In February of 2000, tonight's guest, Anita Tallbl, was spending a night out with two friends of hers, Manny and Tess, when she had her first Sasquatch sighting. You see, when Anita had that first sighting, she was sitting in the back of Manny's car, with Tess, about 200 yards from Tess' property. To Anita's surprise, she saw two Sasquatch crossing the road in front of Manny's car. One of the Sasquatch was black and the other one was a brownish/red color. That experience took Anita from having a very mild interest in the Sasquatch phenomenon to being very interested in finding out all she could about them. On tonight's show, Anita will not only share the details of that first sighting, she's going to share the details of other sightings and experiences she's had with them as well. Less than a week ago, tonight's guest, Josh, had a Dogman encounter. He was hunting deer at the time, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in a blind. To get to the blind Josh was sitting in, he had to walk down a narrow path that had heavy brush on either side of it. The area around the blind was choked with trees and brush that made visibility very poor except for the lanes that had been cut through the brush by his dad. Before Josh climbed into his blind that morning, he already knew about Dogmen. Unfortunately, it wasn't long, after he sat down, before he learned more about them. But what exactly is it, does it work, and why is the American public so entranced by it? What do we gain, and endanger, from studying why people commit murder? In The Monsters We Make, author Rachel Corbett explores how criminal profiling became one of society's most seductive and quixotic undertakings through five significant moments in its history. Corbett follows Arthur Conan Doyle through the London alleyways where Jack the Ripper butchered his victims, depicts the tailgate outside of Ted Bundy's execution, and visits the remote Montana cabin where Ted Kaczynski assembled his antiestablishment bombs. Along the way emerge the people who studied and unraveled these cases. We meet self-taught psychologist Henry Murray, who profiled Adolf Hitler at the request of the U.S. government and later profiled his own students―including the future Unabomber―by subjecting them to cruel humiliation experiments. Criminal profiling―the delicate art of collecting and deciphering the psychological “fingerprints” of the monsters among us―holds an almost mythological status in pop culture. But what exactly is it, does it work, and why is the American public so entranced by it? What do we gain, and endanger, from studying why people commit murder? In The Monsters We Make, author Rachel Corbett explores how criminal profiling became one of society's most seductive and quixotic undertakings through five significant moments in its history. Corbett follows Arthur Conan Doyle through the London alleyways where Jack the Ripper butchered his victims, depicts the tailgate outside of Ted Bundy's execution, and visits the remote Montana cabin where Ted Kaczynski assembled his antiestablishment bombs. Along the way emerge the people who studied and unraveled these cases. We meet self-taught psychologist Henry Murray, who profiled Adolf Hitler at the request of the U.S. government and later profiled his own students―including the future Unabomber―by subjecting them to cruel humiliation experiments. We also meet the prominent Yale psychiatrist Dorothy Lewis, who ended up testifying that Bundy was too sick to stand trial. Finally, Corbett takes the story into our own time, explaining the rise of modern “predictive policing” policies through a study of one Florida family that the analytics targeted―to devastating effects. With narrative intrigue and deft research, Corbett delves deep into the mythology and reality of criminal profilers, revealing how thin the line can be separating those who do harm and those who claim to stop it. In May of 2023, Crystal was sitting at a traffic light, near a well-known landmark in Pennsylvania, when she had a Sasquatch sighting. The landmark is called Horseshoe Curve. Horseshoe Curve is a winding series of curves, bridges, and tunnels that a railroad track winds through and over, near Altoona, Pennsylvania. The disappearance of and tragic suicide of James Dallas Egbert III thrust D&D into the headlines and craven opportunists and sensational headlines ignored all the factors that drove him to suicide and placed the blame squarely at D&D, the one thing in his life that brought him joy and provided an escape from the pressures of being a child prodigy. His story informed Rona Jaffe's book, Mazes and Monsters, which led to the rapid development of this TV movie also starring Chris Makepeace and Wendy Crewson.The story concerns four friends at university who play Mazes and Monsters, the legally distinct dungeon crawler role playing game that causes one player to lose his shit and fall into a psychotic delirium which leads him to murder, madness, and suicide. It is, without question, one of the most toxic movies we've ever seen with a message that seems to be: under no circumstances are you to use your imaginations. You should be thinking about a sensible career now.
