This episode features Nadia Ruiz, who is a hugely prolific runner, with a special fondness for the marathon. This is a love that began when she was a teenager. Running has been a source of strength, empowerment, and self-confidence, as well as healing: running has seen Nadia through good times and also through some dark moments. Up to today, when Nadia is hitting new highs in the sport, in her 40s.   In addition to her long history with the the marathon, Nadia Ruiz has raced many other distances as well, from 5ks to ultras: she runs and races on the road as well as the trails. She's also been a triathlete. And, Nadia races a lot: she's run over 160 marathons, and she was the youngest person and remains the youngest Latina to reach 100 marathons, which she did in 2013.  Nadia is also a running coach and she is an uplifting, influential presence on Instagram. She's also well known for sharing her running journey with her father, who's run with her since the beginning, and continues to run with her to this day.  Nadia has had her share of challenges. She's navigated some very dark days, and a time when alcohol use became destructive. Professor Andrew Wilson from NYU explains why many common-sense ideas in artificial intelligence might be wrong. For decades, the rule of thumb in machine learning has been to fear complexity. The thinking goes: if your model has too many parameters (is "too complex") for the amount of data you have, it will "overfit" by essentially memorizing the data instead of learning the underlying patterns. This leads to poor performance on new, unseen data. He makes a few surprising points:**Bigger Can Be Better**: massive models don't just get more flexible; they also develop a stronger "simplicity bias". So, if your model is overfitting, the solution might paradoxically be to make it even bigger.**The "Bias-Variance Trade-off" is a Misnomer**: Wilson claims you don't actually have to trade one for the other. You can have a model that is incredibly expressive and flexible while also being strongly biased toward simple solutions. He points to the "double descent" phenomenon, where performance first gets worse as models get more complex, but then surprisingly starts getting better again.**Honest Beliefs and Bayesian Thinking**: His core philosophy is that we should build models that honestly represent our beliefs about the world. We believe the world is complex, so our models should be expressive. But we also believe in Occam's razor—that the simplest explanation is often the best. The group debates whether intelligence is everywhere, even in a virus or a plant, or if it requires a certain level of complexity. Professor Friston introduces the idea of different "kinds" of things, suggesting that creatures like us, who can model themselves and think about the future, possess a unique and "strange" kind of agency that sets us apart.From intelligence, the discussion naturally flows to the even trickier concept of consciousness. Is it the same as intelligence? Professor Friston argues they are different. He explains that consciousness might emerge from deep, layered self-awareness—not just acting, but understanding that you are the one causing your actions and thinking about your place in the world.They also explore intelligence at different sizes. Is a corporation intelligent? What about the entire planet? Professor Friston suggests there might be a "Goldilocks zone" for intelligence. It doesn't seem to exist at the super-tiny atomic level or at the massive scale of planets and solar systems, but thrives in the complex middle-ground where we live.Finally, they tackle one of the most pressing topics of our time: Can we build a truly conscious AI? Professor Friston shares his doubts about whether our current computers are capable of a feat like that. Prolific and at the same time lean and mean. Different flavors, all within that 25-30 minute range. The only thing comparable to the excellence and execution of this strategy is Roc Marciano's 2018.  Nobody Planning To Leave was a beloved success and new level of cohesion for the group. When people took shots at the record it was only to note that the album recalled Def Jux flavors and a lot of ears still aren't tapped in. Triple Steel Beam leaves those concerns behind. Very different sonics, very different outcomes, and three projects that need one another like family. This is not the Jux playbook. The other thing that Triple Steel Beam builds on is the fantasy albums all of the fans dream up. Since each ShrapKnel album is one producer from this otherground space, fans were always spitballing the possibilities (I am super guilty of this) and this is our dream on overload. No matter how much we as fans wish albums into fruition ShrapKnel and beyond our powers in the realm of beat picking and always outpace our expectations. Triple Steel Beam is clear evidence of that.   SHRAPKNEL LESSONSWhen I talk to other up and coming rappers about Curly Castro the lesson I want them to take from his work is that you should establish patterns but find interesting ways to break them. Keep the audience from sinking into deep comfort. From his writing, tone, and delivery Castro can steal a song in less than a full verse. Castro is one of the best in the world at creating impact. On the PremRock side, his solo work thoughts sprawl and expand from literary, economic, to sports references. Everyone who loves Prem loves this about his work, but we adore that he's never more concise and hard hitting than on ShrapKnel songs. It gives him an opportunity to grow in a different world without losing the progress he's making in how work. Creating multiple lanes for your work is great but putting your whole heart into each one moves you into a range of expertise few exist in.

IntroductionI discovered another AI app that you can use to create slide show presentations (and videos like the one above). The app, Microsoft Copilot, allows you to create slide shows using PowerPoint. Both Copilot and PowerPoint are part of a Microsoft 365 subscription ($99 per year, personal edition).I started with three lines of information, as shown below. I entered these lines into the Create with Copilot option that comes up when you start up PowerPoint. 'Tella Enugu' is a Telugu translation of the novel 'Vellai Yaanai' originally written in Tamil by writer Jeyamohan. The novel is of historical fiction based on certain true incidents during the British Raj of Late 19th Century. In this conversation Jeyamohan talked about the back drop of the novel, the situation of Dalits in those days, How the British Raj used the caste system to exploit and rule India among other things. The Writer is highly regarded as one of the most creative and Prolific writers from India. He writes mostly in Tamil and also in Malayalam. His output includes Ten novels, ten volumes of short stories/plays, thirteen literary criticisms, five biographies of writers, six introductions to Indian and Western literature, three volumes on Hindu and Christian philosophy and numerous other translations and collections. He has also written scripts for Malayalam and Tamil movies. His writing is heavily influenced by the works of humanitarian thinkers Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
