This week on Collecting Issues, we're diving headfirst into the dense, brutal, and brilliant world of 20th Century Men, the six-issue epic from Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, and Image Comics. It's an alternate history where the Cold War got much, much hotter, fought with super-soldiers, giant mechs, and broken ideals in the mountains of Afghanistan.WARNING: This is a full-spoiler discussion! We highly recommend you read 20th Century Men #1-6 before listening. Go on, get out of here! Scram! Taste the wilderness... and then come back for the listens.Join us as we unpack this "impenetrable but so worth it" modern classic. We dissect Deniz Camp's complex, non-linear narrative that jumps through time and perspectives, comparing his style to legends like Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, and Grant Morrison. We also explore Stipan Morian's stunningly varied—and sometimes jarring—artwork, from Frank Frazetta-esque battle scenes to surreal, Bill Plympton-inspired visuals. Is this the best comic of 2025? Is it a spiritual successor to Watchmen? And after all the propaganda, war crimes, and failed utopias, we ask the eternal question: War, huh? What is it good for?Tune in to hear our thoughts on:The Unholy Trinity: A deep dive into the core characters: the crumbling Soviet ideal of The Iron Star, the brutal American imperialism of President Goode, and the human cost embodied by Azra.Artistic Chaos: Why Stipan Morian's shifting art styles are both the comic's greatest strength and its most challenging feature.Deconstructing History: How the comic uses superheroes to explore the real-world horrors and myth-making of the Soviet-Afghan War.Legendary Influences: We discuss the heavy shades of Planetary, The Authority, and Watchmen that run through this series. The Best and Worst of Humanity: From the terrifying super-soldier Six Bill to the tragic journalist Kyril, we break down the unforgettable supporting cast.If you love politically charged, artistically ambitious comics that challenge you at every turn, this is an episode you can't afford to miss.Time Stamps:00:00 Introduction to 20th Century Men00:49 Comic Book Spoilers Ahead!02:46 The Complexity of War in Comics12:07 Art and Storytelling in 20th Century Men16:32 Character Analysis: Heroes and Anti-Heroes27:37 The Symbolism of the Collected Man33:56 Side Stories and Paradise34:10 Azra's Practical Paradise34:56 John Rambo's Disruption35:04 Thomas Goode's American Supremacy36:09 Time Jumps and Narrative Techniques39:13 Art and Visuals in Comics43:15 Character Perspectives and Artistic Styles50:54 The Human Toll of War55:41 Modern Political Crises and Myth Making01:07:54 Spooky Season RecommendationsFollow the Podcast:Join the Discord and read alongRead Our SubstackFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TiktokWatch us on Youtube Hosted on Acast. This week on Men of Steel, Case and Jmike are joined by writer and critic Jesse Fresco to dig into the early 2000s series Cla$$War. We unpack the political fury, superhero deconstruction, and lasting relevance of this overlooked gem from the Bush-era boom in gritty, socially charged comics. #MenOfSteelPod #Cla$$War #RobWilliams #SupermanAdjacent #JesseFresco #ComicsPodcast   Support us on Patreon! patreon.com/CertainPOVMedia   Men of Steel Full Episode Originally aired: August 15, 2025 Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Scored by Geoff Moonen   Certain Point Of View is a podcast network brining you all sorts of nerdy goodness! From Star Wars role playing, to Disney day dreaming, to video game love, we've got the show for you!   Learn more on our website: https://www.certainpov.com Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/wcHHer4   Overview Class War comic serves as a political commentary on post-9/11 America, initially conceived as a 12-issue series but only 6 issues were published between 2002 and 2004. Writer Rob Williams influenced by Bill Hicks and Marvel's Miracle Man, blending humor with serious themes of government superhero programs. Characters feature a Superman-like hero and an Enola Gay team reflecting various archetypes, but backstory is minimal focusing more on action. The commentary emphasizes American superheroes as 'deterrents' entangled in corruption and drug operations rather than showcasing true class conflict. Artwork utilized innovative computer coloring for the early 2000s, with notable scenes praised for their intensity and execution. The series is linked to broader cultural events, including the Patriot Act and militarized entertainment, creating a lasting impact on the genre. Story arcs reveal escalating tensions, ending ambiguously without showing direct conflict or resolution in the finale. Hosts reflect on the comic's themes feeling 'adolescent' today, yet resonate with current events like rising political tensions and violence. Class War recommended alongside classics like The Authority and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, highlighted for its unfinished nature and mystique. The discussion underscores a shift in superhero portrayals, questioning the effectiveness of traditional heroes in the current socio-political landscape.   Notes ️ Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 09:36) Discussion of Class War comic as political commentary on post-9/11 America, described as 'what if Superman was pissed off about 9/11'. Jesse Fresco returns after Jaguar Sharks podcast ended in January, currently working on a novel after crossing 200 pages. Class War intended as 12-issue series but only 6 issues published - first 3 in 2002, final 3 in 2004 by Com X publisher. Notable art style change between Trevor Harrison (issues 1-3) and Travel Foreman (issues 4-6), both considered high quality for indie publication. Historical Context and Influences (09:36 - 18:49) Comic written before 9/11 but published after, coincidentally capturing post-9/11 American sentiment perfectly. Received major attention from Wizard magazine and early comic websites despite being small indie publication. Writer Rob Williams heavily influenced by comedian Bill Hicks, directly copying Kennedy assassination joke in comic. Williams cited Marvel Man/Miracle Man as major influence, both featuring government superhero programs with Nazi scientist connections. ‍️ Character Analysis and Comic Structure (18:49 - 27:56) Superman-type character design with mostly white bodysuit, blue stripe, and star pattern - described as 'patriotic Apollo'. Minimal backstory provided beyond brief flashback showing protagonist's brother died of heroin overdose. Enola Gay superhero team includes The American, Heavyweight (Luke Cage-type), Icon (Wonder Woman analog), and Confusion (psychic character). ️ Political Commentary and Themes (27:56 - 38:02) Reveals American superheroes used as 'deterrents' rather than weapons, involved in drug trafficking operations. Despite title 'Class War,' actual class conflict rarely shown - more focused on government corruption than economic inequality. Problematic portrayal of Black character written by British creators, described as 'Mike Tyson as super soldier'. Art and Production Quality (38:02 - 48:12) Utilized cutting-edge computer coloring and gradients that were revolutionary for early 2000s comics. Heavyweight vs American battle particularly praised, featuring brutal jaw-punching scene later parodied by Garth Ennis. Com X publisher folded after initial run, Image Comics later acquired reprint rights. Cultural Impact and Comparisons (48:12 - 58:18) Frequently compared to Warren Ellis's Authority series despite Williams claiming unfamiliarity. Influenced Garth Ennis's The Boys, Warren Ellis's Black Summer, and Mark Millar's War Heroes. Part of broader cultural shift including 'freedom fries,' Patriot Act, and militarized entertainment. Story Structure Analysis (58:19 - 01:08:43) Issue 1 - Superman burns 'LIAR' into President's forehead; Issue 2 - Heavyweight fight; Issue 3 - Bridge episode; Issues 4-6 - Government conspiracy revelation. Series ends with American and Isaac preparing for civil war, never showing actual conflict or resolution. Heavyweight confirmed killed by shield weapon, Jefferson transforms into monster. ️ Modern Relevance Discussion (01:08:44 - 01:18:51) Comic feels 'adolescent' and 'naive' when read today, but captured appropriate anger for its time. Hosts discuss how recent events (CEO shooting, political tensions) make comic's themes more relevant. Question whether Superman-type heroes work in current political climate versus Punisher-style vigilantes. Conclusion and Recommendations (01:18:52 - 01:25:43) Recommended alongside The Authority, Garth Ennis's 303, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Better remembered as unfinished work with mystique than potentially disappointing completion. Plugs for CPOV Media Patreon, Movie Struck podcast, and Discord community.

Sydney Film Festival Interview: Ellis Park director Justin Kurzel on being in the orbit of Warren Ellis

Director Justin Kurzel has crafted a filmography built on exploring the impact of trauma and violence on a nation. Whether it be his excoriating debut film Snowtown or the acts of cautionary storytelling with Nitram and The Order, Kurzel's work questions how violence and trauma lingers in our bodies, our minds, and in our lands. That's a notion that he explores with impressive strength with his first foray into documentary filmmaking, Ellis Park. There's catharsis in Ellis Park, partially because of Warren Ellis and his healing violin, but – as the man says himself – his presence is minimal compared to the presence of Femke and the conservationists. Yet, when paired with Kurzel and editor Nick Fenton, they collectively bring light to a horrifying trade that scars the environment. I'm shaken by Ellis Park because of its presentation of trauma, but equally so for its depiction of empathy, consideration, and support. This is, oddly, my first time talking to Justin Kurzel. Having listened to and read countless interviews by him, I was aware that I would be engaging with someone who is a deeply empathetic soul, yet I was still left disarmed by his connection to his openness about his connection to his work, his family, and to the art of cinema. To support the film, Warren Ellis and Justin Kurzel will be running Q&A sessions around the nation. All of the details are in the show notes, but make sure to pick up tickets in advance when the film kicks off with a virtual Q&A with Warren Ellis at Perth's Luna Leederville cinemas on 5 June, concluding with a Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney exclusive event on 8 June at the State Theatre. Ellis Park then releases wide across Australia on 12 June 2025.The Ellis Park sanctuary is part of the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, a non-government, non-profit organisation that was established in 2004 to protect Indonesian wildlife, with a focusing on animal cruelty and rescuing animals from the noxious illegal animal trade network.

To support the organisation, visit EllisPark.org.For the month of June 2025, every dollar from Patreon will be sent as a donation to Ellis Park sanctuary, so please consider joining and supporting the Curb and the sanctuary.Visit Patreon.com/thecurbau, where you can support our work from as little as $1 a month. On the afternoon of Thursday, September 17, 2009, I interviewed Nick Cave in (what I recall was) the Park Hyatt's restaurant located in the Yorkville area of Toronto, Ontario. The occasion was to discuss his then new novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, and we also covered his work with Warren Ellis and the filmmaker John Hillcoat to score the film, The Road, why his new novel's depiction of sexuality was revealing for both men and women, the marvels of emerging app technology and Apple's fledgling iPhone, compartmentalizing his songwriting and literary work and heading to an office every day to get those things done, and other subjects as well. This interview was originally broadcast on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show! on November 11, 2009. See Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on their Wild God Tour. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss.  “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades.  Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands.  We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Banging our own drum for a moment, we've just been named as one of the top Australian Music Podcasts by monitoring service, Feedspot, which compiles the most comprehensive list of Australian Music Podcasts on the web. Great subjects.  Great episode.  Enjoy.  References:  Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith, Andrew Loog Oldham, Sister Morphine, Girl on a Motorcycle, Samuel Beckett, homelessness, Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, “The Memory Remains”, Metallica, Lars Ulrich, Warren Ellis, She Walks in Beauty, Graham Coxon, Blur, TOTO, “Africa”, “Hold The Line”, "Rosanna”, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Listen to Before You Die,  Jim Morrison, oil shortage – 70's, Robert Mapplethorpe, Allen Lanier, Blue Öyster Cult, Tom Verlaine, Television, "Break It Up",  John Cale, “Gloria”, Van Morrison, “Marquee Moon”, “Land (Horses)”, “Radio Ethiopia”, “Wave”, “Easter”, “Because the Night”, Siouxsie Sioux, Siouxsie & The Banshees, R.E.M.,  Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Morrissey, Johnny Marr,  Courtney Love, Hole, PJ Harvey Episode playlistHorsesBroken EnglishMarianne Faithfull - Series 3, Episode 14

In episode 15 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Ajay, Isi, and Joseph explore vampires in media, across genre and time! Welcoming back Joseph after a few episodes away, the episode kicks off with a games roundtable on Monster Hunter: Wilds (Capcom, 2025) and Pentiment (Obsidian, 2022), among other things. Then the group quickly dives into all things vampire. From Capital to Castelvania, the conversation analyzes the psychosexual, political economic, Orientalist, literary, genre, social, and even epidemiological metaphors, allegories, and tropes that haunt vampire stories and have made the figure of the vampire of such perennial—if shifting—fascination. How have vampire stories changed over time? Why do vampire stories shift and blur genre and valence? Why is the vampire such a perennial stand-in, across so many fields, often at the same time? Objects in consideration include: Carmilla (Sheridan Le Fanu, 1872), Dracula (Bram Stoker, 1897), Interview with the Vampire (novel: Anne Rice, 1976; TV adaptation: Rolin Jones, 2022-present; film: Neil Jordan, 1994), The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches (Anne Rice), Nosferatu (F.W. Munrau, 1922), Nosferatu (Robert Eggers, 2024), A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Joss Whedon, 1997-2003), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami, 1997), Castlevania (anime, Warren Ellis, 1997-2021), Castlevania: Nocturne (anime, Clive Bradley, 2023-present), True Blood (TV series, Alan Ball, 2008-2014), The Twilight Saga (films 2008-2012, based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer), Midnight Mass, What We Do In The Shadows, and many more! Discover how the erotic, the economic, the exotic and even the epidemic all collide in the tragedies, comedies, horrors, nightmares, and fantasies that prove the vampire is a potent if changing symbol for fears, desires, and delirium.

Neil Gaiman's career seems very DONE at the moment, after several women came out and accused him of some really nasty stuff. Now even Dark Horse Comics is severing ties with the highly influential comic book creator and author. We talk about the situation and how the comic book media seemingly turned a blind eye to him -- and others -- because they were part of the group. Neil Gaiman, a vocal advocate for cancel culture, faces allegations of sexual assault and non-consensual activity with multiple women, which he denies while admitting to being emotionally unavailable and sexually available. The comic book industry is turning on Gaiman due to the severity and mainstream media attention of the allegations, marking a significant departure from their usual damage control for problematic creators. Inconsistent enforcement of standards in the industry sees male creators like Gaiman and Warren Ellis facing severe consequences, while female creators are protected despite allegations of misconduct. The industry has a history of protecting problematic creators, including those accused of taking advantage of younger women, badgering colleagues, and facing allegations of misogyny, racism, and embezzlement. Gaiman's past behavior of smacking down critics lwas previously cheered on by the industry, now facing criticism for their selective enforcement of standards. The comic book industry's culture of protectionism and selective enforcement is driving talent away and creating a toxic environment unattractive to potential creators and readers.

EPISODE 291 - We take a break from our regular seasons to pay tribute to two great comics artists who passed away recently: John Casasdy and Karl Moline. Cassady is probably best known for his stunning work on Planetary (with writer Warren Ellis) and Astonishing X-Men. But also -- everything he drew was magic. Moline was a bit less known, but made a huge impact with his stellar work on The Fray, Route 666 and much else. Both of them are gone too soon.  On cheerier subjects, we catch up on our mailbag in which we learn about some mistakes we (Will) made and that some people agreed with Kevin's opinions on Ultimate Spider-Man!
