My guest this week is Dr. Ilyse Dobrow DiMarco. She's a clinical psychologist and she has a new book called Mom Brain: Proven Strategies to Fight the Anxiety, Guilt, and Overwhelming Emotions of Motherhood—And Relax Into Your New Self. We talked about what mom brain actually is—which is very different from the pop culture ideas about it. She also shares about how to deal with the resentment that many moms feel about all the invisible work they do for the family, and how to manage the common thought processes that contribute to mothers' stress and anxiety. Ilyse does a lot to validate moms, which is especially important in a society that too often shames mothers for somehow not measuring up to unrealistic standards. Toward the end of our conversation I asked Ilyse how long mom brain lasts, and it turns out it's probably a lot longer than we might think. If you're a mother, I think you'll get a lot out of this discussion, and please share it with other moms you know.

He rejoined the Hawkeyes after spending the 2013 season with the program as a intern. DiMarco rejoined the Iowa program after playing in the NFL as an outside linebacker in 2014. He spent time with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. DiMarco earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and strength and conditioning from William Penn in and a Master of Science in exercise science, performance enhancement and injury prevention, from California University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ilyse DiMarco sees a lot of moms through her practice as a psychologist and, as a mom herself, understands how overwhelming the emotions of motherhood often are. That's why her new book, Mom Brain, focuses on offering strategies to help moms learn to take some pressure off of themselves and make small changes that result in big outcomes rather than telling moms what they're doing is wrong. Ilyse shows the power of acceptance and commitment therapy, as well as the power moms have inside themselves. Today's show is with sports performance coaches Nick DiMarco and Keir Wenham-Flatt.  Nick DiMarco is the director of sports performance at Elon University.  He is a leader in the NCAA University coaching system in the realms of high performance ideology.  As a former professional athlete (NY Jets and Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker in 2014), Nick is well versed in the intuitive aspects of what it takes to be a high achieving athlete. Keir Wenham-Flatt is a strength and conditioning coach and educator.  He has a background in American football and experience within professional rugby for nearly a decade in five different countries: the U.K., Australia, China, Japan, and Argentina. Keir is the founder of the Strength Coach Network and Rugby Strength Coach, and has been a prominent figure in coaching education.  Both coaches have been prior guests on the podcast, speaking on topics ranging from perception-reaction and training transfer, to mental resiliency. The art of preparing athletes in team sport goes far beyond strength development, and even linear speed.  Knowing which elements of physical preparation are the “lowest hanging fruit” for each athlete, and how to appropriately progress them through their careers is a trademark of an experienced and thoughtful coach.  Many athletes in college football will barely improve in speed versus their high school abilities, especially after their first year of college strength training. On the show today, Nick and Keir will get into the finer points of off-season and pre-season training for American football, and how to place players in training priority groups based on need, such as strength, speed, or body mass-composition factors.  They also speak on how to utilize auto-regulation to make the process of maintaining (or improving) performance factors as quickly as humanly possible.  Finally, topics of specific conditioning means and methods to meet the demands of the game are discussed in depth, and particularly in how collision sports differ from contact sports in this regard. Timestamps and Main Points 5:15 – Off-season and pre-season training emphasis in American football physical preparation 16:36 – Nick's different programs and “buckets” for various needs of his NCAA football athletes 22:11 – How to auto-regulate strength, power and speed markers once an athlete already has the pre-requisite levels of maximal strength for their sport 38:58 – Thoughts on the demands of long-drives and the extreme ends of game speed-endurance and its impacts on how coaches should go about a conditioning program 48:24 – Keir and Nick talking about the “Robustness Bucket” in working with athlete populations 56:10 – How Keir and Nick steer training into reactive game-speed oriented tasks as the pre-season nears “Why do they break in camp? It's not from a lack of exposure to heavy weight-training” Wenham-Flatt “Ask yourself, “What do you get most tired doing, what do you do most often, what is tied most to the outcome of the game?” that is the stuff that you need to be a master of, and robust to, in context of your position” Wenham-Flatt “With regard to the developmental stuff, where-ever possible, the answer would be auto-regulation; if you are auto-regulating every set in a target ability, you are hitting the maximum productive value of that session” Wenham-Flatt “There are anthropometric barriers to entry you must clear as you if you want to thrive in your position, and they go up, as the levels go up” Wenham-Flatt “1RM barbell strength is going to transfer to explosive movement to a point, and it's lower than people think” Wenham-Flatt “I think one of the reasons most athletes make a lot of progress early on,

OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner and host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast talks with Chase DiMarco, founder and lead educator at FreeMedEd, CEO of FindARotation, and co-author of “Read This Before Medical School.” Chase shares his experiences creating a medical resource website to help students with their education. He also discusses how and why he got into podcasting and the goal of his web app, FindARotation.      EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Chase double majored in psychology and medicine before going to a Caribbean medical school where he started FreeMedEd, an online resource provider. Initially, FreeMedEd housed YouTube videos, playlists, and quizzes for students to use to help round out their medical school education. Now, the site contains podcasts, books, and online courses.  Jason and Chase discuss options for people who might be interested in going to a Caribbean medical school. Impostor syndrome can occur when you’re creating your own online course. Double-check every bit of information you’re sharing. You don’t have to do everything yourself. You can outsource or hire freelancers via Fiverr or Upwork.  Chase hosts two podcasts and is currently working on a third show.   ‘Medical Mnemonist’ was launched to help students with their board exams. The show features medical mnemonist champions and trainers to help students increase their memory and formulate efficient study skills.  ‘Rounds to Residency’ targets medical students who need to do medical rounds. The podcast helps them navigate rotations.  Chase’s third podcast, which hasn’t been released yet, will showcase global perspectives on science, medicine, and healthcare with skilled researchers and scientists. Chase’s podcasts started as a labor of love and are now his primary tool for networking.  FindARotation is a crowdsourced clinical rotations platform currently in its beta stage. The goal of the app is to be an untapped resource for clinical instructors and students searching to book clinical sites.  When it comes to app development, do your due diligence. Apps require a great deal of research and development - for Chase, it was two years. You need to consider design, legalities and leave room for trial and error.  Listening and reading can only get you so far. Go out, make mistakes, and then learn from them.   3 KEY POINTS: In general, medical schools are self-regulated. Utilize resources available on the internet and find the right mentor to supplement class lectures. Plan out your online course first or find a template. If you want to design the webpage yourself, there are several cost-effective website builders you can use.  When working with an app developer, do your due diligence, get a separate graphic designer and keep your expectations low.   TWEETABLE QUOTES: “The more you know, the more you think you don’t know.” - Chase DiMarco “Don’t interview. In this episode we discuss the seismic shifts in our priorities that occur when we become mothers, the anxiety that can often result, and the evidence-based strategies that work best to keep us present-moment-focused. Mom Brain is composed of easily digestible sections, so even if you only have 10 minutes to read, you’ll be able to pick up at least one or two solid coping skills. When all your competitors are merging or being bought outright, what do you do? Do you stay independent or do you look to do the same as them? When they all lock into one business focus, do you do the same or do you carve your own path? Jason Bystrak and Peter DiMarco, Vice Presidents at D&H Distributing (104 year old family owned company), join me on this episode to talk about how to know what you should do for your business. They know firsthand the questions you need to ask yourself and whether you should care what your competitors are doing. The conversation also goes into how a $5 billion company operates with 36% employee ownership versus a $50 billion company. I especially loved the conversation about egos, complicating things and the bottoms-up versus top-down method of deciding your businesses next steps. If you have employees, or are thinking about adding staff for the first time, Peter's insights into hiring practices will open your eyes. Jason Bystrak is the vice president of the cloud and services business unit for D&H Distributing, and leads a team of cross-functional experts responsible for the strategy and execution of the company’s XaaS ("Everything as a Service") business, helping channel partners deliver total solutions in a subscription model. He oversees technology practice areas including cloud, professional services, security and unified communications. He is the chair of the Channel Development Advisory Council for CompTIA, previously served as chair for CompTIA’s cloud community, and has been named to ChannelPro-SMB’s list of 20/20 Visionaries, as well as CRN’s 100 People You Don’t Know But Should. He frequently offers insight into the opportunity and future of cloud at strategic industry events, including CompTIA’s ChannelCon, Channel Partners and IT Nation. Peter DiMarco joined D&H in 2015 as vice president of VAR sales, Computer Products Division (CPD). He oversees sales teams working with all value-added resellers that sell through the CPD division, including commercial, government and education solution providers as well as managed service providers. Peter manages the inside and outside sales teams, solutions and Cloud support teams focused on new market growth strategies, aimed at helping its SMB solution providers evolve towards larger mid-market sales opportunities and solutions. He is focused on driving VAR engagement efforts including the VAR Track events at D&H's trade shows, and a new K-12 Advisory Board focusing on this vertical market, in addition to driving new programs and support services. Peter previously served as an IT channel development leader at EarthLink, and has coordinated sales initiatives with partners such as Microsoft, Cisco, Dell, Lenovo, VMware, Apple, Juniper, Citrix and HP. His IT distribution experience includes a vice president of VAR sales position at Ingram Micro.
