Please join us as we drink our way through Black history (i.e., American history), systemic oppression, and current events while working to dismantle racism - that's our sweet spot. Knowledge, community, and hope is where we find our power. Intersectionality is very real and our perspective as Black multi- and biracial women needs a voice in this conversation. Privilege is also real. Leveraging our expertise in race, history, and media + culture, Race & Rosé connects you with information, resources, and ideas to inspire change and progress within BIPOC communities, one sip at a time.
Pristina Alford + Daedra Staten
In this special delivery episode - "Special Delivery: Racism x The Royals, Part II - The Queen is Dead, Long Live Colonialism" - Pristina and Daedra discuss the recent death of Queen Elizabeth the II, or rather the long legacy of British colonization and imperial domination that the late queen and her family represent. If you haven't listened to the first Special Delivery episode re: Racism x The Royals, make sure to do so. Cheers!
In "Insurrection Eve - Part 2" - the second part of one-year-later, post-mortem on the January 6th, 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol - we discuss the government response to (or lack thereof) and the racial and voting implications of the insurrection. In the event that you missed it, in Part 1, we took a walk down memory lane to January 6th, 2021, and discussed the day-of timeline of events leading up to the now-infamous insurrection. Cheers!
Happy Western New Year! We're back after a looooong hiatus with another Special Delivery: Insurrection Eve - Part 1. In this episode, we will take a walk down memory lane to January 6th, 2021. We will discuss the timeline of events leading up to the now-infamous U.S. Capitol insurrection. In the event that you missed it, we covered this event one year ago with a two-parter in our first official episode: "Are Ya'll Okay?" Check it out if you missed it, and stay tuned for Part 2! (And yes, we promise, an entire first season of Race & Rosé is dropping imminently!). Cheers!
On this special delivery episode of Race & Rosé (this is another in-between-seasons special delivery ya'll), we discuss Juneteenth - the day that the last enslaved persons were formally freed in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865. We cover the history behind the holiday and a bit on how it's related to Critical Race Studies (more to come on this in our next episode). We also delve into the fact that Juneteenth just became a federal holiday - the first new federal holiday since MLK Day in 1983 - and what this means (and does not mean) for our country. Cheers!
In this episode of Race & Rosé (this is an in-between-seasons special delivery ya'll), "Special Delivery: Racism x The Royals," we discuss the recent Oprah x Meghan Markle interview. We initially only planned on covering the British Royal Family's (and the United Kingdom's/Great Britain's) history of colonization and enslavement. But, the interview opened the media and "influencer" floodgates, and everyone decided that they needed to voice an opinion on how Meghan Markle racially identifies, and whether or not she really even gets to call herself Black. So, naturally, we had a little something to say about that too. Enjoy!
In episode 4, "Black History Month Part 3" (the final episode of Season 0), we explore the links between Black history and the stories that we have been told - and are still being told - about ourselves and about Blackness in this country. We investigate the link(s) between Black history and media, representations of the Black family, incarceration, and music. And, as per usual, we throw a lot of shade. Enjoy!
In episode 3, "Black History Month Part 2" we take the deepest of historical deeeeeep dives, discussing the history behind the history of Black History Month ("BHM"). We talk about Carter G. Woodson, the creator of Negro History Week (the predecessor to BHM), Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass. We may even spend a good amount of time dragging the ultra racist 1915 film Birth of a Nation. Who knows? Give us a listen and find out!
In episode 2, "Black History Month Part 1" we discuss Black History Month, media, marketing, PR and "the culture." We also delve into the interconnectedness of all forms of racism in the United States, and specifically address the racism plaguing the Asian American community, considering both its deep historic roots and its recent surge.
In part 2 of episode 1, "Are Ya'll Okay?" we will continue our discussion of the white supremacy, white privilege, and racist symbolism present at the January 6th storming of the U.S. Capitol. We will also talk about the vast difference in the ways that police prepared for and responded to the white insurrectionist mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6th and the protestors who filled U.S. streets this past summer in support of the Black Lives Matter movement after the murder of George Floyd.
In this episode, we will discuss the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6th and the white supremacy that motivated this event. This is apt, considering that we are now witnessing the fallout from the storming: the congressional impeachment trial for former President Trump, the only president to ever have been impeached twice. Cheers!
