Today, I'm thrilled to have Dr. Eleonora Teplinsky on the podcast. Dr. Teplinsky is a board certified medical oncologist who specializes in breast and gynecologic cancers. If you're not already following her, I encourage you to check out her Instagram, which is @drteplinsky. She shares a lot of wonderful information about breast cancer as well as other cancers. My favorite posts are the ones she does on lifestyle recommendations for cancer prevention as I think we are all becoming more aware of the environmental toxins that are affecting our health. She also has her own podcast, the Interlude podcast, where she talks to women living with cancer about their journeys. It's a really powerful and wonderful resource for anyone – at some point we will all know someone with cancer or help take care of someone with cancer. In this episode, we specifically focus on breast cancer. We talk about breast cancer screening, different modalities, lifestyle recommendations, breast cancer treatment, and so on and so forth.
Today, I speak with Kelly Hogan regarding nutrition and breast cancer prevention, in helping with undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, and nutrition during cancer survivorship. I'm also thrilled to learn that you don't have to always keep a food log of a RD to help you (I despise keeping food logs! Too time consuming! Let me just eat!). If you want to learn more about Kelly or work with her, please visit her website: kellyhoganhealth.com
Please welcome Dr. Abby Bales to "The Lady Doc Podcast." Professionally, Dr. Bales is a physical therapist specializing in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders with a special interest on return to sport around pregnancy (she's also, at baseline, an amazing physical therapist). However, I mainly wanted to talk to Dr. Abby (as I call her) about her experience as a patient with several chronic health conditions, multiple surgeries, and navigating an often confusing healthcare system. We talk about how she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, her numerous abdominal surgeries, her prophylactic mastectomy, and everything in between. I hope you enjoy and learn something!
It is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) awareness month and I wanted to have one of my friends, Sari Imberman, on the podcast to talk about her experience with PCOS. She has known she has had PCOS since her teens, which isn't typical for many women who are ultimately diagnosed with PCOS. She explains how she got diagnosed, how it impacted her teens and 20s, how she got pregnant with PCOS, and more. We also talk about how this ultimately led her into a career as a pediatric registered dietician. Sari is fun, honest, and witty. I hope you love and learn a lot from this conversation!
Today I speak with physical therapist, Kathleen Gassner. Kathleen is a physical therapist at Custom PT in New York City, which caters to runners of all abilities. I have several friends who are physical therapists and I can truly say that aside from strength training, regular physical therapy has kept me running. Aside from her own work with runners, Kathleen had a baby about 8 months ago and we talk about her experience with pelvic floor physical therapy and what getting back to running after a baby has been like. Thank you to Kathleen for joining me! Check her out on instagram (@katleeny) and check out Custom PT if you're in NYC! https://www.nycustompt.com
Welcome back to the Lady Doc Podcast! Stacy Tarver Patterson is an endometriosis warrior (#endowarrior) who shares her 15 year history with this debilitating disease with us. She also shares some of the more horrifying interactions she's had with health care providers as well as the good ones. Thank you, Stacy, for sharing so honestly with us! https://www.acog.org/womens-health/faqs/endometriosis
On today's episode, I talk with Erika Olson about her kidney stones, hypertension, and how she's navigated living a full live (business school! climbing Mt Kilamanjaro!) with chronic illnesses. In addition, the etiology of Erika's illnesses is largely not understood, and we talk about the emotions surrounding feeling like your body has let you down and isn't sending you the "danger" signals it normally should when you're sick. Erika has given me a lot of good insight from the patient perspective as I've gone from medical student to doctor. I hope you learn from her, as well!
Welcome to the VERY FIRST episode of "The Lady Doc Podcast." On this episode, I'm talking with the indomitable mother-daughter duo of Judi Donnelly and Jenny Donnelly Grimshaw. Judi is a 26 year breast cancer survivor who learned shortly after her cancer treatment that she had the BRCA1 mutation. Her daughter, Jenny, also carries the BRCA1 mutation (and is pregnant with her first child, due November 2021!). We talk about the circumstances that let to Judi getting genetic testing in the late 1990s, how Judi disclosed the news to both of her daughters, the differences in their experiences with genetic testing, and their advice to those who are fearful or unsure about getting genetic testing. We also talk a bit about Jenny's pregnancy, her process of doing IVF, and how she and Judi both felt about Jenny doing IVF to give her the family she's always wanted, but giving her children the gift of not having the BRCA mutation using pre-implantation genetic testing. I met these two through the running world (Jenny is one of my running idols) so we naturally talked a bit about running, too. If you want to hear more of their running story, I highly suggest listening to them on Ali Feller's Ali on the Run Podcast (episode 193).
