EPISODE 315 - We continue our coverage of the Peter David / Todd McFarlane run on The Incredible Hulk. This issue, the theme is fathers and more specifically abusive fathers. The "enemy" such as it is, is a super-powered child who has lost his father and sees his caretaker threatened. The Hulk talks a big game about not caring but in the end, does the right thing. This story picks up a thread that has now become a major fixture in Hulk lore -- that Banner's father abused him, perhaps creating the suppressed anger and pain that would someday emerge as The Hulk. The origin of this idea is not this story. That started in a Bill Mantlo story from Hulk 312. But as Kevin points out, it seems Mantlo stole that story from a not-yet-published Barry Windsor-Smith comic. Former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter wrote about that here: http://jimshooter.com/2011/06/plagiaris.html ----------- Subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com for bonus monthly episodes. "There's always a choice. You're the one who taught me that." After giving us a glimpse of Wolverine's past in "Red Dawn," the stage was set for a full-length exploration in our very next episode. And with that, season two continues its globe-trotting, introspective character-driven features with a solo outing centered on the enigmatic Canadian X-Man. Notably, the extended flashback at the center of "Repo Man" pulls directly from Barry Windsor-Smith's 1991 Marvel Comics Presents serial, "Weapon X." Violent and atmospheric, this adaptation can't help but suffer in comparison due to the necessity of reigning in the comic's harsher elements for Saturday morning consumption. Beyond that, "Weapon X" had a tenuous relationship with the canon from its inception, with the story calling its own authenticity into question at various points. Nevertheless, "Weapon X" was so well-received that it stood for years as the most definitive account of Wolverine's origin. Later revelations and retcons would muddy the waters, but at this point, the animated series is guided by a very solid pedigree. The inclusion of Alpha Flight, while appreciated from a world-building standpoint, doesn't do this episode many favors in terms of clarity. Outside of shedding some light on Wolverine's past, the plot is concerned with linking two seemingly disparate milestones in Logan's history: how his skeleton came to be laced with adamantium, and his involvement with Alpha Flight. The shadowy, unscrupulous, ultra-militaristic Department H serves as the connective tissue, leading to an ultimately unsatisfying conclusion. If Department H was behind or had knowledge of the Weapon X Project, as the episode suggests, then Logan escaped their clutches by the skin of his teeth, only to soon thereafter coincidentally meet James Hudson, who happens to be the leader of Canada's premiere superhero team, and is brought in to join Alpha Flight, under the purview of... Department H. It begs the question as to how Wolverine was allowed to leave the team in the first place. (To say nothing for the fact that he was given the codename of the project that "created" him, a detail which makes little sense as either another absurd coincidence or as an inside joke by Department H... for the audience's benefit only.) Department H's connection to Weapon X seems like it should come as a major revelation, at least to Logan, but the script doesn't attribute any particular significance to this. Still, it's hard to fault the show for filling in logic gaps that the comics themselves had yet to address, given the time and resources allotted. Wolverine's mysterious past represents a corner of X-Men lore that somehow always manages to be more interesting in theory than in execution. Every resolution offered comes with its own set of brand new questions, and in that sense, "Repo Man" can be considered faithful to the spirit of Wolverine's role throughout the '90s. As a cohesive story, it is ultimately unsatisfying, but almost manages to stick the landing by way of momentum and novelty. It remains to be seen how sustainable that approach will be going forward. X-TRA: This episode was written by Wolverine co-creator Len Wein, his first of four such credits over the course of the series. It's a curious fit, given that Wein chronicled only Wolverine's earliest appearances when the character was effectively a blank slate. He therefore has the unenviable task of cobbling together pieces of a mythology which he had no hand in establishing. It's an admirable effort, and a credit to the production for reaching outside their usual pool of television writers.

Episode 24 - Murdock and Marvel: 1986 Part 2 If you are every arguing with friends about what was the best year in the history of comics, you could do worse than arguing for 1986. With a ton of interesting independent books, vibrant small-press publishers popping up everywhere, and four of the most beloved stories in the history of comics, '86 was definitely a banner year! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1986. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #226-237, Spectacular Spider-Man #110, Amazing Spider-Man #277, Marvel Age Annual #2, Avengers Annual #15, Marvel Fanfare #27, Elektra: Assassin #1 and 4, Marvel Saga the Official History #13, and Marvel Graphic Novel: Daredevil Love and War Writing credits: Frank Miller and Denny O'Neil (226), Frank Miller (227-233), Mark Gruenwald (234), Danny Fingeroth (235), Ann Nocenti (236), “John Harkness” (237) Pencilers: David Mazzucchelli (226-233), Steve Ditko (234-235), Barry Windsor-Smith (236), Lois Williams (237) Inks: Dennis Janke (226), David Mazzucchelli (227-233), Klaus Jansen (234), Danny Bulanadi (235), Windsor-Smith and Bob Wiacek (236), Al Williamson and Bulandi (237) The year begins Frank Miller returning to the title and a story where Daredevil helps Gladiator save Betsy Beatty after confronting him stealing from a museum Next, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli start an iconic run of books that you've probably heard of “Born Again” that starts with book 227 and finishes with 233. This incredible will be the spotlight for this week. After Born Again, we get four stand-alone stories by four different writers to finish out the year. The first against a weird “hero” named Mad Cap who spouts nonsense and seemly can't be killed. Next Daredevil takes on Mr. Hyde yet again. Then Daredevil and the Black Widow team up to track down another deranged member of the Super Soldier Project. Finally, Daredevil takes on the Klaw who's looking to re-establish himself by taking him down. Issue #237 was initially going to be the start of Steve Engelhart's run on DD, but he was replaced by Ann Nocenti after writing just one issue, which he had his name taken off of, and the pen name “John Harkness” was credited Daredevil: Love and War GN told the story of how the Kingpin kidnapped a psychiatrist's wife to coerce him to help his wife, who was not recovering well from her accident and her captivity in the sewers. By the end of the story we find out Vanessa only wants to escape from Fisk, and he sends her away to Europe with the doctor and his wife so she can heal and start a new life. Elektra: Assassin is completely batshit. Fully painted by Bill S., it is wildly experimental and confusing. Elektra and a cyborg who is obsessed with her try to stop a presidential candidate who looks kind of like Dan Quayle from doing the will of “the beast” and causing a nuclear holocaust. New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #227 February 1986 “Apocalypse” through Daredevil #233 August 1986 “Armageddon” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway It was the Best of Times, but it led to the Worst of Times. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.
Barry Windsor-Smith finally reveals the secret origin of Wolverine! Well…kind of. The biweekly anthology comic Marvel Comics Presents got a shot in the arm when it ran the serialized saga of Weapon X from issues #72-84 in 1991, and although the story has an amusing origin story of its own, it's fairly light on actual details about Logan's past. Instead, BWS wrote, drew, and colored an intensely voyeuristic, occasionally psychedelic, and shockingly violent exploration of man's inhumanity to man. We tell the story of how Weapon X (the serial) came to be and offer our own interpretations and impressions of the story, where its true interests lie, and what we think is actually happening (maybe) in the last few chapters. Today's guest, Ann Nocenti, has been there and done that. Not only did she break in as a writer with Marvel on titles such as Bizarre Adventures, Spider-Woman, and the Dazzler and Beast miniseries Beauty and the Beast, she in short order became an assistant editor for Carl Potts, where she worked on such titles as The Incredible Hulk, The Defenders, Doctor Strange, and The Thing. Not only did she and the elusive Arthur Adams create Longshot and launched him in his own miniseries, she teamed with other A-list talent like Mike Mignola, Barry Windsor-Smith, and John Romita Jr. Not only did she have a defining run on Daredevil (where she introduced villains like Typhoid Mary and Blackheart), but she wrote Kid Eternity for Vertigo and then left comics to pursue journalism and film. And guess what? She recently returned to the Marvel fold with miniseries featuring Captain Marvel and Storm, and worked with Berger Books (Dark Horse) on Ruby Falls and Seeds! Hey everyone - been a LONG time! In this episode, I catch up briefly on where I've been for the past few months, what's going on now, and the things I hope will happen in 2023. Also a few quick rapid fire reviews/catchups on things I've been reading other than Monsters. This will be the second episode of the show that is specific to a specific title, and in this case, I've chosen Monsters by Barry Windsor-Smith. The book is 365 pages, and every panel was...well, guess you'll just have to listen and find out, eh? We get into the book, we get personal, and we get what may some consider as...controversial?! If you like what you hear, drop a quick 5-star review so the show can find its natural, organic audience! Thanks for listening!
Well here we are, the FINAL Please Hold For Dave Sim. Of 2022. Or, EVER. I dunno. I just send the questions and record the answers, I'm not in charge of anything. Anyway, this time Dave and Matt talk about: Jeff Seiler's Kansas City Royals annual (Let's hope it went to KC or Cooperstown...) Barry Windsor-Smith's Frost Giant's Daughter Harry Truman and the Sunday funnies If this is the FINAL Please Hold, or not? What Dave would change in Cerebus if he could What books Dave recommends If Dave would ever try a Cerebus-like project again An idea to make Dave some of that money we've heard so much about The contents of Cerebus volume 1, and what's missing and why The Form & Void remastered campaign What to do with your collection to keep your non-fan kids/heirs from missing out on cashing in when you cash out And if this is REALLY the FINALE, or not? If this IS the last one, we had a pretty good four year run. And that means there's an end to what Jesse Herndon has to transcribe, and the book of transcripts can get sketched out in Matt's head. Matt and Lee talk about Deathmate Image/Valiant crossover and some of their favorite Valiant Comics from the 90's. ----more---- Images from the show are HERE Deathmate notes: Designated by color rather than issue numbers (namely Yellow, Blue, Black, and Red) plus two book-end issues, Deathmate Prologue and Deathmate Epilogue, as well as Preview issues collected with comic products, the four main issues were written so they could be read in any order. Created at the peak of the comic book speculator boom, the project was heavily promoted and sold hundreds of thousands of copies, but was beset with production delays. The Image half (Black, Red, and Epilogue) came out severely behind schedule and out of sequence. Deathmate Red shipped after the epilogue issue, and despite cover dates of September 1993 to February 1994, the actual publication lag was far longer than six months. The plot evolved around a chance interdimensional meeting of two characters, Solar from Valiant and Void from Image's WildC.A.T.s. The two became lovers, but their joining would mean the destruction of both comic book universes. It is notable that only half of the Image founding members chose to take part. Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, and Todd McFarlane were not involved, although McFarlane's character Al Simmons makes a brief appearance in Deathmate Red. In my personal opinion yellow, blue and the prologue had a more cohesive story. Where the image characters had a better integration into the valiant universe's history. Case in point brigade's characters worked for Harada Industries, an X men derived group. Besides being delayed black and red's stories definitely had a rushed feel to the story. In black we see the Top Cow studio take front and center with ties to Wildcats and Gen 13. X O makes an appearance, but he is used more like a power hungry military general than a visigoth with an alien suit of armor. Union , an energy based alien creature is the one character from black that allows this story to connect to the epilogue. Red's story, sadly for me, is just a Rob Liefeld sketchbook. The story is about Youngblood in this new universe the biggest addition is that Bloodshot is a member. While the Prophet is poorly used as a plot point to let the heroes know what is wrong with this amalgamation of a world. Red was so far delayed that it was released after the epilogue issue. Epilogue centers more around the events from blue with Solar, supreme, and Darque. This series had a great germ of an idea, but it missed the boat with the creative teams. If it had some editorial oversight for both companies it might have had a chance at being a success. However, with egos, missed deadlines, and perhaps the lack of experience from portions of the owners with the business side of things it went down as a failure. For me , I liked parts of the story and going back and rereading the story with a more mature eye I can see what drew me to the story. 1 The crossover was something rarely seen between two independent comic groups. 2 Deathmate had the rock and roll comic artists 3 Although Valiant at the beginning wasn't flashy, they had a good set of storytellers and a well thought-out and connected universe. I was hoping that it would influence the Image books. 4 Finally the book introduced me to more “up and coming'' creators. Like Joe Q and Jeff Matsuda. Facts about publication sales: The Valiant Deathmate books (Prologue, Blue, and Yellow) had print runs of over 700,000 copies, but by the time Deathmate Red was released, it had a print run of 250,000, although retailers were nonetheless left with many unsold copies. At the time, comic book distributors would only allow unsold books to be returned if they were six months late. Valiant Comics Notes: In 1988, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics Jim Shooter, Steven J. Massarsky and a group of investors attempted to purchase Marvel Entertainment. They submitted the second-highest bid, with financier Ronald Perelman submitting the highest bid and acquiring Marvel. Shooter and Massarsky instead formed Voyager Communications in 1989 with significant venture capital financing from Triumph Capital. Valiant (an imprint of Voyager Communications) recruited numerous writers and artists from Marvel, including Barry Windsor-Smith and Bob Layton, and launched an interconnected line of superhero comics featuring a mixture of characters licensed from Western Publishing and original creations. 1993 Valiant won Best Publisher over 5% Market Share, becoming the first publisher outside of Marvel and DC to do so. Valiant also engaged in several comic book-marketing innovations common in the 1990s, such as issue zero "origin" issues, the gold logo program, coupons redeemable for original comic books, and chromium covers. Following the conclusion of the "Unity" crossover in September 1992, Valiant released Bloodshot, Ninjak, H.A.R.D. Corps, The Second Life of Dr. Mirage, and Timewalker, among other titles. Turok #1 (VALIANT) - One of the top ten largest print runs in history, a runaway video game success that brought gamers into the fold, and the first real sign that comic properties were viable for licensing Perhaps the biggest innovation was their use of continuity. The events in the comics almost always took place during the same time frame as publication with readers expecting one month time jumps between issues. There was the rare exception to this rule, such as two back-to-back issues covering the events of the same night. In this case, the narration box would date them — for example, both issues would be dated "December 12th, 1991" if the event began in a December issue released on the 12th. Another method they used took advantage of the more hard scifi setting, and had characters experience a jump forward of several months as a side effect of traveling faster than light. An event in one comic had immediate and lasting effects in another. Once an event happened, it was set in stone. RetCons never happened, and Comic-Book Time was averted. The Valiant universe was split into two time periods: the modern day, and the 41st century, with events in the former having effects on the latter. All in all, the formula worked, attracting many fans with its refreshing and unique style, and Valiant sold over 80 million comics in its first 5 years, becoming the third highest selling comic book company (after, of course, Marvel and DC)... It is a mantle that is usually passed down from father to son through the generations, with some exceptions. As such, the series chronicled a number of protagonists. By the year 4001, industrialization in Japan had begun to consume every square inch of free space within the island nation's borders. To house and feed its growing population, the country had built upon its own infrastructure centuries before, turning the whole of Japan into a towering pillar, hundreds of miles wide. Eventually, the nation detached from Earth entirely, and now orbits the planet. Governed by a mysterious yet benevolent artificial intelligence named Father, the Japan of 4001 is divided into various sectors, with names derived from the time of founding, and generally separated among the lines of economic status and social class. Two issues of bliss, two issues of blah -- that's how the Milksops see these issues. We get a fun look at Rogue and Storm's friendly in 185, followed by the double-sized Barry Windsor-Smith pencilled epic of Storm and Forge falling in love with each other! They're each fun, intriguing, exciting issues of the X-Men. And then we get two completely confusing issues where they face off against an alien race called the Dire Wraiths who come from the Marvel title ROM, which was one of those toy-first-comics-later comics that often doesn't work (Transformers, you get a pass). We also talk a lot about superstar artists George Perez and Neal Adams who sadly recently passed away. They each were impactful for their work as artists and work behind the scenes as human beings! In the mailbags portion, we pick an all-bald super-powered basketball team and talk about digital vs print comics! In this episode we reconnect with the man himself, the current King of comics, comic book legend Jim Shooter. Jim returns to the show to give us an update on where he is now, and the state of the comic book industry as a whole. We then dive into a special segment of the show, never before attempted, bringing in 4 special guests each reflecting on certain points in Jim's career. The guests are: Greg Holland - Director of Valiantfans.com, the major VALIANT Comics fan site, Jim Hollister - The leading DEFIANT Comics collector and host of the DEFIANT Comics Museum, Zach Lynch - Original DEFIANT Comics intern, and Scott Braden - Broadway Comics specialist and contributor to the recent 'Overstreet Guide to Lost Universes'.. This is a very special episode and a tribute to the incredible work of Jim Shooter's career. Listen In!Jim Shooter Bio:Jim Shooter is an American writer, editor and publisher for various comic books. He started professionally in the medium at the age of 13 at what is now DC Comics , and he is most notable for his legendary 1978 – 1987 run as Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief, and his work as editor in chief of Valiant Comics. He was also both the creator and EIC of DEFIANT Comics, and Broadway Comics. During his tenure at Marvel, the company enjoyed some of its best successes. He believed that every title, no matter how unpopular it was, deserved a chance to succeed. He abandoned the long-time Marvel Comics policy that allocated the best writers to the best-selling titles. This allowed some of the second-string titles, such as The Uncanny X-Men and Daredevil, to reach then-unprecedented heights of popularity. After leaving Marvel, he fronted an effort to purchase the publisher from its corporate ownership, losing out at the last minute to a slightly higher bid. He then founded a new company, Voyager Communications, which published comics under the Valiant Comics banner, Valiant entered the superhero market with a relaunch of the Gold Key Comics character Magnus, Robot Fighter. Shooter brought many of Marvel's creators to Valiant, including people like Steve Ditko and Barry Windsor-Smith, as well as industry veterans such as Art Nichols, John Dixon, and Don Perlin. Jim founded Defiant Comics in 1993, Broadway comics in 1995,with many other positions, gigs, and comics written between then and today. Currently Jim is the EIC of illustrated media, a custom comic book company. Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! The Revenge crew start the first episode of 2022 right! After taking a moment to honor the legendary awesomeness that is Betty White , we then jump into our usual shenanigan’s with our reflection of this past year and dreams of what may come. What was our very best of 2021?Bry’s pick was our very own web-comic, “Operation: B.L.U.E.”Being able to jump sides from reader to creator is an experience he never thought he’d have the opportunity to do and has loved every moment of it.Tadd’s best of 21 was Barry Windsor-Smith’s, “Monsters.” It’s a magnum opus that embodies everything that made him want to be comic creator way back in the distant time 2006.The WEIRDEST OF 2021?And by “weirdest” we mean the most enjoyed from outside our per usual scope of consumed storytelling. The projects that expanded our casual horizons, if you will.Big Bry’s pick: Gaveneye. The mysterious and murderous, psychological drama from the mind of, Blue Tiger favorite, Sloane Leong!Tadd’s pick was the final book from Adhouse, the Immonen’s social media experiment manifested into beautiful tangibility, Grass of Parnassus.Last, but not least… our Moby Dicks of 2021!The failed hunts. For Bry it was the suddenly unobtainable “Pluto” series from, comic juggernaut, Naoki Urasawa. A modern retelling of Tezuka’s 1950’s classic, “Astro Boy.” If you have it and want to hook him up…. get ready to watch a giant cry with joy. It may not look like much, but for some reason the obsession with this figure will not fade. Yeah, it could of been purchased via the world-wide-web, but damnit’, Tadd needed to find it in person…. out in the wilds, like nature intended. From way back in the year of 91’, Toy Biz’s Wolverine. It’s so stupid, it’s beautiful ( I need it).And that rounds out another year of fresh, straight from the blue body, tiger milk. It’s cold outside so spread the warmth of our broadcast center… hidden… somewhere… in the pop culture wild-lands. Powered by…. This is a public episode. Also—who alters Kurt's pants? Our panel of experts investigates.
This week we look at comic book creator, Barry Windsor-Smith's, recently released magnum opus, Monsters, which took nearly 2 decades to complete! Plus talk on Marvel's character the Hulk and tons more Barry Windsor-Smith recommendations for all our fans! Host: Andy Larson Co Hosts: Chad Smith & JA Scott Guest Panelist: Mikey Wood
