The gang is joined by game developer and former fan game creator Sam Beddoes of FreakZone Games to talk about the long and storied history of Sonic fan games, and the profound effect they've had on the franchise over the years. From their humble beginnings using whatever assets and tools were available, to their massive expansion in scope and scale, to many creators going on to develop their own original games, we cover some of the most interesting and memorable examples that have stuck with us over the years. Expect splat sounds, flashing neon signs, Tenchi Muyo references, massive character rosters, and so much more in this jam-packed episode, by and for the fans! Sam Beddoes is the lead developer at FreakZone Games, based in the UK. He developed three games that I have played: The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures (2013), The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures II: Assimilation (2016), and Spectacular Sparky (2021). All three games are excellent 2D side scrollers with pixelart. In this episode we will discuss 2D games, Sonic the Hedgehog, retro gaming, games development and distribution since 1998, advice for pitching a game, adapting an existing IP into an indie game, improving workflow for a sequel's development, acquiring voice actors, transitioning from solo to collaborative development, what is "game feel?", understanding constructive criticism, and much more. A good, big update on everything FreakZone Games, the launch of Knight Terrors approaching, Super JumpNShoot Attack, and what's up next, as well as an update on my life and answering a bunch of questions. Games I love which everyone else hates? Games I hate which everyone else loves? ...Pineapple on pizza? Not to mention a short audio drama summing up the post-Gears of War era of videogames. How exciting! Listen to me talk crap for too long cheers thanks
Introducing the new FreakZone Games podcast! This first episode is a “Gamedev Soliloquy”, which is what I’ve decided to call the episodes where I talk crap all on my own for a while. This time, I discuss my origin story and answer some Twitter questions.
