Don and Dude keep celebrating Casey Kasem's legacy, spotlighting the warm spirit of Casey's Top 40. This episode visits the week of November 16, 1991, when radio united pop, rock, and R&B in a dynamic mix. Each host picks an album tied to a defining Top 10 single, featuring two records that shaped early '90s airwaves and capture the era's bold musical shift.Prince & The New Power Generation – Diamonds and Pearls (1991) Minneapolis visionary Prince shook up the game by fusing funk, new jack swing, R&B, and pop with his New Power Generation band. The album features the chart-topping hit "Cream," a sly, empowering funk groove that became Prince's last solo Number One. From the album's spiritual opening track “Thunder” to the lush balladry of “Diamonds and Pearls” and the epic closer “Live 4 Love,” Prince's thirteenth LP marks a creative rebirth and mainstream resurgence. The production mixes real-deal musicianship with slick digital edges and gospel-fired harmonies. Critics and fans alike see it as a dazzling crossroads, where Prince blended past genius with '90s modernity.Guns N' Roses – Use Your Illusion I (1991) Axl Rose, Slash, and crew upped the ante with a sprawling double-album era, but Use Your Illusion I is where their ambition truly went wild. Kicking off with the menacing “Right Next Door to Hell” and dialing up the drama with power ballad “Don't Cry,” the album explores everything from punk-riff rage to epic piano pop. “November Rain,” a nearly nine-minute symphonic epic, ranks among MTV's most iconic video moments. Meanwhile, “Coma” finishes the set with a genre-bending, ten-minute odyssey. The record's sound is both raw and over-the-top, capturing a band teetering between chaos and brilliance, a defining entry in hard rock's history.Dude is Diggin':Colter Wall – Memories and Empties (2025): Rugged, western country storytelling from a baritone master, full of 1970s honkytonk vibes.Skid Row – Slave to the Grind (1991) (vinyl): Gritty, heavy riffs and soaring metal vocals define this Billboard-topping classic.Don is Diggin':Mavis Staples – Sad and Beautiful World (2025): Soul rooted in seven decades, with powerful collaborations and timely social gospel. The Mountain Goats – Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan (2025): Indie folk storytelling set on the high seas, with dreamlike production and striking guest artists.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds. Send me a Text Message! As we finish the story of Louis Zamperini...let me say this, "I don't know your story, I don't know your life, I don't know your hurt, your trauma, or your sin, but I do know that the grace of Christ is greater and goes deeper and heals more." And when real-life grace flows into your life from Christ and out of your life to others, you will be a real-life blessing. Paul writes these words in 2 Corinthians 9:6,"The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work." That's what I want. I want a don't-quit, gritty, astoundingly generous grace that will cause me to abound in every good work! How about you?
The challenge every successful debut author faces is the pressure to repeat themselves. When we recently sat down with acclaimed Irish author Chloe Michelle Howarth (Author of the Nero-shortlisted Sunburn), we learned why she made the bold choice to defy expectations and pivot her career completely. Her new book, Heap Earth Upon It, is a striking departure: a dark, 1960s-set Gothic novel miles away from the contemporary, coming-of-age tone of her debut. This article breaks down the three most valuable insights Chloe shared on creative fulfillment, editing mastery, and writing with purpose.1. Creative Fulfillment Demands a Genre Pivot.Chloe's first novel, Sunburn, was a critical and commercial success, leading to an obvious question: why not write Sunburn 2?Chloe's answer was pure creative drive. She admitted that she chose the complete opposite direction—a dark, gritty 1960s Gothic—simply because she felt she had to prove to herself that she could do something else. The setting of the new novel was key: a small, quiet, rural village in the depths of January. As Chloe explained, that atmospheric choice naturally lends itself to the Gothic, demanding new language, new emotions, and a different type of bite than her previous work. For writers struggling with a second project, her advice is clear: do what excites you, not what you think the audience (or publisher) expects.2. The Hardest, Most Necessary Editing Lesson.Whether you are writing a sweet romance or a haunting Gothic novel, this single piece of editorial advice, which Chloe received from her agent, is a game-changer: “Less can be more.”Chloe confessed that she loves “over-the-top, very dramatic, detailed prose,” often describing a statement in five different ways. She was challenged to find where it was necessary to be indulgent and where it was simply not serving the story. The takeaway here for any author is to learn how to refine the work. You must be willing to let go of the dramatic flair you love if a concise sentence serves the story better. Her willingness to be open to this professional critique was ultimately what changed her initial manuscript into the published novel.3. Writing a Legacy: Rural Queerness.Perhaps the most impactful takeaway from our conversation was Chloe's dedication to defining her own writing legacy. When asked what she hopes her work will be remembered for, she emphasized her focus on rural Irish queerness. As she notes, queer experiences are far more often depicted in urban spaces, making her depiction of a nuanced, isolated existence in a smaller community a vital counter-narrative.Her advice for writers aiming to be more inclusive? Write from a genuine place. Don't feel the need to crowbar diverse characters in to “tick a box.” Instead, write the character as a full person first, and then let their specific experience be a secondary, natural layer, rather than the defining element. You can dive into the full conversation with Chloe Michelle Howarth, including her thoughts on balancing multiple narrative viewpoints, her unorganised “pantser” process, and her essential book recommendation, by watching the full video below:WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW OR LISTEN ON YOUR FAVOURITE PODCAST PLATFORM: Chloe Michelle Howarth on Writing Irish Gothic Fiction & Her Queer Rural Legacy (HEAP EARTH UPON IT & SUNBURN)Join our brand new community on our Stanstore! This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dig up the past to unmask one of America's most terrifying killers — John Wayne Gacy. The duo dive into Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, the chilling true-crime drama that pulls audiences deep into the grim 1970s Chicago underworld where the “Killer Clown” hid in plain sight.Across eight tense episodes, the Peacock miniseries traces Gacy's horrifying double life as a local contractor by day and serial murderer by night. Jamie and Corrina unpack everything from Michael Chernus' unsettling portrayal of Gacy to the show's raw, gritty style that captures the era's claustrophobic fear. They also discuss how the series resists glamorising violence, instead focusing on the victims and exposing the failures of a homophobic justice system that allowed Gacy's crimes to continue for so long. The hosts debate the show's time jumps, reflect on the haunting realism of its cinematography, and explore why this series feels more Mindhunter and Dahmer than Ed Gein.Highlights Breakdown: - A Victim-Centric Masterpiece: Discover why this series stands head and shoulders above other serial killer dramatisations (looking at you, Monster: The Ed Gein Story!) by placing the victims, their families, and the lasting trauma at the forefront. - The Performance of a Monster: Our take on Michael Chernus's terrifyingly accurate portrayal of Gacy, capturing his chilling instant switch from charismatic public figure to menacing killer. - Gritty 70s Authenticity: How the show's raw, unglamorous style and clever editing choices create a gripping and respectful tone, reminiscent of fan-favourites like Mindhunter and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. - Societal Failures Exposed: A deep dive into the homophobia and systemic police failures that allowed Gacy to prey on marginalised young men for far too long. - The Final Verdict: Is the series flawless? We discuss the pros and cons, including some divisive time-jumping narrative choices in the later episodes.Whether you're fascinated by true crime or drawn to stories that confront the darkest corners of humanity, this episode delivers a gripping, reflective discussion about this heavy but essential watch for true crime aficionados. In this episode of Truth From The Stand, I sit down with my buddy Tyler Jones to talk about life, hunting, and the lessons that tie them together. We get into the joys and struggles of parenting — from youth sports to that bittersweet moment when kids start stepping into adulthood — and how those same lessons apply in the deer woods. Tyler and I swap stories about hunting around cornfields, building a calculated approach for early season sits, and staying mentally sharp when the hunt doesn't go your way. We dig into travel hunts, reading new terrain, and setting realistic expectations so you can enjoy the process instead of obsessing over the outcome. More than anything, this one is about humility, perspective, and letting hunting shape who we are — in the timber and at home. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 460 Be present and engaged with your kids as they grow. Adapt hunting strategies and life plans as circumstances change. Observation and patience are key to both parenting and hunting. Early season success requires a calculated, disciplined approach. Serving others and staying humble builds lasting fulfillment. Perspective and gratitude turn challenges into growth. Gritty experiences make success more meaningful. Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Professor Dr Ger Graus OBE will be joining me for a dedicated season based on his book - Through a Different Lens - Lessons from a Life in Education. We will discuss in more depth the 6 chapters:1. The benefit of hindsight and the lessons learned. This includes family influences, school experiences, teachers, being a teacher and being involved in The Children's University, Kidzania and travelling the world giving lectures, presentations and being a keynote speaker.2. Children can only aspire to what they know exists. I am a living example of this........I would not have been a professional musician and had the career I have had if not for my school experiences and opportunities.3. Thoughts about schooling and education - what is the difference? Education is 0-99 years.......how do we instil this understanding in our children? 4. Technology!!!!!!5. The role we play6. More than a school - measuring what we value not just subject exam results and league tables. We will then invite expert discussion about 3 key areas.Early Years - the current situation, what it can be, why it is important and views from around the globe.School - What is a school and why do children attend?Higher/Further education - How is this working today? What are the alternatives, is it fit for purpose, can they all survive the threat of closure from lack of funding.....does that matter? We will also have a LIVE show where you can get involved, ask questions and bring your views to the campfire. Be a fire lighter. The 49ers' home opener against the Arizona Cardinals brought plenty of twists and turns as San Francisco emerged victorious to maintain its undefeated start with a thrilling 16-15 win. Kicker Eddy Piñeiro's game-winning field goal and Mac Jones' clinical two-minute drive got the 49ers over the hump in a gutsy win, improving San Francisco to 3-0 in the 2025 season. The win didn't come without its costs as star defensive end Nick Bosa exited the game with an apparent knee injury. Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan break down the 49ers' courageous victory, Bosa's injury and how San Francisco's alleged weakness in depth has turned into their strength as they now sit atop the NFC West standings.--(1:00) Uncommon scoreline, but 49ers are making these kinds of win common(3:00) Nick Bosa injury update(6:00) Eddy Piñeiro delivers in the clutch(10:00) Mac Jones seems to rise to the occasion(12:00) 49ers' defense is putting the team on their back(30:00) Robert Saleh has been the key to unlocking 49ers' defense Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
