Get married, buy a house, raise a family. For many of us, that's the expected life trajectory. Are we entitled to meet that expectation? If many follow the typical trajectory, including having two or more children, then we drive human civilization right off a cliff. On an overpopulated planet, does society have an obligation to make parenthood possible, practical, convenient, and/or affordable to all? Public policy on the table in the U.S. today is designed to make it easier for couples to have children. Ethicist Philip Cafaro joins us to discuss the motivations behind these policies and the moral questions about whether people are “entitled” to have children on an overpopulated planet. In this episode, we hear some unenlightened statements about U.S. population from U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, including inviting listeners to conclude U.S. population is declining (it is not), and a healthy dose of depopulation panic. Cafaro is professor of philosophy at Colorado State University and an affiliated faculty member of CSU's School of Global Environmental Sustainability. He's also written a couple of books about human overpopulation, and he is co-founder of The Overpopulation Project. Ever been curious about the claims people make about “clean wines”? In the same camp as “natural wines” and “better for you wines,” clean wines have no definition and often deploy misleading marketing to get you to buy their wines. They take advantage of the trend, particularly with Millenials, around a healthy lifestyle and spread misinformation in their marketing, according to sommelier and wine educator Erik Segelbaum.  Explore the rationale behind the clean wine trend and how to read into their marketing messages on this episode of XChateau!Don't forget - you can support the show on Patreon to help us keep bringing you excellent wine business content!Detailed Show Notes:Erik's backgroundWas a chef in fine dining at the Park Hyatt PhiladelphiaAs he grew into wine, he stopped drinking for alcohol and more for flavorHe became a sommelier because it was more profitable than being a chefSOMLYAY (Erik's company)Does private events, education (including with the Smithsonian), a wine writer, private cellar consulting, and hospitality/wine list consultingHas done >300 private events in the past year, primarily virtualWrote an article called “Snake Oil for Sale: The Dirty Business of Clean Wine” (pg16) for the Sept / Oct 2021 issue of The Tasting Panel magazineThe impetus for the article - Erik always gets the same questions during consumer events around sulfites, natural/clean/healthy/“better for you” winesHe gets lots of ads using manipulative advertising around the winesDefinition of Clean WineIt's an invented word. There is no definition, no standards - it doesn't actually mean anythingImplies other wines are “unclean”Drivers of the clean wine trendMillennials have taken over as the dominant wine buying cohort. They like “healthy,” and the trend is playing to their preferencesCelebrity endorsements backing trend (e.g., Cameron Diaz's Avaline)Clean wine claims are not false but spreading misinformation and are “lying by omission”E.g., all wines are gluten-freeVegan - sometimes animal products (e.g., egg whites) are used in fining but not really put into wineOrganic - does not mean any chemicals, just no synthetic chemicals (e.g., sulfites are organic and a good thing - required to make wine otherwise, nature turns grape juice into vinegar)Additives - there can be bad ones (e.g., Velcorin, which is hazardous in large quantities, and Mega Purple, which adds color and sweetness)Need to distinguish between “industrially produced wines” and “commercially produced”Industrial wines are mainly on the bottom shelf of retail and are highly manipulated wines (e.g., use lots of additives)Commercially produced can be well-produced wines, even at a commercial scaleClean wine “obscures transparency”They often manipulate where the wines are produced (e.g., don't mention where the grapes are grown, only that they are produced and bottled in a specific place)Targets naive consumersAn excellent example of transparency - Ridge Vineyards - has ingredient labeling and all relevant details on the label

If You Want To Use Breathwork Effectively, You Should: Be sure to nasal breathe on your day today Always focus on a slow, deep breath  Explore breathwork apps like Othership   Breathwork has been a powerful tool that has helped me reset my stress response patterns and create a greater sense of peace and transformation. Feeling stressed is the new normal for many women, but it doesn't have to be that way. If you can learn how to control your breath, you can rewire your brain and reset your stress response system using something you do every single day.   Creating Breakthrough Experiences with Amanda Laine Amanda Laine is the co-founder of Othership, the leading digital breathwork content creator. Othership was born out of the desire to help people do breathwork online or in-person to experience the transformative power of breathwork. Amanda combines breathwork, hypnosis, movement, and sound in innovative ways, which has led to thoughts of breakthrough experiences. She is passionate about helping others build resilience and transform their lives through the Othership app.   Don't Take Your Breath for Granted One of the reasons many of us have become so bad at responding to stress is because of all of the comforts our lives contain, compared to the hunters and gatherers that came before us. Because we don't need to be running for food or being worried about getting eaten by a bear, our brain has been rewired to stress out about other things instead. Utilizing breathwork is one of the easiest ways to help calm your central nervous system in times of stress. Most of us take our breath for granted, but it is the key to resetting our body's stress response and bringing ourselves back to equilibrium.   The Best Way to Release Your Stress Even if you have tried breathwork in the past, you have probably never tried it the Othership way. In as little as 4 minutes, Othership can help you release in the comfort of your own home, which Amanda has found to lead to more intense and more fulfilling breathwork sessions.  Breathwork can help you rewire your state of consciousness, heal trauma, release stuck energy patterns and those thoughts that aren't serving you. The direct evidence of how breathwork, and stressors like sauna and cold-plunge therapy, can help you shift out of parasympathetic stress is undeniable. Are you ready to access this powerful tool that is available to you every single day? Share your experience with breathwork with me in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “The breath is everything. The breath is your direct relation and direct connection to your nervous system. So if your breath is in any way constricted, and so too is that exact degree to your life, they follow suit.” (8:51) “For me, I like to explain breathwork as an active form of meditation, so you are using an anchor to keep yourself in the present moment, and that anchor is your breath.” (14:29) “When you feel a session, you feel better than when you started. It is a tangible result.” (20:45) “It is a full experience. You can go really deep. And instead of going to a bar or a restaurant or the classic things people do with friends, like drinking. There are other ways to expand your consciousness and actually come out of it and talk with your friends in a way you never have before. It will open you up, which is what I think is what alcohol doesn't do.” (22:35) “We go through these peaks and valleys when it comes to how stress comes about. So how can we make the valley less low? That is why exposing yourself to these stressors, like cold, like hot, helps to raise that valley point a little bit higher so that when day-to-day stressors come along, we are able to handle them a little bit better.” (25:48)   In This Episode How breathwork has helped people release stress during covid lockdowns or illness (7:10) The positives and differences of exploring breathwork virtually versus in person (11:37) What you need to know to get started and understand the experience of breathwork (14:01) Tips for running your own epic breath working session from the comfort of your own home (21:55) The benefits of cold plunge and sauna when it comes to rewiring your brain (24:21)   Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code ‘podcast' to get 10% off your order at the Essentially Whole Store Othership App Follow Othership on Instagram   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes:  Essentially You Episode #326: Powerful Techniques to Feel and Process Your ‘Mess', Including Breathwork, Meditation, and Movement with Ashely Bernardi

The Bible contains a huge amount of wisdom for us. It's the Word of God, after all.   Usually, that wisdom is most valuable to us when we are living through tragedy. Those days and nights can be among the hardest we'll ever have, because the pain seems to be too strong.   Have you ever felt like that?   Our topic this week has to do with walking by faith.   2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we live by faith, not by sight.”   What does this mean? Well, Scripture tells us that true faith in God is “the evidence of things not seen.” It gives us a picture of waiting for a promise from God; we haven't yet arrived.   If you are in that place today, make a choice to believe God. He won't fail you, not even for a second!   Let's pray. Lord, your timing is perfect, even if we can't see the end of the journey. Give us strength for that journey. Amen.   Do you want to inspire others – or maybe even inspire yourself? The Forever Cash Life Real Estate Investing Podcast: Create Cash Flow and Build Wealth like Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump

In the week's episode of the Forever Cash Podcast, Jack Bosch opens the lid of multiple 7 and 8-figure corporate land investing strategies with Land Acquisitions expert Ryan O'Donovan. One of the greatest advantages of land investing is that it's not a one-trick pony. The most basic land deal is when you buy a piece of land for below market value and flip it at market value to the right buyer over a few weeks. However, the land investing landscape is vast and varied. Land acquisition for commercial development at a corporate level is a billion-dollar industry. At this level, a single land deal may see investors moving amounts of between $10 - $20 million per deal and can take several years to yield an ROI. Students of the Land Profit Generator tend to learn how to flip land using one of the simpler, more affordable deal structures. However, as your land business grows, so does your level of mastery. When you start to build serious 7-figure capital reserves, the option of doing larger deals starts to open up. In fact, some of our students are already venturing into the Real Estate Big Leagues, closing deals in the multiple 7 and 8-figure regions. If you are looking for an example of how to flip land at the highest end of the scale, Ryan O'Donovan is about as 'big league' as it gets! In the week's episode of the Forever Cash Podcast, discover:

This week, we're re-airing one of our favorite interviews from Heart of the Matter with Elizabeth Vargas, featuring Anne and Sam Lamott. Bestselling novelist and essayist Anne Lamott had more than her share of experience with substance use disorders: Growing up with family members with addiction, she also had distinct memories of drinking as a child. Decades later, she watched as her son Sam began struggling with methamphetamines. Today, both mother and son have been in recovery for many years.Re-join Elizabeth as she speaks to Anne and Sam about addiction in the family, the influence of believing in a higher power, the importance of searching for inner grace rather than external accolades, and how it felt for Anne to witness her son's struggle with addiction as a person in recovery herself.Explore more on topics and themes discussed in this episode:When Addiction is in Your Family Tree Get One-on-One Help to Address Your Child's Substance Use What Types of Addiction Treatment Are Available?Editor's Note: The views and opinions expressed on Heart of the Matter are those of the podcast participants and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Partnership to End Addiction. We are also mindful that some of the personal stories feature the word “addict” and other terms from this list. We respect and understand those who choose to use certain terms to express themselves. However, we strive to use language that's health-oriented, accurately reflects science, promotes evidence-based treatment and demonstrates respect and compassion.

When the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, in 1933, one of their first goals was to reshape culture by force. The Nazis organized book burnings, stormed artist studios, confiscating work they disagreed with, and fired contemporary artists from teaching positions in universities. The goal was to place limits on human expression–an ominous display for what was to come. Visit the companion gallery for this episode here: https://mjdorian.com/dangerous/ The celebrated 1800's German poet, Heinrich Heine, wrote: "where books are burned, there too, people will burn." On this episode, we explore the Degenerate Art Exhibition of 1937, otherwise known as Entartete Kunst. The intended goal of the exhibit was to insult and ridicule the featured artists and kill modern art. Making it clearly known to the German public that the Nazi Party was forbidding any form of abstraction in painting, film, sculpture, or music. The suppression or censorship of art is a symptom that something is desperately wrong in the cultural fabric of a society. What happened to the artists featured in the exhibition? Did they continue making art? Did they flee or stay and protest? Why is art so dangerous? --------- Artists featured in this episode: Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, and Conrad Felixmüller. We had the pleasure of interviewing Life on Planets over Zoom video! House music has seen a reinvigoration in recent years via progressive creatives seeking to fuse classic disco, soul, funk and R&B with modern electronic sensibilities meant to relate to dance floors everywhere. At the forefront, artists like Walker & Royce have strove to lead this diverting wave of music via their label Rules Don't Apply. For its latest release, the imprint joins forces with true-blue creative Life on Planets. Explore wayfaring creativity and full-fledged euphoria via the Nomad Lyfe EP, out NOW. Nomad Lyfe is a two-sided EP featuring vocal led, dynamic dancefloor tracks. The project leads with the title track, which opens behind funky, static basslines. “Don't know where I'm about to stay tonight - all I know is Imma be alright” sets the tone for a DIY adventure in sound and intention. The lyrics proffers listeners to find independence in living their “Nomad Lyfe,” paralleled by freewheeling creativity experienced in the production. “UDidIt2Urself” is the B-side track on the EP - where fans will find more R&B-enthused production accented by melodic elements and dazzling arps. The project was written in Baltimore - Life was living in an old row-house run by art collective, The Holy Underground. Paired with samples and virtual synthes, the producer used pitched down guitar and vocals recorded in his bedroom to create the final product. This accents his performance setup, which is a hybrid of DJ/live sets that include singing, guitar and spinning a wide array of influences. Most recently, he brought this to life on the road at Dirtybird Campout, playing live with Lubelski. We want to hear from you! Imagine walking through life, knowing who you are, but not feeling like you can live as that person? That was how my guest today, Imara Jones, experienced the first half of her life, before making a series of choices that would allow her to feel safe and supported stepping back into her own life, on her terms. Imara is the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning founder of TransLash Media, a cross-platform journalism, personal storytelling and narrative project, which produces content to shift the current culture of hostility towards transgender people in the US. As part of her work at TransLash, she hosts the WEBBY-nominated, TransLash Podcast with Imara Jones as well as the investigative, limited series, The Anti-Trans Hate Machine. In 2019, she chaired the first-ever UN High-Level Meeting on Gender Diversity and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 2020 as part of its New American Revolution special edition. She's held economic policy posts in the White House and communications positions at Viacom. Imara's work as a host, on-air news analyst, contributor, and writer has been featured everywhere from The Guardian, The Nation, MSNBC, CNBC, and NPR to Mic, and Colorlines, and focuses on the full range of social justice and equity issues. We explore Imara's experiences growing up in a family and culture where revealing and living her truth felt not just uncomfortable, but unsafe, how that experience is universal to so many, and how she made choices that effectively empowered her to reclaim a sense of agency, identity, and purpose. And, we explore the power of representation in media, stories, and everyday life as a vehicle to open minds, conversation, and cultivate understanding, connection and the sense of shared humanity we all long for, especially now.You can find Imara at: Website | Instagram | TransLash PodcastIf you LOVED this episode:You'll also love the conversations we had with Thomas Page McBee.My new book Sparked.Check out our offerings & partners: Squarespace: Squarespace is the all-in-one solution for anyone looking to create a beautiful website.
