On May 10, 1979, six-year-old Rebecca “Becky” Kunash went to sleep in her Merritt Island, Florida home with a night light glowing beside her bed. Sometime after midnight, while her parents slept just feet away, a man removed her window screen, entered her bedroom, and abducted her.By morning, Becky was gone. Her body was found hours later in a nearby canal.Investigators quickly focused on Bryan Jennings, a twenty-year-old Marine home on leave who had been seen in the neighborhood that night. Fingerprints, footprints, and his own confession tied him directly to the crime. Jennings admitted to taking Becky from her bed, sexually assaulting her, and killing her before dumping her body in the water.Jennings was convicted and sentenced to death, but his conviction was overturned and retried multiple times over the years. In 1986, a final death sentence was upheld. For Becky's family, justice came slowly and painfully.Nearly forty six years after the crime, Bryan Jennings was executed by lethal injection on November 13, 2025. He offered no final statement. This episode explores how a quiet night turned into a lifelong nightmare and the decades-long road to accountability for one of Florida's most heartbreaking child abduction cases.

The Brendan Banfield trial is building toward its climax, and day three delivered evidence that cuts through every defense narrative. Fairfax County detectives showed jurors what they found when they returned to the Banfield home eight months after Christine's death: fresh wood flooring where blood-soaked carpet used to be, new furniture throughout the master bedroom, and photographs of Brendan with au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães sitting on the nightstand where pictures of Brendan and Christine once belonged.Detective Terry Leach walked the jury through graphic crime scene photographs of Joseph Ryan's body—blood covering his face, hands, chest, and arms. The murder knife wasn't in Ryan's hand. It was hidden under blankets on the floor. That detail alone challenges the defense's theory that Ryan attacked Christine. DNA confirmed Christine's blood on Banfield's jeans. Fingerprints on the knife came back inconclusive. Prosecutors added that Banfield bought a gun weeks before the killings, took Juliana to a shooting range twice, and allegedly installed $30,000 in soundproof windows.The timeline crystallized with McDonald's surveillance footage: Banfield waiting in the parking lot, then exiting the bathroom at 7:37 AM with his phone pressed to his ear—the exact moment phone records show Juliana called to signal their target had arrived.But prosecutors face a complicated star witness. Juliana spent a year telling police the same story Brendan did before flipping to save herself. From jail, she wrote her mother that she was "heartbroken" for what she was doing to Brendan—that she still loved him. Former FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke, who led the Bureau's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program for 32 years, examines what genuine coercion looks like versus willing participation. The affair began six months before the killings. Juliana lived in the home, cared for the daughter, slept with the husband. Surveillance video and phone records took center stage on day three of the Brendan Banfield double murder trial as prosecutors worked to corroborate au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães's testimony with hard evidence. The jury watched footage from a McDonald's near the Banfield home showing the defendant waiting in the parking lot on the morning of February 24, 2023. At 7:37 AM, Banfield is seen leaving the bathroom with his phone pressed to his ear — matching call records that show Juliana phoned him at that exact moment.According to testimony, that call was the signal that Joseph Ryan had arrived at the house. Ryan was allegedly lured there through months of messages on the fetish website FetLife from someone he believed was Christine Banfield — but who prosecutors say was actually Brendan posing as his wife.Forensic testimony revealed Brendan's DNA was not on the knife allegedly used to kill Christine, but forensic scientist Katherine Colombo noted that police let him wash his hands before collecting samples. Blood on Banfield's jeans matched Christine's DNA. Fingerprint examiner Douglas Gudakunst testified that prints on the knife were inconclusive between Banfield and Ryan.Detectives also showed the jury photographs from eight months after the murders when they returned with a warrant. The master bedroom where Christine died had been completely transformed — new flooring, new furniture, and photos of Brendan with Juliana replacing images of Brendan with his late wife. Juliana had moved into that bedroom.Prosecutors established Banfield purchased a firearm less than a month before the killings and allegedly spent $30,000 on soundproof windows. Day three of the Brendan Banfield double murder trial delivered explosive testimony from Fairfax County detectives who revealed that just eight months after Christine Banfield was stabbed to death in her own bedroom, au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães had moved into that same room. Crime scene photographs showed the blood-stained carpet had been replaced with new wood flooring, the furniture swapped out, and framed photos of Brendan and Christine replaced with images of Brendan and Juliana together.Prosecutors played McDonald's surveillance video showing Brendan Banfield waiting in the parking lot on the morning of February 24, 2023 — exactly as Juliana testified. Phone records confirmed she called him at 7:37 AM, allegedly signaling that Joseph Ryan had arrived at the house. Call logs also showed both Brendan and Juliana made calls to Christine's phone that morning — the same phone prosecutors say was hidden in a kitchen drawer while she slept.Forensic scientist Katherine Colombo testified that Brendan Banfield's DNA was not found on the murder knife, but noted police allowed him to wash his hands before samples were collected. Blood spatter on Banfield's jeans matched Christine's DNA. Fingerprint examiner Douglas Gudakunst said prints on the knife were inconclusive between Banfield and victim Joseph Ryan.Prosecutors also established that Banfield purchased a gun less than a month before the murders and took Juliana to a shooting range twice in the weeks prior. They alleged he spent over $30,000 on triple-pane windows to muffle sounds like gunshots from inside the home.The prosecution announced they have only a few witnesses remaining. This week, we're talking about evidence. Fingerprints, Ring doorbell camera footage, witness testimony, DNA, all those clues that eventually lead investigators to perpetrators – and alleged perpetrators of crimes. Finding the evidence and using it to piece together how crimes were committed is complicated in and of itself. Things get even more complicated in the courtroom, where prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges and jurors pore over it. And administrative issues like DNA testing backlogs can snarl the process. We'll cover several cases today where we can see how evidence, or the lack of evidence, has played a role in the search for justice. We'll also focus on one type of evidence in particular -- DNA evidence – and efforts to improve how it's collected and how it's tested.
