Tonight's guest, Dan Schmidt, was born and raised in Southern Minnesota. When Dan was growing up there, he had what could very easily be the most frightening Dogman encounter that's ever been shared on the show. You see, when he was 9-years-old, Dan and his cousin spent the night at his grandma and grandpa's farm, during winter break. The encounter happened the first night Dan and his cousin were there. When it happened, Dan was laying on the couch, in the living room and his cousin was laying on a make-shift bed his grandma had made, on the living room floor. Some time between 1 and 2 AM, Dan was awoken by a noise. Dan realized that it was the sound of the latch on the door to the back porch, of the house, being worked. Then, he heard that door being opened. Next, he heard slow, heavy footsteps walking across the back porch toward the back door of the house. When he heard those footsteps coming toward the back door, he looked at the back door. To his dismay, he then saw its doorknob turn and then the back door slowly open. What happened next was much more than most people would ever be able to handle. He watched a Werewolf walk into the house. Friends, let's celebrate. We've made it through another year, and no matter how you felt about the world outside your local comic book shop, you certainly read some great comics. Welcome to our annual award show, The Stampies: Best Comics of 2025. Part One. Every year is a good year for comics. You just have to go out and read them. That's the secret. We try not to imprison ourselves with characters, genres, publishers, or even our preferred tastes. As long as you're only interested in good comics, you'll find them if you read enough, and the brilliant thing about 2025 is that we read a lot, and found so many great comics, but we still didn't read enough to read all the great comics. Thankfully, we sent out the Comic Book Couples Counseling distress call, and a bunch of our friends from across the industry answered. Peppered throughout our Stampies ceremony are our podcaster, journalist, publicist, and creator friends, each offering their favorite comics from 2025. See a list of them below, and make sure you support their work and follow them on socials. As we do every year, we select our favorite comics and then create the Stampies around them. This two-part episode reflects our weird, collective tastes as a couple. Listeners will recognize several of the titles, but hopefully, we've thrown in several surprises, too. You can also find the award categories and (SPOILERS) winners below, listed alongside their timestamps in case you want to hop around or revisit later. For the first time ever, we've created physical Stampy Awards to be delivered to the creators. We're only able to do this thanks to our new sponsor, Global Comix. The all-in-one digital comics platform is currently offfering a great comics bundle when you sign up for their Global Comix Gold program. Make sure you give them a click (more details below), then start browsing their incredible digital comics library. Historically, the celebration of Christmas and Carnival could overlap, and there is some reason to believe that customs associated with the former were inherited by the latter. A clue to this calendrical shift is offered by the Christmas song, “Carol of the Bells,” which uses the melody of an old Ukrainian New Year;s carol, one which dates back to the era in which New Year was celebrated in March (hence the springtime imagery of its original Ukrainian lyrics). Ukrainian postcard commemorating the folk song”Shchedryk” source of “Carol of the Bells” After a brief look at the variable date chosen to celebrate the New Year throughout European history, we take some time to rethink our modern understanding of what constitutes the Christmas season. The common notion that the season ends on December 25 or January 1, possibly including the weeks leading up to those dates, in historical understanding, was reversed, with Dec. 25 representing the start of Christmastide, which at the very least ran until Epiphany (Jan. 6) or Candlemas (Feb. 2). The merger of Christmas and Carnival is not only aided by the historically later end date of Christmastide, but also the variable start date for Carnival. A number of regional dates preferred for those festivities are discussed with Germany’s initiation of festivities on November 11 being the earliest. Another reason to suspect that Carnival inherited some of its customs from Carnival is the carnivalesque quality of the Christmas Feast of Fools celebrated anywhere from Dec. 26 to January 6. The wild, and sometimes dangerous revels celebrated on those days (and discussed in Episode 100) were ended by local bishops at roughly the same time that Carnival celebrations in France and Germany emerged, suggesting re-channeling of anarchic impulses and customs. Our discussion then turns to the Roman New Year, the January Kalends, which likely inspired chaotic elements around the Feast of Fools. Of particular interest here are accounts of celebrants dressing in animal hides and horns. a custom that seems to have survived in certain Carnival traditions, including a number discussed in my Carnival book. One of these, the Kurent of Slovenia, who happens to be rather similar to the Austrian Krampus across the country’s northern border. In Western Bulgaria too, another Carnival figure, the Kuker, in western regions also makes use of animal hides and horns (as well as bells). Bulgaria also provides us with an interesting 20th-century case study of the merger of the traditions of Christmas (or “Surva,” the Bulgarian New Year) merging with springtime fertility customs of Carnival, both strands being associated with the Kuker. We wrap up with a brief look at Slavic celebrations of the Christmas cycle as Koliade (various spellings), a name for Christmastide and the customs associated with it, particularly door-to-door “good luck visits” incorporating short plays and songs, kolyadka in Ukrainian, the original of “Carol of the Bells” (Shchedryk/”Bountiful Evening”) being one of these songs “New Year’s Carols” (Kolędnicy noworoczni) from “A Polish Year in Life, Tradition and Song” (1900). The sources for this show are Mr. Ridenour’s books The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas and A Season of Madness, Fools, Monsters, and Marvels of the Old-World Carnival.

Greg & Tara are BACK to continue their Percy Jackson Season 2 Reaction, Recap, Analysis, Breakdown, & Spoiler Review!! As Season 2 continues adapting The Sea of Monsters, Episode 3 pushes Percy and his friends deeper into danger, expanding the scope of the quest while testing their loyalty, courage, and understanding of the prophecy hanging over them. In this episode, Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell – The Adam Project, Secret Headquarters) continues to struggle with the growing weight of leadership as the quest intensifies and the stakes rise beyond Camp Half-Blood. Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries – Something from Tiffany's, Beast) remains the strategic backbone of the group, forced to make tough calls that blur the line between logic and faith, while Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri – Cheaper by the Dozen, Spin) faces new challenges tied to his role as both protector and seeker within the satyr community. While Disney has kept Episode 3 details tightly under wraps, early previews and Season 2 setup suggest the story leans further into Sea of Monsters mythology, with new mythical threats, dangerous environments, and the lingering tension surrounding Luke Castellan's betrayal and Kronos' growing influence. Fans can also expect more exploration of Percy's powers, sharper banter between the trio, and at least one major encounter that pushes the quest into a more perilous phase — echoing some of the most iconic beats from the book. Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, The Nice Guys) Jim Herzfeld (Meet The Parents/Fockers), Fred Dekker (Preditor), & David Silverman (The Simpsons) reminisce about their college hangout that became the social group that supported their life and art for the rest of their lives. They describe a house full of UCLA film nerds with a 24 hour open house policy. It was young guys finding themselves and their drive and their fun by making a scene in the early 1980's. Movie watching, game playing, movie making, and joking around led to a group of people that has made some of the biggest films of the last 30 years. Bio: JIM HERZFELD is an American film and television screenwriter who has also done work as a television producer. Herzfeld graduated from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) and his earliest TV credit – on the ground breaking “It's Garry Shandling's Show” -- was followed by almost 10 years of writing and producing episodes on dozens of sitcom staffs, including the Fox TV classic "Married... With Children." Herzfeld's earliest feature film work was a writing credit on the cult comedy “Tapeheads“ in 1988. His most successful work was writing the screenplay for the 2000 film” Meet the Parents” as well as writing the story and screenplay for its 2004 sequel “Meet the Fockers.” To date, both those films remain on the list of the 20 Highest Grossest Comedies. More recently, in 2015 his screenplay for “Meet the Parents” was selected by the Writer's Guild of America's as one of the “101 Funniest Screenplays” of all time. Herzfeld was also the writer of the canceled Circle 7 Animation version of Toy Story 3 and has done countless punch-up and rewrites on dozens of big budget comedies and animated films for virtually every major studio. Herzfeld has also guest lectured about screenwriting at several major universities, including NYU, UCLA and AFI along with appearing on writer panels at various film festivals, most notably the Austin Film Festival where Jim was a judge for their Comedy Screenplay Competition. Currently, Herzfeld continues to write and develop comedy screenplays and recently became an advisor for Scripthop, a software startup focused on revolutionizing how screenplays are both presented and circulated throughout the entertainment industry. FRED DEKKER - Pursuing a movie career, he moved to Los Angeles where his fledgling screenwriting efforts led to a Hollywood agent and a job writing Godzilla: King of the Monsters for director Steve Miner. Although the film went unproduced, Dekker provided the story for Miner's 1985 horror-comedy House, starring William Katt (screenplay by Ethan Wiley). The film was recognized by the Fantasporto and the Avoriaz Film Festivals, and spawned several sequels. Dekker made his directorial debut with Night of the Creeps, an homage to B-movies that eventually developed a devoted cult following. He went on to direct another cult favorite, The Monster Squad, co-written with his UCLA friend Shane Black. He subsequently wrote five episodes of Tales From The Crypt, including the first episode, directed by Robert Zemeckis. In 1991, Dekker conceived the Denzel Washington starrer Ricochet and the spy spoof If Looks Could Kill, both for Warner Bros. He then returned to the director's chair for the third RoboCop film, co-written with comic book legend Frank Miller. As a script doctor, Dekker made uncredited contributions to films including Titan A.E. and Lethal Weapon 4. He then served as Consulting Producer and wrote three episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. In 2015, he reteamed with Shane Black on a western TV pilot for Amazon Studios, entitled Edge. The two went on to co-write the 2018 release The Predator, which Black also directed. Dekker's international awards include the Silver Raven from the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film; the Estrella de Fantastico Award from the 2019 Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival; and the 2024 Honorary Time Machine Award (Premi Màquina del Temps) at the Sitges Film Festival for his contributions to horror and fantasy cinema. He is currently developing a true crime limited series for Amazon based on a murder which occurred in his hometown.SHANE BLACK is a writer/director whose writing credits include such films as Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight and The Monster Squad. He began as a director in 2005 with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and receives increasingly strident sequel requests for 2016's The Nice Guys. He is currently writing a spec original and trying to lose some weight by New Years'. Not that he's fat -- he's just old, and being careful.DAVID SILVERMAN After graduating from UCLA in 1983, David Silverman worked as a freelance illustrator and animator until, in 1987, he landed a job animating on The Tracey Ullman Show — where The Simpsons began. Animating on all 48 shorts led to David directing the first shows of The Simpsons. Starting with the Christmas Special in December 1989, and then the premiere episode the following month, David soon became Supervising Animation Director and a producer on The Simpsons. All told, he has directed 24 episodes and has won 4 Emmys along the way. When no one was looking, David snuck away from The Simpsons to work at DreamWorks (The Road to El Dorado – co-director), Pixar (Monsters, Inc. – co-director), and Blue Sky (Ice Age, Robots – writing and boarding). But, he came back to the show full-time at the end of 2003 and directed The Simpsons Movie. In 2012, David directed and co-wrote the short film The Longest Daycare about Maggie Simpson, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. And since the Disney acquisition of The Simpsons (via the purchase of Fox), David has directed 10 Simpsons shorts especially for Disney+, as well as several promotional pieces.Editing Notes: There are many verbal cuts on the show we directed to Dan. Also after the show, Shane Black emailed and ask we cut out this. I say “It's nice your place was a rape free environment” and Shane says something like: “But not rape free for guys,”. He wants his comment cut.
This episode – “Dark Gods of Modernity: Why We Still Need Monsters” – argues that our age is full of monsters, even if we pretend we've outgrown them—and that we actually need them. The episode starts with the old role of monsters: they used to patrol the edges of maps and myths, marking what was dangerous or sacred. Dragons, demons, trickster gods gave shape to fears and taboos; they were ways of saying, “There is something here we don't understand, but it matters.” Modernity claimed to banish them with science and rationalism, yet they've only changed costume. Today's monsters show up as serial killers in prestige TV, pandemics and plagues, rogue AIs, shadowy elites, conspiracy cabals, zombies and apocalypses in endless variations. Even in a secular culture, we keep inventing figures that condense dread, guilt, and awe. The episode's core claim is that monsters are how a society metabolizes what it cannot face directly. Climate change, systemic racism, algorithmic exploitation, ecological collapse—these are slow, sprawling, and hard to narrate. So we displace them into sharper figures: evil billionaires, satanic rings, killer robots, viral hordes. Sometimes those stories illuminate real power dynamics; often they simplify and mislead. Either way, they signal where the pressure is. We also carry personal “dark gods”: intrusive thoughts, addictions, forbidden desires, depressive spirals. Treating them only as malfunctions misses something. Like mythic monsters, they guard thresholds—unresolved grief, disowned anger, unlived capacities. The episode suggests that outright demonization backfires; what we refuse to acknowledge returns in cruder, more destructive form. Rather than trying to erase monsters, we need better ones: images and narratives that help us see genuine dangers (like fossil capital, surveillance, supremacist ideologies) without collapsing into paranoia or purity crusades. Monsters, in this view, are tools: creative, symbolic containers for terror and shadow that can either trap us in fear or guide us toward more honest contact with what's wrong—and what still might be transformed. When she returned to New York, her dream was to be an international model and then go into acting. One day, she quit modeling while in France, and pursued a TV career. After several episodes of Melrose Place and several TV movies, Hudson's big break in television came auditioning for her signature role of "Callisto" on Xena: Warrior Princess. The casting people told her the part was that of a warrior queen, which she thought was great. Her audition consisted of doing a kick and throwing a chakram; having intimidated the crew, she got the part. Hudson attends Xena conventions as a guest of honor. She said her celebrity status surprises even her: when she had a birthday, several hundred fans sent her email messages. Her presence touches so many other people. Joe Betance and Lauri Roggenkamp close out Dragula Titans Season 2 with a full breakdown of the finale episode, reflecting on the season as a whole, revisiting their wildly inaccurate preseason predictions, and unpacking the Boulet Brothers' final decision. From the Four Horsemen floor show to Eva Destruction's controversial win, the ghouls leave no gravestone unturned. Joe and Lauri revisit their Meet the Monsters predictions—and discover just how spectacularly wrong they both were. A breakdown of why Priscilla Chambers, Loris, and Frankie Doom didn't match the season's actual trajectory. Discussion of which monsters were underestimated (Jaharia) and which were overestimated. Analysis of whether the Boulets truly “changed things up” this season—or simply polished the same formula. A candid conversation about self-sabotage, execution vs. concept, and what Dragula actually rewards. Joe and Lauri reflect on whether Dragula winners tend to disappear after taking the crown—and what that means for Titans. The final four monsters were tasked with creating and presenting four looks inspired by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, incorporating horror, filth, and glamour. Joe and Lauri discuss: Which looks felt inspired versus overly literal Execution gaps between concept and performance Why swinging for the fences sometimes pays off—and sometimes doesn't How technical excellence ultimately outweighed ambition in the final judgment Eva Destruction is crowned the winner of Dragula Titans Season 2—but not without debate. Joe and Lauri weigh Eva's consistency against Jaharia's ideas and Abhora's ambition. A deep dive into the cemetery crowning scene, including pacing, visuals, and whether the finale landed emotionally. A larger discussion about Dragula's relationship with its winners—and why victory can sometimes feel like an ending rather than a beginning. As Titans Season 2 comes to a close, Joe and Lauri reflect on what worked, what didn't, and what they hope to see when Dragula returns. While the season delivered strong television, the finale raises lingering questions about risk, creativity, and whether Dragula truly rewards innovation—or simply mastery of its existing rules. The Trump administration has released a new National Security Strategy that is a marked shiftnot only from earlier administrations but also Trump's first term in office. While the new policystatement eschews the goal of global hegemony, it promotes culture war in Europe bypromising support of anti-immigration political parties, economic rivalry in Asia with China, anda renewal of US military hegemony in the Western hemisphere. To survey this document andTrump's often contradictory foreign policy, I spoke to frequent guest of the show StephenWertheim who is American Statecraft senior fellow, Carnegie Endowment for InternationalPeace. Our Sponsors:* Check out Avocado Green Mattress: https://avocadogreenmattress.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

When tonight's guest, Wiley Biro, had his first Dogman Encounter, he was at a boulder field, called “Devil's Half Acre,” close to his parent's home near Hillsborough, New Jersey. That's why he had gone to Devil's Half Acre in the first place. Not long after getting there, something happened that immediately took his mind off of the break-up. The next thing Wiley knew, he was running for his life, or so he thought. What happened to him terrified him more than any experience he's had before that night or since. What happened that night? Historian and journalist Vijay Prashad talks with Steve about why Antonio Gramsci still matters. Listeners to this podcast know that we have a pretty good grasp of the monetary system. But we're constantly working to expand our understanding of the systemic underpinnings of real power. How else will we be able to seize it? For help, we turn to Gramsci. According to Vijay, Gramsci was doing class forensics. His core puzzle was brutal and practical: why did big chunks of Italy's working-class bail on their own unions and parties and drift into fascism? That's the real origin story of “cultural hegemony,” “common sense,” and the whole Gramscian toolbox: figuring out how consent gets manufactured and how counterrevolution recruits. Vijay takes us through Gramsci's political development and his imprisonment under Mussolini, where he wrote his seminal Prison Notebooks. Then they get into Gramsci's key concepts: hegemony (borrowed from Lenin and, per Vijay, more than a “culture theory”), the necessity of a Leninist-type party as the modern Prince, and the need to build alliances to create working-class leadership over society. After taking a hard look at the left in the US, Steve and Vijay discuss the limits of electoral politics and the missing infrastructure for a serious battle of ideas. It's a wide-ranging conversation about class power, organizing, and what it actually takes to change how people understand the world they're living in. Vijay Prashad is the Executive Director of the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research. He is a historian, journalist, and author of forty books, including Washington Bullets: A History of the CIA, Coups, and Assassination; Red Star over the Third World; and The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World. thetricontinental.org @vijayprashad on X

In this bonus episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B takes listeners on a sharp, candid, and thought-provoking ride through some of today’s most contentious cultural conversations. She kicks things off with a fiery rant unpacking the newly released Diddy documentary, breaking down its broader cultural implications and the ongoing public dialogue around accountability, power, and celebrity narratives. From there, Mandii explores the complexities of trauma within relationships, examining how past experiences shape communication, conflict, and emotional safety in ways many people overlook. The episode also dives into tipping culture, dissecting the social expectations and unspoken rules that fuel debates around service, compensation, and fairness. Through every topic, Mandii highlights the nuanced interplay between ignorance and empathy, shedding light on the moral dilemmas people confront in their day-to-day lives—often without even realizing it. In this episode of Sirens, I'm joined by Rachel Corbett, journalist, academic, and author of The Monsters We Make, for a deeply thoughtful conversation about crime, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves about evil.Rachel shares how her own childhood experiences—and the moments that shaped her understanding of violence and fear—ultimately led her down the path of researching crime, criminal behavior, and the FBI's approach to criminal profiling. What began as personal curiosity evolved into years of research that challenge some of the most widely accepted assumptions in true crime. We talk in depth about The Monsters We Make, including what inspired the book, how personal history intersects with academic inquiry, and why criminal profiling may not be the reliable investigative tool pop culture has led us to believe. Rachel breaks down how profiling gained its reputation, where it has fallen short, and why its perceived success often looks very different when examined closely. This episode explores the tension between storytelling and science—and asks hard questions about how myths are created, repeated, and cemented in both law enforcement and media.Find more about Rachel at https://www.rachel-corbett.com/.Mentioned in this episode:Allegedly: POCOGet Allegedly: True Crime From Pontotoc County, OK today. Wiley Brio grew up playing in the woods, as a kid. After he graduated high school, he attended a survival school. He's also worked as a wildland forest firefighter and he worked as an arborist for years. If you're getting the impression that Wiley loves being in the woods, your instincts are serving you well. Due to all the time Wiley has spent in the woods, he's had Sasquatch sightings and some interesting experiences that didn't have him seeing a Sasquatch but they interacted with him, nonetheless. We head to Asia today as I welcome authors Komal Salman and Shaherzaad Laila to the show to discuss their fantastic new book "Heartstrings of the Kyhber - A Collection of Pashto Folktales". This collection of stories has been published in English for the first time thanks to the diligent work of Komal and Shaherzaad in locating, researching and translating these wonderful stories for our enjoyment. Within this carefully curated collection, readers are able to explore themes of love, loss, longing, and honour throughout the cultural ethos of the Pashtuns. Along with their Folkloristan project, Komal and Shaherzaad are bringing these lost tales to a far wider audience and saving them for generations to come! You can find the book here: The Folkloristan website can be found here: Thank you to both Komal and Shaherzaad!
