Sustainability In The Air
Is demand management in aviation a myth or reality?

Sustainability In The Air

In this special episode, we bring together Patrick Edmond, Managing Director of Altair Advisory, and Shashank Nigam, CEO of SimpliFlying, to discuss whether aviation demand management is a myth or a necessary component of climate action. Moderated by Dirk Singer, SimpliFlying's Head of Sustainability, the discussion stems from a heated LinkedIn exchange between Patrick and Shashank, sparked by Shashank's reflections after speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year. As the debate gained momentum online, many called for a live conversation – so we decided to host the debate on Sustainability in the Air.The debate covers:The fundamental tension between airline growth ambitions and climate goals, with Shashank sharing insights from his Davos roundtable where aviation CEOs emphasised unfettered growth instead of sustainable growth. The concept of the “guilt premium” versus the “good global citizen premium” in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) adoption to achieve price parity, with Patrick arguing that systemic policy changes are needed rather than relying on individual airline actions. The relationship between ticket pricing and travel behaviour, and whether raising ticket prices can curb aviation demand. The frequent flyer problem, with a small percentage of travellers accounting for a disproportionate share of emissions, and why a frequent flyer levy is an effective solution.Unexpected silver linings, such as how loyalty program changes might inadvertently encourage more sustainable corporate travel practices. In the end, despite their differing perspectives, Shashank and Patrick found common ground, agreeing that while technological innovation is crucial, broader systemic approaches are needed to address aviation's growing climate impact. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Lee Beck and Thomas Walker of the Clean Air Task Force who discuss the complex challenges and innovative solutions for decarbonising the aviation industry. In this episode, we talk to Lee Beck, Senior Director for Europe and the Middle East, and Thomas Walker, Transportation Technology Manager at Clean Air Task Force (CATF), who share insights into innovative solutions for decarbonising the aviation industry.Beck and Walker discuss CATF's role as a global climate organisation focused on overlooked solutions for decarbonisation and provide a forward-looking perspective on the future of sustainable aviation. They highlight several key issues:The potential of synthetic fuels to make up over 50% of aviation fuel by 2050, and the policy measures necessary to achieve this ambitious goal. The limitations of biofuels in meeting long-term aviation demand, and the need to explore alternative fuel sources. The promise and challenges of hydrogen-powered aircraft, particularly for regional flights, and the significant infrastructure changes required. The potential of ammonia as an aviation fuel, its advantages over hydrogen, and the hurdles to its adoption. The current limitations of electric aircraft due to battery energy density constraints, and their potential niche applications. The importance of carbon capture and storage in producing synthetic fuels and decarbonising the aviation industry. The need for an options-based approach to decarbonisation, maintaining multiple technological pathways to address the complex challenge of aviation emissions.Throughout the conversation, Beck and Walker advocate for a diverse portfolio of solutions and strong international collaboration to address aviation's environmental impact, while expressing cautious optimism about the sector's ability to achieve significant emissions reductions in the coming decades. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Andrew Chen, Principal for Aviation Decarbonisation at RMI, who shares the RMI's multi-faceted approach to aviation decarbonisation. In this, our final episode of the Practical Radicals Podcast, we hear from over a dozen progressive leaders, including several former students, and reflect with them about what we've learned since the book Practical Radicals came out last November and what we make of the path ahead — as the U.S. and the world face a daunting and overlapping set of crises. We offer thoughts on the seven strategy models, looking at exciting developments in the field as well as areas that could improve. Base-building in community organizing faces major challenges. Sulma Arias has reoriented her organization, People's Action, to spark a “revival of community organizing,” a field whose crisis became more acute and widely acknowledged during the COVID pandemic. The labor movement, by contrast, is experiencing its most exciting resurgence in decades. Stephen Lerner — whose organization, Bargaining for the Common Good, brings together unions and community groups to work on joint strategies — sees tremendous promise in labor's upsurge, pointing especially to the prospect of organizing entire sectors and taking on “the giant corporations that are driving the whole economy.”  Thomas Walker of the Communications Workers of America explains why he thinks building on labor's momentum calls for unions to spend more of their assets on base-building and to support new ways of organizing.  Maurice Mitchell of the Working Families Party argues that movements need to get serious about governing power, which requires treating progressives elected to office as co-conspirators rather than targets. Lydia Avila describes her work with California Calls, which hopes to build a grassroots leadership development pipeline and combine the best principles of community organizing with electoral politics.  A key strategy in the years ahead will be disruption, which Lisa Fithian, author of Shut it Down, argues is a “transformational process” that can give people a greater sense of agency over their own lives and the world. Lissy Romanow, who used to run the training institute called Momentum, points to hopeful examples where momentum as a strategy is being combined with more long-term base-building work.  We then offer thoughts on the ways movements and organizations need to adapt to get sharper on strategy. Texas activist Asha Dane'el addresses the importance of developing a long-term vision and investing in leadership development that combines “rigor and compassion.” Alex Tom tells us how the Chinese Progressive Association hit upon a hugely successful new approach to fostering organizational alignment and preventing unnecessary internal conflict by writing a “culture operations document,” which is given to all new staff and explains the organization's vision and leadership philosophy as well as key terminology. Doran Schrantz describes the commitment to leadership and other factors that have allowed ISAIAH, a church-based organization, and labor and community partners in Minnesota to transform the state.  We conclude with some thoughts on our current historical conjuncture. Overdogs have never wanted a true democracy, and right now, they see an opening for autocracy. As Ian Bassin of Protect Democracy explains, by objective scholarly measures, “US democracy has been declining faster [in recent years] than almost any other country on the planet.” Alicia Garza, one of the founders of Black Lives Matter, argues that it's crucial to form not only a “united front,” which brings together different elements of the left, but also a “popular front,” which unites the left with the center and even pro-democracy elements of the right. As the recent victories in France, India, and Brazil illustrate, there is nothing inevitable about the slide to authoritarianism — if we can achieve the unity and will to fight it. A lot of younger Australians don't think much about aged care. Let's be honest – if they do think about growing old – it's usually dreaming of a comfortable retirement when they can stop working and tap into their superannuation – not necessarily what their aged care might involve. But that superannuation we're all contributing to – could end up being critical to the sort of aged care we ultimately receive. The government has been grappling with how to properly fund aged care – to fix some of the problems identified in a recent Royal Commission report and to accommodate the demographic bulge of baby boomers moving into their senior years. This week the final report of the government's Aged Care Taskforce was released. It's recommended more user-pays. Those who can afford to do so – should pay more.Exactly who pays and how much – is now up to the government to decide.  So is this the right approach? And what sort of aged care can we expect in the future?David Speers talks to the youngest member of the Taskforce Report, Thomas Walker – specifically chosen to bring a Generation Y perspective to the aged care debate – to find out why the taskforce is so concerned about how we pay for it.Insiders: On Background digs a little deeper into an issue that will be covered on the show each week with an expert to better understand the debates dominating politics.

This lesson is on Acts 3:1-11, Peter's healing (with John) of a lame man (who had never walked) at the Beautiful Gate, begging for alms.  To his plea, Peter spoke the famous words, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk" - and the man who had never stood on his own legs before, much less know how to walk, immediately leaped up, walked, went into the Temple walking, leaping, and praising God!  Isn't it wonderful the former lame man knew to whom the praise belonged?  He did not kiss the hand of Peter; nor did he even praise Peter.  His praise went to the Lord, Who the man knew and understood had done the healing through His servants!  "The power was Christ's, but the hand was Peter's" (Thomas Walker).  This was the Lord continuing His work on earth through His Church by His Spirit.  This was an Apostolic miracle.  This miracle confirmed the great sermon he had just preached (his first, and the first of the Church Age).  Remember - the miracle confirmed the message, and it was the message that produced the fruit!

A FUN AND WILD PULP ADVENTURE! Fans of pulp heroes like the Shadow, the Spider, the Black Bat, and the Avenger will adore this new pulp magazine inspired series! Avenging justice moves unseen in the night mist, then a black-clad hand emerges to grasp and destroy evil. The Man of the Mist has struck yet another blow against crime. The ones who live whisper of him from their jail cells. "I heard an eerie voice from the fog," they say tremblingly. "Crime is the train to death!" the Man of the Mist whispered. "Once you board that train, you are on your way to the final stop." Trail of the Bat Beasts is like a slap in the face with nonstop, pulse pounding, pulp action shot directly out of the late 1930s. In his first full-length adventure, Ralph Thorn, a wealthy industrialist whose secret identity is the Man of the Mist, embarks on a trail of vengeance against the person or creature that murdered close friend and News Tribune editorial cartoonist Thomas Walker. Thorn uses his amazing skills to, literally, listen in on the brains of his enemies in their own homes in order to track down criminal perpetrators of evil and bring them to their "end of the line" - justice. A master of mind control who can create and move invisibly though dense fog and mist, Thorn, aided by his beautiful blonde assistant, Moxie Malone, battles a criminal organization that uses horrifying monsters to terrorize the big city: human-faced bat creatures on a mission of mass murder and a shroud-wearing banshee with incredible powers. News Tribune publisher Lon Graham had advised the editorial cartoonist to "show no mercy to local politicians". But after Walker is murdered, it is the Man of the Mist who sets out to show no mercy to crooked elected officials, mobsters, murderers and those who prey on the innocent. But, with all of his amazing mind-control abilities, can he defeat a long-dead evil with power beyond even the Man of the Mist's comprehension? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

On Sunday October 20, 2019 America lost three of her sons to a tragic training accident. We salute troops here because we appreciate what they do for us, and we salute them for accepting the risk of service, so that we all can live in a free America. Today we salute Sergeant First Class Bryan Jenkins of Gainesville, Florida; Corporal Thomas Walker of Conneaut, Ohio; And Private First Class Antonio Garcia of Peoria, Arizona of the US Army’s 3rd Infantry Division 1st Armored Brigade. Just before 3:30 am on that Sunday, the Bradley armored fighting vehicle these three soldiers were riding in rolled off a bridge during a training exercise, and landed upside down in a stream. All three of these brave soldiers lost their lives in the accident. 3 more soldiers who were riding in the vehicle were injured, but survived the wreck. Major General Antonio Aguto said in a statement, "The training is tough, realistic, and we train for all sorts of conditions no matter where we would go." He added "It's hard enough when you lose one soldier, but losing three at one time amplifies the pain we are all feeling." The loss of these three soldiers is a reminder to all of us that our troops face danger from the time they sign up to serve, until they leave the service of the nation. They are in the business of making war, and that means they must prepare for threats. Each of us owes our gratitude to the men and women who accept that risk so that we can live in this free nation. For their sacrifice to the cause of freedom, today we salute: Sergeant First Class Bryan Jenkins; Corporal Thomas Walker and Private First Class Antonio Garcia, of the United States Army.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today our guest is Karen Thompson Walker. She is the author of The Age of Miracles, which we had a discussion about a couple of years ago. (at my age everything is a couple of years ago). Her new nook is The Dreamers, and the title describes perfectly what goes on in the book, which was just published last week by Random house. An epidemic, which starts very slowly, but accelerates at an alarming rate, begins with a girl who falls asleep. Even breathing, rosy cheeks, seemingly healthy. The problem and the crux of this book which has a very dreamy (no pun) quality is one which I would not qualify as SF though some have. This problem is that the girl doesn’t wake up and soon, other girls in the same dormitory at the same college also begin to fall into this Sleeping Beauty state. Soon the problem becomes widespread and there is no explanation. Because of this increasingly emotionally charged situation, all hell breaks lose. Fear, suspicion, paranoia erupt, much as you might expect. The Dreamers dream, and their dreams are heightened to a state that is way beyond what we perceive to be a normal sleeping “consciousness” if you will... What happens as the book progresses is enlightening, confusing and as is her wont, Karen leaves us in a state of Wonder, not unlike that in her first book. I like books that do that.

This podcast focuses on Cumberland Gap as a special place of passing for thousands of years--a place with a long relationship to the affairs of man. It relates the important role the gap played in opening the West to settlement. The passage created by Cumberland Gap was well-traveled by Native Americans long before the arrival of European-American settlers. The earliest written account of Cumberland Gap dates to the 1670s, by Abraham Wood of Virginia. The gap was named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, son of King George II of Great Britain, who had many places named for him in the American colonies after the Battle of Culloden. The explorer Thomas Walker gave the name to the Cumberland River in 1750, and the name soon spread to many other features in the region, such as the Cumberland Gap. In 1769 Joseph Martin built a fort nearby at present-day Rose Hill, Virginia, on behalf of Dr. Walker's land claimants. But Martin and his men were chased out of the area by Native Americans, and Martin himself did not return until 1775. In 1775 Daniel Boone, hired by the Transylvania Company, arrived in the region leading a company of men to widen the path through the gap to make settlement of Kentucky and Tennessee easier. On his arrival Boone discovered that Martin had beaten him to Powell Valley, where Martin and his men were clearing land for their own settlement – the westernmost settlement in English colonial America at the time. By the 1790s the trail that Boone and his men built was widened to accommodate wagon traffic and sometimes became known as the Wilderness Road. Daniel Boone Escorting Settlers through the Cumberland Gap (George Caleb Bingham, oil on canvas, 1851–52) Several American Civil War engagements occurred in and around the Cumberland Gap and are sometimes called Battle of the Cumberland Gap. In June 1862, Union Army General George W. Morgan captured the gap for the Union. In September of that year, Confederate States Army forces under Edmund Kirby Smith occupied the gap during General Braxton Bragg's Kentucky Invasion. The following year, in a bloodless engagement in September 1863, Union Army troops under General Ambrose Burnside forced the surrender of 2,300 Confederates defending the gap, gaining Union control of the gap for the remainder of the war. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 300,000 migrants passed through the gap on their way into Kentucky and the Ohio Valley before 1810. Today 18,000 cars pass beneath the site daily, and 1,200,000 people visit the park on the site annually. U.S. Route 25E passed overland through the gap before the completion of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel in 1996.
