Prolific author and book reviewer FM Carsten Hansen returns to Perpetual Chess to talk chess improvement, chess publishing, and to provide a rundown of standout recent chess books. We start with a listener question about plateauing in tactics training. How do we know if we're just hitting a speed bump, or if we've reached our ceiling? From there, we dive deep into chess books, sharing recommendations with both a biographical and improvement focus. Lastly, we discuss Chess Openings for Dummies and Carsten's many other book projects. I still don't know how Carsten puts out so much chess material, but it's always fun to hear about it. Episode 134 – The Metal Maniacs Podcast w/ Jay Ingersoll & Modd This week, we sit down with one of the most unique, prolific, and genuinely unstoppable forces in underground metal: Justin Lawnchair, the mastermind behind The Biscuit Merchant — Ann Arbor's proggy, death-tinged, genre-melting metal project. With 26 full albums (each 45–55 minutes) in the works, recorded entirely by Justin, and no generative AI used at any stage, this project is a testament to pure determination, creativity, and DIY musicianship. The Biscuit Merchant is all about “melting pot metal,” a blend of death metal, thrash, prog, folk, power metal, blues, groove, and whatever else Justin feels like throwing into the cauldron. Nothing is off the table. Nothing is predictable. And that's what makes it magic. We deep dive into the vision, the process, and the absolute madness of building a 26-album alphabetical saga known as Alpha — a project planned since 2009 and still evolving with every riff, rhythm, and solo.

Are AI Benchmarks Telling The Full Story? [SPONSORED] (Andrew Gordon and Nora Petrova - Prolific)

Is a car that wins a Formula 1 race the best choice for your morning commute? Probably not. In this sponsored deep dive with Prolific, we explore why the same logic applies to Artificial Intelligence. While models are currently shattering records on technical exams, they often fail the most important test of all: **the human experience.**Why High Benchmark Scores Don't Mean Better AIJoining us are **Andrew Gordon** (Staff Researcher in Behavioral Science) and **Nora Petrova** (AI Researcher) from **Prolific**. They reveal the hidden flaws in how we currently rank AI and introduce a more rigorous, "humane" way to measure whether these models are actually helpful, safe, and relatable for real people.---Key Insights in This Episode:* *The F1 Car Analogy:* Andrew explains why a model that excels at the "Humanities Last Exam" might be a nightmare for daily use. Technical benchmarks often ignore the nuances of human communication and adaptability.* *The "Wild West" of AI Safety:* As users turn to AI for sensitive topics like mental health, Nora highlights the alarming lack of oversight and the "thin veneer" of safety training—citing recent controversial incidents like Grok-3's "Mecha Hitler."* *Fixing the "Leaderboard Illusion":* The team critiques current popular rankings like Chatbot Arena, discussing how anonymous, unstratified voting can lead to biased results and how companies can "game" the system.* *The Xbox Secret to AI Ranking:* Discover how Prolific uses *TrueSkill*—the same algorithm Microsoft developed for Xbox Live matchmaking—to create a fairer, more statistically sound leaderboard for LLMs.* *The Personality Gap:* Early data from the **Humane Leaderboard** suggests that while AI is getting smarter, it is actually performing *worse* on metrics like personality, culture, and "sycophancy" (the tendency for models to become annoying "people-pleasers").---About the HUMAINE LeaderboardMoving beyond simple "A vs. B" testing, the researchers discuss their new framework that samples participants based on *census data* (Age, Ethnicity, Political Alignment). By using a representative sample of the general public rather than just tech enthusiasts, they are building a standard that reflects the values of the real world.*Are we building models for benchmarks, or are we building them for humans? Movie Mike Deestro is revisiting 7 movie quotes that carry surprisingly deep truths about life, purpose, and perspective. He goes through each quote and the deep lessons he got from movies you wouldn’t expect from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle to Pokémon: The First Movie! In the Movie Review, Mike talks about The Running Man starring Glen Powell. It’s the remake of the 1987 movie about a man who joins a game show in which contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are pursued by "hunters" hired to kill them. Mike talks about the good and bad of Glen’s performance, why it doesn’t quite feel like an Edgar Wright movie, where it lost him but why he thinks Glen should be in the MCU and what superhero he should play. In the Trailer Park, after years of waiting, we finally got our first look at the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael." The King of Pop's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays the pop legend. Other cast members include Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones, Miles Teller as Jackson’s attorney, and Colman Domingo as his father Joe Jackson. Will this be the music biopic we’ve been waiting for and will it be the first music biopic to make $1 Billion Dollars at the box office? New Episodes Every Monday! “I'm at peace with who I am. I am extremely comfortable in my own skin, I am extremely comfortable with the consequences of my life…I'm not chasing anything or trying to stay relevant, I'm just being myself.” Steve Smith Sr. In this powerful and unfiltered episode of The Pivot Podcast, former NFL star Steve Smith Sr. sits down with Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor for a raw, emotional, and brutally honest conversation about the journey that shaped him and discovering peace from ultimate pain. Known for his relentless competitive fire and fearless attitude on the field, Steve opens up about the battles no one saw—his upbringing, the chips on his shoulder, and the emotional scars that fueled his greatness. From rising as an undersized third-round pick to becoming one of the most explosive receivers in NFL history, Steve breaks down the mentality that kept him fighting long after others would have quit. He discusses his struggles with anger, the importance of mental health, and how he learned to redefine manhood, fatherhood, and purpose beyond the game. The conversation covers accountability, discovering true self, the pressure of public life, and the consequences of actions off the field. Steve addresses the explosive social media allegations that surfaced in February 2025, when a man publicly accused him of having an affair with his wife. In a fury, personal messages and voice calls were released leading to swift and strenuous fallout. Through it all, Steve has largely remained silent in public — but he breaks that silence with the guys as he unpacks the emotional weight of the accusations, his reaction when confronted, embarrassment and how this controversy affected his family and ultimately his own marriage. From the highs of football royalty to the lows of fame and fallout, this conversation gives an inside look at a rock bottom moments to rebuilding from the ground up. Insightful, vulnerable, and at times hilarious, this episode showcases the side of Steve Smith Sr. fans rarely see. It's a conversation about growth, accountability, and the power of owning your story. Whether you're a football fan or simply someone navigating your own journey, Steve's words will hit home. Prolific, five-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author Dorie Greenspan is the queen of sweets, and she just released her 15th cookbook, Dorie’s Anytime Cakes. Famous for her beloved World Peace Cookies and many baking books, including one she wrote with Julia Child, it's not surprising that Dorie wants to start and end her last meal with dessert. What's wrong with eating dessert first, anyway? Rachel chats with Ayurvedic counselor Jodi Boone about the life-bettering benefits of starting your meal with sweets. And when Dorie told Rachel she ate the same exact lunch every single day for years, the first person we thought of was Donald Gorske. Gorske has eaten almost nothing but McDonald's Big Macs since 1972, putting his current Big Mac count at over 35,000. Rachel called the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin native on his flip phone to learn why the man eats two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun ... Every.
