How will people of faith adapt their religious practices to the space environment? How will our cultural values help us adapt to life in space? Christian theologian Michael Waltemathe and Muslim theologian Mehmet Ozalp discuss examples of how the limitations of space will affect religious rituals and traditions. On this episode of Mars Ascend is Paul Levinson, co-creator with Michael Waltemathe of the new book ‘Touching the Face of the Cosmos-On the Intersection of Space Travel and Religion'. We discuss the book and the role religion and spirituality play in humans desire to explore space, including Mars.
A chat with Dr. Michael Waltemathe, co-editor of the book "Touching the Face of the Cosmos: On the Intersection of Space Travel and Religion.” Michael is a Senior Lecturer in Religious Education, in the Department of Protestant Theology at Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany. He is the author of Computer Worlds and Religion, articles about science, religion, and outer space. Our discussion was recorded at the SETI Institute. From Amazon: "Military advantage, scientific knowledge, and commerce have thus far been the main motives for human exploration of outer space. Touching the Face of the Cosmos explores what may be the best motive of all, largely untapped: the desire of every human being, essentially spiritual, to understand more about our place in the universe, how our lives on Earth are inextricably part of that bigger picture. Drawing on leading scientists, religious thinkers, and science fiction writers--including a new interview with John Glenn, and an essay by Director of the Vatican Observatory Guy Consolmagno, SJ--Paul Levinson and Michael Waltemathe have assembled a volume that puts space travel and religion on the map for anyone interested in outer space, theology, and philosophy."You will find the book at Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Touching-Face-Cosmos-Intersection-Religion-ebook/dp/B019HF7H5YMore about the SETI Institute here: http://www.seti.orghttp://www.explorers.institute/podcast/M1.mp3
Welcome to Light On Light Through, Episode 102, in which I interview John Glenn, first American to orbit the Earth, about what he sees as a constructive intersection of space travel and religion. The interview was conducted on July 30, 2015 in Senator Glenn's office at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. A transcript of this conversation will be published in the Touching the Face of the Cosmos anthology being assembled by Michael Waltemathe and me - more details about that, including the contents, here. We also discussed John Glenn's response to portrayals of him in the media, and other aspects of his life as an astronaut. *Note added December 17, 2015: the anthology has been published, and is here available here. In addition to John Glenn, his wife Annie of 72 years participates in the conversation. Adam Sackowitz joins in the questioning. In addition to John and Annie Glenn, I thank Joel Iskowitz, Adam Sackowitz, Peter Bucher, Kathy Dancey, and Fordham University, for each helping in their own ways to make this interview possible. The photo below of John Glenn, Annie Glenn, and me was taken at the end of the interview.
