Shyra is a multi- hyphenate artist. A singer, dancer, producer, fitness entrepreneur, and motivational speaker, whose creative vision spans music, fashion, and personal empowerment. This Los Angeles-based powerhouse first captivated dance music fans with her breakout single “DJ Love Song,” which reached #28 on the Billboard Dance Chart. The track went on to be featured in John Singleton's film Abduction and later in the action film Skin Trade. Shyra's latest single “Operator”, co-written with Ben Franklin, is an electrifying anthem about reclaiming personal power. Featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming film Not Without Hope directed by Joe Carnahan, the track showcases Shyra's signature high-energy sound and empowering lyrical themes. Her upcoming release, a modern reimagining of The Pointer Sisters' “Fire,” is slated for May and promises to be a bold, high-tempo summer anthem for all! Shyra's influence extends beyond the studio. In 2019, she co-wrote and released “Universal Love” as a Pride Month anthem promoting global unity. The track was remixed by top DJs and embraced as a celebration of inclusivity and love. Behind the scenes, Shyra has collaborated with industry icons such as Grammy-winning songwriter Makeba Riddick (Rihanna, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez) and veteran producer Gary Luxx (Janet Jackson, Usher, Maroon 5). Currently, she is working on her next studio album with a bold new direction, continuing to reinvent pop with soulful authenticity. Committed to lifting others as she rises, Shyra founded STAR Academy in 2016—a performance-based mentorship program for emerging talent in music, fashion, film, and stage arts. She is also the co-founder of ShyFit, a lifestyle and activewear brand designed to inspire confidence, strength, and style for the new generation. We had a great time talking with Lauren about music as the constant in her life, wearing every single hat as a working musician, and females with huge voices who don't hold back (likeLauren!). We also geek out over arts and crafts! This soulful rocker, originally from Chicago, has had a passion for singing throughout her entirelife. Growing up in a household that was rich in music, her influences were widely varied from artists such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Joss Stone, Kelly Clarkson, and many more. Despite these modern musical influences, Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She eventually took her love of singing to the Quad Cities and obtained a Bachelor's degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. During her college years she spent a summer living inNovafeltria, Italy, learning the language and touring and studying opera. Initially she planned on becoming an opera singer, but quickly realized that rock and soul music were more her style. Since moving to Nashville, Lauren has continued to tour and release new music. Her album, “Love on the Rocks” that was released in the summer of 2021 debuted at #14 on the BillboardBlues Chart, #4 on Roots Music Report & #21 on the NACC Blues Charts. Anderson has opened for bands such as Beth Hart, Ana Popovic and Mike Zito. Zito was also a featured artist on her sophomore album, on the tune "Back to Chicago". She just released her third full-length album, “Burn it all Down”, which features Albert Castiglia on the track “Zombie Blues” and JohnSalaway on “Hit The Spot.” Check her out here: Website: laurenandersonmusic.com IG: laurenandersonmusic FB: Lauren Anderson

There are few better moments during a wrestling match that make you want to raise your fist and say "Hell yeah" than when a wrestler defiantly kicks out at one. The one count, when used at the right time, can send a jolt of energy through the crowd and put a little extra mustard on a match. On this episode, Andrew is joined by first-time guest Cola TheLodger from the VOW Discord to play songs that only have one word in the title. Yes, it's that simple, but this episode is anything but, as Cola's picks are entirely in the stoner metal/doom metal genre, while Andrew's picks are a lot more varied. It's a really fun hang with artists like Fu Manchu, Supergrass, the Pointer Sisters, Neurosis, Zero 7, Dr. Colossus, Mastodon, Seal, and many more. As part of our Black History Month Rewind at Ms. Studios, we're revisiting some of our favorite past episodes. In our final Rewind, we're revisiting an episode we recorded in 2021, celebrating Juneteenth with Fritz and Anita Pointer of the Pointer Sisters. In this joyous episode, host Michele Goodwin is joined by music icon Anita Pointer of the three-time Grammy Award-winning R&B group the Pointer Sisters and her brother Fritz Pointer, acclaimed professor and historian and former music manager. They celebrate Juneteenth and unpack their award-winning memoir, Fairytale: The Pointer Sisters' Family Story.Fritz and Anita Pointer discuss coming of age in the civil rights movement; emphasize the importance of tenacity and learning the hard way; and break down what it was like for their family to finally break through and land award after award—all by doing it their own way. As an added bonus, expect to be serenaded by Anita Pointer!Joining us for this episode are two very special guests:Anita Pointer, founding member of the legendary music group the Pointer Sisters. Anita and her sisters found fame in 1973, when the Anita-led “Yes We Can Can” became a hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching #11. Their breakthrough resulted in multiple hits and Grammy Awards, including for Best Performance by a Duo or Group and even Best Country Duo or Group. In 1974, Anita's writing talents helped the group make music history with “Fairytale,” which became a hit on the country music charts—leading the Pointer Sisters to become the first Black female group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Their hit-making magic kept audiences singing and dancing through the 1980s and '90s and became part of the 2008 Obama campaign playlist. In 1994, Anita and her sisters received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Anita continues to write, record and perform, maintaining an international touring schedule as a member of the Pointer Sisters.Professor Fritz Pointer is one of the older brothers of June, Bonnie, Anita and Ruth—also known as the Pointer Sisters. 613 Part 1 of out chat with Ana Croegaert about the removal of Confederate monuments. We also talked to her about her participation in second line parades around the city. “In 2017, the City of New Orleans removed four segregation-era monuments celebrating the Southern Confederacy and valorizing white supremacist ideology. As in other cities, efforts to remove such monuments are not new, and historically have been connected to collective challenges to racialized inequality, and more recently to transnational postcolonial struggles. Given the longstanding activism in favor of removing such monuments I ask, Why now? In exploring this question, I examine the circulation of images, talk, and text about the monuments in relation to the city's post-2005 political economy and find that people's expressed sentiments regarding the statues illuminate the ongoing challenges faced by New Orleans' multiracial working-class and poor residents. I argue that the city administration's framing of the monuments as emblems of an unequal past decouples the monuments' removal from the urgent need to meaningfully address present inequalities.” “I am a Chicago-based anthropologist working with ethnography, performance, and artmaking to expand awareness of people's creative efforts to deal with the aftermath of harm and to craft hopeful futures. From coffee cultures to public memorials, my work spans kitchen cupboards, urban gardens, and city streets to record how people make meaning in their daily lives.” Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet musician, broadcaster, photographer, empresario, and author who joins me today to talk about his newest book “Rollin' Through the ‘70s. Weed, Woman and Song.” Born in Indiana, his recording career began in 1965 with a cover of jazz great Bobby Timmon's song “Moanin'” by his band The Chateaus. Since then, he was mentored by jazz legend Oscar Peterson, and worked with everyone from Janis Joplin and The Pointer Sisters to Linda Ronstadt and Howdy Doody. I've had a remarkable life, he says, and he joins me today to talk about Vietnam and his arrival in Canada, smoking hash and many other stories from his book “Rollin' Through the ‘70s. Weed, Woman and Song.” Then we get to know Christophe Lebold, a professor of literature, performance studies and rock culture from Strasbourg, France, joins me to talk about his book “Leonard Cohen: The Man Who Saw the Angels Fall.” It's an intriguing, massive, 543-page compendium that takes a deep metaphysical dive into the late Montrealer's world.

How many different songs can you think of that have the same title? Like "Jump" by Van Halen, Kriss Kross and the Pointer Sisters, "One" by U2 and Metallica or "Lady" by the Commodores, Kenny Rogers and Styx. Episode #18 is a fun ride through different musical genres that all share one common thread - a song title!

Thus, the creation of “Raiding The Crates on DC Radio,” a weekly two-hour ride through John's wildly diverse music taste and genre-hopping music collection. Today's guest makes me feel so excited and I just can't hide it. It's The Pointer Sisters. No. No it's not. Please welcome David Hakopyan of Antenna The End. And I have to thank Jamie Park and Teen Cancer America for connecting us. David grew up in one of the biggest Armenian communities in the world outside of Armenia, itself. He was influenced equally by rock and Armenian folk music. But music wasn't always his focus. For a while as a teen, he thought he might be an illustrator. He was the counterfeit Pushead guy in his school. And if that doesn't make sense, it will after you listen. Or go look up Pushead. He got serious about music when he started playing in an Armenian, revolutionary, folk, alternative rock band with Serj Tankian called Forever Young. After cheating on that band with another, he started Soil with Serj and Daron Malakian. David discusses the one and only live show they played and its biggest pitfall. David and his bands, like Apex Theory & Mt. Helium, have always been hyper-focused on sounding original, to the point of making sure no one was listening to the big rock stations in LA. They'd do spot checks on each others' radios. David's new band is Antenna The End. And you can absolutely tell that it's David's band. He started writing after the kinds of personal issues that get a guy writing music. He also tells me when he came up with the band's unique name. The debut EP will be out soon, but David gives us a sneak peak at the music and stories behind the band's formation and the music he's created. Check them out @antennatheend on Instagram & Facebook. Keep an eye out for the EP release in early August. And give him a call at…you know what, don't do that. BUT, follow us @PerformanceAnx on Instagram & Twitter. Reach out, we don't bite. Grab merch at performanceanx.threadless.com or donate some coffee money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. And now I hope you enjoy the awesome conversation I had with David Hakopyan of Antenna The End on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices.
