Crew Resource Management (CRM) has gone through many changes across the years trying to address Human Factors (HF) in aviation. As we sat down to discuss this subject, we realized that the general aviation community has not had a lot of access to these subjects, in particular the subject of Threat and Error Management (TEM).   That is why Korey Stafford, CEO of Echelon Flight Support, and I invited Mario Calzetta, a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in CRM, TEM, and HF, to be a part of a rich discussion on Threat and Error Management. Whether you are a professional aviator or a general aviation pilot, you will garner sound ideas about how to best apply safe pilot practices which stem from TEM. Our aim at PIRL is to stir high levels of aviation passion, performance, and proficiency in pilots across the globe. PIRL is currently in 20 countries and growing.   For more information   Pilot in Real Life pilotinreallife.com michael@pilotinreallife.com   Echelon Flight Support echelonflightsupport.com korey@echelonflightsupport.com michael@echelonflightsupport.com

According to Korey Stafford, a threat is anything that can complicate your life. A threat, according to the dictionary, is something which is potentially dangerous, painful, or may bring harm. Since flying has a certain amount of inherent risk, conducting a threat forward briefing prior to a flight makes sense. On episode one of Pilot in Real Life, Korey Stafford, CEO of Echelon Flight Support, and Michael Wright, Global Director of EFS and Executive Producer/Host for Pilot in Real Life, discussed Threat Forward Briefings in more detail. Korey and Michael go a bit deeper about briefings. Korey shares a real-life experience about how he and another pilot conducted a Threat Forward Briefing before traveling along the east coast. Because of strong weather, their flight was altered. A lower altitude required a new fuel burn calculation and more. The threats they faced had the possibility of complicating their flying life.On this episode Korey and Michael issue a challenge for all aviators. Listen and accept the challenge. Then go to pilotinreallife.com/contact, and then share via the contact form what are at least two possible threats you might encounter on your next flight. Then craft a plan about how you will adjust to meet the threats. We believe you will fly safer and grow as a pilot by taking on the challenge. When I first learned to fly a good friend said to me something we have all heard at least once. “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.” In a way, he was providing a Threat Forward Briefing (TFB). He was warning that on my next flight things can go terribly wrong and that I fly with caution and be prepared for anything. To this day, when I fly from the left seat, my friend and his words are in the right always reminding me to think ahead and arrive safely. (Michael Wright) On this very first official podcast of Pilot in Real Life Korey Stafford, CEO of Echelon Flight Support, and I discuss the Threat Forward Briefing (TFB). We uncover reasons why pilots should conduct TFB's prior to each flight. Korey specifically provides excellent ideas about how to evaluate flights using handwritten journaling and camera recording. (You might even find a good excuse for purchasing a new Go Pro which will help you use a recording of your flight to debrief your pilot skills. We suggest that aviators make friends with experience pilot mentors who will be able to provide unique insights about pilot skills and flight experience. We also call on pilot mentors to connect with newer pilots and give back to the community of aviators. The PIRL Challenge: 1. Acquire a journal and evaluate your flights using the Three W's. What went well? What did not go so well? What will you do differently? 2. Record your flights using a camera and debrief your flights with a pilot mentor.
