Screwed Up Comics is a podcast that will be for both veteran and beginner comic fans. If your comic knowledge is encyclopedic or if you’re just curious about comics - this show is for you! Episode archetypes will be: topical discussions, creator spotlights, book club/reviews, recommendations, and the occasional very off topic episode that could cover movies, sports, politics, or anything else in between.
SUC is back after having read Mark Waid's The Flash run, and the comparison I've (strangely) made to Daredevil. I talk about the role Daredevil and The Flash play in the Marvel and DC universes, respectively. Some good ass comics talk in this quickie of an episode!
Remember this thing? I'm back - and I'm here to stay. I've been gone almost a year in an attempt to get my life together. At this point I am alive and wanna keep it that way. This episode is about where I've been, where I'm at, and how comics and action figures helped get me through the past year.
Gang hello - Back with an episode GLORIOUSLY FANBOYING for my favorite comic book writer - Warren Ellis. I discuss items such as: My favorite concepts made staples by Ellis - everything from his obsession with physics to the way his stories are structured; Give a few examples of my favorite works of his; and How his blacklisting is total bullshit These are discussed by, in part, drawing several credible comparisons that are perfectly acceptable social behavior for certain individuals, but when that occurs in this bubble of comic fandom? These things are interpreted differently, and vastly incorrectly, and I clear these hypocrisies up. Lots of this was sort of hitting during the day, and then got riffed on real quick - so let me know if you feel anything was left out! #FreeWarrenEllis As always, a 5 star review is very helpful and appreciated!! Till next time!
Hey everyone - been a LONG time! In this episode, I catch up briefly on where I've been for the past few months, what's going on now, and the things I hope will happen in 2023. Also a few quick rapid fire reviews/catchups on things I've been reading other than Monsters. This will be the second episode of the show that is specific to a specific title, and in this case, I've chosen Monsters by Barry Windsor-Smith. The book is 365 pages, and every panel was...well, guess you'll just have to listen and find out, eh? We get into the book, we get personal, and we get what may some consider as...controversial?! If you like what you hear, drop a quick 5-star review so the show can find its natural, organic audience! Thanks for listening!
Everyone has those characters that they hate to see, in any title, for any reason. That's everyone right? Just me..? No problem! I begin a series of episodes focusing on the important things - hating certain characters to an irrational degree. Do I know all their origins? Do I know all the different takes by creators of them? Have I read their every appearance? Nope. Does that stop me from wanting a blackhole to swallow them up forever? NOPE. My cousin (silently) joins me on this one, so you'll probably hear him burp in the background during the episode. LET THE HATE HATE HATE HATING BEGIN!
Hey hey SUComics gang - tonight I am set up with my gear in the living room with the OG Blade movie from 1998. This is *OBVIOUSLY* the greatest comic book-based movie ever, therefore, debating this is futile. After talking about how incredible the opening scene was on my IG and Twitter (@ComicChives), I couldn't resist firing this film back up for what has to be a 100th+ play. I will be watching the movie, pausing, and recording little segments. This could be a disaster, it could rule - let's find out together, shall we? In the end I thought to myself, "today is a good day, keep that vibe up." And so I wanted to make an episode that felt like a hangout. Hope y'all enjoy. Make sure to give the show a 5-star review!
What's goin on everyone it's good to be back and record an episode. This is the first review episode; also, I kind of show my personality a bit here, which was recommended to me to start doing. This is my first review/title-specific episode, so I hope it's decent and that these types of recordings improve with each time. If you like what you hear, leave a 5-star review so the show hits everyone who wants it
Hey hey! Been gone for a minute but I'm back with a timely topic - Substack! In this episode I discuss how this new medium impacts creators and their specific fans. It is a very interesting and ambitious concept that creators are flocking to in droves, and the reasoning behind that is also discussed. Enjoy the episode and drop that 5-star review if you like the show
Ya mans Chives is headed to Houston's largest comic con - Comicpalooza! This episode is recorded in two chunks - before heading to the con and after coming back from it. I'm excited to get there and report back. Houston comic fans ASSEMBLE.
This episode will venture off the topical discussions into a more focused discussion on the most specific topic to date - the legend Grant Morrison. I am very happy that he will be the focus of the first episode of this type. Hope you enjoy this episode and if so drop that 5-star rating and comment so the show can reach others in the community! That's what it's all about in the end!
This episode gets into the vast amount of stories in the Marvel universe, and how much of it I felt compelled to cover before the major milestone of Hickman's Secret Wars. I believe the necessary amount of continuity is in the eye of the beholder, and that is a major point of focus. If you enjoy the show, drop a 5 star review why! Enjoy the show!
Episode #4 of Screwed Up Comics goes into the business side of the comics hobby. In this part in particular, I discuss how creators taking promotion and marketing of their work into their own hands directly translates to more success for their upcoming release. Several examples are gone through, in terms of creators and promotional methods.
Episode #3 starts with some quick details on the upcoming giveaway before diving into the episode's topic! In this episode, I discuss the good and bad of reimagining existing characters as a means for inclusivity and diversity, as well as when these initiatives are applied to a new character(s).
I plan on doing a series of episodes on speculating, and this is the first episode of that. Lately speculation surrounding comic books has been at highs only seen during the 90's. With several new avenues to sell comics than back in the original bubble, book values have soared to highs that the market can't correct. I talk about the things that are enabling comic speculation and how it is ultimately a downside for the hobby, as well as discuss when/what I enjoy about speculating and when I choose to do it - so it's not an episode made up of entirely trashing the resale market! Episodes are still improving, and editing is difficult for a newcomer - bear with me and I promise things will sound better and better
Hey hey - Thanks for joining the show. The intro episode definitely sounds like the first episode of someone doing a podcast. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy my riffing and continue to come back as the show improves. First episode is mostly about what I hope the show to be, what I don't want it to be, and my journey as a comic fan.
