In this installment, I plunged into James Dewberry's colorful past, unearthing the bedrock of his disciplined mindset. James regaled us with uproarious tales from his youth – think DIY explosives – that showcased his unbridled curiosity. We explored his voyage into medical Qigong, ignited by a quest for healing alternatives. James's zeal for this time-honored practice was palpable as he unpacked its core tenets. Our dialogue then embarked on a globe-trotting adventure, with James emphasizing the transformative power of embracing new cultures. We capped off our chat with a thought-provoking exploration of love, where James challenged societal norms. Throughout, James's blend of scientific inquisitiveness, spiritual depth, and wanderlust left me musing: How might we all infuse our lives with such receptivity and passion?Bio:My journey into energetic healing, health and wellness, and coaching began over twenty years ago. After watching several friends and family members battle disease and injury, without any permanent resolution, I began an in-depth exploration of alternative healing modalities. Through dedicated practice and the pursuit of knowledge, on how to assist individuals in their healing journey (physically, emotionally, and spiritually), Medical Qigong, Qigong for health, Reiki, and Coaching were discovered. I have been awarded my Masters of Medical Qigong, Insight Qigong Teacher Certification, and Reiki Master Certification. Complimenting my Alternative Health Practice, is my work as a Transformational Coach, focusing on Mental Fitness in conjunction with Health and Wellness.Medical Qigong, Chinese Energetic Medicine, is the oldest branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Qigong has been used to create, improve, and sustain health for over 5,000 years. Through Medical Qigong sessions and prescription exercises, individuals are assisted in the purging of physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma. The body is then strengthened and brought back into balance, allowing its natural healing abilities to reassert themselves.Sessions are designed to integrate and balance all elements of an individual, leading to greater health and well-being. Medical Qigong can be done in person or through distance sessions in a safe, peaceful, and healthy environment. My coaching is centered upon assisting each individual in moving towards a balanced and healthy life through personal transformation. This work is for everyone and I work with individuals from wide and diverse backgrounds. My passion and specialty is in working with individuals who are over 35, single, and without children.
In this episode, I dove deeper into James Dewberry's fascinating journey, exploring the roots of his disciplined approach to life and his penchant for self-reflection. James shared hilarious and hair-raising stories from his youth, including basement chemistry experiments gone awry and homemade "napalm" mishaps, illustrating his early curiosity and fearlessness. We delved into his path to becoming a practitioner of medical Qigong, sparked by a desire to find holistic solutions beyond Western medicine. James's passion for this ancient healing art shone through as he explained its principles and how it differs from other energy practices. Our conversation took a global turn as James recounted his extensive travels, emphasizing the importance of openness and fearlessness in exploring new cultures. We wrapped up with a profound discussion on love, with James challenging conventional notions and advocating for a universal, undiminished love for all. Throughout, James's unique blend of scientific curiosity, spiritual depth, and adventurous spirit left me pondering: How might we all approach life with such openness and intensity?Bio:My journey into energetic healing, health and wellness, and coaching began over twenty years ago. School of International Service professor Claudine Kuradusenge-McLeod joins Big World in this episode marking the 30th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. In 1994, a roughly 100-day massacre by Hutu militias targeting the Tutsi minority ethnic group resulted in the death of about 800,000 people, including Tutsis, moderate Hutus, and Twa. Kuradusenge-McLeod, who is a scholar-activist specializing in genocide studies, begins our discussion by describing, in broad strokes, the events that led up to the genocide in 1994 and what occurred during the 100 days (1:23). She also discusses the international response to the events of the genocide (5:26) and explains where relations between Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda stand today (8:49). What is life like for survivors of the genocide today, both within Rwanda and in the diaspora? (10:57) What has been President Paul Kagame's impact on Rwanda since the genocide, and do people consider him a dictator? (15:59) Kuradusenge-McLeod answers these questions and analyzes whether or not justice has been served in the punishment of genocide perpetrators (26:43). To close out the discussion, Kuradusenge-McLeod discusses the state of human rights in Rwanda today (31:29) and explains the lasting impact of the genocide on the nation (33:37). In the “Take 5” segment (22:59) of this episode, Kuradusenge-McLeod answers this question: What are five things Rwanda needs to do to become fully democratic?

Over a year has passed since Mahsa Amini was detained and died in Iran after being detained by Iran's morality police for improperly wearing a hijab in September 2022. Little People, Big World was a huge part of our lives — but it was time to walk away. The show brought us so many amazing opportunities, great memories and so much fun. But it also challenged us to set better boundaries with filming and our kids, cope with not-so-accurate depictions of our lives and face family difficulties. It was a great run, but we needed an adult in the room. And we made that move. This is Raising Heights with Zach and Tori Roloff. We're here today to celebrate the next big move in our lives and careers, and address the elephant in the room: why we chose to leave the show.Join us as we unpack:

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Mike Long. Mike is a (very) occasional writer for National Review and was one of the originals back in the early 2000s as NRO was launched. He's the author of the non-fiction bestseller The Molecule of More and its sequel coming in fall of 2024.Mike's Music Pick: Joe JacksonAfter running through Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe/Rockpile, it was only a matter of time before we got to covering Joe Jackson. As an artist, Jackson frequently is grouped into the "angry young man"/Pub Rock category with the aforementioned artists. However, as we discuss on the show, there's an incredible depth to his songwriting and arrangements that quickly busted him out of whatever box critics might put him in.Jackson came out of the gate hot, with two releases in the magical year of 1979, Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. They could be parts one and two of the same album. These are the ones that lump him into the Costello/Parker/Lowe movement but it's a sound he rarely returns to again. Every single song is a winner. From here would come some of his best known songs – “I'm the Man,” “It's Different For Girls, and “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” By 1981, he took a massive detour from the rock/pop world with Jumpin' Jive, a collection of covers of 1940s swing and big band songs originally performed by Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Night and Day was released the same year as Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom and it, too, is a bid to be taken very seriously as a songwriter. Like Elvis's effort, it's a complete success artistically and even moreso commercially. "Steppin' Out" earned Grammy Award nominations and reached number six on the charts. "Breaking Us in Two" reached number 18. It's a cosmopolitan, big-city record. The rest of the 1980s would find Jackson stretching his wings and dabbling in jazz, Latin rhythms, classical – if you name a genre, he probably has a song in it (OK, perhaps not metal). Albums like Body and Soul, Big World, Blaze of Glory, and Laughter and Lust didn't sell nearly as well as previous efforts but kept fans happy. After 1991, however, he wouldn'trelease another non-classical studio album until 2000's Night and Day II. Why? Take it from the artist himself: "After the Laughter & Lust world tour … I had real bad writer's block. I couldn't even listen to music. I just lost it, totally. It was awful."But it wouldn't stay that way! Beginning in 2003 with Vol. 4, Jackson would release a string of records that showed he still know how to write a song. By the way, all of us have musical blind spots, and Joe Jackson was one for Jeff. Come along for the ride as he discovers the many layers of this talented performer and writer.
