I met with Mike on the floor of his kids' bedroom in Brooklyn. He only had 45 minutes, but in that time he totally recalibrated how I understood forgiveness. This was one of the most important and moving conversations that I was afforded during the year-long project. The photo is of Mike holding an inscribed gift from his father, a book on Adlai E. STevenson's campaign speeches. Mike was 36 at the time of our interview, and lost his father when he was 29. Fatherless by Suicide is a collaborative storytelling project by and for sons whose fathers died by suicide. This episode provides an overview of why I created the project and how I met the men who collaborated with to make it happen.
This was the first interview I conducted. I met Justin in midtown Manhattan just before he was heading back to Paris. Justin was the first person to contact me about the project and offer to be interviewed. He was 26 at the time of our interview, and lost his father when he was 17. The photo you see to the left is Justin and his dad backstage after Justin's performance in Grease. It is the last photo Justin had with his father. I'm so grateful he did and that we started the project together with this first interview. Fatherless by Suicide is a collaborative storytelling project by and for sons whose fathers died by suicide.
