It's all change as we kick off Season 18 with The Leisure Hive! New title sequence, new arrangement of the theme, new incidental music, and a new costume for the Doctor! Meanwhile, we welcome our new co-host Diana for her first regular episode with us. We couldn't be more excited to talk about nuclear war and tachyonics… Join us as we discuss how awful this story makes Brighton Beach look, the continued bad treatment of K9, what GOOD synth sounds like, whether you can defeat an Argolin by picking off their berries, long recaps and needlessly prolonged shuttle landings, whether the Foamasi are actually somewhat cute, and how time works within this story. Of course, we have to talk about the Cold War perception of a 20 minute war. If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). Happy April Fool's Day! We had a great time covering Manos: The Hands of Fate back in 2022 and we were bummed that we missed it last year but are delighted to be back this April Fool's with another Un-Substantive Cinema show. This year it's Hot Shots! Part Deux, one of the silliest movies of all time. Written and directed by Jim Abrahams (of Airplane!, Top Secret!, & The Naked Gun) and starring Charlie Sheen, Lloyd Bridges, and Valeria Golino, Hot Shots! Part Deux mirrors the plotlines of films like Missing in Action & Rambo II along with a major subplot from Casablanca. The film is tonally all over the place riffing on movies like The Wizard of Oz, Lady and the Tramp, The Godfather, Enter the Dragon, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, Predator, and many more! It's pretty juvenile but it's nonstop gags and it's a lot of fun! Dale_A loves these movies just as much as Philip so he was the perfect guest! We had a great time and we hope you enjoy it too! The month of October is upon us, and so too are all the attendant ghosts, goblins, ambulatory skeletons—you know the drill. But here at Now We Know studios, a different sort of ghoul shambles out to center stage: Torgo, along with the Master, Michael, Margaret, little Debbie, and Manos (not pictured in this film). That's right, it's "Manos" The Hands of Fate, the basement-budget reviled cult horror flick made famous by those jokers at Mystery Science Theater 3000. We aren't here for laughs, however—we're here to tell you, when you strip away the wisecracking robots, and watch as writer/director/star Hal Warren intended, just how bad is Manos really?

50 years after it was made, and 30 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 catapulted it into so-bad-it's-good movie legend, we have a sequel to the 1966 cult classic "Manos: The Hands of Fate," starring several of the original actors, and inexplicably filmed in River Falls, Oregon. Was it worth the half century it took to bring this movie back, or does it find new and interesting ways to fail outside of how its predecessor did?
This week: "Manos: The Hands of Fate" (1966). We have a lot of questions this week: Was this a cult? Are there other Manos congregations? Could we be sister wives? Who did what to Debbie? Yes, this episode is about Shin Ultraman (dir. Shinji Higuchi), but (thanks to this week's guest Beth Westbo) the podcast also touches on, of all things, Doctor Who, American pop culture . . . and it wouldn't be an episode of Monster Kid Radio if Derek didn't mention Manos: The Hands of Fate (dir. Harold P. Warren) at least once. MKR listeners got into the act as well with their called-in thoughts on Shin Ultraman. In 1966 director Hal Warren unleased "Manos The Hands of Fate" in a small theatre in El Paso, Texas. After a short run, the film seemed to be lost to time until the iconic "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" found a copy and aired it for it's audience of acerbic, riffing aliens. One of the stars of the film happened to be watching that episode when she recognized her father, her dog and herself magically in front of her eyes, at long last reunited with a home movie to end all home movies. In this episode, Jackey Neyman discusses the strange stories behind what many consider the worst movie of all time, a mantle she embraces with grace. It is the second of our Halloween episodes! Jackey Neyman Jones joins us for this week's conversation as we talk about one of the most popular episodes of Mystery Science Theater: 3K which covered the 1966 film, Manos the Hands of Fate. Jackey plays the little girl in the film, Debbie. Her father, Tom Neyman, played the master in the film and was an accomplished stage actor. Besides being one of the most popular and hilarious episodes of MST3K, this film is also considered to be one of the worst films of all time. We had the privilege to sit down with Jackey to talk about the story of Manos, her father, MST3K, her experience while filming Manos, as well as what she has been up to in recent years. Jackey is a talented artist and is producing amazing artwork and is a part of a new independent production that is seeking to make a series based on Manos (see link below). This is a fascinating look into a strange and fun part of film history. We were delighted to talk with Jackey and you will be delighted to hear her stories and how you can actually connect with her and her artwork. Buy Jackey's book about her experience on Manos! Happy April Fools' Day! This is a silly idea we had way back in 2019 before we took our unplanned year and a half hiatus (see "Special Annoucement" between episodes 12 & 13) but we're happy to finally share this very bad movie with you all! Manos (Spanish for "hands"): The Hands of Fate is a famously bad movie resurrected by the Mystery Science Theater 3000 team in 1993. It was made by a fertilizer salesman on a bet and it really shows. But even though every aspect of it is a train wreck, there's something undeniably charming, and human, about this very very bad movie. And we are also excited to have a friend of ours from way back join us for this one! Jacob Berardi is a longtime friend who we have watched loads of movies with who has been working in the film business for the last 10+ years primarily as a camera opperator and cinematographer. We hope you have as much fun with this one as we did! We're comin' in with a BANG with this week's episode, as we are joined by Jackey Neyman Jones, child actress who played "Debbie" in the Cult Classic Horror Film "Manos, the Hands of Fate" (1966). We sit down and talk to Jackey about her time on the set of the movie, her relationship with the rest of the cast, and a look into the Director, Hal Warren's mindset about the making of this strange but infamous film. This movie has literally been considered the worst movie ever made, and we are here to see where we stand on that opinion. A BIG thank you to Jackey, as we are so excited to get to speak to someone who has experienced this phenomenon of a movie in the eye of the storm, and created so many branch-projects over the years from this original movie. If you are interested in hearing more about Jackey and her work, check out her book "Growing Up with Manos: The Hands of Fate", where she unravels the story behind this movie and the Universe that has been built around it for the last 50+ years! With the passing of the Mama Loa, Lisa Fortier (Pam Grier) inherits the title of high Voodoo priestess. However, the Mama Loa's son, Willis (Richard Lawson), is not too happy about the decision. After consulting Torgo from 'Manos: The Hands of Fate' and given the bones of the cursed African prince, Mamuwalde – Willis ressurects Blacula (William Marshall) from his sanguineous slumber on the other side. Things quickly go south and it's up to Lisa, her boyfriend Justin (Don Mitchell), and some completely incompetent cops to stop Blacula's curse once and for all. Will Pam Grier resist the vampires kiss and be able to cure Blacula via VooDoo? How much evidence is adequate to prove vampires exist? Why are these extra characters here except to beef up the kill count? Just exactly WTF happened with this horror movie? And even though we muse about possible improvements, we need this ending explained from a filmmaking stand point. It's not the best vampire movie, but it's certainly not the worst! In our very special one-hundredth episode, Manos: The Hands of Fate keeps our heroes talking for a long, long time about notorious movies, controversial jazz, weird zeitgeists, stale comics, and exactly what MST3K does that makes us love it so. Features the short, Hired, part 2!
