Nintendos Würfel feiert in diesen Wochen seinen 20.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. We set the game in its time, talk a bit about its precedents and the landscape of independent games in the middle of that console generation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Will Wright, Indie Game: The Movie, Polytron, Phil Fish, Dishonored, Halo 4, AW American Nightmare, X-COM, Firaxis, Mass Effect 3, Forza Horizon, Far Cry (series), Counterstrike: Go, Assassin's Creed 3, Borderlands 2, Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma, Journey, The Walking Dead, Telltale Games, FTL, Spelunky, Papo y Yo, Bastion, Super Hexagon, Terry Cavanaugh, Supergiant, Hades, Transistor, UFO 50, Derek Yu, That Game Company, Sky, Sony, PlayStation, Microsoft, Steam, XBLA, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Nintendo, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Zelda (series), Super Mario (series), Metroid (series), Outer Wilds, The Sixth Sense (obliquely), Renaud Bedard, Trapdoor, Penny Arcade, blitworks, Tetris, Axiom Verge, Tron, Out of this World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Super Mario 3D Land, Minecraft, Sam, Interstate '76, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Matt aka Stormageddon emerges from a pipe to surprise Case and Sam with the power up of a movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie! Can they make it through with only three continues? Music by Vin Macri and Matt Brogan Podcast Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Overview In the podcast recording discussion titled "Another Pass at The Super Mario Bros Movie," hosts Case Aiken and Sam Alicea, joined by guest Matt (Stormageddon), delve into their cinematic experiences of the 2023 film, praising its 92-minute runtime and appeal to both children and nostalgic adult fans. They highlight standout performances, notably Jack Black as Bowser and Anya Taylor-Joy as a proactive Princess Peach, while critiquing Chris Pratt's portrayal of Mario as merely average. The hosts discuss the film's visual splendor and numerous Easter eggs, though they express disappointment over its reliance on pop music rather than classic Mario compositions. Despite some criticisms of the plot's formulaic nature and suggestions for improvement, the overall consensus is positive, deeming the film entertaining while respecting the franchise's legacy; potential sequels and upcoming projects are also touched upon as they conclude the episode. Notes Introduction to The Super Mario Bros Movie Discussion (00:02 - 08:33) Matt (Stormageddon) returns as a guest to discuss The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023) Case Aiken introduces podcast with co-host Sam Alicea The hosts discuss their viewing experiences of the film The 92-minute runtime is highlighted as a positive factor that keeps the movie from overstaying its welcome Initial thoughts: The film works well for both children and nostalgic adult Nintendo fans Cast Performance and Character Representation (08:33 - 18:50) Jack Black as Bowser receives unanimous praise as a standout performance Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach also praised for making the character active rather than a damsel Charlie Day as Luigi received positive reviews Chris Pratt as Mario described as 'just fine' - not as bad as internet feared but not exceptional The group appreciates Charles Martinet's cameo as Mario's father and Giuseppe The opening commercial sequence featuring the 'Super Mario Super Show' song noted as a clever homage Keegan-Michael Key's performance as Toad highlighted as charming The film successfully modernizes Princess Peach as a proactive character rather than a damsel in distress Music, Visuals and Fan Service (18:50 - 30:01) Major criticism: The film relies too heavily on pop music needle drops instead of using iconic Mario game music Case and Matt express disappointment that classic Koji Kondo compositions weren't featured more prominently The DK rap inclusion was appreciated, though Grant Kirkhope wasn't properly credited initially The visual design receives high praise, described as 'one of the most gorgeous animated films' they've seen The group appreciates the many Easter eggs and references to various Mario games Notable references: Mario Kart customization, power-ups, Rainbow Road, and Luigi's Mansion sequence Film balances content for children with nostalgic references for adult fans of the games ️ Plot Structure and Pacing (30:01 - 40:01) The basic plot follows Mario Brothers from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom Main criticism: The plot feels 'paint by numbers' and moves from set piece to set piece for fan service The hosts appreciate the quick pace preventing the film from becoming boring Donkey Kong's substantial role questioned as potentially excessive for this film The 'plumbing scene' at the beginning described as feeling too 'illumination-style' and skippable The Mario Kart sequence, while visually impressive, doesn't serve the plot significantly The movie makes excellent use of character power-ups during action sequences Luma (star creature) from Mario Galaxy highlighted as a standout supporting character Suggested Improvements (40:01 - 50:06) Matt suggests removing or reducing the Kong Kingdom sequence to streamline the story The hosts discuss using more game music instead of pop songs for needle drops Fred Armisen's casting as Cranky Kong questioned; suggestions of other older actors who might have been better The group agrees the final act works well in terms of hero's journey storytelling Suggestions that Donkey Kong could have been integrated differently - as a mid-boss or obstacle rather than major character Discussion of how the film could have better incorporated game mechanics into the storytelling The movie's brief runtime (92 minutes) praised as preventing it from overstaying its welcome Final Thoughts and Future Discussion (50:07 - 01:00:38) Overall positive consensus: While not groundbreaking, the film is entertaining and respects the source material The film succeeds as a fun, colorful movie for kids while providing nostalgic entertainment for adults Comparison to other video game adaptations like Detective Pikachu and Sonic Discussion of potential sequels and the upcoming Donkey Kong movie The hosts appreciate the film's visual quality while acknowledging its formulaic approach to storytelling Matt mentions returning for future episodes to discuss the Venom movies Discussion wraps with information about where to find the hosts and their other podcasts

Another Mario Month comes to a close. Helping me round out Mario Month this year is Bill from the Gaming and Collecting Podcast to discuss the second game in the Mario & Luigi series, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. This game is a prime example of a sequel, meaning it's the most sequel I've ever seen a sequel sequel. What did any of that mean? It's a sequel in good and bad ways. Bill and I dissect what works and what doesn't, where we would have liked to see more changed and where maybe they could have changed less. This game was a polarizing one for me but thankfully Bill is a fan and was able to balance it out and I was so happy with how this episode turned out thanks to that balance. This wraps up Mario Month this year and I cannot thank my guests enough for giving me their time to help me make it a special one. And of course a big thank you to you the listeners! Thank you for coming along for the ride. Mario Month will be back next year. We are gonna have a fine time on this super episode of a podcast. In this episode I am joined by Andre from the Fine Time podcast and Aaron from the SuperPod Saga podcast to talk about Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga! This game was not what I expected at all, both in good ways and bad ways (but mostly good). It was by far one of the bigger swings I've seen for a Nintendo franchise and it took Mario in some really interesting directions. We've got a movie review! Mickey17 is out and I highly recommend it! Plus its a great placeholder before Verdansk returns to Warzone in a few weeks! Also in the news Pokémon GO is now somehow owned by the Saudis, Jeff Bezos really said FAFO, and even Minecraft is getting a popcorn bucket. Plus and Xbox handheld may be closer than you think, Kevin Conroy has another posthumous role, and major casting news for Spider-Man 4.

On the Show we talk about new Disney plus show Dare Devil Reborn, Fonseca talks witj Charles Martinet the voice of Nintendo's Super Mario....The way Martinet tells it, he “crashed” an audition Nintendo was holding for potential Marios in the early '90s (Mario and Luigi did not yet speak in the early Super Mario Bros. games). In an interview with Guinness World Records, Martinet said a casting director gave him a simple prompt: “‘You're an Italian plumber from Brooklyn for this company called Nintendo. We're back, and with the end of the Switch's life coming this year, we thought it would be a nice time to reflect back on the console that has been with us for our entire run on the Zelda Cast. We talk about our top favorite games from the console, which feature a who's who of familiar favorites and a few smaller entries that snuck in as well. Super Mario, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Stardew Valley, and more all show up, plus a debate on the legacy of Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild. We're doing a Q&A next week, so come and make your voices heard and get your questions in! Support The Zelda Cast on Patreon! Subscribe to receive the monthly bonus show ‘The Zelda Cast Top Tens! MARIO MONTH IS BACK! This year's theme is all RPGs! For the next 5 weeks I will be diving into a different Mario RPG game and of course I had to start off the the original Mario RPG game, Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars. Joining me to explore Mario's first foray into the RPG genre are friends of the show Matt Storm from Fun and Games Podcast and Eric Gess from the Unlockables Podcast. We discuss this game's legacy, how it setup Mario for future RPG games, why Booster absolutely rules and of course Yoko Shimomura's legendary soundtrack. On the latest episode of the podcast, Jamie get distracting by this crazy northern winter weather, Doug somehow forgets that we watched an entire month of Bo Derek movies, and we both make the same Wizard/Blue Monkey connection. Pop in that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, consider taking the most indirect route possible from Utah to LA, and join us as we discuss a movie that would have made a much better family melodrama if the purpose wasn't to advertise the third Super Mario game, The Wizard! The Wizard is a 1989 film directed by Todd Holland, written by David Chisholm and starring Fred Savage, Christian Slater, Jenny Lewis, Will Seltzer, Luke Edwards & Beau BridgesVisit our YouTube ChannelMerch on TeePublic Follow us on TwitterFollow on InstagramFind us on FacebookVisit our WebsiteDoug's Schitt's Creek podcast, Schitt's & Giggles can be found here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/schitts-and-giggles-a-schitts-creek-podcast/id1490637008

Always fun when you have to re-record an entire episode. That's what we had to do this week (after recording one of our best episodes over). We tried to replicate it the best we could by recapping the Super Bowl and the Millrose Games, marveling at Skechers audacity and insistence on ripping off On, and reminsicing about smoky dive bars and 8-bit video games. We also talk about the On Cloudsurfer 2, a daily trainer and first shoe of the On "SOFT WINS" campaign.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!SOARWe've partnered with SOAR to offer one lucky listener a SOAR Race Vest and Marathon Shorts to update their racing wardrobe. Woolworths? Coles? IGA? Aldi? NO THANKS. At Filthy Casuals, we choose to do all of our grocery shopping at the Costa Rican Super Mario supermarket chain, which this week has had a landmark victory against the famously litigious Big N. We also chat about Dragon Age: The Veilguard not living up to certain expectations, the pressures on smaller studios to pull the pin on projects that aren't shaping up how they want, plus we review Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, Super Kiwi 64, Cavern Of Dreams and The Roottrees Are Dead! Folks, Yedoye Travis joins us on this week's episode where we hear about a villain you can hire to be tough in front of, an elderly Japanese burglar, a lawsuit over a Super Mario supermarket name, why the national archive needs people who can read cursive, and why ex spies don't want a big casino built in Washington D.C. Genre defining, boundary pushing, console selling; Super Mario 64 had it all. One of the defining games of the Nintendo 64 and of the early 3D era left a huge legacy behind, but we can only really talk about it in full if we go back to where it all began. There's a letter, a girl, and a promise of cake. This is definitely not a trap. Unlock the full episode at patreon.com/duckfeedtv
