My Music with Graham Coath – Featuring Fransis
Which artist is better: Alanis Morissette or Fiona Apple? Radio and podcast hosts Jenny Eliscu and Julia Cunningham take on this nostalgic alternative rock battle. Julia argues that “Jagged Little Pill” hits her just as hard at age 40 as it did at age 10, which is a remarkable feat for an artist to achieve. Jenny says Fiona has gotten better with each album she’s released, and her willingness to be vulnerable in her music combined with her willingness to retreat from the limelight make for a combination that’s hard to top. Which singer-songwriter will Ronald Young Jr. decide should win this tough debate? Follow Jenny @jennylsq on Instagram and X. Julia is @juliacunninghaaam on Instagram and @juliacunningham on X. My guest for Episode #166 is a daughter, a fiancée, a mother, and an artist. She has a tremendous aura about her. She's been blessed with compassion, intelligence, talent, determination, fantastic conversational skills, and she has boldly faced that which life has dealt her.Her name is Morgen Agesen, and she deserves steadfast applause for being an awesome human being. As Executive Assistant for Art Garden KC, Lead Designer for Worlds of Fun, and In-House Muralist for Vignettes Bar, Morgen still manages to find time for her own work, and on top of all that, she made a hearty trek to my place for a healthy chunk of one of her Saturdays, leaving me both impressed and grateful. We talked growing up, family, moving, navigating both the rocky seas and consistency of curve balls that life often presents, as well as both the creation and the vending of art. We talked about the coolness behind the purpose of such a thing as Art Garden KC (artgardenkc.org & @artgardenkc on the Socials), and it wouldn't've been a proper episode of Badass Records if we didn't have a peek at a few of her favorite records. So, we did, and those were these:Jagged Little Pill (1995), Alanis MorissetteGorillaz' Demon Days (2005)Alopecia (2008), Why?Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel... (2012)While I'm happy that you have read this far (and I don't want you to quit now), I'd be tickled if you considered giving our conversation a view or a listen. But beyond that, please give Art Garden KC a follow (or at least a look-see). They are a fascinating source for facilitating popup markets and festivals in a way that joins artists and vendors with the community, and I can't speak loud enough to the importance of having such an organization in our midst right here in Kansas City. So, please use them. Consider them. Know about them. Share about them.Thank you for supporting the progrum.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are clips from an aptly named tune called, "Saturday," which is a Real Estate song from their 2017 release, In Mind (c/o Domino Recording Co Ltd).

Matt's birthday-inspired journey through debut albums from 1995 reveals the remarkable beginnings of artists who would shape music for decades to come. The mix includes everything from Alanis Morissette's record-breaking "Jagged Little Pill" to Dave Grohl's post-Nirvana reinvention with Foo Fighters. The mid-90s represented a pivotal moment in music history. Grunge was evolving, electronic music was gaining mainstream traction, and powerful female voices were reshaping rock and pop. We dive deep into tracks that showcase these shifts – like Garbage's ironic commentary on angst in "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" and The Chemical Brothers' groundbreaking electronic soundscapes on "Exit Planet Dust."What's particularly striking is how many of these artists continue creating vital music today. Ben Folds, Guster, The Chemical Brothers and others have evolved their sound while maintaining the creative essence first displayed in those 1995 debuts. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/matt-2025-birthday-mix/pl.u-EPWWTVMmxr1. Here at Dig Me Out we spent the last ten years starting each new season by looking back at the albums from each year that stood the test of time, disappeared without a trace, and everything in between. We kicked off with a roundtable in 2015 and revisited the albums of 1995, so it made sense to start a new series of roundtables in 1995 as well. This time we're checking out the singles of each year, looking at the year-end Modern Rock/Alternative and Hot 100 charts in the US, as well as charts from Canada, the UK and Australia for comparison. Like with all roundtables, we enlisted the help of some special guests to revisit this interesting transitional year that saw the rise of the second generation of grunge bands like Bush and Silverchair, the continued success of 1994's pop-punk breakthroughs by Green Day and The Offspring, and the juggernaut that was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. But that doesn't tell the entire tale, so former A&R executive and audio tech writer James Barber and music writer Kevin Alexander join us to talk about all the hits, the near misses, and the weirdness that was 1995. Lastly, our third guest, S.W. Lauden aka Steve Coulter was unable to attend due to the tragic loss of his and his family's home in the Eaton, CA. fires. If you are able, please consider donating to the Go Fund Me set-up by Steve's friends. As can often happen to records made by virtual unknowns that end up selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Alanis Morissette's uncensored diary of an album 'Jagged Little Pill' is perceived by many with a degree of snark and cynicism. Our guest this week, singer/songwriter Lori Garrote, is not one of these people. Raw, unvarnished and intensely personal, JLP became much more than just another record for her and millions of other women. You oughta know... Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
We've got another installment of Big Fat Five: a segment where I talk to drummers about the stories and records that shaped their sound. Today's guest is Lucy Ritter, a New York/New Jersey native who picked up the drums at just 9 years old and was already landing professional gigs by 14. After three years at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, she made the bold decision to leave and join her first major tour: the Broadway musical An Officer and a Gentleman. That gig opened doors, eventually leading to her being offered the drum chair for the Grammy Award-winning musical Jagged Little Pill. These days, Lucy has stepped away from the Broadway scene and taken on an exciting new role as the drummer for one of today's fastest-rising pop acts, Chappell Roan. We dig into how she landed that gig and explore the five records that have profoundly influenced her drumming style. This episode has been a long time coming, so let's dive in. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the incredibly talented Lucy Ritter... cheers!
