Huge news this week. It's Charlie's birthday, his 50th he'll be happy for me to tell you, not that that is a surprise for those of you who are watching this; the studio got an impressive one day makeover. As his present, we let him dive back into the world of horse racing and deliver another knockout segment as Epsom and Ascot fill the sporting calendar. Add to this the long awaited start of the World Cup and a check on on what can only be described as the ticketing fiasco, and another fiasco featuring the well behaved, highly disciplined England Cricket Team, and we have ourselves a Breakdown!Disclaimer:The content of this podcast is intended as commentary and opinion on matters of public interest in the sports industry. Born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, Sid Abruzzi came to surfing and skateboarding in the early 1960s. In 1969, 18-year-old Abbruzzi drove down to New Jersey to buy a few Rick single-fins, as surfboards were hard to come by in Rhode Island back then. He swiftly sold the boards, then sold another batch, and found a liking for this buying and selling business. In 1971, Abbruzzi opened Water Brothers Surf and Skate, which became the hub of surf-skate culture in Rhode Island. And in the spirit of "If you build it, they will come," the various quarterpipes, halfpipes, and full-scale skateparks that Abbruzzi spearheaded attracted the world's greatest skateboarders. Hailed as the "Godfather of New England surfing," Abbruzzi is a regular at Ruggles, the fabled reef break along the scenic Newport Cliff Walk. When it became endangered, he stepped up as the spot's most vocal advocate, fighting the good fight—and winning. Abbruzzi is a punk rocker. In 1981, he, his brother, and some friends started the band Big World. Abbruzzi was the lead singer. He threw body and blood into the shows. Big World opened for Iggy Pop, The Tubes, and Johnny Thunders, among others. Abbruzzi is the subject of Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story, a 2024 feature documentary. Now 74, Abbruzzi lives with his wife Danielle not far from the break where he first rode his first waves some 60-plus years ago. In this episode of Soundings, Abbruzzi talks with Jamie Brisick about the founding of Water Brothers, the commitment of cold water surfing, building his legendary skatepark, playing music, and shaping New England's surf and skate scene for over half a century. What if the parts of your story you have been hiding are the very parts that hold your healing? This episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life is a conversation about radical self-acceptance, the courage it takes to own your past, and why belonging is not a luxury but a lifeline. Host Avik sits down with Tamara Fyke, founder of Love in a Big World, multimedia artist, educator, and community builder, to explore what it really means to move from feeling lost to feeling beloved. Through her own journey of divorce, single motherhood, adoption, and an art show that became a declaration of wholeness, Tamara offers something rare: an honest, grounded invitation to stop running from your story and start living from it. About the Guest: Tamara Fyke is a creator, educator, artist, and the founder of Love in a Big World, a social-emotional learning organization she has led for over 30 years. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, she holds a Master's in Education from Vanderbilt University's Peabody College. A multimedia artist who sings, writes, and paints, Tamara uses creative expression as a tool for personal healing and community connection. She also operates a personal creative platform called Tamara Creates. Key Takeaways: Owning your story is not the same as being defined by it. It means accepting that your hardships and difficult chapters are not separate from who you are; they are what shaped you. Trying to erase them is a form of self-rejection. Healing does not mean moving on. It means radical acceptance: the willingness to say this happened, it mattered, and I am still here. That shift from "I survived it" to "it is part of me" is where real freedom begins. Vulnerability is not weakness. It is permission. When Tamara shared her story through art, strangers saw themselves in it. The more honest we are about our own journey, the more we give others courage to be honest about theirs. Isolation and shame are a dangerous pair. The more we withdraw, the louder shame speaks. Community, even one safe person, breaks the cycle. We were not built to heal alone. Being seen matters more than we admit. A 10-year-old child remembered one thing about Tamara: she always called him by name. That simple act of recognition tells another human they are valued. It costs nothing and changes everything. Practical tools for returning to yourself: daily journaling without censorship, a gratitude practice, and intentional body care such as walking, yoga, or breathwork. Not quick fixes. Honest daily commitments to coming back to yourself. Sima KEEPS surprising us! The most intense, revealing, and unbelievable part of the trilogy. This one's a rollercoaster ride of emotions that's sure to have you screaming at your speakers. Just when you think you've heard the worst of it, another twist hits. The kind that makes you pause, rewind, and say, "There's no way this is real life." But it is. It's also a powerful reminder of how strong we can be, even when we don't realize it yet. If you've been patiently waiting for the final piece of the puzzle, this is the payoff. The truth, the lessons, the closure — it's all here. Buckle up. This last chapter is emotional, shocking, inspiring, and deeply human. And by the end, you'll understand why this story stayed with us long after the mic turned off.

Free form sounds are the order of the morning as we set sail for a two hour tour of sounds from the last century once more, leaning on a pretty exciting group of performers. You can tune in each and every Friday morning here on KOWS-LP Occidental where our word is our bond. Join Dave Stroud once again as he shares a selection of tunes by the Zion Harmonizers, Buck Owens, Mink Deville, Johnny Burnette, and Kay Kyser. It's a fun mix of genres…some from the American Songbook, some from Bourbon Street, some from the Brill Building and a blend from the farther reaches. Tune in for a delightful Friday clamoring from Occidental's own station.
Sima travels to Iran with just one goal: To figure out if the man she's only met twice is going to be her husband or not. (No pressure, right?!) The once long-distance connection quickly turns into family meetings, cultural traditions, gold coin negotiations, and a wedding timeline that moves faster than you can say "wedding dress". Listen as our girl navigates first kisses, quiet doubts, unmet expectations and what can happen when you haven't quite found your voice yet

Redoing this one because it's the forty year anniversary of the recording of the song Forty Years. A quick note from Joe Jackson's website - where, incidentally, you can't listen to his music any more. (You could when I first published this podcast episode, and I wanted to include the notes that were here before, but that particular one isn't true any more. Or at least, not right now.) http://joejackson.com/release?page=release&album_id=36852 "I want to clear up two myths about this record which still crop up all the time. Myth 1: During the live recording of the album, the audience was forbidden to applaud. Fact: There was plenty of applause. We were just playing a lot of unfamiliar material, and recording it for an album, so the audience were asked to hold it until they were sure a song was finished. They understood this and there was no problem. Myth 2: It's a double album with a side missing. Fact: This was my first album to be released on CD, where the running time was not an issue. I was having a hard time deciding what to leave out for the LP, though, and I suggested making a 3-sided one, and selling it for the price of a regular album. Much to my surprise, the record company said yes. So rather than a side missing, you got an extra side. Critics, of course, hadn't had to pay for it." And as long as I'm mentioning John Brown below, I'll note my personal belief that he saw the Carrington Event (really, he couldn't have misssed it) but also that he may have seen the red sky as a good omen for the raid on Harper's Ferry. In any case, Forty Years was recorded 40 years ago, in January 1986. That turned out to be a notable year, in particular with the Chernobyl nuclear incident which was one of the turning points that led to the end of the Soviet Union. The song mentions Berlin, D.C., and "where I come from" (England/United Kingdom), but not Moscow. The Soviet Union would be gone 7 years after the song was recorded. -------------- Starting from a 1986 song about how attitudes had changed in the time since World War II, a look at the passage of time, and how it affects the way people think about history. You can listen to Big World on Joe Jackson's site - "Forty Years" is track 9: http://joejackson.com/music&album_id=36852 Information about the album, including recording date (January 1986) and release date (March 1986) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_World https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_v._John_Brown Charlestown, Va. 2nd December, 1859. Part 1 of a story that will unravel into something you won't be able to stop thinking about. In this episode, Jayna introduces a woman very close to her heart — a trusted member of her makeup team and a friend who, like so many of us, wanted love badly enough she silenced her own intuition. What begins as a romantic, hopeful meeting with a man who feels like "the one" quickly becomes the opening chapter of a much bigger, darker, and more complicated journey. This episode is the calm before the storm — the butterflies, the chemistry, the moments that feel fated… and the tiny red flags that are easy to dismiss when you're in too deep. It lays the emotional groundwork for a multi-part series that will unfold into betrayal, endurance, and the devastating cost of abandoning yourself for love. By the end, you'll be asking one question: is this the man she marries… or the man who changes her forever? Buckle up, because what's coming next will have you on the edge of your seat.
