Welcome to Episode 6 of the "I'm Just Dizzy" Podcast. Today, we delve into the intricacies of the startle response, an indicator that our nervous system is on high alert—like an internal alarm that can trigger with minimal movement, no apparent threat, or simply due to an overload of sensory stimulation. In this episode, we will explore various types of startle responses, including recent research that extends our understanding beyond the traditional fight-or-flight response. We'll examine how these responses can impact our balance and tolerance to peripheral visual stimuli. Moreover, I will share effective rehabilitation strategies aimed at managing the startle response when it disrupts daily activities and increases the risk of falls. We will conclude with practical tips you can implement at home to mitigate the negative effects of a heightened startle response. To support your journey, a handout with practical strategies is available for you.If you're ready, let's embark on this journey to better understand the startle response and learn how to balance its beneficial aspects against its potential to become maladaptive.Looking for more resources? You're peacefully drifting off to sleep when suddenly you feel as if you're falling into a void and you startle awake. This rather unpleasant sensation is known as a ‘hypnic jerk' and is a common occurrence. It is an involuntary muscle spasm, a bit like a hiccup, also known as ‘myoclonus'. Sometimes, this sensation is accompanied by the feeling or the dream that you are falling.  These twitches are your body's bedtime quirks, popping up in the twilight zone of sleep – that light stage between being awake and snoozing soundly in deep sleep. They're like an accidental alarm that can, annoyingly, snap us back to reality. As we drift off, our muscles take a breather, but our brain does a quick systems check to ensure everything's alright, triggering that startling reflex. What's happening when we experience these sudden spasms? Can anything amplify this startling sensation? Should we be worried about these nighttime jolts? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Harbor seals eat a lot of different things, over 60 different prey species in fact. This includes salmon, which here in the Pacific Northwest puts seals in competition with humans and other species that rely on salmon as well. Salmon runs are greatly in decline, with many of them threatened or endangered. Seals are often seen as a major impediment to salmon recovery, even though they are not the reason the salmon are in decline in the first place. So researchers are looking for ways to lower their impact on salmon populations in non-lethal ways (vs. widespread culling which has been brought to the table). Acoustic deterrent devices have been used for many years as a way to scare seals away, but come with costs including hearing damage, impact to other species and habitat displacement. This paper talks about a new technology that is species specific and limits possible hearing damage and habitat displacment. It is an exciting example of how we can find ways to protect both the salmon and the seals at the same time. Learn about how this new technology works and the possible impacts it could have for both these species. Paper is open access, access it HERE.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.05.04.538315v1?rss=1 Authors: Huang, W., Cano, J., Fenelon, K. Abstract: Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the auditory startle response is the gold standard operational measure of sensorimotor gating. Affected by various neurological and neuropsychiatric illnesses, PPI also declines during aging. While PPI deficits are often associated with cognitive overload, attention impairments and motor dysfunctions, their reversal is routinely used in experimental systems for drug screening. Yet, the cellular and circuit-level mechanisms of PPI remain unclear, even under non-pathological conditions. Recent evidence shows that neurons located in the brainstem caudal pontine reticular nucleus (PnC) expressing the glycine transporter type 2 (GlyT2+) receive inputs from the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) and contribute to PPI via an uncharted pathway. Using tract-tracing and immunohistochemical analyses in GlyT2-eGFP mice, we reveal the neuroanatomical location of CeA glutamatergic neurons innervating GlyT2+ neurons. Our precise in vitro optogenetic manipulations coupled to field electrophysiological recordings demonstrate that CeA glutamatergic inputs do suppress auditory neurotransmission in PnC neurons but not via action on transmitter release from auditory afferents. Rather, our data is consistent with excitatory drive onto GlyT2+ neurons. Indeed, our PPI experiments in vivo demonstrate that optogenetic activation of GlyT2+ PnC neurons increases PPI and is sufficient to induce PPI, clarifying the crucial role of these neurons in young GlyT2-Cre mice. In contrast, in older GlyT2-Cre mice, PPI is reduced and not further altered by optogenetic inhibition of GlyT2+ neurons. We conclude that GlyT2+ PnC neurons innervated by CeA glutamatergic inputs are crucial for PPI and we highlight their reduced activity during the age-dependent decline in PPI. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.06.531430v1?rss=1 Authors: Olivera-Pasilio, V., Dabrowska, J. Abstract: Fear-potentiated startle (FPS) has been widely used to study fear processing in humans and rodents. Human studies have shown higher startle amplitudes and exaggerated fear reactivity to unpredictable vs. predictable threats in individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although human FPS studies often use both sexes, a surprisingly limited number of rodent FPS studies use females. Here we investigate the effects of signal-threat contingency, signal-threat order and threat predictability on FPS in both sexes. We use a classic fear-conditioning protocol (100% contingency of cue and shock pairings, with forward conditioning such that the cue co-terminates with the shock) and compare it to modified fear-conditioning protocols (70% contingency; backward conditioning; or cue and shock unpaired). Although there are no sex differences in the startle amplitudes when corrected for body weight, females demonstrate higher shock reactivity during fear-conditioning. Both sexes demonstrate comparable levels of cued, non-cued, and contextual fear in the classic FPS but females show reduced fear discrimination vs. males. Fear-conditioning with 70% contingency or backward order (cue co-starts with shock) induces similar levels of cued, non-cued, and contextual fear in both sexes but they differ in contextual fear extinction. Lastly, a prominent sex difference is uncovered following unpredictable fear-conditioning protocol (cue and shock un-paired), with females showing significantly higher startle overall during the FPS recall, regardless of trial type, and higher contextual fear than males. This striking sex difference in processing unpredictable threats in rodent FPS might help to understand the mechanisms underlying higher incidence of PTSD in women. Today we're continuing our current series and learning all about reflexes! Today I'll be teaching you about two reflexes - the Palmar reflex and the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR). These two reflexes are classified as primitive reflexes which means they are already present in a baby during pregnancy. These reflexes have very important neurological functions during gestation and the first weeks and months of a newborn baby's life. In this episode, I give a detailed overview of what each of these two reflexes does, why they're so important, and how they set a baby up for success later in childhood and as an adult. If these reflexes don't properly integrate, they can impede a child's fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination, their ability to crawl, speak, and write. I want people to understand that development is like a scaffold. These reflexes lay down important patterns in our brains - before we learn sensory motor connection. If we want to get to the root problems of child developmental issues, we need to look at these reflexes. If kids are missing any of these essential pieces in their development, their brains and bodies will adapt, but these adaptations come at a cost. I hope this episode will be informative and helpful and give you the tools you need to help your child reach their full potential! 56. The World of Reflexes: Moro Reflex (aka the startle reflex)

Welcome back to another episode of Connect My Brain! Today we're continuing our world of reflexes series. I started learning about reflexes in 2006 and it helped explain what I was seeing in children all the time. Reflexes are a vital piece of development but if they don't integrate properly, they can cause major problems. Even if reflexes do integrate properly, they can reemerge at any time. Today I'll be talking about what I call the “enchilada of all reflexes” - the Moro reflex. If you've listened to this podcast for a while, then you've heard me talk about the Moro reflex before, but it deserved a chance to finally have its own episode. The Moro reflex (also known as the startle reflex) comes into play at only 9 weeks gestation, is fully present at birth and in newborns, but should be fully integrated by about four months postnatal. This reflex activates three things - arousal, CO2/O2, and the sympathetic nervous system, also known as the fight or flight response. The Moro reflex is tied to every one of our senses and happens anytime we have a fight or flight reaction. In this episode, I'll give you a detailed overview of what the Moro reflex is and why it's so important, but I'll also take a close look at what happens if this reflex is retained, signs you or someone you know might be living with a retained Moro reflex, and how that might be impacting your life. I actually call myself a "recovered Moro" as I realized that I was living with a retained Moro reflex. Learning what was going on and reintegrating this reflex totally changed my world and I hope this episode will help you change yours too! “Spring Landscape”, a poem written over 1,000 years ago, remains one of China's most celebrated literary works. Composed by the 8th Century Tang dynasty poet Du Fu, it is still memorised by every schoolchild in the country. Why is the poem still so resonant today? The Economist's Beijing bureau chief, David Rennie, and senior China correspondent, Alice Su, consider whether the ambiguity of classical Chinese makes it ideal for poetry. Our deputy editor Edward Carr explores how close he can get to the poem in translation. Nicolas Chapuis, a former ambassador to China who is translating Du Fu's complete works into French, examines the meaning of one particular couplet of the poem. And Eileen Chengyin Chow of Duke University takes us outside China's poetry canon. Sign up to our weekly newsletter here. T., Assuncao-Miranda, I., Figueiredo, C. P., Clarke, J. R., Neves, G. A. Abstract: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection causes severe neurological consequences in both gestationally-exposed infants and adults. Sensorial gating deficits strongly correlate to the motor, sensorial and cognitive impairments observed in ZIKV-infected patients. However, to date, no startle response or prepulse inhibition (PPI) assessment has been made in patients or animal models. In this study, we identified different outcomes for the age of infection and sex in wild-type mice: neonatally infected animals presented an increase in PPI and startle latency in both sexes, while adult infected males presented lower startle amplitude but preserved PPI. Our data further the understanding of the functional impacts of ZIKV on the developing and mature nervous system, which could help explain other behavioral and cognitive alterations caused by the virus. With this study, we support the use of startle reflex testing in ZIKV exposed patients, especially infants, allowing for early detection of functional neuromotor damage and early intervention. Keeping everyone safe in 2020 yielded a new scare system concept at Dead City Haunted House in Salt Lake City Utah that was so effective, it will continue to be used long after the pandemic subsides. Owner Timothy Riggs conceived and engineered a new system for actors to operate props safely from a distance while above patrons. Nicknamed "The Puppeteers", each of these actors operated dozens of unique scares from a single bridge out of sight. The puppets movements were very startlingly scary and also a very cost-efficient use of actor staffing. Design methods are not expensive or complex and can be fabricated with the skill set of the average haunter.
