Welcome to another episode of Las Platicas, a show hosted by Comadres y Comics, where we meet with creators and friends to talk about upcoming projects, events and all-around awesome news in the Latinx comic community. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Abby Rocha. Abby Rocha is a creator from the too-sunny lands of San Diego and has settled in the foggy coastal embrace of the East Bay. They write/illustrate from the intersection of their latinidad, the multifaceted subject of death and the world around them. They've self published and been nationally published, and their art has been shown in galleries and museums. They are currently working on their debut graphic novel, “Two Hearts in Mictlan.” You can often find them dressed in black and communing with cats in the neighborhood with their partner and child. Take this with a grain of salt, but the rumor is that Warner Bros. could actually restore the Snyderverse if the Saudis are involved in its sale to Paramount. Would this actually happen? Well, James Gunn probably wouldn't want to work with the Saudis and/or the Ellisons, and Zack Snyder is reportedly pretty chummy with them already, so... maybe? But would everyone return? Cavill and Gadot are rumored to be locked in, but Ben Affleck is a maybe and Ezra Miller is supposedly out.So I guess we'll see? Let's talk about the future of DC as a whole post WB sale, because things WILL change no matter who buys them.Watch this podcast episode on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify.CLOWNFISH TV is an independent, opinionated news and commentary podcast that covers Entertainment and Tech from a consumer's point of view. When Bryan Hitch took over as artist on WildStorm's low-selling StormWatch title, writer Warren Ellis was inspired to ditch most of the characters and reinvent the book from the ground up. The resulting series, The Authority, pointed the way to the future of mainstream comic books and stands as one of the milestones marking the end of the Iron Age. It's an important and influential comic, so we've invited writer and podcaster Cameron Kunzelman (last heard on our X-Men: The Animated Series episode) back to read the entire Ellis and Hitch run with us. We discuss the advent of “widescreen comics” and what it means for comic books as a medium to adopt a more cinematic storytelling language; the transition from StormWatch's murky politics to the ends-justify-the-means justice of the Authority; and how the run attempts to comment on and close the book on the genre fiction of the 20th century.CONTENT WARNINGS: The plot and story contents of this series prompt discussions of racism, terrorism, colonialism, genocide, sexual violence, and related topics. We also talk at great length about toxic and manipulative patterns of behavior from writer Warren Ellis, as extensively detailed by his accusers at SoManyOfUs.com.Visit RangedTouch.com to listen to the podcasts Cameron co-hosts. You can also check out his book Everything Is Permitted on the Assassin's Creed video game franchise here:https://www.upress.umn.edu/9781517914943/everything-is-permitted/Support the Iron Age of Comics and get access to bonus content at patreon.com/ironageofcomics
Today on the podcast Michael and a very coughy Jong are joined by an og of Comicast lore, David Ramon (longtime listeners may remember the highly touted segment David Does Comics). David jumps on with the guys to discuss the news that Skylar Gisondo will be leading a Jimmy Olsen spinoff series. What do the guys think? What type of tone can we expect now that we know who the creators of the show will be? Is this a TV-MA or TV-14 situation? How does Gorilla Grodd fit into this? The guys answer those questions and more! The trio also dicuss The Wrap's report that Brainiac will be the villain that forces Luthor and Superman to team up, James Gunn saying that Darkseid isn't the big bad, and finally, who's taking up the mantle in future Black Panther films now that Ryan Coogler confirms that he's working on Black Panther 3. Remember the classic holiday film Miracle on 34th Street? There's a point in the movie, after a suggestion by Kris Kringle, where the Macy's employees start instructing customers to go across the street to Gimbel's to purchase gifts at a better price. At first, management is flabbergasted by the suggestion, but then they realize the goodwill they are building with their customers. We reference this movie because last week, Marvel Unlimited sent out emails to its subscribers promoting DC Universe Infinite. Writer-artist Joe Sacco created a new kind of journalism when he combined on-the-ground reportage with painstaking hand-drawn illustration. His award-winning books including Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde brought under-reported stories to new audiences. In his absorbing new book The Once And Future Riot he travels to Uttar Pradesh, India, to explore the causes and consequences of the bitter religious and political violence that consumed the area in the 2010s. He talks to Andrew Harrison about life as a conflict cartoonist, creativity vs A.I., and how “comics journalism” can do things the TV news never can. • Buy The Once And Future Riot through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund The Bunker by earning us a small commission for every sale.
