Comics writer Julio Anta joins Byron on the show to explore his new  Dark Horse Comics project, The Beast of Boriken. Part of  Tiny Onion's True Weird series, this tropical horror story uses the legend of the Chupacabra to address the complex history of colonization, activism, and trauma in Puerto Rico. Julio breaks down his collaboration with artist and Puerto Rica native Daniel Irizarri, and how they blended indigenous Taino culture weaving it with the legend of El Chupacabra and applying that formula to highlight modern-day political struggles. We also discuss his extensive background in the YA and middle-grade graphic novel markets including the June release of his second Hillside Valley graphic novel, Sol Goes For Goal!, and why he believes comics are a unique medium for what he calls Revolutionary Optimism. They kick things off with Strong Bad nostalgia, a mall comic-con story, and comic news covering Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, The Boys, Daredevil, My Adventures with Superman, Batman Beyond, fan-created Batman villains, and DC characters with “wasted potential.” Then they break down recent pulls including The Lost Daughter of Sparta, Ultimate Oz Universe, She-Spawn, Justice League Unlimited, If Destruction Be Our Lot, Inglourious X-Force, Batman, Redcoat, Swamp Thing, and Oddball's Odyssey before debating superhero shows all the way to a final face-off.

We are getting caught up after last week's Book Club discussion, and we are already working on next month's selection of Wonder Woman Historia from DC Comics. Conway was part of the wave of new creators joining comics in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He quickly made his mark, taking over writing chores on Amazing Spider-Man from Stan Lee. Along the way, he helped co-create characters like the Punisher, Firestorm, Power Girl, Ms. Marvel, and many others. Is anyone getting mixed messages from Marvel Comics?
