We are joined by Cristopher Moore, a professor at the Santa Fe Institute with a diverse background in physics, computer science, and machine learning. The conversation begins with Cristopher, who calls himself a "frog" explaining that he prefers to dive deep into specific, concrete problems rather than taking a high-level "bird's-eye view". They explore why current AI models, like transformers, are so surprisingly effective. Cristopher argues it's because the real world isn't random; it's full of rich structures, patterns, and hierarchies that these models can learn to exploit, even if we don't fully understand how.**SPONSORS**Take the Prolific human data survey - https://www.prolific.com/humandatasurvey?utm_source=mlst and be the first to see the results and benchmark their practices against the wider community!---cyber•Fund https://cyber.fund/?utm_source=mlst is a founder-led investment firm accelerating the cybernetic economy.Oct SF conference - https://dagihouse.com/?utm_source=mlst - Joscha Bach keynoting(!) + OAI, Anthropic, NVDA,++Hiring a SF VC Principal: https://talent.cyber.fund/companies/cyber-fund-2/jobs/57674170-ai-investment-principal#content?utm_source=mlstSubmit investment deck: https://cyber.fund/contact?utm_source=mlst***Cristopher Moore:https://sites.santafe.edu/~moore/TOC:00:00:00 - Introduction00:02:05 - Meet Christopher Moore: A Frog in the World of Science00:05:14 - The Limits of Transformers and Real-World Data00:11:19 - Intelligence as Creative Problem-Solving00:23:30 - Grounding, Meaning, and Shared Reality00:31:09 - The Nature of Creativity and Aesthetics00:44:31 - Computational Irreducibility and Universality00:53:06 - Turing Completeness, Recursion, and Intelligence01:11:26 - The Universe Through a Computational Lens01:26:45 - Algorithmic Justice and the Need for TransparencyTRANSCRIPT: https://app.rescript.info/public/share/VRe2uQSvKZOm0oIBoDsrNwt46OMCqRnShVnUF3qyoFkFilmed at DISI (Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute)https://disi.org/REFS:The Nature of computation [Chris Moore]https://nature-of-computation.org/ Birds and Frogs [Freeman Dyson]https://www.ams.org/notices/200902/rtx090200212p.pdf Replica Theory [Parisi et al]https://arxiv.org/pdf/1409.2722 Janossy pooling [Fabian Fuchs]https://fabianfuchsml.github.io/equilibriumaggregation/ Cracking the cryptic [YT channel]https://www.youtube.com/c/CrackingTheCrypticSudoko Bench [Sakana]https://sakana.ai/sudoku-bench/Fractured entangled representations “phylogenetic locking in comment” [Kumar/Stanley]https://arxiv.org/pdf/2505.11581 (see our shows on this)The War Against Cliché: [Martin Amis]https://www.amazon.com/War-Against-Cliche-Reviews-1971-2000/dp/0375727167Rule 110 (CA)https://mathworld.wolfram.com/Rule150.htmlUniversality in Elementary Cellular Automata [Matt Cooke]https://wpmedia.wolfram.com/sites/13/2018/02/15-1-1.pdf Small Semi-Weakly Universal Turing Machines [Damien Woods] https://tilde.ini.uzh.ch/users/tneary/public_html/WoodsNeary-FI09.pdf COMPUTING MACHINERY AND INTELLIGENCE [Turing, 1950]https://courses.cs.umbc.edu/471/papers/turing.pdf Comment on Space Time as a causal set [Moore, 88]https://sites.santafe.edu/~moore/comment.pdf Recursion Theory on the Reals and Continuous-time Computation [Moore, 96]

ATTENDEESPremRock, Curly Castro, Raphy, Ohbliv, Steel Tipped Dove, Keith Rollins, and Daniel Olney….and a bit of SunmundiAGENDANew BusinessDiscuss the conception and execution of Triple Steel Beam. Discuss Lincoln Continental Breakfast, Saisir Le Feu, and Armature in detail. NOTESThree albums, 33 songs total. Prolific and at the same time lean and mean. Different flavors, all within that 25-30 minute range. The only thing comparable to the excellence and execution of this strategy is Roc Marciano's 2018.  Nobody Planning To Leave was a beloved success and new level of cohesion for the group. When people took shots at the record it was only to note that the album recalled Def Jux flavors and a lot of ears still aren't tapped in. Triple Steel Beam leaves those concerns behind. Very different sonics, very different outcomes, and three projects that need one another like family. This is not the Jux playbook. The other thing that Triple Steel Beam builds on is the fantasy albums all of the fans dream up. Since each ShrapKnel album is one producer from this otherground space, fans were always spitballing the possibilities (I am super guilty of this) and this is our dream on overload. No matter how much we as fans wish albums into fruition ShrapKnel and beyond our powers in the realm of beat picking and always outpace our expectations. Triple Steel Beam is clear evidence of that.   SHRAPKNEL LESSONSWhen I talk to other up and coming rappers about Curly Castro the lesson I want them to take from his work is that you should establish patterns but find interesting ways to break them. Keep the audience from sinking into deep comfort. From his writing, tone, and delivery Castro can steal a song in less than a full verse. Castro is one of the best in the world at creating impact. On the PremRock side, his solo work thoughts sprawl and expand from literary, economic, to sports references. Everyone who loves Prem loves this about his work, but we adore that he's never more concise and hard hitting than on ShrapKnel songs. It gives him an opportunity to grow in a different world without losing the progress he's making in how work. Creating multiple lanes for your work is great but putting your whole heart into each one moves you into a range of expertise few exist in.

Creative Blocks: Unlocking Productivity

IntroductionI discovered another AI app that you can use to create slide show presentations (and videos like the one above). The app, Microsoft Copilot, allows you to create slide shows using PowerPoint. Both Copilot and PowerPoint are part of a Microsoft 365 subscription ($99 per year, personal edition).I started with three lines of information, as shown below. I entered these lines into the Create with Copilot option that comes up when you start up PowerPoint. Within a few minutes, Copilot and PowerPoint generated a sixteen-slide presentation that became the basis for the above video.Writer's Block: In Case of an Emergency, Break the GlassThere really is no such thing as writer's block or any other block to getting things done. Blocks only exist if you let them. If you move on, they melt away.As the blue collar comedians, say, “Get ‘er done!” Move on!The text for the video is showcased below. Note how Copilot took three lines and made sixteen slides with the following extensive content.Microsoft Copilot and PowerPointToday I'm showcasing another presentation program you can use, Microsoft PowerPoint combined with Copilot, to create another version of my writer's block information. So we're going to talk about understanding the concept of writer's block, debunking the myth, the reality of writer's block, practical strategies to overcome perceived blocks, and cultivating long-term productivity and creativity.Writer's block is commonly defined as an inability to generate new ideas or work, causing creative paralysis. These beliefs influence how writers view their creative struggles and shape their response to overcoming challenges. The creative blocks such as this are often portrayed in literature, where creative blocks are often depicted as a mysterious curse impacting writers, especially novelists, symbolizing an insurmountable barrier to creativity.Film and media portray creative blocks as unavoidable challenges that dramatically affect artists and writers' work.Anxiety can cause mental blocks by creating fear and stress that hinder creative thinking and writing flow.Perfectionism leads to unrealistic standards that prevent progress and increase fear of failure in writing tasks. Also, unrealistic expectations create pressure that can block creativity and cause frustration during the writing process.Writer's block is basically a myth. Many experts believe blocks are not a real condition but misconceptions about creativity. Creative pauses are often temporary challenges, not permanent stoppages in writing or creative ability. Also, lack of motivation can cause writing delays mistaken for writer's block.Prolific writers maintain consistent work habits, regardless of obstacles, highlighting consistency over inspiration.Discipline is crucial in overcoming challenges and driving steady creative output among successful creators.Persistence outweighs mysterious creative blocks, enabling writers to produce work consistent with their story.Viewing creative struggles as normal helps writers maintain motivation and reduces frustration during the process.Believing challenges are solvable fosters resilience and encourages persistent effort towards progress.A positive mindset helps sustain continuous progress despite encountering creative blocks.Practical strategies to overcome perceived blocks.Embrace imperfection. By accepting imperfection allows progress by reducing the pressure of perfectionism in creative work.Avoid overthinking. Moving on without over analyzing every detail prevents stagnation and fosters creativity.Set goals. Some of the techniques for maintaining momentum is to set goals.Break tasks into small goals to sustain momentum and make progress manageable and rewarding.Use timed writing sessions to reduce pressure and encourage focused, consistent work intervals.Employ free writing techniques that promote creativity and flow by removing constraints and allowing spontaneous ideas to emerge.Use humor. Humor eases stress and makes creative work more enjoyable, helping to overcome mental blocks.Simplify tasks, reducing overwhelm and making creative work easier and more approachable.Cultivate long-term productivity and creativity.Build resilient writing habits, first by establishing consistent writing routines to help you maintain discipline and overcome creative challenges effectively.Develop writing habits that anchor productivity by creating dependable pathways to sustain creativity and output.Embrace imperfection and continuous progress. Recognize that first drafts are not perfect and that helps reduce pressure and fosters creativity. Be ready to do ongoing revisions to help refine your ideas and improve the quality of work over time.Embrace imperfection enables sustained effort and growth in creative projects.Learn the lessons from blue-collar comedians. Get her done. Blue-collar comedians embody a straightforward practical mindset focused on action rather than excessive planning. The key lesson is to begin tasks promptly to overcome procrastination and build momentum.ConclusionEmphasize completion without overthinking to ensure productivity and success in any endeavor.Recognize that writer's blocks is often a mental barrier rather than an actual inability to write.Dispel common misconceptions about writer's block to foster a healthier writing mindset. And then implement actionable techniques—practical strategies to unlock your productivity and sustain creativity in writing.Gamma Vs. Microsoft Copilot and PowerPointBoth programs produced informative slide show presentations and videos. Personally I preferred the output from Gamma because it included actual examples and stories that enlivened the presentation.Book Marketing Success is a reader-supported publication. Hello from the LIGHT ABOVE!Last week, I participated in an AI Hackathon, making a personal vow not to quit halfway through. It was an incredibly challenging week, pushing me to create a single project within a tightly constrained timeframe.Yet, everything flowed, and I emerged with another incredible product. My struggle now lies in mustering the energy to promote and share it with the world. But then I had to ask myself: Is external promotion truly the ultimate point of creation?Youre solving a problem internally for others to capture and make their own lives "easier."Is that not enough? The lie we often tell ourselves is that every problem-solving creation must be "pushed" out into the world to attract an audience. However, there's a different perspective: you can always iterate and create, returning to a project later or concluding it when it feels right for you in that moment.Today, we're busting the myth of "embrace the push" and embracing a more organic, iterative approach to sharing our creations. In the end. I created a incredible solution to a BIG problem for spiritual change makers.TODAY we'll unpack why cranking out a bunch of imperfect stuff actually gets you closer to brilliance, why your obsession with “perfect” is a productivity trap, and how to kickstart your creative engine without the usual hand-wringing paralysis.Sound like the creative freedom you've been craving? Let's dive in.Prolific Creation: Your New Best FrenemyHere's the truth bomb: Research shows that the key to high-quality work isn't agonizing over one piece until it's perfect. It's producing a lot of work. Like, a lot. Why? Because:* Breakthrough ideas often arrive by accident. The more work you pump out, the higher your chance of hitting gold. It's basically creative Tinder — swipe right on lots of ideas, and eventually, one's going to be “the one.”* Practice makes masterful. The more you do something, the sharper you get. Those “quick and dirty” drafts? They're your creative gym.* Perfection is a moving target. Chasing it nonstop just leads to burnout and frustration. Instead, treat “done” as your new BFF and polish later. This is why I developed the Magnetia SEO GLOW Guide: a practical system that gets those ideas from your brain onto the page fast and frequently, without the perfectionism roadblock.Instead of “embracing imperfection” like it's some consolation prize, this method makes deliberate speed and quantity your secret weapons. How This Changes The Game For YouHere's the kicker: producing prolifically doesn't mean your work ends up “meh.” No way. It means:* You get better each time, so your quick efforts become genuinely excellent over time.* Your creative breakthroughs, which often outshine presentation, come more often.* You have raw material to tweak and polish quickly — upping your content's impact without the paralysis of starting from scratch. So, if you're stuck in the “perfect or bust” loop, try shifting to “done, then better.”THE REAL SOLUTION: PROLIFIC CREATIONThere's actual research about what produces high-quality work, and it's not endless fiddling and overthinking ONE project. It's quantity.1) Producing frequently increases the chance that you'll have a breakthrough idea (they often happen by chance, so the more chances you take, the more likely it is)2) Producing frequently sharpens your chops. You get good at something by doing it A LOT INTRODUCING: THE MAGNETIA SEO GLOW GUIDEThe Magnetia process transforms your content creation process by:- Breaking the perfectionism cycle and bring clarity to what you wish to share with the world.- Turning your expertise into SEO-friendly language that actually converts- Giving you a repeatable system for prolific content creation by keeping YOUR VOICE - just more clarity. THE PROLIFIC ADVANTAGEBut even though "done is better than perfect" is our mantra, your end work does NOT end up being mediocre, for three reasons:1) You get better and better the more you produce, so your 'quick work' becomes quite excellent2) You have more breakthrough ideas, and the quality of an idea will often outshine its presentation3) Once you've got *something* to work with, you can refine and polish it (quickly, usually) into something that jumps up a few levels in excellenceThe Magnetia SEO GLOW Guide leverages deliberate speed and frequency to produce influential work that actually ranks and converts.Stop letting perfectionism keep your genius trapped in your head. Start creating prolifically with a system designed for real results.Magnetica is waiting for you, pop on over for a free assessment HERE!The Light Between is a reader-supported publication. Prolific river protector Gary Wockner gives us the straight scoop on the state of the Colorado River (and others), and the growth obsession that keeps southwest states and cities from responding rationally to increasingly scarce water resources.   TODAY, nearly half the world's population experiences severe water shortages at least part of the year. So far, fresh water issues in the American Southwest amount – mostly - to first world problems – like “I can't water my lawn whenever I want,” “it's hard to keep the golf course lush and green with less water,” or “How can I develop my next residential project if there's no water?” But the future could be grim, if we can't get the cities and states into a 12-step program to break the growth addiction habit. Our guest, Gary Wockner, works globally as an advocate and consultant for protection of rivers. He founded and directs: Save the Colorado Save the Poudre Colorado River chapter of CASSE He also cofounded Tell the Dam Truth, a nonprofit that supports river-protection groups by engaging with federal and state agencies to make sure that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by dams and reservoirs are counted, reported, and then considered during policy making, rulemaking, and legislation. He most recently led opposition to the Northern Integrated Supply Project. He filed a lawsuit to stop it, and recently settled the suit. He shares about the settlement in this episode. Every once in a while, you get the honor of doing a podcast with someone who you know is an important part of history. That's what I got to do today with Abe Jacob. Now, Abe is a sound designer. If you don't know what that is, well, I didn't really know either, but he's actually known as "The Godfather of Sound."He's had this remarkable life and career starting with his first gig that he did when he's right out of college at 22 years old in that 1966-1967 timeframe. This job ends up being The Beatles' last live concert. Shortly after he gets a job working with a band called The Mamas and the Papas. He tours with them and Peter, Paul and Mary, even winding up at the Capitol during a huge Vietnam protest concert. His list of accomplishments just goes on and on and on, having worked intimately with Jimi Hendrix until his death. What's so interesting is that Abe works with all of these legends, but he doesn't earn his nickname until he moves to theater. He is critically important to all the major plays of this time, including  Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin', and he does A Chorus Line and Chicago at the same time. I mean, he works with legendary choreographer Bob Fosse. He becomes great friends with legendary actress Lauren Bacall. He has had an amazing and very interesting life. You can see why I'm excited having Abe do my podcast. It's exactly what I'm looking to accomplish. To document these important voices in art and Abe is most definitely an artist. Quite frankly, I would pay to interview Abe. He was that good. So I hope you enjoy. This is the Godfather of Sound, Abe Jacob, on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 350.
