Prolific documentary-maker Shirley Horrocks talks to Jesse about her latest work, a documentary on Don McGlashan. Anchor Me - The Don McGlashan Story is the first feature length documentary made about him.
Prolific river protector Gary Wockner gives us the straight scoop on the state of the Colorado River (and others), and the growth obsession that keeps southwest states and cities from responding rationally to increasingly scarce water resources. TODAY, nearly half the world's population experiences severe water shortages at least part of the year. So far, fresh water issues in the American Southwest amount – mostly - to first world problems – like “I can't water my lawn whenever I want,” “it's hard to keep the golf course lush and green with less water,” or “How can I develop my next residential project if there's no water?” But the future could be grim, if we can't get the cities and states into a 12-step program to break the growth addiction habit. Our guest, Gary Wockner, works globally as an advocate and consultant for protection of rivers. He founded and directs: Save the Colorado Save the Poudre Colorado River chapter of CASSE He also cofounded Tell the Dam Truth, a nonprofit that supports river-protection groups by engaging with federal and state agencies to make sure that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by dams and reservoirs are counted, reported, and then considered during policy making, rulemaking, and legislation. He most recently led opposition to the Northern Integrated Supply Project. He filed a lawsuit to stop it, and recently settled the suit. He shares about the settlement in this episode. Gary is also author of numerous books, including: River Warrior: Fighting to Protect the World's Rivers Comeback Wolves Pulse of the River LINKS: News stories, opinion pieces, books and more related to Gary Wockner's work: https://garywockner.com/all-garys-writing-advocacy/ Disaster Capitalism on the Colorado River - Column by Gary Wockner: https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2016/03/27/colorado-river-drought-destruction-interior-moonshot-disaster-capitalism-column/80468488/ Save the Colorado: https://savethecolorado.org/ Save the Poudre: https://www.savethepoudre.org/ Tell the Dam Truth: https://tellthedamtruth.com/ Colorado River Chapter of CASSE (Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy): https://steadystate.org/meet/chapters/ Colorado River Basin Climate and Hydrology: State of the Science: https://wwa.colorado.edu/resources/colorado-river-resources/CRBreport Colorado River States Still Have No Unified Long-Term Management Plan and ‘Are Just About Out of Time,' Experts Warn – May 31, 2025 Denver Post story: https://www.denverpost.com/2025/05/31/colorado-river-negotiations-2026-deadline/ Water Supply Uncertainty Could Slow Growth in Colorado Springs – May 2024 news story KRDO13 Colorado Springs: https://youtu.be/rvGGqZHwHdM?si=bimFT2BSWlCq_c5C Officials Fear 'Complete Doomsday Scenario' for Drought-Stricken Colorado River - The Washington Post, December 1, 2022: https://www.yahoo.com/news/officials-fear-complete-doomsday-scenario-202316932.html?guccounter=1 Give Us Feedback: Record a voice message for us to play on the podcast: 719-402-1400 Send an email to podcast at growthbusters.org The GrowthBusters theme song was written and produced by Jake Fader and sung by Carlos Jones. https://www.fadermusicandsound.com/ https://carlosjones.com/ On the GrowthBusters podcast, we come to terms with the limits to growth, explore the joy of sustainable living, and provide a recovery program from our society's growth addiction (economic/consumption and population). Prolific author Suzanne Leal has released her fifth novel titled "The Year We Escaped"
Every once in a while, you get the honor of doing a podcast with someone who you know is an important part of history. That's what I got to do today with Abe Jacob. Now, Abe is a sound designer. If you don't know what that is, well, I didn't really know either, but he's actually known as "The Godfather of Sound."He's had this remarkable life and career starting with his first gig that he did when he's right out of college at 22 years old in that 1966-1967 timeframe. This job ends up being The Beatles' last live concert. Shortly after he gets a job working with a band called The Mamas and the Papas. He tours with them and Peter, Paul and Mary, even winding up at the Capitol during a huge Vietnam protest concert. His list of accomplishments just goes on and on and on, having worked intimately with Jimi Hendrix until his death. What's so interesting is that Abe works with all of these legends, but he doesn't earn his nickname until he moves to theater. He is critically important to all the major plays of this time, including Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin', and he does A Chorus Line and Chicago at the same time. I mean, he works with legendary choreographer Bob Fosse. He becomes great friends with legendary actress Lauren Bacall. He has had an amazing and very interesting life. You can see why I'm excited having Abe do my podcast. It's exactly what I'm looking to accomplish. To document these important voices in art and Abe is most definitely an artist. Quite frankly, I would pay to interview Abe. He was that good. So I hope you enjoy. This is the Godfather of Sound, Abe Jacob, on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 350.

A prolific Tauranga shoplifter has been sentenced to two years behind bars after being convicted of nearly forty offences. Police say the investigation started with a single complaint through a retail crime data base, with no confirmed identity and no leads. But an officer was able to build-up a picture of the 45 year old woman who was pinching stuff on an almost daily basis. The conviction follows a controversial directive that set financial benchmarks for investigating petrol drive offs, retail crime and scams. It was quickly canned and since then a review been launched of cases that may have been parked up as a result of the directive. Police Commissioner Richard Chambers spoke to Lisa Owen.

It's Vidas and usually we do these conversations with Ausra but today I'm delighted to speak with a very special guest—someone whose music has brought inspiration, beauty, and calm to listeners and performers around the world.Dr. James Michael Stevens, joining us from Nashville, Tennessee, is a remarkably prolific composer, pianist, and educator. He currently serves as the Dean of the School of Music at Welch College, and his creative output is nothing short of astonishing. Prolific author and lover of “old ladies” Melinda Blau hosts an unprecedented mother/daughter conversation with “America's gerontologist” Kerry Burnight, her 96-year-old mother Betty, and Melinda's daughter Jennifer Martin, a hospice nurse. The four discuss complexities of the mother-daughter duo as both age – role shifts, stumbling blocks and challenges, the need to simultaneously stay connected and draw boundaries. The episode is dotted with clips of Betty sharing her strategies for living exuberantly into her nineties. Kerry's videos of her everyday moments and thoughts have made Betty a burgeoning Instagram star – and that's okay with her. “I'm just thrilled with the fact that she is so popular. She's my baby!”Jennifer admits that as a young mother, being the daughter of a parenting expert was “challenging…similar to Betty having a daughter who's gerontologist!” But because of her own aging, her father's recent death, and her professional role helping patients and their families face end-of-life realities, Jen has a new appreciation of Melinda's life and choices. One hopeful takeaway from this lively discussion is that it's never too late to see the other as a person, not merely “mother” or “daughter.”Show NotesKerry's website: https://drkerryburnight.com/On Instagram: @the_gerontologist Kerry's book, Joy Span, is now available for preorder online and wherever books are sold.Enjoy this poem about mothers and daughters written by a member of the Crows Feet podcast team: https://jeanfeldeisen.com/blog/Support the show

BUKOWSKI SPEAKS!!!!!Cause and Effect -For Kurt Cobain"the best often die by their own handjust to get away, and those left behindcan never quite understandwhy anybodywould ever want toget awayfromthem"Bukowski writes with no apologies from the frayed edge of society.“Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.”“For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can't readily accept the God formula, the big answers don't remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”Bukowski's response to: “Do you hate people?”“I don't hate them...I just feel better when they're not around.”“Find what you love and let it kill you.”“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”“We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.”Bluebird“Bluebird” is one of Bukowski's best-known poems and came late in his life during a time of great reflection. It deals with one of deepest-rooted human emotions: vulnerability.Bukowski typically dealt with “hyper-masculine” subject matter, but this poem suggests that, like most men, Bukowski also struggled to live up to traditional notions of masculinity.there's a bluebird in my heart thatwants to get outbut I'm too tough for him,I say, stay in there, I'm not goingto let anybody seeyou.there's a bluebird in my heart thatwants to get outbut I pour whiskey on him and inhalecigarette smokeand the whores and the bartendersand the grocery clerksnever know thathe'sin there.there's a bluebird in my heart thatwants to get outbut I'm too tough for him,I say, stay down, do you want to messme up?you want to screw up theworks?you want to blow my book sales inEurope?there's a bluebird in my heart thatwants to get outbut I'm too clever, I only let him outat night sometimeswhen everybody's asleep.I say, I know that you're there,so don't besad.then I put him back, but he's singing a littlein there, I haven't quite let himdieand we sleep together likethatwith oursecret pactand it's nice enough tomake a manweep, but I don'tweep, doyou? This was published in Bukowski's book "The Last Night of the Earth Poems" circa 1992

In the latest episode of Intellectual But Ignant, the crew is back with a special back-to-back drop! Now, not to throw anyone under the bus, but apparently our cameraman didn't convert the video properly so that's why the title is what it is—might be a little blurry. But hey, F it... we move. In this episode, Mako, Boogie, and Twin chop it up about all kinds of things—from being on the hunt to finding the plug on food stamps, to why they're done tipping for takeout orders because, let's be real, it's draining. Boogie confesses to running off on Uber Eats orders after not getting tipped properly and Mako explains why he doesn't tip uber eat orders all the time.. and thus, the domino effect continues. We also dig into the NIL deal surrounding the University of Tennessee's quarterback, and we break down the Karmelo Anthony case along with the broader division we're seeing in the country. Of course, it wouldn't be an episode without our conspiracy theory segment—you'll definitely want to tap in for that. We wrap things up with playoff predictions and a semi-breakdown of the games for Twin, who, let's just say, sometimes needs a little help keeping up. In the latest episode of Intellectual But Ignant, Mako sits down for his first solo interview with artist and painter Jon Designz. They touched on a bit of everything—from Jon's favorite movie being Heat, to growing up in a religious household and how that shaped his relationship with his mother into adulthood. He shared how his grandmother played a pivotal role in his upbringing, instilling morals and principles that still guide him today. Jon opened up about getting married young, the lessons that came with that, and the difference between raising his son at a young age versus raising his daughter later in life. We also got into his roots—being born and raised in Decatur, Georgia—and his views on co-parenting, especially how as a man, you often have to take the high road. Jon talked about building his interior design empire, how it's opened doors for him globally, and the mindset that “there's enough work for everyone to eat.” He kept it real about the temptations that come with the job—especially with women—but emphasized the importance of discipline, because temptation doesn't pay the bills. We also dove into a powerful conversation about mental health, especially in the Black community, and how therapy is often overlooked or stigmatized among Black men. This episode is packed with real talk and life gems—so kick back, relax, and don't forget to like , comment and subscribe and follow us on all social media platforms Instgram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok .
Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong examines the chilling case of Samuel Little, the most prolific serial killer in United States history. For nearly four decades, Little preyed on the society's most vulnerable, evading justice as he carried out a staggering number of murders. Despite multiple arrests, he avoided serious punishment – until a DNA match finally exposed his crimes. Candice unpacks the psychopathy and paraphilias that fueled his crimes, how he was able to kill undetected for so long, and how his confessions helped authorities close dozens of cold cases.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more!
