Coming into the B1G Championships, Indiana's Josh Bey was seeded at 3:42.61. Through prelims, he dropped a 3:36.92 PB. Then in finals, he cut another 2 seconds to touch at 3:34.90, touching .3 ahead of Michigan's Lorne Wigginton for the win. When SwimSwam sat down with Bey to discuss his monumental drop, he revealed an interesting development that occurred this season. At the beginning of the season, the 400 IM group had been doing a lot of over-distance training. When the group sat down with their coach, Luke Ryan, and asked to incorporate more race-specific work, Ryan agreed. This seemed to be a pivotal change, as Indiana had 5 scoring swimmers in the 400 IM, notably two freshmen in the A-final.
https://teachhoops.com/ Moving players between levels—Varsity, JV, or Freshman—is one of the most politically charged aspects of coaching, yet it is essential for the long-term health of your program. The "Elevator Model" of roster management ensures that players are competing at the level that matches their current skill set and physical maturity. However, to avoid the "parent-coach friction" that often accompanies these moves, you must establish a "Fluidity Policy" during your pre-season meeting. If players and parents understand from Day One that rosters are "living documents" and that a move "down" is a developmental opportunity for more minutes, while a move "up" is a reward for consistent production, you remove the "stigma" and replace it with a "Growth Mindset." A key strategic pillar is "Developmental Priority." Often, a talented sophomore is better served playing 28 minutes at the JV level—where they are the primary ball-handler and "go-to" scorer—than playing 4 minutes of "garbage time" on Varsity. To "win" this transition, you must provide the player with a "Tactical Roadmap." Use your TeachHoops member calls to "audit" your "Swing Player" rotation. When you move a player "down," frame it as a "Leadership Assignment": "We need you to go down and anchor the JV defense so you can learn how to lead a unit." When they move "up," emphasize their "Role Clarity": "Your job on Varsity is to be our elite '3-and-D' specialist." By giving the move a specific purpose, you maintain the player's "Buy-In" and focus. Finally, you must master the "Art of the Mid-Season Evaluation." The "January Lull" is often when rosters stagnate. A great coach is always looking for the "JV Spark"—the player who has outgrown their level and is ready for the "Varsity Speed." When making these moves, utilize "Objective Data" like "Practice Points," "Defensive Deflections," and "Film Grade" to justify the decision. This removes the "perception of favoritism" and reinforces a culture of "Merit-Based Opportunity." By being the "Communicator-in-Chief" of your program's roster, you ensure that every athlete is in the "Sweet Spot" of their development, preparing your entire program to peak during the postseason. Send a textThis special podcast episode is a recording of a talk given by Dr Bruce Tocher at Hereford Welsh Club on 5th March 2026. The subject was Operation Freshman, the first glider borne raid of the Second World War, which the Vemork Norsk Hydro hydrogen electrolysis plant in Telemark, Norway. Bruce, who has studied the operation in great detail, explained the reasoning behind the raid, the selection and training of the men involved and the events of 19th November 1942 and the aftermath.Introducing the talk, museum curator Col Andy Taylor drew attention to Sapper Thomas William Faulkner, son of Charles Henry and Florence Faulkner, of Hereford, who served with 9th Field Company (Airborne) Royal Engineers and took part in the operation. His father, uncle and grandfather had all served with the Herefordshire Regiment; his grandfather being the oldest casualty of the Regiment at Gallipoli.Bruce outlined how the Halifax bombers and gliders managed to reach the Norwegian coast, but neither was able to reach their objective. The first pair suffered from navigational difficulties and severe weather, which resulted in the tow rope snapping and the first glider crash-landing, with its Halifax tug aircraft returning to base. Three airborne troops were killed and the survivors were captured shortly after the crash. The second pair fared even worse, with both the aircraft and glider crashing into a mountain after the aircraft flew low in search of the first glider. Both members of the glider crew were killed instantly, while one soldier passenger died soon afterwards from his injuries. Those who survived the crashes were captured by German forces and killed as a result of Wehrmacht's Commando Order, which stated that any Allied personnel captured while involved in commando operations were to be killed immediately. At the end of the war, the Wehrmacht personnel involved were tried, sentenced to death and executed for their part in the murders. A number of descendants and family members of Operation Freshman were present to hear this poignant and superbly researched talk, which was mounted in aid of Museum funds.Support the showIf you like what you hear, don't forget to like and subscribe to help us reach a wider audience. In this episode of Shipped Across The Border, we sit down with Jamie Lawson Jr. to break down what our first college basketball season at Elms really felt like, from adjusting to the competition and expectations to getting through a year defined by constant lineup changes and injuries. We recap the 10 win season as a big program milestone while also being real about the frustration of missing the playoffs when we were right on the edge. From there, we get into what it actually takes to level up. We talk about how winning programs build continuity, why basketball IQ separates top teams, and how Jamie wants to train this offseason by tracking workouts and shooting so the improvement is measurable and not just a feeling. In the back half, we pivot into a surprisingly deep debate on when kids should get phones, how social media and child fame can mess with development, and why parents have to build structure so talent does not get swallowed by hype. We close with next year plans, our schedule philosophy, record goals, and what it would mean for Elms to start earning real postseason recognition and performance based awards.Topics we cover:Freshman season reality check, team growth, and the playoff missInjuries, depth, and constantly changing lineupsProgram building and continuityOffseason development plan, tracking, shooting work, getting quicker and strongerKids and phones, TikTok and child star fame, and why hype can ruin talentNext year goals, scheduling, conference expectations, postseason recognition-All the Socials: https://linktr.ee/SATB_Pod-Time Stamps: 00:26 – Full intro, Jamie's first college season and expectations07:02 – Building a program, St. Joe's Maine continuity and winning over years13:40 – Offseason plan: IQ, quickness, physicality, and tracking shots20:56 – Life after hoops: structure, screen time, needing a new video game23:43 – Phone debate: what age should kids get phones29:04 – Kids, content, and money: early phones, TikTok, and viral child creators32:34 – Child stars vs TikTok fame: Bieber, Baby Gronk, Disney kids35:54 – Psychological cost of fame, parents' responsibility, “getting treated different”38:15 – Julian Newman example and what happens when validation disappears39:41 – Transition point toward getting back on hoops / future focus41:05 – Pivot back to basketball, offseason routine (open gym, lifting)42:06 – Spring break plans and LA talk (In-N-Out, Venice Beach, Roscoe's)44:40 – Screen time limiters, “fiending,” and why Facebook becomes rock bottom48:42 – Childhood screen time restrictions, going outside, and how parenting flipped52:21 – Back to hoops: Northeast vs North Carolina style of play differences55:03 – Individual + team goals for next year (awards, shooting, playoffs, Final Four talk)59:17 – Non-conference scheduling debate: tougher teams vs easier wins59:46 – Balance take: need confidence-building wins and “learn from losses” games01:00:16 – Next year schedule philosophy: tougher teams vs easier wins (continued)01:01:43 – Ideal record talk: 16–9 overall, 10–6 in conference01:02:43 – Shout out Mary Turco, all-conference awards, program profile01:03:36 – Final words, closing prompt

Freshman year is often dismissed as "just the beginning," but in this episode, Sarah Bergin, Director of College Consulting at Evolved Education, explains why ninth grade quietly sets the tone for growth throughout high school. Rather than chasing perfection, Sarah encourages students and parents to focus on building strong habits, confidence, and thoughtful exploration. Freshman year is about adjustment, resilience, and setting a foundation academically and socially. Colleges are not looking for polished resumes from 14-year-olds — they're looking for evidence of growth, curiosity, and upward trends. This year becomes the baseline. How students handle new expectations, independence, and challenges matters more than flawless grades. When students prioritize consistent habits and balanced exploration, they build the confidence needed for the years ahead. You'll learn: Why freshman year grades matter more than many think The importance of habits, confidence, and appropriate challenge How extracurricular exploration sets the stage for growth Why parents should normalize adjustment and avoid projecting anxiety If your family wants guidance on setting the right foundation and building momentum early, reach out to Evolved Education for thoughtful, personalized support. Aaron Graves is from Dayton, IA and prepped at Southeast Valley High school. He became the youngest player to ever commit to the Hawkeyes just after his Freshman year and completely shut down his recruiting after verbally agreeing to be a Hawkeye. He joins the show from Texas where he's training for combine/pro day drills while living with his wife and newborn. Graves recounts the hectic 48 hours around the Nebraska game when his son was born on Thanksgiving Day, including a late-night charter flight to Lincoln, skipping meetings, playing, returning straight to the hospital, and receiving a game ball and framed display after Iowa's 40–16 win. He reflects on committing to Iowa as a sophomore after his first offer from Kirk Ferentz, growing up in Dayton, Iowa and Southeast Valley (a small district spanning 13 towns), playing multiple sports, winning the school's first state title, and finishing as the program's all-time leading basketball scorer. Graves discusses arriving at Iowa with the goal to control effort and preparation, earning early snaps and his first sack, and the wake-up call of playing at Ohio State as a freshman. He explains leadership growth into a starting role, the impact of older teammates in a roster now filled with fifth- and sixth-year players, and how Iowa approached NIL and revenue sharing by avoiding pay talk to prevent locker-room friction. Graves details graduating quickly—earning an associate degree from Iowa Central before high school, completing his exercise science bachelor's in four semesters, and finishing a sport and recreation management master's in three. He also addresses disappointment over not being invited to the NFL Combine, argues both he and Gronowski are deserving, and shares how Mark earned trust through competitiveness and steady improvement. The episode closes with Graves' plan for making a 53-man roster and his confidence heading into Iowa's pro day reunion with teammates. Consistency under pressure can look effortless from the outside. But if you've ever stood there waiting to salute, you know it rarely feels that way. In this episode, I sit down with LSU freshman Haley Mustari to break down what actually creates that calm, confident performance. After watching her stick her first collegiate bar routine, I wanted to know what was going on in her mind. Her answer was simple: “Do your normal.” She is not trying to be extraordinary in the moment. She is trusting the reps she has already done.We talk about how visualization became part of her daily routine, not just something she turns on at meets. When mental skills are practiced every day, they feel natural under pressure. She also shares how she uses short, clear cues to stay focused one skill at a time, instead of letting her thoughts spiral. We explore failure, too. From a Level 9 bar routine that ended in a fall and a score of 1, to years of repetition that built real awareness, Haley shows how mistakes become information. Frustration, for her, sharpens focus instead of creating drama. If you struggle with overthinking or carrying mistakes from one event to the next, this conversation will help you reset. Confidence is not about being perfect. It is about trusting your preparation and narrowing your focus to what you can control right now.In this episode, you will hear • Why “do your normal” is a powerful competition mindset • How daily visualization builds trust under pressure • How to turn frustration into focus • Why failure is part of long-term confidenceIn this week's episode of the PerformHappy Podcast, I share how trusting your training and simplifying your mindset can help you compete with more calm, clarity, and confidence.Learn exactly what to say and do to guide your athlete through a mental block with my new book "Parenting Through Mental Blocks" Order your copy today: https://a.co/d/g990BurFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/complete_performance/ Join my FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/completeperformancecoaching/ Check out my website: https://completeperformancecoaching.com/Write to me!
