It is billed as “the world's longest and toughest snowmachine race”. Next year, the Iron Dog Race plans to add three checkpoints to its over 2,000-mile course. As KOTZ's Desiree Hagen reports, a new race route, announced earlier this month, has been several years in the making and crosses through two national wildlife refuges. The new route adds the communities of Huslia, Shungnak, and Ambler. Rick Paquette is the executive director of the Iron Dog. He says it will not add miles, but would traverse through new terrain. He says the race has been working on permitting for the route for a while. “This isn’t something like overnight that happened, you know what I mean. This was over seven years in the making, this is a really big deal, and we’re super excited to do this.” Why did it take so long? The proposed race route passes through federally protected land, more than 100 miles of it (79 miles on Koukuk, 34 miles on Selawik) through the Koyukuk and Selawik National Wildlife Refuges. Both refuges rejected the initial request, citing similar reasons: the race would be a public safety problem, require more budget and staff than available, and not align with the refuges' purpose or mission. A letter from Selawik Wildlife Refuge said that a portion of the proposed route would also violate the Wilderness Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (ANILCA) through 1.3 miles of trail. The managers of the refuges were unavailable for comment. Iron Dog also submitted a special use permit through Kobuk Valley National Park, but changed their race route to a section of the Kobuk River that does not fall under park service authority, according to a representative from the Western Arctic Parklands. Race organizers appealed the rejections in June 2025 and reached out to the office of U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK). A press release from the senator said he and his team played a “key role” in advancing the new route and drafted an appeal that “highlighted inconsistencies” preventing the route's expansion. “Obviously anytime you have a bunch of different organizations that you’re trying to collaborate with and get one final answer on, it’s extremely difficult. I think, new administrations, and definitely, Sen. Sullivan’s office really helped push this over and help us get to the goal line on this.” Paquette says Sullivan's office helped with letters of support, and with multiple organizations, including the Bureau of Land Management. And it paid off. In December, Sara Boario, Regional Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, overturned the previous denials, allowing for the new race routes. Boario's office did not respond to questions from KOTZ news. Paquette says there are challenges with a race this large, which passes through 23 mostly remote checkpoints. “It’s a beast to put on this race logistically, and there’s always struggles with fuel and getting equipment out, and getting, you know, resources out there.” Both Ambler and Shungnak have experienced prolonged fuel shortages in the last several years, often in winter when storms can ground fuel planes. Still, Paquette says Iron Dog is prepared for those challenges. “We do our best to make sure we get all the resources for the communities that we need to put a strong race.” Paquette says Iron Dog has several programs that the new race communities will benefit from, including free helmets and free life jackets for local youth. Last year, Iron Dog established the Iron Pup program, which fosters young racers. Iron Dog also founded the Make it Run program that partners with schools and engineers to encourage technical and mechanical training. Paquette says there is also economic benefits to the new communities. “There’s gonna be publicity, there’s gonna be people going through these areas, you know. We send resources up there, spending money, and, you know, giving a chance for these folks to see this incredible race.” The Iron Dog race typically begins in early February. A date has not been set for next year’s race. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. The hospital can be a harsh backdrop to many of life's most pivotal events. Alarms blare at inopportune times, rounding doctors intrude on delicate conversations, and vigilant nurses disrupt rare periods of rest. All the chaos can add to the stress of a patient's hospital stay and create an emotionally discordant experience — seemingly out of step with the profound grief, joy, or intimacy one might expect to accompany the weighty moments that happen in the hospital. In the face of this challenging environment, what can be done to connect patients to the emotional threads of their lives — to invite meaning during these critical times? The answer, at least in part, may lie in music. Our guest on this episode is Melanie Ambler, fourth-year medical student at Stanford and professional cellist. As an undergraduate at Brown, Melanie began researching the intersection of music and medicine. She then completed a Fulbright fellowship in France where her master's work centered on the effect of music on patients with dementia. Once she got to Stanford, Melanie and her cello Shelby got to work bringing music to hospitalized patients. In 2024, she founded Musical Rounds – a music and storytelling project for patients in palliative care. Over the course of our conversation, Melanie shares how her musical and medical journeys melded into one. We discuss the power of music to prompt reflection, draw out stories, and even transform the ugliness of the hospital into beauty. Best of all, Melanie plays for us live while sharing her early patient experiences that motivate her work at Musical Rounds — including the launch of her new Musical Rounds podcast. In this episode, you'll hear: 3:00 - How playing the cello became a central part of Melanie's life 13:45 - Melanie play a piece that showcases the beauty of the cello18:10 - How Melanie became interested in medicine27:10 - How Melanie merged music and medicine in her research and in the hospital 46:00 - Reflections on the power of music in the lives of physicians52:00 - How Melanie's non-profit organization Musical Rounds is working to provide patients moments of reflection through music and storytelling55:22 - A patient story that exemplifies the power of music at a patient's bedside If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This conversation delves into the complexities of land use controls, focusing on the interplay between individual property rights and government regulations. It explores the concept of police power, zoning laws, eminent domain, and regulatory takings, providing a comprehensive overview of how these elements shape property law. The discussion highlights key cases, modern trends, and the implications of government actions on private property rights, ultimately emphasizing the ongoing negotiation between public interest and private ownership. Most property owners don't realize how easily their land can be redefined or taken by the government — and the rules that determine when you get paid are more complex than you think. If you're facing land use restrictions, rezoning, or government seizures, understanding the subtle distinctions could be the difference between compensation and being left empty-handed.In this eye-opening episode, we cut through the legal jargon to reveal how land use law balances individual property rights against the state's police power. You'll discover how the concept of police power grants governments broad authority to regulate land for public health, safety, and welfare — but that power is checked by constitutional limits that can turn a regulation into a costly takings claim. We break down the core frameworks that govern land disputes:Zoning: How local governments draw legal lines that enforce land use categories like residential, commercial, or industrial. You'll learn why courts give zoning laws the rational basis test, often leading to deference but with key exceptions for nonconforming uses, variances, and spot rezoning. Plus, the history behind Euclidean zoning and its modern reforms—mixed use, PUDs, and inclusionary zoning—are explained with practical insights for real-world or exam scenarios.Eminent Domain: Dive into the power that allows governments to seize land for public use, with the landmark Kelo v. New London case illustrating the broad interpretation of public purpose, including economic development. We'll explore what it means to be paid just compensation — mainly fair market value — and the pitfalls involving sentimental value and partial takings.Regulatory Takings: This gray zone is where law fights to define “too far.” Justice Holmes' famous Mahon line sets the stage: regulations that deny all economic value (Lucas) or involve permanent physical invasions (Loretto) trigger per se compensation. You'll learn how courts analyze cases where regulations restrict land use but stop short of total deprivation, using tests like Penn Central balancing factors, and the importance of parcel as a whole (Murr) in valuing property.Advanced Concepts: We discuss the denominator problem—how property boundaries influence claims—and how exactions (like impact fees or land dedication) are scrutinized via Nolan and Dolan tests for nexus and proportionality. Discover the innovative use of transferable development rights that turn regulation into market transactions, offering strategic ways to mitigate takings claims.Recent Developments: The episode closes with compelling cases like Cedar Point Nursery, affirming that even partial physical invasions are takings, and Tyler v. Hennepin, emphasizing that government overreach in foreclosures can cross the line into “home equity theft.”This episode is essential for anyone navigating property disputes, land use planning, or preparing for law exams. Master the step-by-step checklist: from applying the rational basis test in zoning, to spotting per se takings, and balancing analysis in complex regulatory cases. Property law is a battlefield of rights and limits. By understanding where the line is drawn—and when it's crossed—you'll be better equipped to protect your interests or challenge overreach. land use, zoning, eminent domain, regulatory takings, property law, police power, property rights, Euclid v. To wrap our 2025 season, we're diving into what is happening in Alaska. How Indigenous people in Alaska are fighting to protect the ecological biodiversity, their subsistence rights, wildlife, and to keep minerals in the ground. Historically roads being built in Alaska have been the ways in which they've exploited the people and the land. One current project being proposed is Ambler Road, over 200 miles of road, in one of the most prescient lands in the world. We sat down with Ricko DeWilde, Diloola Erickson, Naawéiyaa Tagaban who've come all the way from Alaska to share their story of organizing and resistance to protect their way of life. The U.S. Government shutdown is disrupting SNAP, deepening food insecurity in many Native and rural communities. The crisis is not just about hunger — it reflects the erosion of systems that once ensured community health and sovereignty of food sources.  The "Feed the People" campaign is a call to action for funding mutual aid support in response to the disruption of SNAP in the Oceti Sakowin. While responding to the urgent needs of our community, we are also strengthening traditional food systems and collaborating with Indigenous-led projects focused on food sovereignty. ℹ️Learn more about the campaign: https://ndnco.cc/feedthepeople

Luke 6:20-31   Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets." "But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. "Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

You may have heard of it, "Ambler Road"; the 211-mile roadway authorized via Presidential Executive Order to run through Alaska's Brooks Range.  Meanwhile, Congress has used the congressional review act (CRA) to overturn the BLM's resource management plans in Montana, North Dakota and Alaska, putting over 160 million acres at risk.  And don't forget about Utah Senator Mike Lee's latest attempt to defile the current wilderness act.  These are the main topics Sam brings to our attention in this episode.  Our government is seemingly overreaching and not listening to science-based wildlife management and conservation and it is up to you, the hunter, the American and the voter to address it.  Don't skip over this one, because much has transpired since we last spoke.  Fall Obsession Podcast is sponsored by:Hoot Camo Company (https://hootcamo.com/)Bear River Archery (https://www.bearriverarchery.com/)Trophy Edits (https://trophyedits.com/?ref=fallobsession)The Outdoor Call Radio App (https://www.theoutdoorcallradio.com/)

What happens when two traditional "alpha males"—a former rugby league champion and an ex-infantryman—sit down for a raw, unfiltered conversation about modern masculinity? Prepare to be challenged. In this powerful episode from the archives, host Andy Lopata brings together Luke Ambler, founder of the transformative men's support network Andy's Man Club, and Dion Jensen, a New Zealand special forces veteran and mental health advocate. Born from environments where showing weakness was a liability, both men now champion vulnerability as the ultimate strength. This is not a comfortable, politically correct chat. It's a no-holds-barred exploration of the "toxic masculinity" debate, the role of men in a post-#MeToo world, and the crucial impact of leadership in shaping culture. From the changing rooms of professional sports to the front lines of conflict, Luke and Dion dissect why men struggle to open up and how leaders can create the psychological safety needed for genuine connection and high performance. This is the conversation every leader needs to hear about the unspoken dynamics in their teams. Key Takeaways Is the ultimate display of a leader's strength actually their willingness to be vulnerable first? What if "toxic masculinity" isn't a personality trait, but a product of the environments we fail to control? Why might the most effective champions for mental health be the very "alpha males" society often misunderstands? How can you create a culture of absolute safety where your team feels empowered to take off their "masks" and connect? Actionable Insights Lead with Vulnerability: In your next team meeting, be the first to share a professional challenge you're facing or a recent mistake you learned from. By modeling vulnerability, you grant permission for others to be open and build a foundation of trust. Define Your Environment's Rules: As a leader, you are the chief of your tribe. Explicitly define and communicate the non-negotiable cultural rules for your team (e.g., "We address conflict directly," "We celebrate each other's wins"). An undefined environment breeds toxicity. Engineer Hope into Your Check-ins: Borrowing from Andy's Man Club, don't just ask your team what's wrong. Make it a mandatory part of every one-on-one or team meeting to ask, “Tell me one positive from your week.” This actively builds a culture of hope and resilience. An access road is crucial to unlocking critical minerals located in this currently-inaccessible area of Alaska, which has been characterized as one of the largest undeveloped copper-zinc mineral belts in the world and contains extensive deposits of copper, silver, gold, lead, cobalt, and other strategic metals. The road will provide essential surface transportation access for the more than 1,700 active mining claims in the District, supporting expanded mineral exploration, mine development, and operations. Construction of the road will directly support 2,730 jobs, driving income, spending, and economic growth in rural Alaska. Alaska is projected to receive more than $1.1 billion in revenues from mining license tax revenues, corporate income taxes, production royalties, and claim rents associated with this project.   Note the strategic minerals named: Copper, silver, gold, lead, cobalt, and, we should include, rare-earth minerals, a great deal of which we are currently buying from China. Nolan Gray is the author of the very successful book, “Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It.” If you're in the planning and zoning world, you've likely heard of it or read it. If you haven't, run right out and do it.Most of this episode focuses on the unique nature of Houston, Texas, and its approach to land use regulation. Often-scorned by planners because the city doesn't have zoning, it actually provides a fascinating alternative to a process we know by now doesn't work very well. And we dissect a few of the fears related to what might happen without zoning.Nolan has a deep knowledge of the history of zoning, and we touch a bit on how things came to be in the US context. Trust me - it's not as boring as it sounds, but it's also really important to know that this is a fairly young idea and institution. My editorial comment has always been: this was all invented by other humans, not all that long ago, and we shouldn't be so afraid of even radical changes. It's not the Ten Commandments, folks. We can dream of a repeal of Euclid v Ambler, even if we never get it. And who knows, we might even get to a result that's actually more democratic in nature than what we have today.Find more content on The Messy City on Kevin's Substack page.Music notes: all songs by low standards, ca. 2010. Following the tragic loss of his brother-in-law nine years ago, Luke co-founded the charity Andy's Man Club, a peer-to-peer support movement giving men a safe space to meet and talk. What began in Halifax has since grown into a nationwide network of over 300 clubs across the UK, saving lives and breaking down stigma.  This year Luke set out to complete "Mission Possible" which includes completing all five IRONMAN races in the UK alongside additional running and cycling events to support and raise awareness of Andy's Man Club.  Having already completed three of the five events; IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton, IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea and IRONMAN Leeds, Luke was invited to race at the Men's IRONMAN World Championship in Nice next month as an athlete ambassador and will swap out IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth to race in Nice before heading back to the UK to tackle IRONMAN Wales one week later. Unphased by the challenges that lie ahead, mission possible has already made a significant impact within and beyond his immediate circle and community.  Throughout this insightful conversation, Luke reflects on the strong parallels between sport, mental health and resilience, the support of family and community and the power of open conversations.  His athletic achievements and success to date with Mission Possible are certainly inspiring, but it's his commitment to creating lasting change through Andy's Man Club and beyond that truly sets him apart. From building communities to conquering IRONMAN races, Luke's journey shows that with purpose, resilience, self-belief and passion, anything is possible.
