobel Campbell (Belle and Sebastian), PJ Harvey, and more. He was considered a true friend to so many musicians, all of which have been expressing condolences and paying tribute since his passing. This week’s show was originally going to be another in the series of “odds and ends” episodes where I air tracks from some record I’ve either recently acquired or pulled out of the archives to give a listen. Unfortunately, the deaths of two great rockers changed those plans. Mark Lanegan is in my opinion the most artistic of all of the grunge-era lead vocalists. While the vast majority of his brethren rarely travelled out of their safe zone, Lanegan was a musical shape shifter throughout his entire career. There was simply not a genre he wouldn’t attempt, nor did it seem like he ever said no to a collaborator. The first half of the show consists of long sets devoted to his solo career and also a taste of those collaborations. Then just a couple of hours before showtime came the news that Downliners Scet leader Don Craine had also passed away. Never heard of the Sect? You’re loss. Please go do some research after listening to tonight’s show. The set dedicated to him not only includes some of the great tracks of their mid-60s glory years but also a couple of great collaborations with Billy Childish. Filling up the […]

It's a rather different show on Riot Act this week. Steve and Remfry spend the majority of the show paying tribute to a musical hero in the aftermath of the news of Mark Lanegan's passing at the age of 57. From Screaming Trees to Queens of the Stone Age to his solo material and guest appearances on releases from the likes of Cult of Luna, Manic Street Preachers and The Armed, Lanegan has been one of our most covered artists on this show and we have seldom been anything other than awestruck by his magnificent voice, poignant lyrics and vast range and brave decision making as an artist. So it felt right that we dedicate the majority of the show to talk about our feelings on losing him. There is more sad news as we also pay tribute to Jamal Edwards, who also passed away at the age of 31 this week, and talk about his incredible work in helping the early careers of everyone from Dave and Stormzy to Ed Sheeran and Rita Ora. We also discuss the latest releases by Bambara and Blood Incantation, ask why Tool are charging nearly £600 for a vinyl and examine the damage done to the O2 Arena in London after Storm Eunice ripped parts of its roof off. Unfortunately, they broke up over 20 years ago - and while Lanegan's solo work has (in this author's opinion) far eclipsed his hits with the Connor brothers, neither he nor the rest of the band appears in this episode of Rated RPG. Instead, the Gorgeous Phoenix Brigade housesit for a hag and fight off some unwanted guests. Singer, songwriter, and musician Mark Pickerel was a founding member of the Screaming Trees, a PNW band that shaped the course of grunge history in the 80s and 90s. After recording five studio albums with the Screaming Trees and recording with Nirvana as well, Mark started the bands Truly, The Dark Fantastic, and Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands, (now Pickerel and the Peyote 3). Mark has also collaborated with musical icons such as Brandi Carlile, Mark Lanegan, and Guns and Roses' Duff McKagan over the years. Mark's most recent album is I Have Visions. What you will learn: Mark talks about his most recent album, I Have Visions, and reflects on his evolution from Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands to Pickerel and the Peyote 3. He also shares what it was like to perform live for the first time since the pandemic began. [0:00-10:25] How Mark and his fellow Screaming Trees band members grew to feel a lot of PNW pride during their popularity. What it was like forming his first band in high school and graduating with two records under his belt. [10:25-21:26] How his collaboration with Nirvana came about, and the catalyst that inspired Mark to shift his focus to writing and singing. [21:26-31:48] How Mark has grown to enjoy the song-writing process, the inspiration he found learning that there was an audience for his songs, and how he learned to lean into vulnerability. [31:48-39:55] Mark breaks down his creative process when writing songs, and describes the balance he strikes between letting inspiration flow and implementing technical structure to his music. What Dwight Yoakam taught Mark early in his songwriting career. [39:55-50:32] Mark recounts his impressive history of artistic collaboration, and how much of it was born from mutual interests and respect. He shares an amazing story about his first time recording with Brandi Carlile on her first album, and how he knew right away he was, “dealing with a talent of a different caliber.” [50:32-1:02:57] Why Mark chose to settle in Ellensburg, a small, a rural town in Central Washington about 90 miles from Seattle. Mark gives insight into the differences between Los Angeles and the PNW regarding songwriting and performing opportunities. Mark provides some upcoming show dates, describes his plans for future, and shares about his family life. The success of the 1993 Screaming Trees album Sweet Oblivion and the single "Nearly Lost You" may have put Mark Lanegan on the mainstream map, but as a solo singer/songwriter, Lanegan was already successfully forging a different path with 1990's The Winding Sheet. By the time 1994's Whiskey For The Holy Ghost was released after a protracted recording period, the split between the streamlined grunge of the Trees and Lanegan's forays into folk and blues were fully on display. With only one track, the escalating "Boracho," featuring prominent electric guitar and distortion, the album finds more similarities with fellow Seattle folksters The Walkabouts (with whom Lanegan appeared as a guest) than most of his Seattle contemporaries. The result is Lanegan's voice, sought after as a collaborator for decades to come, fully out front, which serves him well while exposing some of the cracks in the instrumental performances and production.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - House A Home 13:11 - The River Rise 17:47 - Boracho 31:18 - Sunrise 36:58 - Ride The Nightingale Outro - Judas Touch   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Nick Cave "A stoned cold classic" Ian Rankin "Powerfully written and brutally, frighteningly honest" Lucinda Williams From the back of the van to the front of the bar, from the hotel room to the emergency room, onstage, backstage, and everywhere in between, Sing Backwards and Weep reveals the abrasive reality beneath one of the most romanticized decades in rock history-from a survivor who lived to tell the tale. When Mark Lanegan first arrived in Seattle in the mid-1980s, he was just "an arrogant, self-loathing redneck waster seeking transformation through rock 'n' roll." Within less than a decade, he would rise to fame as the front man of the Screaming Trees, then fall from grace as a low-level crack dealer and a homeless heroin addict, all the while watching some of his closest friends rocket to the pinnacle of popular music. In Sing Backwards and Weep, Lanegan takes readers back to the sinister, needle-ridden streets of Seattle, to an alternative music scene that was simultaneously bursting with creativity and saturated with drugs. He tracks the tumultuous rise and fall of the Screaming Trees, from a brawling, acid-rock bar band to world-famous festival favourites with an enduring legacy that still resonates. Lanegan's personal struggles with addiction, culminating in homelessness, petty crime, and the tragic deaths of his closest friends, is documented with a painful honesty and pathos. Gritty, gripping, and unflinchingly raw, Sing Backwards and Weep is a book about more than just an extraordinary singer who watched his dreams catch fire and incinerate the ground beneath his feet. Instead, it's about a man who learned how to drag himself from the wreckage, dust off the ashes, and keep living and creating.

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

I can't believe I've never recorded a Lovecast before, but honestly, I looked back through the old titles and it didn't come up. So here we go, the counterpoint to last week's Hatecast is this. I am full of the joys of life, relaxed and happy. Would you believe it? Actually, the reason this podcast exists is not because I feel some need to eradicate the rage of last week. I like to live by the words of Clem Snide: "don't be afraid of your anger". I am not afraid of my anger. I actually love my anger. My anger, inner rage, permanent sense of simmering resentment - whatever you want to call it - is what makes me who I am, what drives me on, and what makes me enjoy what I do. Fuck it, you can deal with my anger. Instead, this podcast simply exists because last week's ragefest has genuinely lifted the black cloud which it represented clean away from my life. I feel refreshed and released by having got it off my chest and am in a genuinely good mood these days. Who'd have thought it! 01. Plastic Animals - Sheltered (00.10)02. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

The Queuecast is the best I could come up with in an attempt to amalgamate the anticipation of heading off to SXSW on the weekend, with the inevitable queueing to get into stuff once there.  Actually, that’s not quite true. There’s so much going on at places like SXSW that really, if the thing you want to see has an annoying queue (and for me they are never anything other than annoying) outside it, then you can always walk five minutes down the road, walk straight in untroubled, and see something else equally brilliant instead.Mrs. Toad is out there already, presumably having cocktails with young Ian who works at the label with me. In fact those two total fuckers are probably three or four margaritas down already, as you read this. Bastards. Anyhow, I get out on Saturday afternoon, and the gin will be flowing within moments, I promise you.The upside of this SXSW fun, which will no doubt irritate the shit out of people back home, is that Toad Hall once again becomes a recording studio while we are away.  Both Rob St. John and Meursault will be making inroads into their next releases over the next fortnight, so hopefully the thought of that will calm your jealous rage at all the fun we are having in Texas. 01. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Yes, mosherama!  This podcast draws its name, slightly sadly, not from the fact that I have been in one insane moshpit after another this week, which might have been quite cool, but from the rather more mundane circumstance that I have simply been to quite a lot of gigs. I did mosh, in a sense. In the fat, sad old man sense that I stood sort of in the middle and nodded my head vaguely in time to the music.  I know, I know, who will save society from such excess? This must be a job for Carol Vorderman. Defeatist self-mockery aside, I genuinely did see three fantastic gigs one after another this week, so the podcast is going to reflect this.  Once again we have multiple Grandaddy songs, which means my fandom is probably tipping the balance into sad, slavering fanboy territory but umm... well, it's too late for me to make a last-minute scramble for dignity anyway, so fuck it, they were absolutely fucking amazing and you are just going to have to sit through it and pretend to love them as much as I do. 01. Don't worry, this podcast really isn't about football.  I might have been tempted, but in all honesty, but I can't really think of all that many good songs about football and if I am being truthful with myself I can't imagine you lot really enjoying a podcast about football all that much. More to the point, I am back playing football myself now, after something like two years out with back problems.  Two years really is a long time to miss out on something you love doing, and even more so when you're past your mid-thirties and every year you miss is one of the last you'll get the chance to play at all. So, in amongst the new songs and all the usual things you would expect from a Toadcast (i.e. mostly swearing) there are a couple of songs which represent my reaction to getting back to playing football again, and my reaction to some of the more newsworthy moments of the footballing week as well. 01. Morris Major - Seymour Grove (00.17) 02. Chris Devotion and the Expectations - A Modest Refusal (07.27) 03. Billy Bragg - A Lover Sings (20.13) 04. Bob Dylan - Oxford Town (24.07) 05. PAWS - Bainz (30.17) 06. Coast Jumper - Lawless (37.49) 07. That Ghost - Morning Now (42.09) 08. Now Wakes the Sea - Propranolol (50.31) 09. Smackvan - 4am (54.19) 10. Mark Lanegan Band - Bleeding Muddy Water (64.01)

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

PHEW!  Thank fuck that's (more or less) over.  This year has been a bit full-on, I have to confess, but the bulk of the hard work now seems more or less over.  Our last release (Lil Daggers) came out last week, and our label Christmas Party is now done and dusted which leaves me a relatively comfortable run into the Christmas period from now on, which is some for which I am quite grateful.Nevertheless, The Leg album, the Jesus H. Foxx album and the second album by Yusuf Azak are all on the menu for early next year, so those need to be nudged into motion, so it's not exactly like my feet are going up and my hands reaching for the remote control and a bag of popcorn.Well maybe, but mostly between Christmas and New Year, I can't really bring myself to work then!Next week I'll be going through the Song, by Toad readers' top five songs and albums of the year vote, so if you want to chip in then just fill in your top albums of the year on this week's Friday Five. 01.
