What if the best person to solve the mystery of alien communication isn't a SETI researcher or a radio astronomer, but instead a theoretical physicist trained in the deepest notions of physical law, symmetries, and quantum field theory? Well, today, I'm joined by Latham Boyle, a renowned theoretical physicist exploring the fundamental symmetries of the universe and developing new ideas to understand how the universe began. But his research goes beyond that—he's also tackling one of the greatest mysteries of all time: the Fermi Paradox. After explaining everything we need to know about symmetries, Latham shares his bold theory of a mirror universe, where the cosmos is symmetric across the Big Bang, and how that could explain the strange silence from the stars. We explore how this radical idea might reshape our understanding of dark matter, the origin of the universe, and why advanced civilizations might be using quantum signals we're simply not equipped to detect. How your deck of cards was used as resources and life was a mechanic I really liked. I wish there were other games that used a similar mechanic. Too bad this game is long and gone. Telanislyon Blast from the past! Good game. I actually heard they were still running tournaments for this game. I also think the entire set is available for print online somewhere for free. I haven't played Disney Lorcana, but I thought the layout looked very similar to SWCCG. Sopdebop On the subject of multi use cards, I'd like to nominate SETI. Cards have 4 definite uses and can also be exchanged for other resources (free action, scan, tuck and card effect). I think that's impressive.  I also really like the cards in windmill valley. The assistant cards can be used for ongoing game bonus OR end game bonus. There is always one initial assistant left over which doubles as the queen's contract on the reverse too, which is neat imo.   Castle Combo Clarification Cory pointed out something I had missed when I taught Castle Combo. You can spend a key to wipe the current row of cards. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Kovi laughed as Benjamin's mind was blown when hearing this knowledge nugget from this week's guest, researcher for the SETI Institute, Dr. Chenoa Tremblay. Who, you asked? Let's put it this way - if there are alien civilizations out there, Chenoa is the person who's going to find it. Seriously. Name a radio telescope - chances are she's used it to look for life, or signs of life, out there in the cosmos. Join us as we discuss biosignatures, technosignatures, and strong opinions on pizza.

In this episode of This Week in Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik talk with Dr. Jim Green, former NASA Chief Scientist. He discusses how we can search for technosignatures that might indicate advanced civilizations in other star systems, new ideas on Mars sample return, and his fascinating experience consulting on the movie, The Martian! Also: this week's robotic landings on the Moon - one successful, one partly so; what's up with the USAF X-37B mini-shuttle; and recent news on those Energizer Bunnies of space, Voyagers 1&2. Their wings have been clipped a bit, but they just keep going... join us! News Lunar Landing Week: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander achieved a flawless touchdown in Mare Chrisium, the Intuitive Machines Athena lander reached the Moon's south polar region but experienced issues with its navigation radar (and tipped over), and SpaceX's Starship test flight 8 successfully caught its booster for the third time but lost control of the upper stage, resulting in the breakup of the upper stage and debris over the Bahamas and Caribbean. NASA powered down additional instruments on both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 to extend their remaining power supply, including Voyager 1's cosmic ray system that helped confirm its entry into interstellar space in 2012. The secretive US Space Force X-37B space plane landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base after 434 days in orbit, completing its seventh mission, which tested new orbital capabilities, including aerobraking techniques. A newly released list showcases the world's top ten locations for dark skies and stargazing, with the US only having only one location—in Hawaii—to make the list. Dr. Jim Green His Career: Dr. Green goes over his former role as NASA's Chief Scientist and highlights key aspects of his career, including running the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) and leading NASA's Planetary Science Division, and how his interest in space first began. The Martian: Dr. Green also explains how he got involved as a consultant for Ridley Scott's movie, "The Martian," and how NASA got really involved with the film. He also shares his favorite scene from the movie. NASA's Search for Alien Civilizations: Dr. Green shares how he helped shift NASA's focus from traditional SETI to searching for technosignatures like Dyson Spheres and O'Neill structures in other star systems, securing $10 million in funding for research that could detect megastructures in our astronomical data while noting that humanity may need similar space habitats in 800 million years when the sun makes Earth uninhabitable. Mars Sample Return Strategy: Dr. Green explains how NASA's evolving plan to return samples fropm Mars includes developing Mars Ascent Vehicles that could eventually support human missions while revealing that Perseverance was deliberately designed to place sample tubes on the surface so any nation could retrieve them, making the mission more politically viable with budget offices and Congress. Humanity's Cosmic Future: Dr. Green reveals that he helped create NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program to support new companies for lunar missions. Despite early failures, he emphasized that humanity must utilize space resources and capabilities to ensure our species' long-term survival. We're experimenting and would love to hear from you!In this episode of ‘Discover Daily', we explore groundbreaking developments across finance, international relations, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. We begin with the remarkable story of Minotaur Capital, a Sydney-based hedge fund achieving an 18.7% return through innovative AI-driven investment strategies, showcasing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in financial markets. We then delve into an unprecedented diplomatic dispute between Mexico and Google over the digital renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for US users, following a recent executive order. This controversy highlights the complex intersection of technology, territorial sovereignty, and international relations in our increasingly digital world. Our main story examines a revolutionary study from Penn State and University of Munich researchers that challenges long-held beliefs about intelligent life in the universe. The research suggests that human-like intelligence might be a natural outcome of planetary evolution rather than a series of improbable events, potentially transforming our approach to the search for extraterrestrial life and our understanding of humanity's place in the cosmos. From Perplexity's Discover Feed:https://www.perplexity.ai/page/ai-hedge-fund-beats-market-eC6zLLp0StGVEtZh79gPTQ https://www.perplexity.ai/page/mexico-threatens-google-over-g-Hv6QT9FuSBOsq342XnaBZw https://www.perplexity.ai/page/model-suggests-intelligent-lif-YwaqBI0KQKufX9kXZKvVrwIntroducing Perplexity Deep Research:https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-perplexity-deep-research Perplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. Seti has been on the hot list for awhile and during a convention where we had no interruptions in our play time, we got it to the table. Up front, this is one of those games where the actions are easy to understand on a players turn, but all the little stuff takes the time to explain. Then when playing the game, you have to concentrate on how it will all go together based on the cards you have acquired. Lots to plan out, time crunch to beat other players to certain goals and you can't do it all which is a common theme in this game. Altay was fresh when it came to a deck building game and one that we all enjoyed when it was on the table. It can promote a little pile on during the game, but that is when other players need to come to the rescue of the player that is getting beat upon. If you are not a friend of strong conflict in deck builders, then this may not be the game for you. We have been fortunate enough to have the chance to play Prey and now Rainbow card games from All Play. Love this well thought out games and different takes on proper trick-taking games. With Rainbow, playing up to six is what sold me on this game because tough to find games that do trick taking well with six. Amid the swirling vastness of galaxies, each a cosmic city of stars and planets, the silence raises a compelling question: could the very nature of galaxies themselves hold the key to why intelligent life remains unseen?Watch my exclusive video The Fermi Paradox: Air https://nebula.tv/videos/isaacarthur-the-fermi-paradox-airGet Nebula using my link for 40% off an annual subscription: https://go.nebula.tv/isaacarthurGet a Lifetime Membership to Nebula for only $300: https://go.nebula.tv/lifetime?ref=isaacarthurUse the link gift.nebula.tv/isaacarthur to give a year of Nebula to a friend for just $30.Visit our Website: http://www.isaacarthur.netJoin Nebula: https://go.nebula.tv/isaacarthurSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/IsaacArthurSupport us on Subscribestar: https://www.subscribestar.com/isaac-arthurFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1583992725237264/Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/IsaacArthur/Twitter: https://twitter.com/Isaac_A_Arthur on Twitter and RT our future content.SFIA Discord Server: https://discord.gg/53GAShECredits:The Fermi Paradox: Galactic Great FiltersEpisode 484; January 30, 2025Written, Produced & Narrated by: Isaac ArthurSelect imagery/video supplied by Getty Images Music Courtesy of Epidemic Sound http://epidemicsound.com/creatorPhase Shift, "Forest Night"Chris Zabriskie, "Unfoldment, Revealment"Stellardrone, "Billions and Billions"See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Say his name five times in a mirror, and Candyman, a vengeful spirit born from love, betrayal, and unspeakable violence, will appear to continue his blood-soaked legend across generations.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version. https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateInfo on the next LIVE SCREAM event. https://weirddarkness.com/LiveScreamInfo on the next WEIRDO WATCH PARTY event. https://weirddarkness.com/TVIN THIS EPISODE: If you look in a mirror and say his name five times, he will appear behind you, complete with a hook for a hand – covered in blood because his hand has been cut off. Isn't that romantic? No? Well, Clive Barker's 1992 horror cult classic “Candyman” actually began as a real-life love story. So how did it turn so gruesome and terrifying? (The Nightmarish Love Story Behind Horror's Candyman) *** The Enfield Poltergeist has become infamous thanks to Ed and Lorraine Warren and “The Conjuring” films. That took place in a house in Brimsdown, Enfield, London England. But on the other side of the pond there is an Enfield, Illinois. Not as well known as the one in England of course, but they still have a horror in their past. One that took place four years before the Enfield incident in London… about a terrifying creature that locals who were alive at the time still get goosebumps talking about. (The Horror of the Enfield, Illinois Monster) *** Complex family dynamics and an infatuated businessman ended in a murder that was covered up and remained hidden for three decades, buried in the grounds of the house at 10324 Canyon Road. (A Dark Secret Leads To a Death On Canyon Road) *** One girl decided to go by the name of Lila, because her true name was Delilah but she didn't want to be associated with that harlot in the Bible. The stories behind how people get nicknames can often be fascinating. So how do you supposed Margaret Dickson got tagged with the nickname of “Half Hangit Maggie”? (Half Hangit Maggie) *** The search for intelligent life in the universe has been a goal for decades, with everyone from NASA to SETI to backyard Ufologists looking to the skies, listening to various radio waves, hoping to catch just a glimpse, at least a hint of what we hope to find. But could it be that we're looking in the wrong place? Perhaps the extraterrestrial intelligence, the more advanced life we seek to make contact with, is not out there somewhere… but it is here somewhere… already on Earth? (There Might Be Intelligent Life On Earth After All) *** Too often we are let down by those whom we look up to – and that goes doubly so for those in religious authority. How many well-known religious figures have toppled over after being exalted on high by the followers they so skillfully misled? Jim Bakker, Robert Tilton, Ted Haggard, Jimmy Swaggart… but none compare to Major Thomas Weir – a strict Presbyterian known for his powerful prayers, earning him a reputation for being one of the most saintly men of his time. But then he made a confession so outlandish, so ghastly and profane, they executed him.
