Have you ever been alone in a room, heard someone coming, and been able to identify who it was based solely on the recognisable stomp of their shoes? Maybe you've experienced seeing a group in the distance, too far to recognise faces, but you're absolutely sure one blurry figure is your friend because of the way they're swinging their arms when they walk. Research suggests that a person's movement signature, or the way they move, could be as unique as a fingerprint. So, what makes up a person's movement signature? We all have a particular way of moving our faces. One person might purse their lips when they're angry. Another might squint their eyes or pull their face into a grimace, and these movement patterns help us recognise familiar people, even in poor visibility. Another reliable clue for identifying people is their gait. The combination of stride length, limb movement, pace and posture form a movement signature that is very difficult to fake. Researchers in a 2005 study called 'Person identification from biological motion' put small lights on key parts of some male walkers' bodies. When the room was dark and their bodies invisible, observers were able to distinguish the walkers using the lights at an impressively high rate. Movement signatures are deeply human and expressive. "Dance has always been a part of my life." Brenda Loukes is a dancer and artist who uses ink and bleach to portray bodies in motion. "It occurred to me that each body has a unique blueprint for the way it moves". For dance writer Nancy Wozny, dancers who make it onto her list of 'ones to watch' are those who move in a way she's never seen before, like Stephanie Troyak who has a 'sublime awkwardness', reminding Nancy of a foal's 'first steps out of the womb', or how Ching Ching Wong can divide her body between 'wiggly-squiggly' and completely still. Whether you're dancing professionally or just walking down the street, your movements reveal who you are and tell a story that no one else can replicate.
Dance scholar Nancy Wozny highlights the life and work of Moroccan and Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Cherkaoui was honored with the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award in 2022 for his achievements in the worlds of both concert and commercial dance including choreography for Beyoncé and the Broadway production of Jagged Little Pill.
The legacy of ethnic dancer, choreographer, teacher, and scholar La Meri is explored in her own words, and in a contribution from Pillow founder Ted Shawn. She tells of her beginnings and her lifelong commitment to studying and teaching dances of other cultures, with commentary by Scholar-in-Residence Nancy Wozny.
Holy Crap We're Back... but not officially because Steph is being lazy "breastfeeding" and "not sleeping" and "raising a baby" (Whatev!). So, Abby is spending this summer of maternity leave having co-hosts and special guests. This week, she welcomes back the amazing Nancy Wozny, mom of two babies who are both pushing 30. Abby has been very freaked out after binge watching the teen drama "13 Reasons Why" and asks Nancy how you raise teens who talk and don't hate you. Nancy is a pro on both fronts and offers some solid advice on when to hover and when to leave well enough alone. Stay tuned for a Summer of Hands Off Guests, and if you want to be one, shoot us an email at handsoffparents@gmail.com.

On today’s episode, special guest Nancy Wozny schools Steph and Abby on how to someday launch our kids into adulthood. She describes how your relationship changes and your family evolves as your kids grow up and gives expert advice about why parents shouldn’t be friends with their kids and how we all need to back off during “threshold times.” She also extols the virtues of finding your mom tribe and debunks the myth of “doing it all.” At the end of the day, if everyone has a pulse, there’s food in the fridge, marginally good wine on the counter, and love between you, it’s all gonna be okay. Phew!
