THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
Fall is here, and it's one of my favorite times to reset, slow down, and reconnect with what feels grounding and good. In this episode, I'm sharing my favorite fall things, from the foods that nourish your body to the cozy routines that support your mind and mood. You'll learn how to support your immune system naturally, eat in rhythm with the season, and bring more intention into your movement and daily routines. Think warm soups, slow walks, breathwork, and gratitude... the simple things that make this time of year feel balanced and alive.
In this episode, we're diving deep (literally and figuratively!) into one of the most important yet often misunderstood parts of our bodies: the pelvic floor. Joining us is the incredible Dr. Allison Oswald, a pelvic health specialist who helps women reconnect to their bodies through every stage of pregnancy, birth, and beyond. We unpack what the pelvic floor actually is, why it deserves your attention (hint: it does way more than just hold things in place), and how to support and strengthen it through mindful movement, breathwork, and awareness. We also talk about healing after birth, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, including ways to process and care for yourself after birth trauma. This episode couldn't have come at a better time it was recorded it just days before Teresa gave birth, and she ended up using many of Dr. Oswald's techniques during her own postpartum recovery! Have you ever said to yourself: “I know what I should be doing… but I just can't seem to do it”? Whether it's exercising, eating well, or taking 10 minutes for yourself, most moms struggle with follow-through — and it's not because you're lazy, unmotivated, or broken. The real issue isn't willpower. It's your mindset and your nervous system. In this episode of Pelvic Floor, Core & More, Dr. Desiree Cassell, pelvic floor physical therapist and women's health advocate, breaks down why so many moms get stuck in the gap between knowing and doing — and how to finally break the cycle. Because healing your body isn't just about what you do. It's about how supported, regulated, and empowered you feel while you're doing it.

THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
When women think about pelvic floor healing, most picture core work or maybe glute bridges. But here's the truth: your upper body strength has just as much to do with your core and pelvic floor as your abs or hips. In this episode of Pelvic Floor, Core & More, Dr. Desiree Cassell, pelvic floor physical therapist, explains why your shoulders, back, and arms matter more than you realize — and how strengthening them can actually protect your pelvic floor, improve your posture, and help you manage pressure through your entire core system. Because your daily life as a mom isn't just squats and kegels. It's carrying babies, pushing strollers, lifting car seats, hauling groceries, and sitting for feeding sessions. And if your upper body isn't supported, your core and pelvic floor take the hit.
What if you could take back control of your bladder, feel strong and supported from the inside out, and transform how you move through midlife, starting with your pelvic floor? This week, we’re going there. I’m joined by Kim Vopni, widely known as The Vagina Coach, a pioneer in pelvic health education, bestselling author, and founder of the Buff Muff Method. We break the silence around issues like incontinence, prolapse, and pelvic pain, topics often brushed off or suffered through in silence. Kim shares why pelvic health is central to longevity, energy, and confidence, and how women can ditch the shame and start healing. We talk about why Kegels are not a one-size-fits-all solution, the difference between hypertonic and hypotonic pelvic floors, and why habits like straining or skipping water can quietly sabotage your core. If you’ve ever leaked while laughing, or quietly wondered if what you're feeling is normal, this episode is your permission slip to ask questions, get answers, and reclaim your pelvic power. Key Takeaways: Pelvic health is essential for midlife vitality and long-term wellness Leakage, urgency, prolapse, and pain are common—but not inevitable Kegels aren’t a universal solution; some women need relaxation, not just strength Professional pelvic health evaluations are game-changing Constipation, dehydration and bathroom habits directly affect pelvic floor health Your feet and posture influence your pelvic alignment Education around pelvic health should start earlier and happen more often Shame and silence are the biggest barriers to healing Watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/4Rx14InFehESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a textOn this week's "from the vault" episode;A relatively short podcast. I mainly talk about why a program to heal your pelvic floor can not really be done/purchased online where as a program to heal Diastasis Recti can. There are some excellent pelvic floor specialists on Instagram and a lot of the information they give is very useful however I personally wouldn't recommend you invest in any of their programs without a physical examination first. In the news this week I briefly talk about an article one of my clients sent me. This article from the BBC about safety levels for PFAS, ( Perfluoroalkyl substances), of UK drinking water. I am trying to find someone to come onto the podcast and talk about householdchemicals, PFAs included, but still thought I'd mention it. The article is based on this episode of the, excellent, "Costing the Earth" program on BBC Radio4. Do check it out if you're UK based, Reminder; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles. So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering. Though I'm not terribly active on Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. I am however active on Threads so find me there! And, of course, you can always find us on our YouTube channel if you like your podcast in video form :) Visit healthypostnatalbody.com and get 3 months completely FREE access. Most women are told that leaking, prolapse, or back pain is just because their core is “weak.” Or that they need to do more kegels. But here's the truth: the real problem usually isn't weakness. It's pressure mismanagement. In this episode of Pelvic Floor, Core & More, Dr. Desiree Cassell, pelvic floor physical therapist, breaks down why pressure management inside your core is the missing piece no one is talking about — and why ignoring it keeps so many women stuck with symptoms like leaking, prolapse, and pain. If you've ever wondered why your exercises, kegels, or “getting stronger” haven't fully fixed your issues, this episode is going to be a game-changer.

In this episode, I'm sharing some real-life experiences and lessons learned that I think so many ostomates will connect with.First, I talk about my recent travel through airport security in Italy — and the unexpected moment when a security guard didn't understand what my ostomy pouch was. That experience reminded me how important it is to find ways to communicate across language barriers so we can advocate for ourselves with confidence.I also dive into the importance of pelvic floor therapy for ostomates. Since many of us no longer use certain muscles the same way, therapy can make a huge difference for things like bladder health, painful intercourse, and overall quality of life. I share a bit about my own journey, including how my therapist is helping me with adhesions — and why it's always essential to check with your doctor first before starting something new. Finally, I highlight Hollister's upgraded pouches and the improvements they've made to support comfort and confidence in daily life.✨ Whether you're traveling, navigating health challenges, or exploring new products, I hope this episode encourages you and reminds you that you're not alone.
When your pelvic floor let's you down, it can be easy to reach for your phone to find a kegel gadget or app that will fix it .. but, do we really need another gadget to tell us how our pelvic floor is doing? After an interesting conversation with a colleague, I'm breaking down the rise of pelvic floor tech — from kegel trainers to biofeedback devices — and asking a deeper question: what if the real solution isn't in the tech, but in your own connection with your body? While these devices can have their place, I'm ask you to press pause and consider this:✨ Your body already holds the wisdom (yes, it really does!).✨ You don't need a gadget to earn your connection back (it will only cost money and gather dust).✨ Trust, awareness, and consistency matter more than clever apps and expensive kits. This is a light-hearted but deeply empowering episode for any woman who's ever felt like her body is broken, disconnected, or needs ‘fixing.'

The conversation provides hope by highlighting how specialized pelvic floor physical therapy (PT) can be a highly effective treatment, offering personalized, non-invasive solutions to help women regain control and improve their quality of life. THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
Think you need intense workouts, endless kegels, or hours at the gym to heal your pelvic floor and core? Nope.
We know that you know your neuro clients have a pelvic floor… but are you doing anything to help it?? You may be surprised how many of your clients have weak, tight, spastic, or flaccid pelvic floors, and the issues arising from this may be preventing them from fully engaging in their lives. If you want to help but don't know where to start, this episode is for you! We break it down for the non-pelvic floor PT and give you the skinny on how to screen and incorporate an easy, functional progression of activities into what you're already doing with your neuro clients. Grace Weiland, PT, DPT, CAPP-PH, a physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor therapy, shares her expertise on an often overlooked but critical aspect of treating pelvic floor dysfunction in neurological rehabilitation. Working in a rural critical access hospital, Grace highlights the importance of pelvic floor health for all patients, not just those with specific pelvic issues. She explains that pelvic floor dysfunction can significantly impact quality of life, leading to social isolation and reduced participation in activities. Grace discusses how pelvic floor problems are common but not normal, emphasizing the need for healthcare providers to approach the topic professionally and sensitively. She offers practical strategies for screening and addressing pelvic floor issues, including breathing techniques, functional exercises, and subtle strengthening methods that don't require invasive interventions. The conversation reveals the interconnectedness of pelvic floor health with overall body mechanics, highlighting how exercises targeting stability, balance, and proper breathing can improve pelvic floor function. Grace will be presenting a detailed webinar on this topic during the upcoming NeuroSpark quadrimester, breaking down approaches for different neurological impairments and providing clinicians with valuable tools to support their patients' comprehensive rehabilitation. **A correction note from the episode: The pelvic floor co-activates when any of the following 4 muscles are activated: glute max, hip adductors, Transverse abdominus, obturator internus. Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) To get access to Grace's webinar go to www.joinneurospark.com to learn how to become a Sparky the next time NeuroSpark opens!
What if kegels aren't working for you? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the pelvic floor. I discuss the anatomy around the pelvic floor, common problems you might not realize are related to poor pelvic floor function, an old injury I had that caused asymmetries and tonal issues with my pelvic floor, why I think most pelvic floor rehabilitation like kegels aren't that successful, and why focusing on the reflexive control of the pelvic floor may be the more fruitful path. I discuss drills and exercises that can improve pelvic floor function that go beyond just voluntary contraction work, such as spinal mobility work, breathing drills and techniques, bilateral complex movements, vibration, vestibular drills, tongue drills, stacking, and more. This is a fantastic topic for applied neurology due to the reflexive nature of pelvic floor control and the often indirect paths you need to take to affect its function for the better. THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
You've probably heard the phrase “no pain, no gain.” But when it comes to your core and pelvic floor, that couldn't be further from the truth. The real magic doesn't happen during your workout — it happens during your recovery. In this episode of Pelvic Floor, Core & More, Dr. Desiree Cassell, pelvic floor physical therapist and women's health expert, breaks down why recovery is essential for healing, strength, and sustainability — and how skipping it could be holding you back or making your symptoms worse. Whether you're pregnant, postpartum, or years down the road, these tips will help you optimize recovery so you can finally feel strong, confident, and connected in your body again.
The pelvis, home to our reproductive, digestive, and eliminatory systems, is responsive to stress, pregnancy, birth, hormones, lifestyle, and trauma. When balanced, it supports vitality and ease. When out of balance, it can profoundly affect quality of life. Joining the conversation are two extraordinary practitioners: Dr. Tia Ukpe-Wallace, an orthopedic and pelvic health physical therapist, yoga teacher, and founder of Self-Care Physio, whose own pelvic floor challenges and pregnancy loss fueled her passion for empowering women with knowledge and healing practices. Krishna Dholakia, a nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, and yoga and mindfulness teacher. Through her practice Om and Spice Wellness, Krishna offers an integrative approach to women's health from preconception through menopause, weaving together nutrition, mindfulness, yoga, and bodywork. Together, they share insights from their upcoming Esalen workshop on pelvic health, covering pelvic floor anatomy, menstrual and sexual health, nutrition and digestion, mindfulness, yoga, and community-building practices. Their goal: to help participants increase knowledge, self-awareness, and literacy around pelvic and reproductive health while cultivating a supportive community and a lifelong toolkit of self-care practices. This conversation is guest hosted by Shira Levine, Esalen's Director of Communications and Storytelling, whose background spans documentary film, editorial journalism, and global communications with organizations ranging from the United Nations to leading print and digital outlets.
