These podcasts were developed and produced by Dr. Ann Johns (with help from Meredith Gunn, BFA 2015, and many others) for the Department of Art and Art History's Learning Tuscany, a study abroad program based every summer in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. For six weeks, students live and work in a restored convent in a small Tuscan hilltown, and they also participate in numerous field trips to central Italy's important art cities, such as Florence, Rome, Siena, and others. We created some of these podcasts--ranging from about 7-15 minutes each--because of the near-impossibility, in some cases, of talking on-site (for example, the Sistine Chapel). In other instances, however, we created these podcasts to work as a type of "flipped classroom". Students learn about the works of art while listening to the podcasts, and then they interact with faculty and peers through additional questions, discussion, and assignments. Listeners are also able to proceed through museums and sites at their own pace, thus avoiding the "shepherd-and-sheep" model of so many on-site study abroad excursions.
