Skating Across America for Sobriety and Purpose In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie are joined by the incredible Chad Caruso — a skateboarder, YouTuber, and Guinness World Record holder who skated 3,000 miles across America in just 57 days, from Venice Beach, CA to Virginia Beach, VA. Chad didn't just break records — he used this cross-country journey to raise money for Natural High, a nonprofit youth drug prevention program, and to share his powerful story of overcoming addiction and injury. Skateboarding became more than a passion — it became a lifeline, helping Chad find sobriety, resilience, and purpose. In this episode Chad shares about: •His record-setting skate across the U.S. •What pushed him to keep going — physically, mentally, and emotionally •How skateboarding saved his life •His work raising awareness for addiction and mental health •The creation of his book, “Pushing Through America” •What's next in his mission to inspire and uplift others Chad's journey is one of grit, growth, and giving back. Whether you're a skater, in recovery, or just need a push to chase your own goals — this episode is for you. Follow Chad on Instagram: @chad_caruso Check out his book: Pushing Through America In This Episode You Will Hear: • I've been skateboarding for a little over 25 years. That's really all I've devoted my life to. (3:19) • I definitely recommend finishing school. (5:36) • It doesn't happen overnight. You go to a party here, a party there. Then you're 26, 28. The habit thing. I didn't want to be a part of the system. I was just all about rebelling. (7:40) • That was the real turning point [when facing jail time] I had to look around and say “Alright, what are you doin?” (10:02) • [I got into the Guinness Book of World Records] It was this year. (13:30) • It's nice to get the pat on the back, but ultimately, it was about much more than that. It was about giving up the drinking, focusing on something positive. I did the Skate Across America to raise money for charity. (13:40) • When you're at the start line it's all fun. Everyone's there filming, talking, it's exciting. Then you push off, and then a couple of miles in, you're like “Oh, I'm gonna be doing this for the next 2 months. (18:32) • [I completed the entire distance with] 1 board; I didn't change the wheels or the bearings, or anything. (23:56) • Even if it's way slower than you normally go, if you keep treading that ground, you're gonna make it there. (28:55) • I figured out that if I skate head-on to trucks, like tractor trailers; they're coming at me at 70 mph. If I made myself seen, I could take over the whole lane. So, I would basically play chicken with them, and wave them out of the way. (30:14) • [At the finish] The mayor put his hand up for a high five. I skated right past him, I didn't even notice. (35:23) • “If you keep pushing, you're gonna get there.” (36:17) • When you're out there alone for so many hours, all the noise of society and people's opinions kinda fades away. (36:26) • When you're left to yourself, you realize how simple life is. (36:35) • Quitting drinking and focusing on my hobby turned my life around. (41:34) • Whatever you're most interested in or gets you excited – just pursue that. (41:52) • If I can help to make this life a little bit better, that's a win. How do you stay positive under duress? It doesn't matter how adventurous, fit, risk tolerant or determined you are. At some point, you will find yourself in a situation where it becomes hard to stay positive or even to find the will to keep going. It could be as simple as sitting on a cold wet chairlift, riding your bike on a long climb that feels endless or out on a hike that seems to go on forever.Joining us in this episode to explore how we can effectively manage our mental state in the face of discomfort is Cyril Derreamaux. Cyril is a long-distance solo kayaker, adventurer and speaker.Cyril has just completed solo kayaking, unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean on his way from the Canary Islands to Martinique. This 3000-mile journey took Cyril 71 days, 14 hours and 57 minutes.Cyril has also paddled his custom-made kayak solo from California to Hawaii. This is a trip that took him 91 days which he completed in 2022.Cyril is a two-time World Record Holder who has several other long-distance trips under his belt including being part of a four-member rowing team that also paddled from California to Hawaii.Cyril is an epic speaker and is perhaps one of the most passionate guests we have had on our show and he offers some excellent advice!Key TakeawaysHow do you maintain a positive mindset in the face of adversity:Self-Awareness: If we want to coach ourselves, we need to be able to recognize when our discomfort is becoming an anchor that is dragging us down and what is needed to push us forward.Being the Self Critic: Requires us to ask ourselves if the pattern of behaviour that we have is good or bad. For example, is how we feel negatively impacting our performance and becoming a barrier to success?Getting a Third-party Opinion: This means asking others for their feedback. Sometimes we need to reach outside ourselves to get an objective assessment of how we are doing. This can involve asking our friends, colleagues or even feeling out our guests.Reframing: This involves confronting the situation in a way that helps us to change our perception from something that might be negative to something that is more positive. This can help us to adapt more effectively mentally.Adapt and Execute: Means putting all of this into action and moving forward. Once we recognize this, we can start to take steps to manage our mental and emotional state so that we can better cope with our situation and keep us going in the direction that we need to be headed.Guest BioFrench born, now American citizen, Cyril Derreumaux considers himself a citizen of the world. Fluent speaker of 6 languages (and counting!) Cyril is attracted to learning and discovering new cultures and places all the time. This natural curiosity of people and places led Cyril to backpack around the world at 25 for one year. With $7,000 and a can-do attitude Cyril embarked on this life changing experience that permanently changed his outlook on life and how he wanted to live it.A move to California following his profession in the wine business led Cyril to begin exploring the world of outrigger canoeing and kayaking and reignited a childhood passion for windsurfing and all things water related. He soon began pushing his limits further and further in ultra-endurance water events. A serendipitous find of the Great Pacific Race which advertised “you don't need to be a rower to row an ocean” led Cyril to embark on his biggest challenge at the time, rowing in a team of 4 men from California to Hawaii which resulted in in a Guinness Record for the fastest ocean rowing crossing of a team in 39 days and again changing Cyril's perspective on what was possible.Always a dreamer, Cyril soon found himself thinking about his next expedition. Inspired by the stories of maverick ocean explorers, Cyril began to...

This is a special live recording featuring 8x masters world record holder Sue McDonald, 61, in conversation with WRS host and producer Cherie; that's me. We sat down the Tracksmith track house in Boston on Sat., Feb 1, to a wonderful group who braved snowy weather for this terrific conversation. We get into how McDonald has stayed healthy and competitive over her 40-plus year career as a highly competitive athlete—in many sports. And how, at age 59, she looked over the record books and set to raising the bar for what's possible for women athletes her age. She targeted not one, but many world bests. In her training and preparation McDonald left no stone unturned, and she talks about it all. Plus what she's doing today to remain fast, and work to get faster. This conversation, and the terrific Q&A that followed, provides many useful tips and takeaways to use in your own training and racing. Whether you're a masters racer, or you aspire to be one someday, there's a lot here for you. Sue McDonald currently holds 8 world records: 400m and 800m indoor and outdoor; 1 mile indoor; 300m hurdles; steeplechase, and heptathlon. She was a heptathlete through college, and became a nationally competitive pole vaulter in her post-collegiate years. She has also competed as a triathlete, and in 2018, she ran the Boston Marathon (the storm year!). In 2023 McDonald set 9 world records for 60-64 masters women and was named the USATF Masters Track and Field Athlete of the Year. To put her records in a different context, McDonald set or reset 15 world records over a 16 month period. Matt Dawson is a six-time world-record-holding endurance and adventure athlete who, within a twelve-month period, climbed the highest peak on every continent, skied to the South Pole, trekked solo and unsupported across the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, and rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. Performing in the planet's harshest environments, he learned that his greatest obstacles don't originate in the outside world, but within himself. That life doesn't have to be a relentless battle against his deepest fears and shortcomings. His new book, Strength In Surrender beckons you to embrace a different path and reveals a harrowing truth: one of the greatest acts of courage is surrender. Surrender isn't giving in, giving up, or going along, but rather choosing to face and release our deepest fears in order to identify more productive ways of meeting our needs. It's a powerful, necessary step to living a life of greater purpose. Takeaways · Physical challenges can help in reconnecting with oneself. · Disconnection is a common issue in today's society. · Facing fears is essential for emotional release. · Reality is not as concrete as we believe it to be. · We have the power to shape our own reality. · Living with purpose is crucial for fulfilment. · Emotional pain can lead to significant breakthroughs. · The journey to finding purpose can take time. · Engaging in physical challenges can foster personal growth. Living a life of purpose can significantly improve mental health.. · Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. · No one is truly alone in their struggles; many share similar pains. · Embracing discomfort can lead to profound personal growth. · Focusing on the process rather than just the outcome is crucial. · Surrendering to the unknown can lead to new opportunities for growth. · Personal evolution is about learning to trust oneself and others. And so, if you have a big goal, a big family, or a big business to run, it takes a lot of people to make that happen.” “Our calendar really is the truth-teller of what we value in our lives.” “If you always do things right, you don't learn a thing. You only learn when you fail.” “I need to be kind to myself because that actually makes me stronger. The world's hard enough—me being hard on myself isn't going to help the situation at all.” “No one remembers what the goal looks like. They remember the score of the game.” “No's are actually a good thing. Those no's are so important because, first of all, a no almost always is not a forever no—it's a no at the moment. And the other is that when they say no, that helps narrow the pool down for you. It gets you closer to knowing who your people are.” “Not all crazy ideas are good, but all good ideas are a little bit crazy.” “The more we can invest in ourselves, the more it gives us to invest in other people. You can't give what you don't have.” BOOKS MENTIONED: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by R. Stephen Covey (https://a.co/d/iSg11cx) The Richest Man In Babylon by George S. In this week's episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast I got to speak with Wilhelm Lilge (@wilhelmlilge) Wilhelm holds the 60-64 age group world record in HYROX with a time of 1.09 – from his first ever solo race! He is not only an impressive athlete though but has been a coach for much of his life, including many years as a national running coach for the Austrian Athletics Association where he's worked with many Olympians and world and European championship athletes. Wilhelm is a passionate anti-doping campaigner, and we talk a little about that, as well as his thoughts on training for HYROX, lactate testing, why he thinks Alexander Roncevic can be even faster, and much more. It was a great chat, and I think you'll get lots from it.
Let's be clear about one thing: Lisa Isom has been crushing the endurance sports scene for a long time....and she's showing no signs of slowing down, either. Now in her 50s, the Eagle Valley High School legend, XTERRA Worlds podium placer and former USA Mountain trail team member is giving back some of her wisdom as head coach of the Battle Mountain Nordic ski team. Pretty cool for someone who originally earned a college scholarship for volleyball and didn't run her first cross-country race until after high school.... Isom would need at least a 3 hours podcast to share all of her sports stories and wisdom, but we only had about 45 minutes before she had to head out from Tennessee Pass for practice in Vail. ...so....this is all for now...but we'd love to bring her back on the show sometime in the future. Thank you, Lisa, for the time. If you liked this show and want to support the cause, go here! Merry Christmas! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/seder-skier/support

In this week's episode I'm excited to bring you my conversation with Sinéad Bent (@sineadbentx). Sinéad has burst onto the HYROX scene in the past year or so, and recently, in London, broke the Women's Open world in an incredible time of 58.47, as well as an age group world record in the womens doubles. She is, for sure, a potential future Elite 15 athlete in the sport, and it was great to get to speak to her about her sporting background, her HYROX training, her mindset and lots more.
From SBS Special Forces to World Record Holder: Dean Stott's remarkable journey embodies the relentless pursuit of excellence. A 16-year military veteran who served in the UK's elite Special Boat Service, Dean's path took an unexpected turn when a 2011 injury led him into high-stakes private security. His expertise became indispensable to world leaders, including a legendary solo evacuation of the Canadian Embassy in Libya in 2014. Dean wasn't finished pushing the boundaries. In 2016, he embarked on an extraordinary challenge: cycling the entire 14,000-mile Pan-American Highway. Not only did he complete this gruelling journey, but he also shattered two world records in the process, finishing in just 99 days.
