Dr. Ben Belknap is a community Emergency Physician in NYC. He is also the co-Founder and Director of The Kingiti Fund, a non-profit working with leaders in rural Tanzania to create and maintain high-quality emergency services (among many, many other things) there.Ben managed The Kingiti Fund throughout medical school after founding it while serving in the Peace Corp. He expanded its services while completing residency. For Ben, training in emergency medicine was always a tool allowing him to better meet the needs of the Mpwapwa community rather than a personal fascination. Dr. Chase DiMarco (PhD) is a medical student (MD), author, and tech entrepreneur. He is also currently the CEO of the crowdsourcing platform FindARotation.com.Chase is a serial entrepreneur who identifies challenges and solutions to those challenges everywhere he goes. During medical school, he realized that international medical graduates (IMG) were at a significant disadvantage compared to US graduates since IMGs were generally expected to find their clinical rotations, while most US graduates have those at the ready. He also realized that the number of available rotations were shrinking with the proliferation of nurse practitioner and physician assistant programs. Available services to help match students with preceptors were inadequate, so he founded the crowdsourcing platform FindARotation.com.Chase was not a software engineer or web developer, of course. Dr. Gerardo Guerra Bonilla is a practicing family physician, hospitalist, and best-selling author.Gerardo saves EHR note templates for himself so he can more efficiently document his patient encounters. He realized early in his career that these templates save him a significant amount of time. He also realized that other physicians would similarly benefit from access to high quality note templates. He sought ways to distribute his templates to his physician colleagues. From his ambition to make documentation easier for others, Gerardo ended up with a best-selling book and a crowdsourcing web platform, Chartnote.com. Gerardo doesn't have degrees in journalism or literature. He didn't have a book deal or an agent. Further, he isn't a software engineer or web developer. He identified ways to self-publish his book and a number of ways to monetize his activities using resources easily available on the internet. Dr. Daphne Denham is a general surgeon and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) specialist.Daphne runs a HBOT research and treatment center in Fargo, ND. Welcome to our podcast! We are Andrew and Keevin, practicing physicians exploring the world of non-clinical and non-traditional physician employment. We love the passive income and the FIRE (financial independence, retire early) movements. Their proponents continue to teach us so much! However, we find that many of our colleagues enjoy the satisfaction of a hard day's work and want to continue working. Unfortunately, the medical education pipeline is geared toward clinical and/or academic practice and it offers very little information about alternative careers.
