Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, the Belgian-Moroccan dancer, choreographer and artistic director of Geneva's Grand Theatre, speaks to Dheepthika Laurent about his works "Boléro" and "Ihsane". The latter explores his complicated relationship with his late father and is a reference to a homophobic killing in 2012. Through his work, Cherkaoui has explored double culture, queer identity and removing gender boundaries. He also talks about choreographing for others: Beyoncé and Jay-Z's "Apeshit" video clip that was filmed in the Louvre museum and the "Like a Prayer" dance for Madonna's Celebration Tour last year.

In her new play Nucleus, Alana Valentine pits two passionately engaged scientists against each other, basing their arguments on real life interviews, but adding a nuclear force of attraction into the mix. We're also joined by Peter Kowitz playing Dr Gabriel Hulst. from the funny and vernacular Palawa/Pakana playwright, Nathan Maynard. In the era of AFL footballer Adam Goodes' famous war cry, two Aboriginal footy players in a regional club confront the personal cost of either staying quiet or speaking out about racism.

Jennifer White is a choreographer who occupies a unique sweet spot between RAD ballet, contemporary dance, Kylie and the year's hottest movie: she is the choreographer of Barbie. Greta Gerwig's film includes delirious dance sequences led by Margot Robbie's Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Those scenes chart the film's trajectory – in Barbie, dance really does matter. Jennifer has also choreographed films like the eerie Last Night in Soho, and worked with leading names in both pop and contemporary dance. And the young Jennifer did RAD ballet: so is Barbie herself RAD-trained? Jennifer White is a London-based movement director, performer and choreographer. She graduated from Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. In 2006 she was nominated for the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards for Emerging Artist, and in 2007, was highlighted as a breakthrough artist in The Observer's Hot List. She has toured internationally with Hofesh Shechter, Russell Maliphant, Ballet Boyz and Kylie Minogue, and has choreographed and performed for Adele and Basement Jaxx. She choreographed for Marvel Comic's ‘Avengers – Age of Ultron', where she also coached and was movement double for Elizabeth Olsen, and for Last Night in Soho. She has worked extensively with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. They stay on as cultural commentators to give their opinions of Robert De Niro's powerful new role - in an ad for bagels, the temporary ban on the export of the copy of Lady Chatterley's Lover that the judge annotated and brought with him to court when he presided at the famous obscenity trial in 1960, and, closer to home, the list of the 100 best crime novels published since 1945 - of which only 28 are by women. The impact Artificial Intelligence will have on our lives is the subject of the Barbican’s major new exhibition AI: More than Human, which also seeks to challenge our preconceptions. Tech expert Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino reviews. Medusa is an ancient myth that certainly speaks to our times, abused by a powerful male, she is somehow blamed for this and exacts revenge. The Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has chosen this tale for his first work for the Royal Ballet and has set his dance to songs by Purcell and modern electronic music. He explains to Stig Abell why he is melding the ancient, modern and Baroque. Presenter: Stig Abell Producer: Julian May

Thomas Fonua is a proud man of Samoan/Tongan descent. Born in New Zealand, Thomas started to dance at the age of seven. His mum saw that he loved to move but showed no interest in sport, so she enrolled him in dance instead. “My work is influenced by my heritage” At the young age of 16, Thomas was offered a two-year apprenticeship with Black Grace, based in Auckland. There are few professional dance opportunities in New Zealand, so gaining full-time employment was a true honour and was the start of a solid, successful career for the young dancer. Thomas was the youngest dancer in the company, with a 10-year age gap between him and the next youngest dancers. This was a significant period of growth and cemented his passion for dance. During this time Thomas toured numerous works through Europe, Asia, North America and Canada as one of the company’s leading dancers. In 2010, Thomas was invited to participate in The Banff Centre’s Indigenous Dance Residency. Thomas participated in the program for many years before being invited to take up a position as a faculty member. As a faculty member, he helps by working with and mentoring Indigenous dancers from all over the world. Thomas has since worked for Red Sky Performance in Canada, where he is an associate artist. He has worked on productions including Migration (2011) and inSIGNia (2013). Thomas has also worked with artists including Sandra Laronde, Neil Ieremia, Rafael Bonachela, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Jock Soto, Douglas Wright, Raewyn Hill, Ross McCormack and Garry Stewart. Thomas joined Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) in 2015. Subsequently, he has performed in works including Proximity, Be Your Self, Doppelganger and Habitus. He has also had his work MALAGA programmed as part of ADT’s Ignition program, which seeks to foster the next generation of choreographers. His work MALAGA explored the dark past of human zoos or ‘Volkershau’, in which individuals were brought in from colonial frontiers, for European audiences. This work drew upon ideas of exhibition, captivity and exoticism. I spoke to Thomas, in the lead up for a performance of Be Your Self, soon to open in Melbourne, the first time it will be performed in the Victorian capital. Be Your Self is a significant work for Thomas, being the first work he danced in for ADT as a guest artist during the work’s 2014 tour of Indonesia. Be Your Self is also one of his favourite pieces to perform: “Because it is so much fun” Be Your Self was created by Garry Stewart, and examines how the body is central to our identity and that our notion of the ‘self’ is indeed located in our bodies. Thomas is a fascinating and passionate dancer who will continue to bring more to the world of contemporary dance. This interview is a wide ranging discussion, which includes everything from RuPaul – “the unsung hero” – to studying business, performing in drag and what it means to be an Indigenous dancer, to preparing for performances and how Thomas aims for the future. You can find out more about Thomas Fonua on the ADT website. Check out the fabulous archive of dance makers and leaders including: Meryl Tankard, Daniel Jaber & Gideon Obarzanek And stay tuned for future episodes in this season, focussing on the experience of those currently who are dancing. This season will capture a true diversity of experiences, including Samantha Hines (ex ADT dancer, subsequently working with Dancenorth and Stephanie Lake), Melanie Lane (choreographer and performer based between Berlin and Melbourne) and Gareth Chambers (Cardiff-based Visual Dance artist recently in Australia for YIRRAMBOI festival) If you have enjoyed this episode please consider leaving a donation. Drawing on two decades worth of award-winning poetry, Marilyn Hacker’s generous selections in A Stranger’s Mirror include work from four previous volumes along with twenty-five new poems, ranging in locale from a solitary bedroom to a refugee camp. In a multiplicity of voices, Hacker engages with translations of French and Francophone poets. Her poems belong to an urban world of cafés, bookshops, bridges, traffic, demonstrations, conversations, and solitudes. From there, Hacker reaches out to other sites and personas: a refugee camp on the Turkish/Syrian border; contrapuntal monologues of a Palestinian and an Israeli poet; intimate and international exchanges abbreviated on Skype—perhaps with gunfire in the background. A Stranger’s Mirror is not meant only for poets. These poems belong to anyone who has sought in language an expression and extension of his or her engagement with the world—far off or up close as the morning’s first cup of tea. Marilyn Hacker is the recipient of the National Book Award, the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, the Robert Fagles Translation Prize, and the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry. Her collection Winter Numbers received a Lambda Literary Award and the Lenore Marshall Award of the Academy of American Poets. She lives in Paris, France. A Stranger’s Mirror was longlisted for the National Book Award. Poet and dance producer/curator, Karthika Naïr was born in Kerala and lives in Paris. Naïr is the author of Bearings (HarperCollins India, 2009), a poetry collection and The Honey Hunter/Le Tigre de Miel (Young Zubaan, India/Editions Hélium, France, 2013), a children’s book illustrated by Joëlle Jolivet. She was also the principal scriptwriter of DESH, choreographer Akram Khan’s award-winning dance production. In Karthika Naïr’s résumé as an enabler, one finds mention of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet, Käfig/Mourad Merzouki, two Olivier awards, Auditorium Musica per Roma, the Louvre, the Shaolin Temple, misadventures with ninja swords and pachyderms, among others, many of which make their way willy-nilly into her poetry (though, hopefully, not into this retelling of the Mahabharata)."
