Comics don't just happen. Artists will them from nothing. As you'll hear from Henry Barajas and Rachel Merrill in this week's podcast, comics arrive at your local comic book shop through tremendous persistence and imagination. The next time you cross your shop's threshold, possibly to grab a copy of Barajas and Merrill's Death to Pachuco, out now in trade paperback from Image Comics, take a moment to thank the makers. Each book on the rack is a tiny miracle. In Death to Pachuco, Barajas and Merrill tap into history, detailing the 1943 Sleepy Lagoon Murder Trial and the Zoot Suit Riots. It's a Chicano noir, heavily inspired by classic Hollywood tales, but springing from a perspective frequently silenced or ignored. Their private eye, Ricardo “Ricky” Tellez, fancies himself a Sherlock Holmes type, complete with a nearly debilitating drug addiction. He's caught in the racial tensions boiling over during wartime Los Angeles, hunting for a killer, while navigating a femme fatale. This week on the podcast, we chat with Barajas and Merrill about balancing fact and fiction, style and reality, and why humanity frequently allows fear steer its actions. We discuss the magnificent amount of will and persistence it took to materialize Death to Pachuco and how it feels to see it collected in trade paperback, finally. Death to Pachuco is written and lettered by Henry Barajas, illustrated by Rachel Merrill, and colored by Lee Loughridge. The book featured several variant covers from folks like Sarah Gordon (see episode art), Tula Lotay, Ben Passmore, David Lapham, and others. Make sure you're following Henry Barajas on BlueSky and Instagram, and Rachel Merrill on BlueSky and Instagram. As someone who works in music, where rhythm, pacing, and emotion are everything, did that background influence how you approached writing Fireborn—especially in terms of momentum, dialogue, or how scenes “flow” on the page? Aaron Hillburg is introduced as a “rich-kid failson,” which is such a loaded archetype—what made him the right entry point for a story that quickly becomes this massive, magical chase? The dragon egg bonding to Aaron is such a striking image—what did you want that relationship to represent, both visually and emotionally, as the series unfolds? Patrick Mulholland's art brings a kinetic, almost explosive energy to the concept—how closely did you collaborate on visual storytelling, especially with something as wild as a floating dragon egg? 11:10 Dark Reign war machine 11:45 Fear Itself This feels like a story about inheritance in more ways than one—family, power, responsibility—what themes were most important for you to explore through Aaron's journey? For readers who haven't touched Lost Fantasy before, how accessible is Fireborn as a jumping-on point, and what kind of experience were you aiming to deliver in issue #1? If Aaron had to survive in New York for 24 hours before the egg bonded to him, what's the most “failson” decision he'd make that would somehow make everything worse?

Jan. 17, 2027 (NOTE: This will not affect Media Mail pricing) Editorial cartoonists on social media What's the deal with Susan MacTaggart? Introducing Dr. Reginald Wigglesby Splash Pages Brad and Dave take a deep dive into splash pages — what they are, how they've traditionally been used, and how they function differently in print versus webcomics. They discuss classic first-page splash images as attention-grabbing devices, as well as the practical reality that they can help creators hit deadlines. Dave shares how he uses splash pages sparingly in Drive to give big moments room to breathe, while Brad explains how he uses them consistently at the start of chapters in Evil Inc, both as storytelling tools and promotional assets. The conversation also explores why two-page splash spreads can struggle online — especially on mobile — and reinforces a key principle: a graphic novel page is not the same as a webcomic update, and each must be designed with its medium in mind. ComicLab Confab (Listener Calls) The guys remind listeners about the ComicLab Confab — their voicemail line where creators can call in with questions, comments, or hot takes. It's an easy, low-pressure way for the community to participate in the show and potentially have their thoughts featured on-air. If you've got something to say about comics, business, or creative life, you can dial ‪(609) 379-3520 — that's (609) DRY-ELB-0. National Cartoonists Society — Columbus, Ohio Brad and Dave highlight the upcoming National Cartoonists Society event in Columbus, Ohio (Aug. 6–8), encouraging cartoonists to attend. They emphasize the value of in-person networking, camaraderie, and professional development that comes from gathering with other working cartoonists — something that can be hard to replicate online. https://nationalcartoonists.com/registration-now-open-80th-reuben-awards-ncs-conference/ USPS Fuel Surcharge Update A practical business note: the USPS fuel surcharge goes into effect April 26 and is expected to run (possibly) through January 17, 2027. This will impact many shipping rates for creators who sell physical goods, though Media Mail remains unaffected. For cartoonists running Kickstarters, online stores, or Patreon rewards, this is a reminder to factor rising shipping costs into pricing and planning. https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0325-usps-announces-transportation-related-time-limited-price-change.htm Editorial Cartoonists on Social Media The conversation touches on how editorial cartoonists are navigating social media — including the challenges of visibility, audience building, and platform changes. Brad and Dave reflect on how shifting algorithms and audience behavior can affect political and commentary-based comics, and what that means for creators trying to get their work seen. What's the Deal with Susan MacTaggart? In a classic ComicLab aside, Brad and Dave riff on the mysterious (and confusing) name “Susan MacTaggart,” using it as an example of how something presented without context can create intrigue — or just bewilderment. It ties back humorously to their broader discussions about clarity, audience expectations, and grabbing attention. Introducing Dr. Reginald Wigglesby The episode also features the introduction of Dr. Reginald Wigglesby — a comedic bit that adds to the show's ongoing tradition of playful world-building and running gags. It's a reminder that even in a craft-focused podcast, humor and character bits are part of what makes ComicLab feel like hanging out with friends. What I Did as a Child – Co robiłem jako dziecko "Co robiłem jako dziecko" means "what I did as a child," and in this nostalgic micro-lesson you'll say it like you're flipping through old photo albums with your Polish grandmother. First you hear the phrase at native speed, then slowed down so you can master the rolling "r" and the soft "dziecko." We drop it into three memory-lane-ready sentences: – "Kiedy byłem mały…" (When I was little…) – "Lubiłem się bawić." (I liked to play.) – "To było dawno temu." (That was a long time ago.) Repeat-along track included—perfect while you reminisce or share your own childhood stories. Challenge: Tell us in the comments what YOU did as a child—reply in Polish and Ania might sing your answer in the next episode     What we discussed:   0:00 Welcome & QR Code 0:45 "Dziecko" - The Polish Word for Child 1:30 Childhood Bedroom Memories 2:30 Sports & Experiments 3:30 School & Newspapers 4:30 University & Opinions 5:30 Wishes & Dashboards 6:30 Stars & Classrooms 7:30 Time & Dance 8:30 Building & Creating 9:30 Television & Media 10:30 Graphs & Grades 11:30 Comics & Parks 12:30 Photos & Memories 13:30 Games & Play 14:30 Suggestions & Ideas 15:30 Early Jobs & Studies 16:30 Army & Activities 17:30 Toys & Cars 18:30 Sunset & Evening Play 19:30 Mom's Voice & Family 20:30 Growing Up & Yesterday 21:30 Fitness & Sports 22:30 Comfort & Balm 23:30 National & Sharing 24:30 Adult Life & Planning 25:30 Vision & Yesterday's Story 26:30 Short Stories & Patches 27:30 Royal Games & Health 28:30 Memories & Reports 29:30 Calls & Moods 30:30 Sports & Chores 31:30 Swimming & Memories 32:30 Web & Changes 33:30 Books & People 34:30 School Initiatives 35:30 Travel & Problems 36:30 Chats & Opinions 37:30 Goals & School Sheets 38:30 Status & Movies 39:30 Platforms & QR Code 40:30 Your Turn to Practice!   English Polish Pronunciation Guide child dziecko dzyeh-tsoh childhood dzieciństwo dzyeh-cheen-stvo memory wspomnienie vspo-mnyeh-nyeh to remember pamiętać pah-myeh-tahch to forget zapomnieć zah-pom-nyehch to play bawić się / grać bah-veech sheh / grahch toy zabawka zah-bahf-kah game gra grah school szkoła shkoh-wah teacher nauczyciel / nauczycielka now-chi-tyel / now-chi-tyel-kah friend przyjaciel / przyjaciółka psi-ya-chyel / psi-ya-choow-kah family rodzina roh-jee-nah mom mama mah-mah dad tata tah-tah brother brat braht sister siostra syoh-strah home dom dohm room pokój poh-kooy bed łóżko woo-shkoh to sleep spać spahch to eat jeść yeshch favorite food ulubione jedzenie oo-loo-byoh-neh yeh-dzeh-nyeh sport sport sport football/soccer piłka nożna peew-kah nozh-nah ping pong ping pong ping pong swimming pływanie pwih-vah-nyeh bicycle rower roh-ver to read czytać chi-tahch book książka kyohnsh-kah comic book komiks koh-meeks TV telewizja teh-leh-veez-yah cartoon bajka bahy-kah video game gra wideo / gra komputerowa grah vyeh-deh-oh / grah kom-poo-teh-roh-vah to sing śpiewać shpyeh-vahch song piosenka pyoh-sen-kah to dance tańczyć tahyn-chich party impreza eem-preh-zah birthday urodziny oo-roh-jee-ni holiday wakacje / ferie vah-kah-tsyeh / feh-ryeh summer lato lah-toh winter zima zee-mah to grow up dorastać doh-rah-stahch adult dorosły / dorosła doh-roh-swi / doh-roh-swah young młody / młoda mwoh-di / mwoh-dah old stary / stara stah-ri / stah-rah yesterday wczoraj fchoh-rah-y today dziś dzeesh tomorrow jutro yoo-troh long ago dawno temu dahv-noh teh-moo always zawsze zahf-sheh never nigdy neeg-di sometimes czasami chah-sah-mee often często chen-stoh
