“The culture wars have completely eaten America,” says author Isaac Butler. His new book, ‘The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art, and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,' looks at how the religious right made a template for expressing grievance over art, and how that is used to this day to defund the National Endowment of the Arts. Butler spoke with Terry Gross. Episode 425: In May 1934, five identical girls were born in a farmhouse outside Corbeil, Ontario. They were the first quintuplets known to survive infancy anywhere in the world. Within weeks, the Province of Ontario had taken them from their parents. What followed was nine years inside a government-run compound called Quintland, where millions of tourists paid to watch the Dionne sisters play through one-way glass, twice a day, while their faces sold soap, cereal, and corn syrup across North America. The girls went home in 1943. The horror of what happened next took decades to come to light. SCHEDULE JBS, 6-25-26.JUNE 1957The Fog of Diplomacy in the Strait of Hormuz. Guest: Colonel Jeff McCausland. McCausland discusses a memorandum of understanding with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear weapons. He notes the Iranian requirement for reconstruction aid and the release of frozen assets. He also touches on the IDF's continued presence in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza despite regional negotiations. 1The Evolving Robotic Battlefield in Ukraine. Guest: Colonel Jeff McCausland. McCausland explains how drones have transformed the war in Ukraine, effectively cutting off Russian supply lines to Crimea. He discusses the massive casualty rates caused by drones and Ukraine's plan to deploy thousands of ground robots. Meanwhile, Russia faces severe manpower shortages and high casualty counts. 2Structural Fatigue and Leaks on the ISS Zvezda Module. Guest: Anatoly Zak. Zak details the critical role of the Zvezda module, which provides propulsion and life support for the International Space Station. He addresses growing concerns over air leaks and cracks in a transfer compartment. While currently manageable, the cracks reappear despite repeated sealing attempts. 3Almaz: The Secret Soviet Spy Station in Space. Guest: Anatoly Zak. Zak describes the top-secret Almaz program, military space stations camouflaged under the "Salyut" name for reconnaissance. These "spy satellites with men" took high-resolution photos of NATO bases. The program was eventually discontinued because robotic satellites proved more effective and less taxing on human crews. 4Emily Brontë's Dark Inspiration from the Family Vault. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz examines the profound impact of Emily Brontë's mother's death and the construction of the family burial vault beneath the church floor. She argues this underground space fueled Emily's literary obsession with dungeons and graves. Lutz also defends Patrick Brontë against historical claims of severity. 5The Influence of Aunt Branwell and Early Tragedy. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz highlights Aunt Elizabeth Branwell's sacrifice in moving to Haworth to raise the Brontë children, introducing them to cosmopolitan stories. The segment also details the tragic deaths of the eldest sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, from tuberculosis after a harrowing experience at a poorly managed boarding school. 6Imaginary Empires and the Fierce Loyalty of Keeper. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz describes the miniature books the Brontë children created to document their imaginary worlds, Angria and Gondal. The discussion shifts to Emily's domestic life in Haworth, where she balanced household chores with writing. Lutz also recounts Emily's intense bond with her massive, formidable mastiff-mix dog, Keeper. 7Brussels, Poetry, and the Birth of a Unique Voice. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz discusses Charlotte and Emily's education in Brussels, where Emily honed her concise writing style and piano skills. Following their aunt's death, the sisters returned to Haworth and used their inheritance to focus on writing. They compiled their poetry into a volume under male pseudonyms. 8The Bell Brothers and the Collaborative Creation of Novels. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz explains how the sisters published their poetry under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell to avoid gender bias. Despite selling only two copies, they immediately began collaborating on their first novels. Lutz also explores the troubled life of their brother, Branwell. 9The Reclusive Genius of Emily Brontë. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz describes Emily Brontë's writing habits in her small bedroom overlooking a graveyard. Despite her reclusive nature and strong-minded personality, she lived a life filled with "joy and contentment" while crafting Wuthering Heights. Lutz notes that her sisters initially found the dark, violent novel strange. 10The Experimental Haunting of Wuthering Heights. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz explores the Gothic structure and experimental narrative frames of Wuthering Heights. She suggests Heathcliff is an extension of Emily's own fierce imagination. The segment concludes with the tragic deaths of Branwell, Emily, and Anne from tuberculosis, leaving Patrick as the family's sole survivor. 11The Enduring Legacy of the Brontës in Haworth. Guest: Deborah Lutz. Lutz reflects on the Brontës' lasting cultural impact and Haworth's transformation into a major tourist destination. She discusses the critical backlash the novel initially faced for its violence. Despite the tragedy surrounding their lives, the Brontës remain buried beneath the church they once inhabited. 12The FBI, Money Laundering, and the Russian Mob. Guest: Craig Unger. Unger interviews whistleblower Jonathan Buma, a former FBI agent, regarding investigations into Donald Trump's ties to Russian intelligence. He claims Trump Tower served as a "laundromat" for the Russian mafia to clean illicit funds through luxury real estate. Unger questions why the FBI failed to act. 13Political Interference and FBI Counter-Intelligence Failures. Guest: Craig Unger. Unger discusses how investigations into the 2020 election and Rudy Giuliani were allegedly stymied. He notes that Giuliani received payments from Russian oligarchs, potentially compromising the Trump campaign. Unger and Buma explore why major intelligence agencies and the Department of Justice have not pursued these leads. 14The Chronic Failures of the Cuban Regime. Guest: Mary Anastasia O'Grady. O'Grady analyzes Cuba's ongoing economic misery and electricity crises, which the government blames on the U.S. embargo. She references the failed 10-million-ton sugar harvest of 1970 as a symbol of the state's incompetence. The regime maintains power through bitter repression and control over food resources. 15The Distortions of Global Wealth Taxes. Guest: Veronique de Rugy. De Rugy discusses how the UK's tax system discourages international athletes from competing at Wimbledon by taxing their worldwide endorsements. She argues that oppressive global tax schemes, such as California's proposed billionaire tax, often result in reduced economic activity and lower wage growth for middle-class workers. 16One correction folded in: the guest is Mary Anastasia O'Grady (not "Anastasio") in file 15.
Brussels, Poetry, and the Birth of a Unique Voice. 8ANNE BRONTE GRAVE AT SCARBOROUGH

This week on The Mother Daze, we're feeling all the things. With Wyatt graduating and our kids somehow growing up right before our eyes, we found ourselves reflecting on this wild season of life. From starting over after the fires to moving cities (and even countries), we chat about what it's been like watching our kids navigate change, find their people, build friendships, and create a sense of home wherever they land. We talk about the very real parenting urge to swoop in and fix everything for our children, and the beautiful reminder that growth often lives on the other side of discomfort. Sarah chats about her mum's notorious habit of always putting herself last and how it's starting to catch up with her physically (and how many of us mothers are guilty of doing the exact same thing!) There's some women's circle circling, Teresa pulls some witchy cards for the Dazeys, and Sarah shares a few moments where her developing medical mediumship unexpectedly clocks in for work!! Gestational diabetes is one of those topics that every pregnant mama needs to understand way before she ever gets to that 28 week test, whether she thinks it applies to her or not. And I could not be more excited about who I brought in to talk about it today.Bonnie and Karina are midwives in Davis County Utah and two of my favorite people in the birth world. I met them early in my birth work journey and I have never stopped being grateful for it. Bonnie has a background in nutrition and has been in birth work since 2014. Karina has had type one diabetes for over 35 years and lives this every single day. Between the two of them, they know more about gestational diabetes than most providers you will ever sit across from. I have actually told Bonnie that if I ever get pregnant again, I am either flying her out to me or heading to Utah, because these are the women I want in my corner.

Gina (doula/perinatal fitness trainer) and Roxanne (certified nurse midwife) walk through how birth has evolved, from mostly home births with midwives pre-1700s (but high death rates from infection, bleeding, obstructed labor, and blood pressure issues) to increasing hospital-based, physician-led care in the 1800s–1900s. They discuss key shifts like antiseptics, anesthesia (including twilight sleep), antibiotics, transfusions, prenatal care, and safer C-sections—improving survival but often reducing autonomy and satisfaction. They cover the 1970s natural childbirth and feminist movements, and the later push for evidence-based, family-centered care (partners/doulas, skin-to-skin, breastfeeding support, delayed cord clamping, shared decision-making). Their takeaway: modern interventions save lives, but they're tools—not requirements—and blending safety with physiologic support matters.00:00 Welcome to MamasteFit01:02 Birth History Setup02:06 Pre Modern Birth03:21 Why Mortality Was High05:16 Forceps Enter the Scene06:10 Early Medicalization 1700s07:44 Standardized Midwife Training10:22 Modern Obstetrics Begins11:11 Hospitals Take Over Birth12:41 Twilight Sleep Era21:53 Antibiotics and Safer Birth25:59 Routine Interventions Peak29:29 Natural Childbirth Movement32:18 Evidence Based Care Shift34:54 Epidurals And Twilight Sleep35:56 Unmedicated Birth Tools38:03 Stop Romanticizing The Past41:52 Partners Enter The Room43:59 Evidence Based Birth Shift44:52 Modern Practices And Tools50:55 Social Media And Misinformation53:19 Trust Medicine Own Harm59:53 Why Birth Got Safer01:06:36 Balance Safety And Experience01:07:45 Course And Final Wrap————

Inspire entrepreneurs—especially Black women—to pursue business ownership, develop strong business plans, and stay committed to their vision despite barriers. Overall, the interview serves as both a success story and a lesson in entrepreneurship, community impact, and personal transformation. 2. Summary of Key Themes A. Re‑Defining Herself Through Education & Career Changes Tammeca explains why she pursued multiple degrees—from Spelman and Georgia Tech to NYU Stern—and how each phase of her life motivated a new direction. She began in engineering, shifted to business, and ultimately found her passion in wellness. B. The Birth of Harlem Cycle Launched out of personal stress relief and a desire for culturally inclusive fitness spaces. Indoor cycling reminded her of joyful childhood bike rides in Atlanta. She wanted a wellness space where Black people felt seen, represented, and culturally connected—something missing from other cycling studios she attended. C. Building a Community-Centered Fitness Brand Harlem Cycle blends movement, music, and culture, playing the genres she grew up with—reggae, soca, hip‑hop—and fostering a socially connected environment. She stresses that fitness isn’t just physical but also emotional and mental health. D. Entrepreneurship: The Real Story Tammeca self‑financed her business after being denied a bank loan. She built her studio while still working full‑time and caring for a young child. Her first year was grueling—waking up at 5:30am and working until after 9pm daily. She emphasizes the importance of writing a business plan, using realistic projections, and staying true to your vision. E. Mentorship, Representation, and Industry Impact Over 60% of her team began as Harlem Cycle clients she later trained to become instructors. She aims to shift the fitness industry to include more diverse voices and accessible community wellness options. She plans for expansion, opening a third Harlem Cycle location in Newark to serve another community with limited wellness options. 3. Key Takeaways 1. You can redefine yourself at any point in life. “We can always redefine ourselves at any moment in life.” 2. Wellness must address the whole person. “Fitness is not just physical… it’s emotional and mental well‑being.” 3. Create community spaces where people feel represented. Tammeca built Harlem Cycle because she felt isolated in other fitness spaces as the only person of color. She wanted a studio rooted in Black culture and community. 4. Entrepreneurship requires discipline, planning, and sacrifice. “Write out your plan… and stay true to your plan.” “Just because you build it doesn’t mean they’ll come.” 5. Community impact drives her business model. Harlem Cycle isn’t just a workout studio—it's a culturally rooted community center focused on mental, emotional, and physical health. 6. Representation & mentorship matter. “60% of my team started as clients that we trained.” 4. Memorable Quotes Here are the strongest, most quotable lines from Tammeca: On Reinvention “Each time has been a moment in life where I evolved because of a goal I personally wanted.” On Holistic Fitness “Fitness to me is all about how we take care of our bodies—not just our physical body, but our emotional well‑being, our mental well‑being.” On Creating Harlem Cycle “I didn’t want to be the only person of color in the room—again. I wanted a place where my community could be seen.” On Entrepreneurship “Just because you build it doesn’t mean they’ll come… back down those numbers by 90%.” On Community Impact “We’re changing the fitness industry… starting here in Harlem by training our clients to be part of the wellness industry.” On Cultural Integrity “We don’t care about competition here—it’s about community.” #SHMS #STRAW #BESTSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Isaac Butler's phenomenal new book, “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art, and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,” is a detailed examination of the intersection of art and politics in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s — just like Bob Fosse's 1972 film adaptation of the Weimar-set Broadway smash. We discuss both in this week's can't-miss episode!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
A group of dedicated veterinarians joined me to talk about the launch of the Homeopathic Veterinary Teaching Group (HVTG), a new training academy for vets who want to learn and practice homeopathy. We discussed some of the challenges facing the veterinary profession today and how homeopathy has helped many vets find renewed purpose and satisfaction in their work. The conversation also explored HVTG's goal of passing on knowledge through mentorship, hands-on learning, and a strong sense of community. Along the way, we talked about the importance of understanding animals as individuals and how this approach can help vets provide more holistic care. Episode Highlights: 05:27 - The Birth of HVTG 08:59 - Curriculum Development and Teaching Methods 12:23 - The Learning Environment 18:03 - The Impact of In-Person Education 21:01 - Course Structure and Logistics 21:47 - Target Audience for the Course 24:35 - Growing Demand for Natural Solutions 26:37 - Curriculum Highlights 34:28 - Why this course matters for vets today About my Guests: Geoff Johnson is a veterinarian with nearly 40 years of clinical experience and more than 30 years of using homeopathy in practice. After working as a country veterinarian, he discovered homeopathy and became fascinated by its potential to improve animal health, leading him to pursue formal training in Oxford as a veterinary homeopath and later continue his studies in human homeopathy. Throughout his career, Geoff has developed a particular interest in the relationship between physical health, stress, behavior, and individualized patient care. In addition to his clinical work, he is passionate about teaching, lifelong learning, and advancing thoughtful conversations around integrative approaches to veterinary medicine. Emily McAteer is a Dublin-based veterinary surgeon with a special interest in integrative medicine, combining conventional veterinary care with homeopathy to provide individualized, patient-centered treatment. A graduate of University College Dublin, she has more than 20 years of experience using homeopathy in small animal practice and holds the MFVetHom qualification from the Integrative School of Medicine in Bristol. Emily has also trained at the Irish School of Homeopathy and is qualified to treat both animals and people. In addition to her clinical work, she is passionate about teaching, mentorship, and helping build a supportive international community for veterinarians interested in integrative approaches to animal health. Peter Gregory is a veterinary surgeon who discovered homeopathy after qualifying and later built his practice around its use in animal care. He trained in veterinary homeopathy in the UK and has since spent many years working in referral practice, alongside teaching veterinarians in the UK and internationally. With decades of clinical experience, he has also co-authored key texts in veterinary homeopathy and contributed widely to the field. His work focuses on helping vets apply homeopathic principles in practice while encouraging a more thoughtful, holistic approach to animal health. Barbara Jones is a veterinary surgeon with qualifications including BVMS, MRCVS, and VetMFHom, and she has built her career around integrating conventional veterinary medicine with complementary therapies, especially homeopathy. After qualifying in the UK, she went on to study at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and became a member of the Faculty of Homeopathy in 1992. In 1994, she established Oakwood Veterinary Centre, where she combines diagnostics and treatment with a holistic approach that includes homeopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, and herbal medicine. She is also involved in teaching and supporting farmers and veterinary professionals in learning and applying homeopathy in practice. In April 1989, a newspaper clipping about an art exhibit landed in the mailbox of the Rev. Donald Wildmon, the founder of a conservative evangelical group, the American Family Association. Partly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibit included a now-infamous photograph by Andres Serrano that showed a crucifix submerged in Serrano's own urine. Incensed, Wildmon sent a copy of the photo to every member of Congress, setting off a battle led by the Christian right over what contemporary art could be and who should receive federal funding for it. Isaac Butler, an author and cultural historian, walks through this and other pivotal moments in the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s in his new book, “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars.” Butler spoke to the Book Review's editor, Gilbert Cruz, about how these fights unfolded and what they meant for the artists themselves. He sat down to write the book, he said, when “it really felt like the culture wars of the '80s and '90s that I grew up in were repeating again.” Books and plays discussed on this episode: “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,” by Isaac Butler “Measure for Measure,” by William Shakespeare “Transgressions: The Offences of Art,” by Anthony Julius “It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful: How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic,” by Jack Lowery “The Devil Finds Work,” by James Baldwin “Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz,” by Cynthia Carr “Elia Kazan: A Life,” by Elia Kazan “Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews, the Civil War and the Fight to End Slavery,” by Richard Kreitner “The Kindness of Strangers,” by Salka Viertel “The Talmud: A Biography,” by Barry Scott Wimpfheimer “My Last Sigh,” by Luis Buñuel Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review' Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | YouTube | iHeartRadio Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts, and explore everything from politics to pop culture. The Birth of the Continental Army. How did the Second Continental Congress create the Continental Army on June 14, 1775, a full year before the Declaration of Independence? The creation of the Continental Army marked one of the most important turning points of the American Revolution and launched George Washington's leadership before the United States officially existed. Long before the Founding Fathers declared independence, Congress faced an impossible question: How do you fight a war when your country doesn't exist yet? In this episode of America's Founding Series on The P.A.S. Report Podcast, Professor Nick Giordano strips away the textbook myths to reveal the real story behind the birth of the Continental Army. Discover how John Adams engineered one of the most consequential political decisions in American history, why George Washington became the ideal choice to command the new force, and how a collection of local militias helped forge an American identity before America officially existed. This isn't just a story about military history. It's a story about liberty, civic responsibility, self-government, and the moment Americans took ownership of their destiny. What You'll Learn In This Episode: Why the creation of the Continental Army mattered more than many of the famous battles of the American Revolution How John Adams transformed a regional New England conflict into a truly American cause Why George Washington's appointment carried enormous political significance beyond military leadership How the Continental Army forged an American identity before the United States officially existed What modern Americans can learn about liberty, self-government, civic responsibility, and the preservation of freedom As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, this episode explores a forgotten truth: liberty requires responsibility. The men who created the Continental Army understood that freedom cannot survive when citizens refuse to defend it. The question is whether Americans still understand that lesson today. If you value real history and thoughtful analysis, subscribe to The P.A.S. Report Podcast, leave a five-star review, and share this episode with family and friends. A Florida couple has reached a custody agreement with the biological parents of the daughter Tiffany Score gave birth to last December. Score, along with her husband Steven Mills, believed little Shea Score Mills was their biological daughter after they had an Orlando fertility clinic implant one of three embryos they created. The couple, who is white, immediately knew there was a mixup at birth, when the baby was brown and looked nothing like either of them.
