Hello to you listening in Pasadena, California! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. I've been binge-watching The Big Bang Theory TV series as I do this time each year to humor me through our Pacific Northwest November to May Rain Festival. As you might know a consistent theme is the characters' devotion to comics and superheroes. Why? The characters are highly intelligent, socially awkward nerds who have difficulty navigating society whereas the superheroes possess save-the-day abilities, rare powers, and bravery. Comics can be a safe place to fantasize living idealized versions of themselves as the nerd-turned-hero. But what do the Superheroes have to say about living life as a Superhero? Following are 7 quotes: 1. “When you decide not to be afraid you can find friends in super unexpected places.” — Ms. Marvel 2. “Everybody's story begins “once upon a time,” and it's up to us to cherish the time we're given to ensure we live happily ever after.” — Scarlet Witch 3. “I have no idea where I'm going to be tomorrow but I accept the fact that tomorrow will come and I'm going to rise to meet it.” — Donna Troy 4. “The fate of your planet rests not in the hands of gods. It rests in the hands of mortals.” — Thor 5. “The future is worth it. All the pain. All the tears. The future is worth the fight.” — Martian Manhunter 6. “The door is more than it appears. It separates who you are from who you can be. You do not have to walk through it… You can run.” — Franklin Richards 7. “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulders to let him know the world hasn't ended.” — Batman Story Prompt: For a long time your character has felt that she is more than she appears to be but does not believe she has what it takes to show up fully in her power until one day a door appears in a wall and she .... write that story and share it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Welcome Back to Make Mine Multiversity: A Marvel Podcast! Each episode we'll be looking at Marvel books, old and new! We discuss fun Marvel comics, Marvel news, Marvel history and, now, are putting the "mine" back into Make Mine Multiversity.Welcome to the first official episode of 2026! I've got some wild episodes for y'all this year. For those who're new, each month I talk with a guest about a Marvel comic that's memorable to them. Sometimes they're personally meaningful, sometimes it's "I read this a few months ago and its still sticking around."This month I'm welcoming on letterer extraordinaire Clayton Cowles (pronounced like Coals or Kohl's.) We're talking "New Avengers" (2005) #27-37, which I probably said was from 2004 because that's when the first issue was first on stands. But who am I to argue with cover dates and the Marvel Wiki? For some bonafides, Clayton is the Eisner-award winning letterer of so many books. You probably know him from most Kieron Gillen joints: "The Wicked + the Divine," "The Power Fantasy," "Journey Into Mystery," "Eternals" Vol. 5, "Die." Did you know he does both "Batman" books? What about "Star Wars?" "Helen of Wyndhorn?" Thompson & co.'s sadly now ended "Birds of Prey?" So many great books!Next time, we should be reading the original "Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars" from 1984! All twelve issues. Get ready for a fun one folks. You can find it collected as "Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars" or on Marvel Unlimited.Elias can be found writing here at eliasrwrites.ghost.io. Clayton can be found wherever comics are sold, on Bluesky @claytoncowles.bsky.social, and via his newsletter. Our theme music is “Excelsior” by Carol Romo and our audio editor is me, Elias. If the episode is too quiet or, maybe, too loud, or even too full of page turning foley, blame him.The show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, (Stitcher is apparently dead and buried) and other places so please subscribe!

This week, we welcome the brilliant Dylan Meconis, creator of Queen of the Sea and Bite Me. Here's what we cover: How most colorists actually break in (hint: it's not by “murdering another colorist in single combat” — though that was discussed) What “flatting” is — and why it's often your first step into paid coloring work Why networking is really just “being friends with cartoonists” Portfolio strategy: Why saying “I do everything” is less effective than saying “I do this brilliantly” Analog coloring techniques — watercolor paper, oil-based pencils, and why certain materials go extinct at the worst possible moment The realities of scanning physical art (and why scanners are basically cameras on an arm) How to handle black plates, rich black, and avoiding fuzzy type in print If you've ever wondered whether coloring could be an income stream for you — or how to level up your current process — this episode is a masterclass. Products and Programs mentioned on the show Note: Some of the links are affiliate links WildCraft Studio is in Portland, Oregon. PITT monochrome oil pencils by Faber-Castell Watercolor paints, Daniel Smith brand Watercolor paper (cold press) by Arches White watercolor paper, Dick Blick house brand Epson scanner, Perfection series Epson scanner, Workforce series Colored pencils, Caran d'Ache Summary In this engaging conversation, the hosts welcome cartoonist Dylan Meconis to explore various topics including coloring techniques, the integration of digital and traditional media, and the importance of choosing the right materials for comic creation. Dylan shares insights into her unique artistic process, the challenges of color printing, and the significance of lettering in comics. On Rewind, a sit down with filmmaker, writer, podcaster, and pop‑culture ambassador Kevin Smith to revisit the creation and legacy of his AMC reality series Comic Book Men. Running from 2012 to 2018, the show became a celebration of fandom, friendship, and the magic of the local comic shop — all rooted in Kevin's real‑life store, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey. Recorded at New York Comic-Con, this conversation captures Kevin at his most candid and enthusiastic as he reflects on how a simple idea — turning the everyday life of his comic shop into a TV series — became a six‑season phenomenon. The Origin Story Before it became Comic Book Men, the series was originally titled Secret Stash, named after Kevin's beloved shop. It was a natural fit: Kevin owned the store, the staff were characters in their own right, and the world of comics was exploding into mainstream culture. The timing was perfect. AMC wanted a companion series to follow The Walking Dead, and Kevin's blend of geek culture, humor, and heart made the Stash the ideal setting. The Series at a Glance Premiered: 2012 Original Title: Secret Stash Final Title: Comic Book Men Format Evolution: Season 1: Six one‑hour episodes Season 2: Expanded to sixteen half‑hour episodes Total Run: Six seasons Season 7: Confirmed in 2018 but ultimately cancelled before production Across its run, the show blended Pawn Stars‑style collectibles, comic book history, fan culture, and the unmistakable chemistry of Kevin's longtime friends and Stash staff — Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Mike Zapcic, and Ming Chen. Comic books tell stories using pictures and words together, making them exciting and easy to follow. They began in newspapers in the late 1800s as short comic strips. In the 1930s, comic books grew popular with the creation of superheroes like Superman and Batman. During World War II, comics entertained readers at home and overseas. Over time, comics expanded to include many kinds of stories, from action and mystery to real-life topics. Today, comic books influence movies, shows, and pop culture around the world.
