    04 - a Journey Through The Rarely Seen a Residency with 2501

In this episode we welcome 2501 and take a deep dive into how the Coronavirus pandemic shifted a residency we had planned for him here in Detroit for April and May of 2020. This residency was to explore how populations move and landscape change and using Detroit as a base to evaluate his past travels and exploration. It was March 4th that I received a text message saying that he was going into the mountains of Peru for 1 month/ before heading to Detroit. Needles to say - when 2501 re-emerged on April 5th the world was a much different place and we had to suspend the residency. As he arrived back home in Milan, Italy one of the early hot spots of Covid-19 infections he started to explore concepts of isolation while in quarantine and then exploring his home town now with much fewer people on the streets, it was during this time that we talked weekly and determined to host the residency online. With the collection entitled JOURNEY THROUGH THE RARELY SEEN he was able to show his experiences through Instagram stories while exploring his personal relationship with the pandemic and the art he was creating in quarantine. For episode 3 of the 1xRUN Podcast, I sat down with Humberto Hernandez, AKA Andres, DJ Dez, a Drummer from Detroit or Dez Andres. Since arriving in this city as a teenager he has become a household name. His masterful turntable skills, hypnotic productions, and undeniable conga abilities place him comfortably at the nexus of Detroit's Hip Hop, House Music, and Jazz scenes. You may know him from his conga work on Eyrkah Badu's “Didn't C-ha Know”, produced by J Dilla, or his collaborations with Moodymann, or maybe his highly sought after house releases under the name Andrés on his La Vida imprint. He has been our go-to DJ for all events that 1xRun has thrown and he's also the creator this shows theme song. I sat down with Dez in his home on the Westside of Detroit for this interview.

In today's episode, we visit the studio of Pat Perry, a contemporary artist and muralist whose work takes a darker look at the American experience. We caught up with him shortly before his solo exhibition at Murikami's Hidari Zingaro Gallery in Tokyo, Japan to talk about what it means to be a collector, and how Pat's home brings unexpected reminders of Detroit's troubled past. We also speak to curator Greg Cummins, who is working with us on an ongoing print series for Black History Month.
