While we could spend an entire episode on Earth, there is just too much going on in the universe to linger anywhere too long. From our world, we journey out to look at the super massive black hole in the core of M87, and then Beth Johnson will join us with an interview of the SETI Institute's Dr Chenoa Tremblay and how radio astronomers are one step closer to simultaneously looking for life and doing science with the very large array. This interview highlights how advances in signal detection and processing will now allow researchers to both study the science of distant stars and look for potential signals of alien civilizations. (This episode was originally released on YouTube April 29, 2023.)
In case you have not been following the news in the recent months, there has been a resurgence of interest in UFOs, UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomena), and advanced intelligent beings from other dimensions or worlds visiting us. There has also been talk of "non-human biologics", allegedly the remains of the "pilots" of crashed UFOs and UAPs being secretly held by our government. On the next two episodes of this special combined Good Heavens! and Apologetics Profile we sit down with astrophysicist and author, Hugh Ross, of Reasons to Believe to talk about the book he coauthored on UFOs, UAPs, and aliens, Lights in the Sky and Little Green Men.Dr. Hugh Ross is an astrophysicist, founder and senior scholar of Reasons to Believe (reasons.org), an organization that researches and communicates how discoveries about nature harmonize with the words of the Bible. We've learned so much about the planets outside our solar system in the past ten years, and we're poised to learn even more. What kind of life could live on eyeball Earths, and other types of tidally locked worlds? To find out, we asked Aomawa Shields, astrophysicist and author of the science memoir Life on Other Planets. Plus Aomawa talked to us about why burnout is such a huge problem for Black women in STEM. Show notes: www.ouropinionsarecorrect.com/shownotes
If extraterrestrial life existed, how would it impact our faith in Christ? What would it look like? Would it be something like bacteria, plants or animals, or something more resembling intelligent agents like ourselves? Is the Earth specially designed to host biological life or are there other "Earth-like" planets in the universe today? This is part two of our special combined broadcast of Apologetics Profile and Good Heavens! with cosmologist and author Dr. Jeff Zweerink of Reasons to Believe. Are aliens real or are they demons in disguise? Dive into the debate on this episode of Coffee with Conrad.Show Notes:Introduction to the debate on whether aliens could actually be demons from another realm or dimension;- We'll explore both sides by looking at historical examples, personal experiences, and biblical theories that have been proposed;- Discussion of compelling historical examples often cited as evidence of ancient alien encounters, including the Nazca Lines, Ezekiel's vision, Dropa Stones, Sarcophagus lid of King Pakal, Vimanas, Bayankara Ula disks, and more;- Examination of remarkable overlaps between modern alien abduction accounts and reports of demonic oppression/possession;- Analysis of biblical support for the theory that aliens are actually demons, including passages from Revelation, Corinthians, Ephesians and more;- Insights from my personal experiences with sleep paralysis and night terrors resembling reported alien abductions;- Exploration of the Nephilim and extraterrestrial interbreeding with humans described in Genesis 6;- Interview clip with astronaut and moonwalker Charlie Duke on his belief that aliens are demonic entities;- Discussion of reasons to be cautious of deception and lack of evidence from SETI and other scientific organizations;- Conclusion that while intriguing, the extraterrestrial theory lacks definitive proof, and biblical and experiential evidence suggests these beings are deceptive demons seeking to thwart humanity's relationship with God;Links:- Overcoming Night Terror http://bit.ly/NightTerrorEbook- Open Your Eyes, My Supernatural Journey book https://bit.ly/OpenYourEyesBook- Audible free trial offer https://amzn.to/3OZFrlW
Today's episode is an important one, because it's going to lay the groundwork for a lot of the things that we're going to be discussing moving forward. In the weeks and months to come, this is an episode that I'll likely be referring back to often. And that's because today we're diving into an article written by two heavyweights of ufology that serves not only as an essential framework to support our understanding of the complexities and nuances of the UFO phenomenon, but that also—in a very real way—helped to lay the foundation for the recent push for UFO disclosure. In short, it's not only important that we take the time to really understand the ideas presented in this article—but to understand where it fits into the history of modern ufology. The paper to which I'm referring is Incommensurability, Orthodoxy, and the Physics of High Strangeness: A 6-Layer Model for Anomalous Phenomena written by Jacques Vallée and Eric Davis. Most people will already be very familiar with those names, but just in case they are new to you, you can find links to their bios and other work in the episode brief. What is so significant about this paper is that it seeks to create a framework by which we can begin to analyze and integrate the parts of UFO encounters that rarely make it into sci-fi media, and even more rarely make it into serious discussions about the phenomenon itself—which is the undeniable and pervasive occurrence of events and effects that are traditionally relegated to the realms of high strangeness and the paranormal. If there's nothing else that you take away from this episode it should be this—encounters with UFOs and non-human intelligence are much, much weirder than you've probably been led to believe. What data supports the idea that Oumuamua could have been space junk from another civilisation from another civilisation? Why is it so important that the Galileo Project at Harvard looks for more such objects? Why is science finally taking the UAP Phenomenon seriously? Today we're going to find out about new developments in the SETI discussion (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) that has been prompted by the anomalous interstellar object Oumuamua, that passed through the solar system in 2017. Since the cosmologist, sceptic and TV presenter Carl Sagan helped normalise the topic for serious scientific consideration, SETI has been a thriving, if underfunded, scientific endeavour with multiple techniques being used, not just listening for radio signals; but which until recently hasn't found anything to write home about, despite a few false alarms. Until the arrival of Oumuamua, today's guest, Avi Loeb wasn't really involved in the SETI debate, but his SETI interpretation of the data on this object, and his impeccable reputation as former chair of the astronomy department at Harvard University has brought him into the debate with a bang. He is the Frank B. Baird Jr Professor of Science at Harvard, author of over 700 scientific papers, and receiver of so many awards and accolades I won't list them there. Avi is also the author of 4 books, of which we'll be discussing two today. First his New York Times bestseller ‘Extraterrestrial' about Oumuamua, and second his new book that's just out “Interstellar: the search for extra terrestrial life and out future in the stars”. To add further taboo to this newly invigorated debate, we'll also be talking about the 2017 NYTimes story on military UFO encounters, which revealed that the US Government had not only been secretly studying the UFO Phenomenon, but also covered the extraordinary ‘TicTac' case around the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, witnessed by multiple pilots and including radar blip confirmation. All of which has led to Congress passing a new law obliging military witnesses to testify about these incidents and alleged black projects working on this kind of technology, and to the June 2021 report form the Director of National intelligence (see show notes). Having never known this was even a real confirmed phenomena, and knowing Avi has since become involved in the scientific debate on this topic too, this interview was particularly curious. Did Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb discover the remnants of an interstellar meteor in the form of spherules on the ocean floor? Could they be of alien origin? In today's special edition of The Michael Shermer Show the guest, Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb announces that he has discovered material from a large interstellar object from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea in an expedition he led over the summer. The object, which he labels IM1—Interstellar Meteor 1—collided with Earth nearly a decade ago and was tracked by U.S. government satellites, which gave Loeb and his team coordinates of where to look. Most of the meteor burned up in the atmosphere but tiny spherules remained on the ocean bottom, which Loeb retrieved and had analyzed in labs at Harvard, UC Berkeley, and the Broker Corporation. These spherules are tiny—smaller than a grain of sand—and there are literally trillions of them around the world of both terrestrial and extraterrestrial origin, so whether or not these particular spherules are Interstellar in origin remains to be seen, despite Loeb's confidence that they are. Here is what he announced today in a press release: The Interstellar Expedition of June 2023–led by the expedition's Chief Scientist, Harvard University Astrophysicist Avi Loeb and coordinated by Expedition Leader Rob McCallum of EYOS Expeditions retrieved hundreds of metallic spheres thought to be unmatched to any existing alloys in our solar system from the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea. Early analysis shows that some spherules from the meteor path contain extremely high abundances of Beryllium, Lanthanum and Uranium, labeled as a never-seen-before “BeLaU” composition. These spherules also exhibit iron isotope ratios unlike those found on Earth, the Moon and Mars, altogether implying an interstellar origin. The loss of volatile elements is consistent with IM1's airburst in the Earth's atmosphere. “The “BeLaU” composition is tantalizingly different by factors of hundreds from solar system materials, with beryllium production through spallation of heavier nuclei by cosmic-rays flagging interstellar travel,” says Avi Loeb. The press release of August 29, 2023 was timed with the publication date of Dr. Loeb's new book, Interstellar, whose subtitle hints at the scientist's larger ambitions: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Our Future in the Stars. Dr. Loeb's co-authored paper has not been peer reviewed. In fact, none of the world's leading experts on spherules from space have even seen any of Dr. Loeb's evidence. So in preparation for this episode, I contacted Peter Brown, an astronomer at Western University, Ontario, who specializes in the physics of meteors, and he directed me to the five leading experts in the world on spherules. These include: George Flynn, SUNY, Plattsburgh; Don Brownlee, University of Washington; John Bradley, University of Hawaii; Michael Zolensky, NASA; and Matthew Genge, Imperial College, London. I also consulted Steven Desch, from Arizona State University, as he has been quoted elsewhere as a critic of Avi Loeb's research. All expressed their skepticism about Dr. Loeb's findings, which I read on air to Avi to get his response. (See the show notes for this episode on skeptic.com.) Listen to the experts and Dr. Loeb's response to their skepticism in this episode. (Note: Steven Desch's initial statement, included in the show notes, was so negative that I chose not to read it on air, but include it in the show notes on skeptic.com for full disclosure of what he thinks about this research. I also included Dr. Desch's additional comments on why many scientists are skeptical of the U.S. government data on the meteor's trajectory and impact site.) I should note that I am a member of the Galileo Project team, which organized this expedition, and I consider Avi a friend and colleague who always welcomes my skepticism in our weekly team meetings. To that end let me emphasize that he is not claiming to have discovered alien technology, only the remnants of an interstellar object. Unfortunately, the media coverage surrounding the Galileo Project in general and this expedition in particular is only interested in whether or not we have made contact with ET. We have not, and Avi is not claiming that we have. No matter the scientific find is, the media reports it as aliens, aliens, and aliens. Alas. My own view is that aliens are very likely out there somewhere—given the astronomical numbers of hundreds of billions of galaxies, each of which has hundreds of billions of stars, each of which has planets it seems highly unlikely that we're alone in the cosmos—but that they have very likely not come here in any shape or form—nonhuman biologics or extraterrestrial metalogics (my own neologism echoing government whistleblower David Grusch's ridiculous description of alien pilots as “nonhuman biologics” in his Congressional testimony). The universe is vast and consists of mostly empty space. The odds are very long indeed that anyone could find us, much less leave traces for us to evaluate. But in keeping with Cromwell's Rule in Bayesian reasoning (never assign a 0 or 1 probability to anything because, as Oliver Cromwell famously said, “I beseech you in the bowels of Christ you might be mistaken”), we should keep an open mind and keep looking. That is why I support the SETI program and am on the Galileo Project team. The odds are long but the payoff would be spectacular if we ever did discover extraterrestrial intelligence or the technological artifacts of an extraterrestrial civilization. Abraham (Avi) Loeb is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University, the longest-serving chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, the founding director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative, and the current director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. He also heads the Galileo Project, chairs the Advisory Committee for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative, and is former chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies. Author of eight books and more than a thousand scientific papers, Loeb is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Astronautics. In 2012, Time selected Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space. He lives near Boston, Massachusetts.
We have been asking the question as long as we have been able to look up at the stars. Is there life out there in the cosmos? What would it be like? What are the implications for us if there is? And especially, how might extraterrestrial life impact our understanding of the Bible and of the Christian faith. Find out from an expert cosmologist who has asked this question himself. In 1983, two Japanese scientists, Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, pioneers in the field of radioastronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), got inebriated as they celebrated the Tanabata star festival. They decided to use a radio telescope at Stanford to send a message to one of the brightest stars in the sky, Altair. In the message was information about our planet, our evolution, the human species, and even a high-spirited sign-off, sending both the English word "TOAST" and the Japanese equivalent, "KANPAI" (乾杯). And I love the playful sentiment. 40 years later, their scientific progeny are listening for a response. Spoiler alert. We haven't heard back... yet. But we also explore the nature of these and other messages to possible intelligent alien life out there listening like we are. We touch upon SETI, the Arecibo message, and a few other attempts at establishing a first contact with an extraterrestrial alien species. Thanks so much for watching. ▸ Want to leave a tip or connect?:
This week the I am reading from Claire Broad's 'Heaven Sent: Soul Lessons from the Afterlife' and Mark Carlotto's book 'Not of This World: An Emerging Picture of the UFO Phenomenon'.Claire BroadMost people understand Mediumship as the practice of passing on information from deceased loved ones who bring a message that they live on. However, there is so much more to spirit communication. Claire Broad, accredited medium and spiritual teacher explains how, as a conduit between two worlds, she is uniquely placed to receive and communicate wisdom about our soul's journey from the deceased and her guides. After experiencing her own profound soul connection and receiving coaching from her team of spirit guides, Claire has been asked by the spirit world to write on their behalf, about the soul and unconditional love. From soul families, to soulmates and twin flames, there are many expressions of soul connections, each one perfectly designed to lead us back to pure unconditional love and our soul within. Even the most difficult and painful relationships serve a higher spiritual purpose, teaching us to live fearlessly, love without condition, have compassion for all souls on Earth, as well as enjoy a life of greater joy, purpose and meaning. Lessons from the afterlife prepare us for our own inevitable physical death and the soul's journey back to the spirit world. When we are ready to see the truth of the soul, we can learn the value in every relationship including the most important of all, the one we hold with ourselves. We can discover we are enough, we are never alone, nor can we be separated from those we love even after death. We are all connected in this world and the next.BioClaire Broad is a medium, spiritual teacher and bestselling author. She gave her first message from the spirit world to a relative at the age of four and began developing her ability as a medium from the age of 21. We start the last recap with the party collectively searching for answers to how the Constable got the drop on them. Were they tracked by magical means? Shanks and Arguile spoke with Elrin about this and the name Arioch. Meanwhile, a figure approached the group, a Kalashtar woman named Voyas who told the group she was led to them by the Daughter of the Flame. The party cautiously accepts her and heads into what they discover is the grand temple to the Daughters. They speak with an Unillum named Izel who informs them that they must pass 3 trials, two of which they pass: one of wit and one of grit, and another one that they must have a boon in order to complete. After a brief deliberation amongst the group they decide to go to Nymora to allow Zechs to reunite with his family, and get answers on what happened to Zechs, Kyver and so many of the children of Nymora as well. A bittersweet reunion unfolded with Zechs and his parents Seti and Rinde. They caught up and the group decided to stay over the next few days in Nymora to rest, gather intel, and allow the family to make up for time lost. The group did some shopping and Zechs split off from the group to go to the library where he received a wellspring of knowledge of the history of Sloane, the Arbitors, and past cults throughout Sloane and abroad. This became the center of his focus because while on his way there he heard something that chilled him to his core, but he decided to suppress and focus on the task at hand. The rest of the group, minus Zechs, decide to visit the temple of the Light of Elrin and learn that Shanks and Arguile are amongst his first “chosen”. On the other side of the city, Zechs meets with a family whose daughter had a very similar story to Kyver's. Later back at Zechs' family home they reconvene and discuss their day's findings. Arguile, Galahad, and Voyas piece together a story from olden times and its connection to Arguile's rapier. After dinner, Zechs uses Speak with Plants to commune through his home in the trees of Nymora, connected to the Heartwood, and thus heard from Amina the current Arbitor that she was expecting them. The party decided to shift their plans to make their way towards Amina and the Heartwood in a few days once an airship was available to take them. Arguile and Shanks were tasked with staying behind to watch for their possible tail and ensure the safety of Zechs' parents. Galahad was tasked with bringing back a piece of the root of the Heartwood in exchange for enchanting his armor. Shanks has another conversation with Elrin and agreed via contract to help unlock elements of his bow, Mind's Eye, in exchange for removing certain targets from a list that Elrin would provide. The rest of the party arranges for travel on a luxury airship, where Zechs reveals the disturbing occurrence he had on the way to the library, just days before. He makes the connection between a memory of his childhood, the cults, and sacrifices. Galahad uses his divine sense and discovers an aspect of the god Malar within Zechs. While on a stakeout Shanks and Arguile have an in-depth history lesson on Shanks time with Rig and the S8. Afterwards finding an individual of suspicion that they decide to look into and tail. There's so much happening and we pick up with arc 12, “Not What They Seem”. How will the rest of this story unfold? Find out next time on the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage!

This week we take a deep dive into our expanding potential in every single decade of the aging process. Our guest, Carl Honoré, is raising eyebrows with his novel insights about aging, with special emphasis on how it improves collaboration in diverse groups, the advantages we are gaining with age, and the things to look forward to that we can't get to any other way. 00:00 Preview 00:47 Aging as An Adventure Society bombards us with the idea that aging is a form of surrender or a disease, or a curse. We should embrace aging as it's natural. We can embrace aging as a process of opening doors rather than closing them. We have a cult around “youth”' We are all grappling with the passage of time. We can approach aging with a spirit of optimism. We should embrace milestone birthdays instead of mourning them. “Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.” - David Bowie Research has shown that buying into ageism and the cult of youth can increase your chances of: Buying into ageism and the cult of youth is the ultimate act of harm. 04:26 Ageism: A Problem We Can Solve Debbie Shore appeared on Episode 136 of the Conspiracy of Goodness Podcast and spoke about the importance of solving the problems that we can solve. Ageism is a problem we can solve. Ageism affects all of us and therefore fixing it can help us all. In today's world, we're living better lives for longer. While we might lose physical ability gradually there's still a lot we can do. Carl recently got chosen to play for The Great Britain masters national ball hockey team. Ages can be seen the same way as levels in a video game. In Carl's book, Bolder, he speaks to the value of the experience we gain as we get older. 04:26 Creativity People can be creative at all stages of their lives. Some forms of creativity can only be attained with time and experience. Young people do not have a monopoly on creativity. History is full of examples of people doing creative work later on in their lives e.g Beethoven, Bach, Michaelangelo, etc. In the UK, where Carl lives, there's a Turner Prize for visual artists that had an age cap of 50 years old. The age cap on the Turner Prize was removed in 2017 because the Chair of the organization stated that a creative breakthrough can be made at any age. 16:11 Break 21:38 The U-Shaped Happiness Curve Human beings follow a U-shaped happiness curve. The adults around the world who report the highest levels of life satisfaction are the over 55's. Scientists have found a similar U shaped happiness curve in chimpanzees, bonobos, and orangutans which suggests that a happiness boost later on in life is within our primate genes. One theory about happiness later in life suggests that happy grandparents lead to longevity in tribes. 28:28 An Upbeat Perspective Whatever you're grappling with, you get back what you put into the world. If you default to doom and gloom you won't get a whole lot of joy back. So much of what is good with the world starts with us as individuals. 30:24 The Talent Shortage There is currently a talent shortage and a high number of underemployed people. We need to structurally change the way people finance their retirement and the way savings plans are set up. Older workers have been frozen out or pushed off the off ramp of the working world. Older people are still willing and able to work. Companies are changing their approach to older staff. Companies are introducing initiatives to make older staff feel more welcomed and to welcome back older staff that have retired. Programs geared toward older staff include: Keeping people with institutional knowledge is critical. Dr. Jill Tarter retired as the director of the SETI institute at 80 years old and had a wealth of institutional knowledge that would have been lost if she retired at 65. Hear her story on Episode 128 of theConspiracy of Goodness Podcast. We pay the price when we put experienced people to pasture...

Jim talks with Sara Walker and Lee Cronin about the ideas in their Aeon essay "Time Is an Object." They discuss the history of the idea of time, Newton's clockwork universe, the capacity for things to happen, the impossibility of time travel, Einstein's block universe theory, making time testable, conceptions of the arrow of time, irreversibility as an emergent property, the core of assembly theory, measures of complexity, recursive deconstruction, distinguishing random & complex, Kolmogorov complexity, the absence of a useful theory of complexity, counting steps in the assembly pathway, developing theories from measurement, the size of chemical possibility space, the role of memory in the creation of large organic chemicals, memory depth, the assembly index, the origins of life, a sharp phase transition between biotic & non-biotic molecules, life as a stack of objects, a phase transition between life & technology, techno-signatures, error correction in DNA, whether assembly theory is a theory of time, the temporal dimension as a physical feature of objects, implications for SETI & the Fermi paradox, spotting the difference between noise & assembly, the Great Perceptual Filter, looking for complexity in the universe, the probability of life originating, and much more. Episode Transcript "Time is an object," by Sara Walker and Lee Cronin (Aeon) JRS EP5 - Lee Smolin on Quantum Foundations and Einstein's Unfinished Revolution Professor Sara Walker is an astrobiologist and theoretical physicist. Her work focuses on the origins and nature of life, and in particular whether or not there are universal ‘laws of life' that would allow predicting when life emerges and can guide our search for other examples on other worlds. Her research integrates diverse perspectives ranging from chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy and the foundations of physics, to computer science, cheminformatics, artificial life, artificial intelligence and consciousness. At Arizona State University she is Deputy Director of the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science, Associate Director of the ASU-Santa Fe Institute Center for Biosocial Complex Systems and Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration. She is also a member of the External Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. She is active in public engagement in science, with appearances on "Through the Wormhole", NPR's Science Friday, and on a number of international science festivals and podcasts. She has published in leading research journals and is an internationally recognized thought leader in the study of the origins of life, alien life and the search for a deeper understanding of ourselves in our universe. Leroy (Lee) Cronin is the Regius Professor of Chemistry in Glasgow. Since the age of 9 Lee has wanted to explore chemistry using electronics to control matter. His research spans many disciplines and has four main aims: the construction of an artificial life form; the digitization of chemistry; the use of artificial intelligence in chemistry including the construction of ‘wet' chemical computers; the exploration of complexity and information in chemistry. His recent work on the digitization of chemistry has resulted in a new programming paradigm for matter and organic synthesis and discovery – chemputation – which uses the worlds first domain specific and universal programming language for chemistry – XDL, see XDL-standard.com. His team designs and builds all their own robots from the ground up and the team currently has 25 different robotic systems operating across four domains: Organic synthesis; Energy materials discovery; Nanomaterials discovery; Formulation discovery. All the systems use XDL and are easily programmable for both manufacture and discovery. His group is organised and assembled transparently around ideas, avoids hierarchy, and aims to mentor researchers using a problem-based approach. Nothing is impossible until it is tried.
