In honor of the life and legacy of Bob Woodson, we are re-airing this special conversation. Bob, Founder and President of the Woodson Center and 1776 Unites, dedicated his life to poverty alleviation and empowering disadvantaged communities to become agents of their own uplift. His decades of service, wisdom, and commitment to helping communities discover their own solutions left a lasting impact on countless lives. Bob Woodson was an influential leader on issues of poverty alleviation and empowering disadvantaged communities to become agents of their own uplift. Woodson was a frequent advisor to local, state and federal government officials as well as business and philanthropic organizations. His social activism dated back to the 1960s, when as a young civil rights activist he developed and coordinated national and local community revitalization programs. During the 1970's he directed the National Urban League's Administration of Justice division. Later he served as a Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. As Founder and President of The Woodson Center, Bob was on a mission to help residents of low-income neighborhoods address the problems of their communities. Bob joins me today to discuss his approach to dealing with race relations in America and what he believes is a huge problem; the disconnection between work and income, in underserved communities. "People are inspired to change and improve and cooperate when you can show them examples of victories that are possible, not always reminding them of injuries to be avoided." - Bob Woodson One of the most powerful metaphors about that makes a difference is that to some on the left, Hank Aaron was the strikeout king. But to some of us who look at the glass as being half full, he was the home run king. It depends upon what your perspective is. - Bob Woodson "You should always look for antibodies. Even in the worst communities, there are healthy elements that I call community antibodies. If you say that 70% of the people in that community are raising children that are dysfunctional, it means 30% or not. You can learn nothing from studying failure except how to create failure." - Bob Woodson This week on The Wow Factor: How Bob's upbringing inspired him to work in Civil Rights The breakdown of the traditional American Family Why you can't define Black America by slavery The importance of looking for the solution to every problem Why you can't judge people by their past When you give freely, don't give with the expectation that you will be thanked Why you must stay faithful to what you do and not be so attached to the outcome of what you're doing Why America is a country of redemption Bob Woodson's Words of Wisdom: When you give freely, don't give with the expectation that you're going to be thanked. Education is a basic foundation for any individual whose goal is to change the way the world sees things, and Carter G. Woodson built one of the strongest foundations of anyone, much less the son of former slaves. Woodson collected advanced degrees the way some people collect coins and stamps, but with a greater purpose, which was to educate the world, especially about the contributions of Black people to society. Almost a century later, Woodson's influence on American history is seen clearly not just during Black History Month, but each and every day.

A Steelers legend is tired of the Aaron Rodgers saga. Rod Woodson doesn't like the ongoing drama have with another former Packers QB – after Brett Favre did the same thing years ago. Woodson also said they should have selected Jaxson Dart in last year's draft instead of Derrick Harmon. Was that a mistake on the Steelers' part? NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson from CBS Sports joined the show. Ryan doesn't think the Steelers made a mistake by not drafting Jaxson Dart last year because they got a good player in Derrick Harmon. He's also not sold that Dart is a big-time QB or even has that in him. The guys asked Ryan about the idea of the Steelers and Carson Beck in the third round, but Ryan believes he will be off the board before pick 100. Ryan said Beck is a better prospect than Will Howard and thinks Mike McCarthy would favor Beck in a battle of the two. Ryan doesn't think you can ever have enough DBs in your locker room, so there's reason why the Steelers are doing homework there. Where do things stand on WR prospects right now? Ryan thinks Antonio Williams from Clemson is a target the Steelers should consider on the second night of the draft. The guys asked Ryan about the visits the Steelers had yesterday. Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I'm RW Estela: Since 1991, I've been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU's longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. When pandemics do not interfere, he does the Triple Crown of Maine open-water ocean swims (Peaks to Portland, Islesboro Crossing, and Nubble Light Challenge) and the Whitewater Downriver Point Series of the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. RW is the father of two and the grandfather of three and lives with his partner Kathleen of 37 years and their two Maine Coons in Orono. Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Jarvis R. Givems, author of I'LL MAKE ME A WORLD: The 100-Year Journey of Black History Month. In the interview, Givens not only discussed the importance of Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month, and other important figures, but also the role of teachers in providing guidance and inspiration for young black students. He also wrote in his book that "preserving the history of black communities and culture is not just the work of historians but of all members of the community. Givens also explained that Woodson "created the weeklong celebration with the explicitly political aims, it's objective being to popularize the study and public commemoration of black life and culture as a culture weight against the anti-black narratives used to justify the violent mistreatment and the second-class citizenship of black people in US society and around the globe."Jarvis R. Connecticut is a small state that has had a huge national impact. In this episode, we celebrate someone that we are proud to say was born in Connecticut and went on to be a pioneering historian in Black history. Dr. Lorenzo Johnston Greene received his BA in from Howard University in 1924, his MA from Columbia University in 1926 and his Ph.D. in 1942. He was born in Ansonia, Connecticut. We can learn more about his family from the 1900 federal census record. His father Willie was born in 1858 in Virginia before the end of slavery, and his mother was born in West Virginia in 1870. Both came to Connecticut and by the time Lorenzo was born in 1899, he had five older brothers and sisters. The census states that both of his parents can read and write and their children are in school. By the time of the 1920 census, Lorenz has two older brothers who work in a brass mill. What made Lorenzo want to go to college and become a historian? When did he work with Dr. Carter Woodson, the "Father of Black History" and what were Greene's own lasting contributions to the study of Black history? Our guest is Dr. Stacey Close, Associate Vice Provost and Vice President of Equity and Diversity at Eastern Connecticut State University. Dr. Close is a co-author of African American Connecticut Explored, published by Wesleyan University Press, and a noted authority on Hartford and the Great Migration. You can learn more about that in GTN episode: #181. Hartford and the Great Migration, 1914-1950. One last thing about Dr. Greene. In the 1930 federal census, he is 31 years old and working for Dr. Woodson as a field representative and research assistant. Greene lists his job as "Historical Investigating Officer" - he had such a strong sense of his mission even as a young man during the depths of the Great Depression. Thank you to Dr. Close. The Deuce's Dynasty: Ranking College Football's Most Legendary Number 2sIn college football, a jersey number is more than just identification; it's a symbol. It can denote a position, a tradition, or, most often, a legacy. Few numbers boast the sheer star power and positional diversity of Number 2. From Heisman winners to defensive legends and unstoppable all-purpose weapons, this digit has been a magnet for generational talent. While names like Cam Newton and Charles Woodson instantly spring to mind, the conversation about the best to ever don the double-deuce must begin with the original electric weapon: David Palmer, aptly nicknamed “The Deuce.”The Explosive Catalyst: David Palmer, The DeuceBefore the era of positionless football became mainstream, there was David Palmer, the human highlight reel for the Alabama Crimson Tide in the early 1990s. Palmer wasn't just a wide receiver; he was an offensive coordinator's dream—a dangerous runner, a reliable pass-catcher, and even a wildcat quarterback before the term existed.Palmer's dominance was immediate and explosive. In only his fourth collegiate game against Vanderbilt, he racked up 212 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, marking his first punt return score of the season. Just two weeks later, against Tulane, he found the end zone three times, highlighted by a breathtaking 69-yard punt return. This sheer, unfiltered explosiveness earned him the moniker "The Deuce" and cemented his status as one of college football's most exciting players of that era. Palmer set an impossibly high standard for anyone wearing the number at Alabama, a tradition that current stars like Ryan Williams continue today. The Heisman Hierarchy and Generational TalentIf Palmer set the bar for versatility, the Heisman winners who followed wearing No. 2 made it untouchable.Charles Woodson (Michigan) remains one of the most unique and historically significant Heisman winners. In 1997, he became the only primarily defensive player to capture the trophy, leveraging his exceptional play as a cornerback, his impact as a wide receiver, and his dazzling skill as a punt returner to lead the Wolverines to a National Championship. Woodson truly defined the term "impact player."A decade later, Cam Newton arrived at Auburn for one of the most dominant single seasons in history (2010). After transferring, Newton became an unstoppable force, combining an elite passing arm with unbelievable power and speed in the running game. He won the Heisman, led the Tigers to an undefeated season, and captured the BCS National Championship, delivering a performance that redefined the dual-threat quarterback position. The third Heisman winner to wear No. 2, Derrick Henry (Alabama), demonstrated unparalleled dominance at running back in 2015. Henry captured the Heisman, Doak Walker, and Maxwell Awards after rushing for an SEC-record 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns, powering the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff National Championship.Versatility Beyond MeasureThe legacy of Number 2 is defined not just by Heisman winners but by elite performers across every position.Defensively, the number has been legendary. Deion Sanders (Florida State) remains arguably the most exciting college defensive back ever, capturing the 1988 Jim Thorpe Award. Mike Doss (Ohio State) stands as one of only eight Buckeyes to earn three-time All-American honors, serving as the defensive anchor for the 2002 National Championship team. More recently, Patrick Surtain (Alabama) secured unanimous All-American status and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award before leading the Tide to a national title in 2021.Then there are the ultimate Swiss Army knives, like Adoree' Jackson (USC), who, like...
The Kansas State football team will have a duo of defensive coordinators heading into the Collin Klein era with the hiring of Marcus Woodson who will be working with the defensive backs as well.
For the past 2 years, you have been hiring about the Convo By Design Icon Registry. My version of a hall of fame. I started this reluctantly. Reluctantly? Yes, for one reason. I have shared my disdain for the click-bait lists that many of the trade pubs and outlets offer. I think it's disingenuous to put designers and architects on a list because there is really no way of valuing one creative over another, especially when these lists often have absolutely no methodology for why someone is chosen. The blank-blank 100, the blank Top 50, 30 Under 30, 40 Under 40, The blank of Design, The blank of the Year… You get me, right? And the last thing I wanted to do was offer up the same thing but on the other hand, this show is entering its 13th year. 2-years ago in the shadow of an incredible year 10, I wanted to celebrate and showcase some of the amazing talent featured on the show, celebrate them and enshrine them for their work, their selfless pursuit of sublime design, giving back to the industry and for the intangibles that make them so special. That really is the criteria for why these incredible creatives are celebrated here. That is the criteria for enshrinement. The Convo By Design Icon Registry is presented by a remarkable partner. A partner who imbues these very criteria into the work they do and why I am so appreciative to Pacific Sales Kitchen & Home, a Best Buy company, for being the presenting partner of the Convo By Design Icon Registry. “The most dangerous person is one who truly believes in himself..." Darren Woodson 3x Super Bowl Champion It's Thanksgiving week and we have a lot to be grateful for Pivot Family and can't celebrate this holiday without talking about gratitude, family and of course football. And when we talk Thanksgiving football- we have to talk Dallas Cowboys. In this episode of The Pivot Podcast, Cowboys star Darren Woodson joins Ryan, Channing, and Fred for a raw, unfiltered conversation that dives deep into the dynasty years in Dallas and the life lessons that shaped him on and off the field. Known as one of the toughest safeties to ever play the game, Woodson pulls back the curtain on what it was really like lining up alongside legends like Deion Sanders, Larry Allen, Michael Irvin. and Troy Aikman during one of the most iconic eras in NFL history. Woodson brings the locker room to life with stories of competing with Irvin's relentless intensity, Aikman's leadership standard, Deion's unmatched swagger, and the brotherhood that held the team together through championship runs. He also shares his firsthand perspective on the infamous Leon Lett Thanksgiving game moment, revealing how it felt on the field, how the team reacted, and why that play became one of the most unforgettable—and teachable—moments in Cowboys history but also a defining moment of who Jimmy Johnson is not just as a coach but a man. He speaks candidly of Jerry Jones and shares insight that we don't see as we often criticize and publicize the way he has built one of the most profound sports organizations. Beyond the highlights and headlines, Woodson opens up about identity, transitions, fatherhood, and building a purpose-driven life after football. From the mental toughness learned on the gridiron to the vulnerability required in the next chapters of his life, this episode shows Darren Woodson as more than a three-time Super Bowl champion—he's a leader still evolving. Authentic, emotional, and full of championship-level storytelling, this conversation is a must-listen for fans of the game and anyone striving to redefine themselves beyond their greatest successes. It's a masterclass in resilience and reinvention from one of the league's all-time great competitors. Have a safe and happy holiday season from our Pivot family to yours, please take a moment to like, comment and hit the subscribe button, we are extremely grateful for your support. Bri Woodson, descendant of Carter G. Woodson (also known as The Father of Black History), sat down with Danielle to discuss how we can each show up in this moment, as Black history is getting erased, racism is on the rise, and fear seems to be a main tactic of this administration. Bri talks about the intersection between racism and mental health, and how we need to change our understanding and treatment of that which is so deeply embedded in the soul of this country. Is it possible that racism changes the makeup of DNA and other physical aspects of human's genetic makeup? Will it even be possible to convince people, in this divisive climate, that racism is something we need to discuss and dismantle on such a more profound level? Bri also discusses how White women, and especially, parents, need to be that much more cognizant of how we are speaking to our kids, and how we are allowing others to speak and behave, just because they are "family." Why is it so important that we stop giving our friends and family a "pass" because they are people in our lives about whom we care? Additionally, she breaks down the real history and celebration behind Juneteenth, and why it is such an important aspects of Black history. This episode is filled with the truth, harsh realizations, and strategies to be better humans who show up for those in need right now, that so many of us need to hear and utilize.Follow Bri at The Controversial Blonde on Instagram and TikTok.
