The whole crew from is all together in person for an expansive deep dive into the cultural touchstones that shaped a generation. In this episode, we move beyond surface-level takes to dissect the complex legacy of Eddie Murphy's iconic 1982–1992 film run, specifically examining Arsenio Hall's crucial role in sustaining Murphy's momentum during that era. We also turn up the heat on our recurring music debates. We face the tough questions: Does Ludacris have a true "classic" album, and how do the legendary discographies of Toni Braxton and Donell Jones stack up against one another? We also pay respects to the 30-year legacy of UGK's Ridin Dirty, analyzing how Bun B and Pimp C fundamentally shifted the trajectory of Southern hip-hop. Beyond the music, we tackle the heavy hitters of pop culture—from the mysterious "Oscar Curse" that haunts award-winning actors to the ongoing discourse surrounding the need for a unified Juneteenth anthem. Plus, we discuss the A Different World reboot and the evolving struggle between maintaining celebrity privacy in the age of social media. 0:00 I Only Listen to 90s Music Intro 0:09 Cultural Significance and Costs of Prom Celebrations 3:44 Nostalgic Reflections on Music and Memories from the 2000s 7:12 Eddie Murphy's Career and Arsenio Hall's Role in Saving Coming to America 19:18 Rest in Peace to Peabo Bryson and his many slept on hits 25:14 Whtiney Houston and The Making of Heartbreak Hotel 29:08 TLC, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Nostalgia, and Impact of 90s Hip-Hop and R&B Soundtracks 33:47 Is Ludcaris really slept on as a rapper? 39:16 LA Reid says the best Laface album is Donell Jones. Jim Lebenthal, Chief Market Strategist at Cerity Partners, joins Travis to share lessons from more than 25 years of managing investment portfolios and advising clients through every type of market environment. A former U.S. Navy submarine officer and regular CNBC contributor, Jim brings a unique perspective on investing, discipline, risk management, and human behavior. Drawing from his new book, How to Ride the Subway, he explains why successful investing often comes down to patience, trust, and resisting the urge to outsmart the market. On this episode we talk about: How Jim's early experiences investing shaped his career in wealth management Lessons learned from serving as a nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy Why trust, empathy, and communication are essential in financial advising The dangers of market timing, day trading, and speculative investing Current market conditions, inflation concerns, and the future of major AI-driven IPOs Top 3 Takeaways Long-term investing consistently outperforms attempts to time the market, and missing just a handful of the market's best days can dramatically reduce returns. Successful financial advisors build trust through empathy, honesty, and consistent communication—not just investment performance. Speculation and gambling often masquerade as investing, but true wealth creation comes from patience, discipline, and owning quality assets over time. This week, we discuss rising inflation, the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting, and the much anticipated SpaceX initial public offering. Consumer prices continued to accelerate in May, with headline CPI rising 4.2% from a year earlier and core CPI increasing 2.9%. Alternative measures of inflation, including median, trimmed mean, and sticky CPI, also pointed to broadening price pressures. Producer prices rose at their fastest pace since 2022, prompting economists to revise their forecasts for the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, higher. The renewed inflationary pressure complicates the outlook for monetary policy. With inflation moving further from the Federal Reserve's target, policymakers may find it increasingly difficult to justify lower interest rates and could instead be forced to maintain or even tighten policy. We examine the forces shaping the inflation outlook and discuss what investors should expect from the next FOMC meeting under the leadership of Kevin Warsh. We also turn to the SpaceX initial public offering and the broader state of financial markets. Investor enthusiasm for high growth companies remains intense, even as SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI continue to generate substantial losses. The willingness of investors to assign extraordinary valuations to unprofitable businesses evokes uncomfortable comparisons with the technology boom of the late 1990s.

Rumours continue to swirl that Mike Babcock could be the next head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, a surprising development given his recent comments about being retired and the controversy surrounding his exits from Toronto and Columbus. The belief is that key Oilers leaders, including Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman, may have supported the idea, with Edmonton seemingly accepting that Bruce Cassidy is no longer a realistic option. In Toronto, Joe Pavelski has emerged as a potential coaching candidate, with comparisons being drawn to Martin St. Louis' successful jump behind the bench in Montreal, although the Leafs would be attempting the experiment from a far different competitive position. Meanwhile, frustration has boiled over in Detroit as Dylan Larkin has reportedly requested a trade, providing a three-team wish list of Florida, Vegas and Minnesota after years of playoff disappointment and another painful late-season collapse. On the ice, the Stanley Cup Final continues to deliver incredible drama, highlighted by Game 3 in which Carolina fell behind 4-0 before mounting a remarkable comeback to force overtime, all while maintaining its composure through the adversity. Mitch Marner stole the spotlight early with a natural hat trick and 10-shot performance that showcased a rarely seen shooter's mentality, though his heroics were ultimately overshadowed by the game's wild momentum swings and Vegas' eventual victory. Plus, who starts in goal for the Canes in a pivotal Game 4?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Subscribe to our YouTube channel On our political radar this week… Donald Trump says he's getting bored with his war, doesn't care about the mid-terms … but is laser focused on what matters: his reflecting pond renovation, diverting money from national parks for his D.C. cleanup, the Arc ‘d Trump, taking over DC golf courses, the UFC version of the ancient gladiator battles to the death, and reminding us daily that he's passed a dementia screening test four times. His latest middle finger to the nation: suggesting that the Las Vegas-style Fight Club arena on what used to be the White House lawn become a permanent part of the landscape. Vegas has the Dome and Elvis Wedding chapel; the home of Presidents, if Trump has his way, will have its own dome and a massive wedding reception hall. And it's being reported that Trump is looting money from National Parks maintenance to pay for his July 4 fireworks show, the Reflecting Pool, a White House helipad and DC cleanup projects. He'll burn up 1.6-million dollars blowing up stuff on the 4th … even as he burns up billions every week blowing up stuff in Iran. In an administration populated by the absolutely worst cabinet in American history, Trump manages to lower the bar even further with the appointment of Michigander housing developer and certified Trump suck-up Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, a job for which he has absolutely no qualifications. Actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski … a.k.a. Jason Bourne and Jack Ryan … would be more qualified. Adding the the Bad Cabinet Blues: the new director of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullins, says as far as he's concerned following court orders is optional. Michigan Democrats are optimistic after making the case to the national party that Michigan should be in the first tier of 2028 presidential primaries. The state party has also rejected appeals related to vote counting in the April endorsement convention. Will the dispute extend to the official nominating convention in August? The state House has turned down a Republican-drafted constitutional amendment which would make all university boards and the State Board of Education gubernatorial appointed bodies instead of elected. Speaker Matt Hall didn't bother to talk with Democrats before putting the measure up for a vote. With a two-thirds vote needed to pass, it didn't come close to adoption, but could be revived for the November election. We are just 50 days away from the start of early voting in Michigan. The four races to watch: the 3-way Republican contest for the opportunity to battle Jocelyn Benson for Governor; the 3-way Democratic contest to battle Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate; and multi-candidate Democratic primaries for Congressional seats based in Lansing and Macomb County. Speculation has begun over who may be in the running for President of Michigan State University in the wake of last week's departure of Kevin Guskiewicz. Will it be a relatively unknown academic, or a high-powered retired politician? There's precedent for both routes…although the highest profile possibility, Gretchen Whitmer, has already announced she is not interested in the gig. Republicans in Congress are starting to push back on Trump outrages – the House passing a measure to stop Trump's Middle East war, Senators stripping the one-billion-dollar subsidy for his ballroom from the DHS budget, and both chambers primed to outlaw efforts to revive the $1.8-billion slush fund for rewarding January 6 rioters and other Trump fans. It's interesting that congressional Republicans only started to show signs of life after candidate filing deadlines. Michigan Congressman Tom Barrett, who no longer faces the possibility of a primary challenge, was one of four Republicans voting this week to end the Iran War. The political threat to non-compliant Republicans for pushing back against Great Leader comes as doubts about Trump's mental and physical health grow. His third physical examination since taking office coupled with an incomplete post-exam report on what the doctors learned, his reduced work schedule, the cankles and bruising – have increased the speculation. It sure looks like both his political and mental powers are in decline. This week's best political giggle: an AI doctored photo of Senate candidate Mike Rogers, turning his relatively fit 63-year-old body into a modern-day Charles Atlas. What the heck – it's easier than hours in the gym, or even going on Ozempic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Introducing our new podcast! The American consumer is being misread. Surveys say people are panicking, but their behavior tells a completely different story. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we take a page out of The Pirate Street Journal, as Christopher Lochhead, Eddie Yoon, and Bri Clark broke down three forces reshaping the economy through a category design lens. From historic lows in consumer confidence to AI-generated buyers to an entire generation betting on prediction markets, the picture is not one of collapse. It is one of reinvention. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Record Low Consumer Sentiment Is a Category Creation Engine The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 44.8 in May, the lowest reading ever recorded, following what was already a record low in April. Yet unemployment is near zero, GDP is growing, and the stock market keeps hitting new highs. The numbers do not add up because the survey is measuring something different than economic health. It is measuring the death of an old life script. The linear path of college, marriage, house, promotion, and retirement no longer delivers the meaning it once promised. People are not curling up in a ball. They are buying fewer cars, skipping packaged foods, and trading stuff for experiences. When an old script breaks, people are forced to find meaning on their own terms, and that search is historically the most powerful category creation engine the economy has ever seen. The Synthetic Customer Will Scale Mediocrity If You Let It Research shows that AI-generated synthetic customers can replicate roughly 90 percent of real conjoint study outcomes, including which features drive choice and early price sensitivity. Companies like Target and US Bank are already testing products on synthetic audiences before launch. The technology is genuinely exciting and could transform how businesses plan, build, and compete. The danger is that most companies will point their synthetic customer tools at the fat part of the bell curve, optimizing for the average buyer and calling it an insight. Eddie Yoon has spent decades proving that the super consumer, roughly 8 to 10 percent of any customer base, can drive up to 90 percent of gross margins. Synthetic customers are only as powerful as the data they are trained on. Train them on average, and you simulate mediocrity at scale. The unlock is running synthetic studies on super consumers first, then non-consumers, and finding where those two extremes could meet. That intersection is where new categories are born. Proprietary data sets and purpose-built AI applications will separate the companies that discover the next wave from the ones that simply made the status quo slightly cheaper to produce. Gen Z Is Not Irrational, They Are Responding to Real Data Roughly 32 percent of Gen Z investors have played prediction markets, a similar share are in crypto, and about 69 percent of Polymarket accounts have lost money since 2022. On the surface this looks like recklessness. In context, it makes complete sense. This generation grew up through 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and Covid, all before they could legally drink. Every institution that promised safety failed at least once during their formative years. The Nasdaq 100 returned roughly 21 percent annually over the last decade. The S&P returned 13 to 14 percent. Sitting still in an index fund would have made them wealthy. But when certainty has detonated repeatedly, patience does not feel safe, it feels naive. The speculation is not stupidity. It is a rational response to a world where the old guarantees proved hollow. The prescription from Eddie Yoon is to hold all three investment buckets at once: a boring cash safety net covering 3 to 18 months of expenses, smart index-based investments with consistent long-term returns, and a smaller speculative position built on genuine expertise and category-level knowledge. Speculation itself is not the enemy. Speculating without a superpower, without real edge, is where the damage gets done. The whiplash is immediate and brutal. After the triumph of "Remembrance of the Daleks," this three-part story lands like a thud. Jim gives another harsh —an unprecedented score that suggests something fundamentally broken beneath the surface. Despite strong performances from McCoy and Aldred, the story struggles with disconnected thematic elements, confused production design, and a narrative that never quite coheres. The Setup That Doesn't Work Terra Alpha: an Earth colony where mandatory happiness enforced through surveillance and a cheerful Happiness Patrol keeps citizens compliant. The story also includes a candy-obsessed killer, underground dwellers (indigenous inhabitants driving plot devices), a visiting blues musician, and a complex political hierarchy. None of these elements integrate coherently. Jim's assessment: This is Paradise Towers revisited, but worse. Same drab corridors masquerading as streets, same societal oppression, same everything-we've-seen-before feeling, but without even Paradise Towers' redeeming visual moments. The Candyman Disaster Originally planned as a human villain—just a bored, pale killer. JNT and director Chris Clough wanted a robot instead. The result: an uncomfortable costume that restricted the actor's movement and visibility, made the character nonsensical, and looked rushed and disconnected from every other design element on set. The production nearly got sued by a candy company for the character's visual design. , Tonal Chaos The story can't decide what it wants to be. Satirical critique of authoritarian happiness? Straight thriller? Comedic romp? It tries all three and masters none. The mime-like makeup on the Happiness Patrol's faces goes unexplained. The slot machine execution method appears once, then switches to fondant surprise. These aren't deepening themes—they're random design choices. McCoy and Aldred Carry the Load Both hosts agree the leads transcend the material. McCoy's ad-libbed singing of "As Time Goes By" shows theatrical training and improvisational instinct. Aldred proves her action credentials and moral agency—the Doctor actively investigating rather than stumbling into danger. Yet even their chemistry can't save disconnected storytelling. John's specific note: the Doctor telling Ace "You're no good to me like this" when she's about to attack—character development that deserves better context. Production Quirks The TARDIS gets painted pink by the Happiness Patrol, requiring repainting back to blue. The sets feel claustrophobic despite supposedly being outside on streets. The behind-the-sofa guests (except McCoy, Aldred, and Sheila Hancock) admitted the story didn't work. Ratings dropped after Episode One (5.3M to 4.6M to bounce back to 5.3M). The Political Subtext Nobody Asked For Sheila Hancock (Helen A) read the script as Margaret Thatcher allegory and deliberately amplified her performance toward that direction. Andrew Cartmel apparently got nervous about the comparison; Hancock pushed harder into it. John appreciates the subtext; Jim dismisses it as irrelevant to the story itself. The political commentary doesn't enhance the narrative—it distracts from already-muddled plotting. What Could Have Worked Discussion of road-not-taken choices: What if they'd fully integrated Ace into the Happiness Patrol with brainwashing elements? What if the candy theme permeated every design choice instead of being isolated to the Candyman? What if this story had followed something other than the series' strongest episode? The Colin Baker Question Jim wonders aloud how Colin Baker might have handled this material—would his more theatrical approach have elevated the chaos or made it worse? Speculation on whether "Happiness Patrol" appears in any of the audio continuations (especially with alternate Doctors). Coming Up Next: Monday Patreon Exclusive 173: Music, Memory TARDIS, Doctor Who Unbound audio "Full Fathom Five," and comics—"Time and Tide" and "Follow That TARDIS!" Wednesday Main Feed (Friday Patreon Early): "Silver Nemesis" - the ACTUAL 25th Anniversary story (three parts). Jim handles narration. Will it recover from Happiness Patrol? Michael Howell, CEO of CrossBorder Capital, an investment advisory firm, and author of Capital Wars, returns to The Julia La Roche Show for an in-studio episode. In this episode, Howell reveals money is flowing out of financial markets into the real economy, marking the end of Wall Street's era and the beginning of Main Street's turn. He warns the market is in a "speculation phase" with low quality returns built on narrow foundations—only AI and semiconductors are racing while most securities stagnate—and the next phase will be "turbulence" as liquidity slows and the bearish flattening yield curve continues. Howell details how the system has monetized with the Treasury refinancing $600 billion per week in short-term bills, notes there is "unquestionably way too much debt," and makes the contrarian call that the Fed will raise rates in the next 12 months because the economy is too strong at 7-8% nominal GDP growth. He positions commodities and energy as the place to be, argues gold is a hedge against monetary inflation (not CPI), and suggests the gold-oil ratio could imply oil prices of $200 per barrel.Thank you to our sponsor Monetary Metals. https://monetary-metals.com/julia Links: Website: http://www.crossbordercapital.com/ Twitter/X https://x.com/crossbordercapSubstack: https://capitalwars.substack.com/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Capital-Wars-Rise-Global-Liquidity/dp/30303929020:00 Opening - Money leaving financial markets for real economy1:29 Speculation phase - Low quality returns on narrow foundations6:49 Liquidity rolling over - Rate of change critical7:38 Money flowing from financial sector to real economy13:23 Debt refinancing phenomenon - 4 out of 5 transactions15:25 Way too much debt, only monetization is the way out16:40 China monetizing like Japan did with Abenomics19:32 US monetization already happening - $600B weekly debt refinancing24:28 MOVE index suppressed through treasury buybacks30:12 Kevin Warsh expectations for new Fed chair32:01 Inflation no longer transitory - Now illusionary35:48 Monetary inflation hurdle 7-8% per year37:26 What to own - Diversified into commodities, energy, gold40:10 Gold-oil ratio could mean oil $200 per barrel40:50 Contrarian call - Fed must raise rates in 12 months43:15 Find him at Capital Wars Substack

This is our continuing series pulled from archives going back to 2005. This week, we go through the looking glass in a 2005 episode that shows why we call this program Peering Into Darkness Radio. Originally released June 6, 2005 This week's PID Radio connects some dots to reveal a very disturbing picture. Satanic ritual abuse is a controversial topic. But not only is ritual abuse a real phenomenon, we believe it is more widespread than most of us realize. What's more--and more frightening--it appears that there is an ongoing, coordinated effort to use children, especially marginalized children from poor or broken homes, as sexual playthings for the wealthy and powerful. We talked about the Johnny Gosch case, which was a central thread to tonight's show. Johnny was abducted from Des Moines in 1982 at the age of 12, allegedly by a group working for a man named Lawrence King, owner of the Franklin Community Credit Union in Omaha, Nebraska. Johnny's mother hasn't seen him since--but he's back in the news. Earlier this year, it was revealed that a reporter for an Internet news site, Jeff Gannon, was actually James Guckert, a former male prostitute who had somehow managed to get security clearance to attend White House press briefings. Speculation began to circulate around the web that Gannon/Guckert was in fact the adult Johnny Gosch. What's especially disturbing about this case are the connections between Lawrence King, Boys Town, and power brokers in the Republican Party at the national level: One of the young men who testified in the Franklin Credit Union case was able to draw an accurate floor plan of the private living quarters inside the White House--where the public is never allowed. In addition to the Franklin case, we discussed recent cases of satanic abuse of children in Louisiana, Ohio, the U.K.; the involvement of the CIA in abducting children for use as prostitutes (and possible mind control purposes); and the connection of the recent death of “gonzo journalist” Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Gosch, and a “snuff film” that may have been recorded at the Bohemian Grove, an annual retreat near Sacramento, California popular with powerful conservative politicians. What's being done to our children is dark and twisted, but it is definitely not limited to a few isolated cases of disturbed individuals. Sharon's niece, Sarah Sachleben, is fighting stage 4 bowel cancer, and the medical bills are piling up. If you are led to help, please go to GilbertHouse.org/hopeforsarah. Follow us! MSE host Bill Powers applies Howard Marks' January 2020 memo “You Bet” to junior mining speculation, emphasizing that decision quality and outcomes aren't the same because both luck and process drive results. Drawing on Annie Duke's book “Thinking in Bets,” Powers urges probabilistic thinking, accurate assessment of one's own skills and being comfortable uncertainty. Marks' framework distinguishes games by hidden information, luck, and skill. Powers argues junior resource markets are less efficient “alpha markets” where skill does matter. A key lesson is evaluating the “proposition” (odds relative to the price) rather than just picking the “favorite” or “best.” Action items: read the memo, read Duke's book, and audit recent investments for accurate proposition identification and probabilistic reasoning. 00:00 Mindset Reset 00:31 Howard Marks Memo 02:10 Process Not Outcome 04:34 Thinking in Bets 06:16 Games Luck Skill 08:19 Alpha Markets Edge 09:06 The Proposition 12:02 Nifty Fifty Junk Bonds 14:14 Eight Gambling Lessons 19:57 Second Level Thinking 20:27 Action Items Howard Mark's “You Bet” memo: https://www.oaktreecapital.com/docs/default-source/memos/you-bet.pdf?sfvrsn=785dbe65_8 Annie Duke's “Thinking in Bets”: https://www.annieduke.com/books/ Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 Bill Powers is not a licensed financial advisor. For episode 291, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski working behind the scenes on Emmy season content and, of course, TV Topics. Programming note: while this episode is a normal one, next week's episode is being recorded right around this one and won't reflect anything that happens this weekend or next week. Just keep that in mind. As for this one, we spend a bit of time talking about Star Wars, since my review (here) of The Mandalorian and Grogu went up a few days ago. I also give my thoughts on Power Ballad, while Myles chimes in on The Sheep Detectives. Throw in your questions, as well as some late chatter about the actors rumored to be auditioning for James Bond, and it's a very solid episode. Apologies for my voice, as there's some seasonal allergies at play, but we work around it, for you. You're welcome, folks (I kid).
In this interview from the 2026 Bainbridge Community Foundation Annual Financial Education Series, Paul sits down with Bill Bernstein — neurologist, financial historian, and author of The Four Pillars of Investing and If You Can — for a wide-ranging conversation drawn from 50-plus years of investing experience.Bill explains why you're only rewarded for taking risk in well-regulated markets (and why crypto doesn't qualify), how today's market echoes the late 1990s, why the "reverse glide path" makes sense the older you get, and what the Bessembinder research really tells us about the cost of trying to pick winners. Paul and Bill also debate withdrawal strategies, the case against long bonds, and whether tilted small-value investing still works once "the bozos know about it."A masterclass in evidence-based investing from one of the most respected voices in the field.CHAPTERS00:00 Intro from Matt Longmire, Bainbridge Community Foundation02:50 Welcoming Bill Bernstein03:50 Why The Four Pillars of Investing belongs on every DIY investor's shelf05:50 Risk vs. reward — and why Bitcoin doesn't qualify08:30 How many asset classes do you really need?11:50 Where today's market resembles the late 1990s13:40 Are REITs still worth holding?15:50 The case for automating everything19:45 Why retirees need to fear sequence-of-returns risk21:30 Paul's 5% rule vs. the 4% rule25:30 The two-bucket theory and the reverse glide path27:30 Prediction markets, gambling, and "being the house"32:00 The sociological signs of a bubble35:00 Speculation vs. gambling — gold's real return40:00 The Bessembinder study: why 4% of stocks make most of the returns46:00 Why rich people plan three generations ahead49:00 Audience Q&A58:30 Tilted index funds (DFA, Avantis) — worth it?01:03:50 The future of Social Security01:07:00 Closing thoughts and book recommendationsLINKS:The Four Pillars of Investing — Bill Bernstein (2nd ed., 2023)If You Can — Free PDF from Bill BernsteinThe Bessembinder Study — "Do Stocks Outperform Treasury Bills?"Bainbridge Community FoundationBen Carlson's New Book on Risk and Reward
