Ten years ago, on October 26, 2015, something special began in Japan. While working at the University of Tokyo, I launched the first episode of the FreshEd podcast, marking the start of what would become a cornerstone of conversations in comparative and international education. Over the past decade, FreshEd has grown into a global platform – far larger than I ever imaged -- connecting listeners interested in education, equity, and social change. We've made over 400 episodes in that time. We've counted 200 universities that use our content and we have listeners, like you, in over 180 countries. To celebrate our anniversary, we held a live event at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan as part of the 2025 International Education Development Forum. I've like to thank Dr. Jing Liu for co-organizing this event. Joining me on stage were Professors Iveta Silova and Yuto Kitamura, who are both board members of FreshEd. In our conversation, we take you behind the scenes of FreshEd's development and reflect on what the podcast means for the wider field specifically and higher education generally. On a personal note, Iveta and Yuto are both mentors who have shaped my own career as an academic. So today we'll air the conversation we had in Tohoku on October 18. I hope you enjoy the show and here's to the second decade of FreshEd. https://freshedpodcast.com/10years/ -- Get in touch! Twitter: @FreshEdpodcast Facebook: FreshEd Email: info@freshedpodcast.com

Set in post Civil War America, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, John the Hangman Ruth, a notorious bounty hunter and his fugitive, Daisy Domergue, race towards the town of Red Rock where justices awaits Daisy at the end of a hangman's rope. Along the road they encounter two strangers, Major Marquis Warren, a black former Union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter and Chris Mannix, a southern renegade who claims to be the new sheriff of Red Rock. A raging blizzard forces the quartet to seek refuge at Minnie's Haberdashery where they encounter four additional unknown faces, Bob, a Mexican man who claims to be taking care of Minnie's while the proprietor is visiting her mother, Oswaldo Mobray, Red Rock's Hangman, Joe Gage, a cow puncher head home for Christmas and Confederate General Sanford Smithers. As the storm overtakes the mountain, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all. After last week's episode on Apollo 13 we decided to double up on space mission movies that don't go as planned, and break down the 2015 Ridley Scott film, The Martian. This is one of those movies that we've seen many times over the last 10 years, it is very rewatchable and it was very enjoyable spending some time chatting about it. Enjoy!

We're rereleasing Bald Move's coverage of The Martian (2015) in honor of the film's 10th anniversary! Check out the Matt Damon poster photos here! Jim and A.Ron saw Ridley Scott's "The Martian" last night, starring Matt Damon, and have a lot to say about it. Note, the first part of the podcast is spoiler free, but then when we say we're about to spoil things, that's your cue to get out while the getting is good. Along the way, we talk about the trailers we saw for The Revenant, The Big Short, Joy, and Concussion. If you are still hungry for more Martian goodness, might I recommend reading Andy Weir's original book (The Martian) the film is based on? Then, I'd proceed to reading Robert Zubrin's A Case For Mars, upon which most of the science of the book and film are based upon. And if that's not enough, check out the Red/Green/Blue Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. Hey there! In this special 10th anniversary episode, I take you behind the scenes for a candid look back at the past year in Membership Academy.I reflect on our biggest wins, tough decisions, reasons for change, and the evolution of our offerings as we hit a major milestone—ten years of helping membership site owners grow and thrive.Plus, I dive into the launch of some exciting new features, share the realities of juggling conferences with running an Academy, and reveal what's coming next. This is a raw, honest year-in-review that pulls back the curtain on both our successes and the obstacles we've overcome. In this episode:What were the major highlights, challenges, and changes within Membership Academy over the past year? Why did I decide to make the Membership Roadmap course completely free, and what does this mean for the future of the Academy? How did we bring back popular features like live masterclasses and member-only podcasts, and what impact have they had on our community? What's on the horizon for Membership Academy and the wider membership community in the next decade?Key Quotes & Takeaways:"A lot of people when they say that they're going to do this, what they really mean is they're going to show off how fantastically well they're doing and then sell you the secret formula to emulating their success. But that's not really what I'm about. I'm more about showing you the realities, ugly sides and all.""The challenge of somebody who is five years in is different from someone who's five months in. The scope of what membership owners need support with and need help with once they've launched is much broader and much wider.""We didn't just want to release the version of the Roadmap that we had, we've re recorded the entire thing for 2025. So it's, it's all fresh, it's all bang up to date with the latest strategies. It incorporates, you know, the various advantages and challenges that AI is brought into the mix. And so it's the most up to date, cutting edge, practical, tactical, useful and all the other superlatives. The complete course for launching a new membership. And it's completely free."Thank You For ListeningWe really appreciate you choosing to listen to us and for supporting the podcast. Season 18, Episode 26: It is true: The Final Word has turned 10. Technically our first episode was released on July 23, 2015, but July 23 this year was in the middle of a rather busy Test match and Test series, so we thought we'd wait for a quieter moment. It's a good chance to sit and take stock of what has happened, as a quiet side project done for the fun of it has become such a big part of our lives. Adam and Geoff catch up for a look back, before we dust off our rarest archival find: the pilot episode that we recorded a couple of weeks before that first episode was published, as proof of concept, when our old friends and colleagues Vithushan Ehantharajah and Will Macpherson were young friends and colleagues, and we all gathered for a preview chat before the 2015 Ashes. This was never published, beyond a handful of people hearing it on Soundcloud, but it's been remastered and is finally ready for its close-up. It's funny to listen back all that way.; time travel does exist. Thanks for coming along with us on whatever parts of that trip you've joined.
