While there isn't any racial data published yet for 2026 protests, many reports from 2025 protests like Hands Off and No Kings described crowds that were mostly white and middle-aged..So, here on the show, we've launched a mini-series to ask: If some Black people aren't out in these streets, what are we doing instead? The situation in Cuba is dire as the Trump administration ramps up its campaign to destabilize the country and destroy its revolution. The island has not been able to import a single drop of oil all year, according to President Miguel Díaz-Canel. Tanker ships headed to Cuba from Venezuela were intercepted and seized by the U.S. military, which has been significantly building up its naval presence in the region with a blockade of both countries.A January executive order targets the countries that supply Cuba with the majority of its oil - including Russia, Mexico and Venezuela - with significant tariffs. This would be an expansion of the sanctions regime that has tried and failed to cut off the island from the rest of the world for decades.Without the ability to receive oil for energy, Cuban infrastructure faces a massive crisis. It produces 40% of the energy it needs and imports the rest. Without the ability to import oil, services as basic as hospitals and even water sanitation could be threatened. These moves by the U.S. are certainly part of the so-called Donroe Doctrine of Donald Trump, but are also an extension of over 60 years of attempted regime change against the socialist nation that's been able to provide much for its people and the world while struggling against imperialism just 90 miles off the coast of Florida.Sign the Call to Conscience open letter at LetCubaLive.infoGet your ticket for our webinar Cuba & Venezuela in Crisis on February 24th at CovertActionMagazine.com Support the show

They talk through leadership growth, hiring, delegation, and how to maintain vision while scaling, with direct parallels to church leadership. Key Topics & Timestamps Vision as the Foundation (00:00–05:32) Why clear vision needs to come before leadership development Churchfront's mission: "Equip church leaders in spaces with innovative solutions for thriving ministry." The importance of a mission statement, vision statement, and core values A two-day workshop at Ramsey to clarify and communicate vision Natural progression from YouTube creator to leading a 10-person team Key Quote: "If there is no clear vision of where you're trying to bring that organization, then everything else that we're about to talk about with leadership development and scaling an organization is kind of irrelevant because nobody knows where you're going." The Transition from Hands-On to Hands-Off (03:23–07:54) How Jake went from knowing everything to empowering team decision-making Building systems so problems get solved without senior leader involvement Decision-making frameworks around mission, vision, values, and finances When leaders should stay involved vs. when to delegate Team members now have authority and clarity to address issues independently High-risk or costly decisions still require senior leader involvement Key Quote: "It's so cool that my brain, even though I can keep up with a lot of things, I can no longer keep up with all of the cool things that are happening in the business and probably some of the headaches." Hiring A-Players (07:54–13:04) Essential hiring criteria: Mission alignment — genuinely excited about equipping church leaders Self-leadership — evidence of personal discipline (health, appearance, habits) Character references — take time to call references and vet thoroughly Working Genius Assessment — using Patrick Lencioni's framework to build balanced teams Team vetting — multiple team members interview candidates Churchfront Focus: Churchfront only works with churches (not corporate AV, DJ setups, or other venues). Candidates need to genuinely care about the local church. Working Genius Details: $25 assessment (WIDGET acronym) Identifies whether someone leans toward Wonder/Invention vs. Tenacity/Galvanizing traits Helps place people into roles that fit their strengths Recommended for church staff to understand their "genius zones" Key Quote: "If you can't lead yourself, you can't lead others very well." The Challenge of Letting Go (13:37–16:56) Why control is tempting but unsustainable for growth Long-term vision motivates delegation Media/marketing was Jake's original specialty and the hardest area for him to delegate to Matt Over time, Matt learned Jake's standards and expectations Hiring people who are better than you in specific areas Real Examples: Chris installs, rigs, mounts, and runs cable better than Jake Spencer models and drafts 3D spaces faster in Vectorworks James creates better schematics Senior Leader Principle: Leaders should understand all departments without controlling them. Spend a few hours learning the basics so you can make informed decisions about major investments. Church Application: Senior pastors should take Churchfront courses (a couple half-days) to be more informed than most lead pastors when making major AV decisions. Key Quote: "I'm motivated by the long-term vision of where this is going and how big the organization has to go that I'm just like, 'Yeah, I don't need to control everything. I don't want that life where I feel like I have to because I'm just going to be miserable about that.'" Present Leadership Without Micromanaging (17:46–19:40) Weekly team meetings where everyone shares what they're working on Asking: "What did you do last week?" and "What are you working on this week?" (3–10 minutes) Five minutes with each team member can make a huge impact Being present builds trust across the org chart Service businesses succeed based on team health and performance Jake shifted from solo productivity to supporting team members Key Quote: "That five minutes of interaction with one of your team members a week, no matter where they're at in the org chart, goes a long way because they're like, 'Oh wow, our senior leader knows me. I can trust him.'" High-Leverage Activities (19:50–23:16) Definition of leverage: low input, high output—like a tool that multiplies your strength. What Jake focuses on now: Pre-design client conversations — 2–3 hours per project that sets the trajectory for large-budget projects (using Wonder/Invention/Visionary strengths) Media creation — 30 minutes to a few hours can reach thousands (what built Churchfront over 8–10 years) Leader development — multiplication only happens as the team grows from 10+ toward 20–30 For church leaders: Sunday preaching — communication at scale (in-person and online) Developing other leaders — especially in areas where you're less gifted Key Quote: "What can I put lower input into and gives me high output? That's what a lever or a tool is." Leadership Evolution (23:23–25:23) John Maxwell's Five Levels of Leadership (applied): Position — title alone (doesn't get you much) Permission — relationships; people give you permission to lead Productivity — "Follow me because I produce results" (how Churchfront started) Leader development — "Follow me because I'll equip you to lead others" (current focus) Multiplication — creating leaders who create leaders Jake's journey: 2016: solo entrepreneur and highly productive individual Read leadership books and understood the growth track Started with productivity to get things off the ground With 10 people (and aiming for 20–30), he must focus on leader development to reach multiplication Key Insight: Leadership maturity means realizing it's more people-focused than anything else. Advice to 2016 Jake (25:44–28:06) What Jake would tell his younger self: "Buy more Bitcoin" (half-joking) With what he knows now, he could do in 2–3 years what took 10 But he wouldn't rush it—focus on the journey Be a man of good character Follow God Keep sustainable work-life balance Care for spouse and kids Don't rush—God multiplies right inputs into massive outputs Seek wise counsel on business strategy and online marketing Show up and do the work every day For young 20-somethings Jake mentors: Focus on self-leadership and the basics Better strategies exist—learn from wise voices Put in consistent daily work People don't see the late-night edits and behind-the-scenes grind Key Quote: "A lot of people see Churchfront and they're like, 'Wow, it's like 300,000 subscribers. It's a decent sized little business growing a lot.' It's like, yeah, that's after eight to 10 years of just showing up and doing it every single day." Main Themes Don't Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater As church culture shifts away from overly corporate/produced approaches back toward authenticity, it's still worth keeping the leadership lessons that help organizations run well—especially because leadership often isn't taught deeply in Bible school contexts. Parallels Between Business and Church Leadership Churchfront is a Christian business that prays before meetings and focuses on serving the local church. The leadership principles Jake uses translate directly to church staff leadership, especially for teams of 5–15. The Secret Sauce In service businesses (and churches), the team and people are the product. That's why leader development and team health matter so much. Natural Progression Growth happens in stages. Jake went from being intimidated by the idea of 10 staff members to progressing through each hire and stage—each step building confidence for the next. Practical Takeaways for Church Leaders Clarify your vision first—mission, vision, and core values you return to weekly Hire A-players only—take time, use assessments, and get team input Build decision-making systems so your team can solve problems without you Stay present without micromanaging—even five minutes per person per week helps Focus on high-leverage activities—preaching, leader development, strategic decisions Understand all departments without needing to control them Invest in education—leaders should understand the basics of major spending areas Progress through leadership levels—from productivity to multiplication Prioritize character and self-leadership—in yourself and the people you hire Think long-term—consistent daily effort over 8–10 years creates remarkable results

Today, Lara sits down with Dr. Marissa Nivison, a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary in the Determinants of Child Development Lab, to unpack one of the biggest questions parents carry (often silently): “Am I doing enough to build a strong bond with my child—and will it matter later?”Marissa completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Minnesota, where her research examined how early caregiving experiences and parent–child relationships shape emotional wellbeing and attachment across the lifespan. Today, her work continues to explore the “legacy” of early experiences—and what helps relationships stay resilient over time.In today's episode, Marissa breaks down what attachment really is (and what it isn't), why it matters for your child's future relationships, and how to spot common attachment myths that leave parents feeling anxious or “not good enough.” We talk about how our own childhood experiences can quietly influence the way we parent, and how to find that sweet spot between being too hands-off and too controlling—especially when you're trying to raise a confident, capable kid without pushing too hard. Most importantly, Marissa brings hope: even if the early years weren't “ideal,” kids can still form strong, healthy relationships later in life—and parents can strengthen connection at any stage with the right moves. If you've ever wondered whether your relationship with your child today could shape their confidence, emotions, and relationships tomorrow, this episode will leave you feeling informed, reassured, and equipped with practical ways to deepen the bond you're building.Meet our guestDr. Marissa Nivison is a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary's Determinants of Child Development Lab. “On 16-18th of December 2025 tens of thousands of Lithuanians gathered by the Parliament in protest against plans to politicise the public broadcaster, LRT. Over 143,000 people also signed a petition, making it the most popular online petition to date. The list of those calling on the lawmakers to step back included national and international media watchdogs and NGOs, the European Broadcasting Union, the European Council, the Lithuanian parliament's own legal department, and more. A separate protest campaign – which includes on-air statements – is self-organised by LRT staff. Civil society and some observers see these developments similar to those as in countries like Hungary and Slovakia, where pro-Russian course began with attacks against the culture sector. As a child, I watched on TV similar protests as our newly independent Lithuanian public broadcaster was taken over by soviet troops on January 13th 1991. I could never imagine that I myself would have to protest in the same square, defending the broadcaster I work for, this time from an attempted take over by our own politicians. I went there all three nights in a row and recorded thousands of people chanting “Hands off free speech”, singing our national anthem and independence-period songs about freedom. It was dark and cold with temperatures around 0 C, but the fires were burning well into the night and we felt united and hopeful.” For more, see explainers by LRT English:www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/…rt-what-s-happeningwww.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/…crosshairs-what-nowwww.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/…at-you-need-to-know

This show is made possible by you! Description: If you care about resisting autocracy and building democracy, the U.S. has much to learn from Hungary. While Donald Trump rails against Europe, he and Hungary's strongman leader, Viktor Orbán, have praised each other for years. Anti-democratic, anti-immigrant, anti-woman, anti-queer — Orbán and Trump came to power on parallel tracks with similar values. In their first interview together, Ezra Levin, the co-founder of Indivisible (the group behind No Kings!) and László Upor, a leader in one of Hungary's most creative and visible resistance efforts, share their experiences of resisting authoritarianism. Upor is former Vice Rector and Acting Rector of the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest — the one university that fought back when the Orbán administration began taking control of Hungary's universities. Levin is the co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible, the grassroots movement behind such protests as the historic Hands Off and No Kings rallies. From the principles of their organizing to frog suits and caution tape, today's episode is a masterclass in creative resistance. Plus a commentary from Laura.“Our enemy in this isn't Trump, it's not the Republicans. It's not the broader regime. Our enemy is this sense of cynicism or fatalism or nihilism . . . I do think a core principle in our communication philosophy is convincing people, you have power, you just gotta use it. The best way to use it is in concert with a lot of other people in your community.” - Ezra Levin“You have to laugh at them, not be afraid of them . . . They don't understand mirth. Fighting Fascism from Hungary to No Kings: Ezra Levin & László Upor on Trump & Orbán [Full Uncut Conversation]

Synopsis:  If you're worried about authoritarianism, this episode reminds you that people-powered resistance still wins. Indivisible's Ezra Levin and Hungarian organizer László Upor share creative, community-driven tactics — from joyful protests to bold campus actions — that pushed back against autocratic agendas. Their message: you have more power than you think.Make a tax deductible YEAR END DONATION and become a member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate. They don't understand the derision. They think they are invincible. And when we don't give in, they don't understand what's going on.” - László UpperGuests:• Ezra Levin: Co-Founder & Co-Executive Director, Indivisible• László Upor: Former Vice Rector & Acting Rector, University of Theatre and Film Arts (SzFE), Budapest, Hungary Watch the episode released on YouTube; PBS World Channel December 14th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). From “practice makes perfect” to practice with purpose, Myra connects classic motor-learning models to the OPTIMAL theory (expectancies, autonomy, external focus), and shows why you must address the psychosocial to change the psychomotor. We get concrete about designing sticky learning experiences for DPT students, residents, and fellows; building safe, high-expectation lab cultures; and using feedback, simulations, and competency-based education to translate knowledge to performance. Myra also shares her path from MTI fellowship and WashU's Movement System Impairments work to leading curriculum development for a new DPT program and co-investigating a $1.6M grant bringing PT simulation into high schools. You'll learnWhy clear expectations + psychological safety accelerates skill acquisitionHow to scaffold from competence → refinement → mastery across DPT, residency, and fellowshipPractical ways to make learning “stick” for a class of 100 (and a class of 10)Using low-stakes, frequent formative assessment to steer teaching in real timeDesigning integrated, case-based curricula (and avoiding silo traps)What competency-based education and entrustable professional activities (EPAs) look like in PTMovement as the organizing principle: applying Movement System Impairments to guide exam & interventionWhy educators must adapt to the learner in front of them, not the one they used to be

They discuss historic mass protests like “Hands Off” and “No King's Day,” which saw millions gather across thousands of towns, and explore the effectiveness of protest and advocacy when paired with strategy. Leah introduces Indivisible's ambitious 1 Million Rising initiative to train people in nonviolent resistance and organizing, highlighting the urgency of preparing for authoritarian tactics such as voter intimidation and election subversion. They also cover the stakes of upcoming elections, threats to voting rights, and the need for a unifying narrative that inspires hope and authentic engagement with voters. The conversation emphasizes the power of digital organizing, including Indivisible's new “Truth and Share” tool, while underscoring that sustained, community-based action is essential to resisting authoritarianism and securing the future of democracy. John Heath joins Justin as they get any final thoughts we've had off their chests after having sat with Peter Guralnick's "The Colonel & The King" a bit longer, watching other fans' reactions start to stream in over the last month or so. Consider this a follow-up to both the TCBCast and EAP Society reviews, as well as John's excellent Atomic Wax breakdown (if you hadn't seen it - here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdxN0xeTT1o) The guys also take a look at a number of things Peter has stated in public interviews surrounding the book's release and whether they stack up with what he writes in the book or go further. For Song of the Week, John's got HIS mojo working as he walks us through the deep Memphis lore around "Got My Mojo Working" - the 1970 warm-up jam on an old blues number (perhaps most famously known from Muddy Waters but previously done by Ann Cole) which Elvis turned into a medley with Priscilla Bowman & Jay McShann's R&B hit "Hands Off." Elvis's version surfaced with added overdubs on the Love Letters from Elvis album in '71 and the unedited version on "From Elvis in Nashville" remains a rocking treat. Justin's Song of the Week is the underrated "Anyone (Could Fall in Love With You), written for inclusion in "Kissin' Cousins" but removed from the production - yet still left on the soundtrack album. However, its songwriters' most famous non-Elvis hit from the 1940s - which Elvis almost certainly knew - might inadvertently give us a small insight into Elvis's gentle, one might say even "Spot-y," vocal approach.
