Don Niesen has lived in Central Wisconsin for about 25 years now. He describes Central Wisconsin as being a totally different world from where he grew up in Racine, Wisconsin. After moving to Central Wisconsin, he's had multiple encounters with various types of wildlife, but none of those encounters moved the needle for Don nearly as much as an encounter he had while he was driving to his parent's house, one evening. As he was driving down a rural section of highway, heading to their house, he was on the lookout for deer. Deer-related car crashes are a big problem in that area. All of a sudden, up ahead, he could see a large, black figure, on the side of the road, pulling at something in the ditch. At first, Don thought it was a bear. Then, it did something no bear could do and at that moment, Don's jaw dropped. Jessie Reyez is a singer and songwriter originally from Toronto. She's won two of Canada's Juno awards, and she's been nominated for a Grammy. In addition to writing her own music, Jessie's been a songwriter on tracks by Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, Eminem, and many others. You're probably aware that there are songwriters and producers whose names you'll find over and over again in the credits for big hits; Jessie is one of them. But for this episode, I talked to her about her own song "Goliath." And the day that she wrote that song, she happened to be in the studio with a bunch of other songwriters and producers. So I also talked to Jordan and Stefan Johnson, from the production team Monsters & Strangerz, and Jeff Gitelman, AKA Gitty. Between the three of them, their credits also include songs by Selena Gomez, Maroon 5, Alicia Keys, Mac Miller, and again, tons more.When a group like this gets together to write music, they don't always know if they're going to be making a song that's going to get recorded and released by an artist somewhere down the line, or if the song's going to get recorded at all. Mark was featured on Episode 615, and on that show he told us about several encounters he's had with what he and his friends call a Werewolf. The first week of December isn't just for cozy rom-coms and twinkling lights. It slipped quietly into limited December release but later clawed out a cult following on home video and streaming thanks to its gritty, regional DIY vibe.Then we turn back the clock to House of Dracula (1945), one of Universal's last serious monster mash-ups. Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's monster all converge on a tormented doctor who thinks he can “cure” them — and instead gives us a fog-drenched fever dream of capes, neck bolts, and mad science that feels tailor-made for chilly December nights.Our Deep Cut Spotlight goes to Girls Nite Out (1982), a campus slasher originally released as The Scaremaker. A college basketball win kicks off an all-night scavenger hunt, while a killer in the school's bear mascot costume stalks the grounds with steak knives strapped to its paws. It's pure early-'80s slasher energy — dorm drama, campus radio, locker-room stalking — that barely made a ripple in theaters but was rescued by VHS and, eventually, a boutique Blu-ray restoration.We also roll through a Birthday Roll for horror heavy hitters born this week — from Sean S.
