In this episode, I sit down with pelvic floor physical therapist Mindy English to discuss what to look for when seeking a pelvic floor PT. This is a common question we receive, and we wanted to provide a nuanced conversation around it, especially for female athletes who may not realize how interconnected pelvic health is with overall movement, training, and long-term well-being. We also discuss what to expect in a pelvic floor PT appointment, why it's critical for practitioners to take a full-body approach, and how pelvic floor therapy can help athletes of all ages—whether they're dealing with postpartum recovery, leakage during workouts, or long-term pelvic health symptoms. More and more moms are learning about pelvic floor therapy—which is amazing. But one thing I hear all the time? “I was told I have a weak pelvic floor… so I guess I need to do more Kegels?”Not exactly. In this episode, we're unpacking what "pelvic floor strength" really means—and why it's so much more than just squeezing. We'll walk through the four key elements that make up true pelvic floor function:Function – How your pelvic floor supports movement, posture, and everyday tasks like jumping, running, or even dancing (especially when you're leaking mid-move).Alignment – Why ribcage and pelvic positioning matter, and how misalignment during daily activities (like bending over to bathe your kid) can lead to leaks.Strength – The surprising truth: most moms struggle more with relaxing their pelvic floor than contracting it. We'll share exercises that build real, balanced strength.Timing – Your pelvic floor needs to fire at the right time. We'll talk about what coordination really looks like and how to train it.If you've been told to “just do more Kegels,” this episode will shift your whole perspective—and give you tools that actually make a differenceStrong Moms, Stronger You!Mothers Day SpecialBook your free 30-minute discovery call to chat about your goals and ways I can support you!Thank you so much for checking out this The Resilient Body Podcast episode. Ever sneezed and leaked a little? Felt an urgent need to use the bathroom the moment your key touches your front door? You're not alone—and contrary to what many believe, these symptoms aren't just normal parts of aging or motherhood that you have to accept. In this conversation with Dr. Bijal Toprani, physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor health, we unpack the hidden world of pelvic floor function and dysfunction that affects up to one-third of women. Dr. Toprani demystifies what exactly the pelvic floor is (those muscles extending from pubic bone to tailbone), the common issues that arise (from various types of urinary incontinence to pelvic pain), and why waiting an average of six years to seek help is unnecessarily prolonging your discomfort. We challenge widespread misconceptions, including the belief that Kegels are the universal solution (they can actually worsen certain conditions!) and explore the fascinating connection between stress, trauma, and pelvic tension. Most importantly, Dr. Toprani emphasizes that these conditions are highly treatable, with many patients seeing a 50% reduction in symptoms within just three months of consistent therapy. For Health Select of Texas and Consumer-Directed Health Select participants, there's now a convenient virtual option through Hinge Health that eliminates the typical three-month wait to see a specialist. Whether you're experiencing issues during pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, or any stage of life, this episode delivers practical insights that can transform your relationship with your pelvic floor and overall quality of life.Take the first step toward addressing what's been normalized but shouldn't be. Your pelvic floor deserves attention, and relief is more accessible than you might think. Listen, learn, and reclaim control of this crucial but often overlooked aspect of your wellbeing.Learn more about Hing Health's Pelvic Floor program and see if you may be eligible through the HealthSelect website.

So many women put their trust in the fitness industry and “train harder” without ever being shown how to support the deep core — especially the pelvic floor. In this episode, we explore how a dedicated fitness routine was actually making a clients pelvic health symptoms worse — and what we did to turn that around. In todays episode I explore: ✅ How traditional ab work (like crunching and planking) can stress your bladder and pelvic floor ✅ What “functional core work” really looks and feels like ✅ Why you should never feel ashamed to speak up to your trainer “I need to train in a way that supports my pelvic floor” ✅ The role of breath, pressure, and posture in pelvic floor-friendly movement ✅ Why your body isn't broken — and how to get back to feeling connectedLet's ditch the shame and speak up for women's bodies to build strength from the inside out.
I have always endorsed my experience with pelvic floor therapy after having kids. It was life-changing, and insurance covered it. (Score.) But what if I told you that pelvic floor therapy wasn't just for women who have had babies? What if I told you pelvic floor therapy could be for men too? This week on the podcast, we talked to Dr. Danielle Owens, a physical therapist and CAPP-Pelvic certified specialist. While pelvic health is typically associated with women, Dr. Owens stresses that men also face pelvic floor dysfunctions and can benefit greatly from therapy. We discuss why pelvic floor therapy is important, and we both work our pelvic floor muscles live on-air. Also, listen if you want to never look at blueberry the same again. (Although very helpful!)We end the show discussing if we are too old for day trips, what a ‘darty' is, and we take more of your calls on the laugh line. (Please vote if you think we should take a day trip to Paris!) What do you want to hear us talk about? Leave us a voicemail at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. This week, Sarah is joined by none other than The Vagina Whisperer herself—Dr. Sara Reardon, a board-certified pelvic floor physical therapist, mom of two, and author of the upcoming book Floored: A Woman's Guide to Pelvic Floor Health at Every Age & Stage, hitting shelves this June. In this episode we'll dive into what you can do during pregnancy and birth to help prevent tearing and protect your pelvic floor, as well as common postpartum issues—whether you delivered vaginally or via C-section. Send us a textThis week I am a little bit upset. Not about the first subject which follows a question about what type of exercise, and at which intensity, is safe to do during pregnancy. That's a great question and a doddle to answer :)But I'm upset about the single worst Instagram video I have seen from someone working with babies. Here it is for those of you who want to have a look. The Osteopath in the video is making LOADS of dumb, and I do mean idiotic, claims about the effects of a C-section on a baby's spine and it's health. He claims the "lumbar spine is reversed" or "missing" and that is clearly complete and utter nonsense. But the video has 400k likes and this grifter has 600k followers. So I go over some of the idiotic claims people make online to scare those of you wanting, or needing, a C-section into parting with your money. And then there's a bit of jazz to calm me down :)As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles! So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering. This means you can sign up after your first child, use the program and recover and then still have access after giving birth to child 2 and 3!None of this "pay X amount a year" nonsense, once you've paid..you've paid! This makes HPNB not just the most efficient and complete post-partum recovery program, it's also BY FAR the best value.Though I'm not terribly active on Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
Having a strong brace is important for lifting heavy weights. It is a critical part of CrossFit, powerlifting and weightlifting. Not to mention just life. We use bracing when we move couches, pick up our kiddos etc. Weightlifting belts are a performance aid that really helps us to create stiffness through our midline to lift more as well. We did an entire video on it on our YouTube channel. Knowing HOW to brace and use a weightlifting belt though is super important for our pelvic floors AND our performance. 50% of women pee when they lift heavy weights. That is a massive number! But there is things we can do about it. We break it all down in this week's podcast episode If youre interested in learning specifica considerations for returning to bracing postpartum, check out our Barbells after Babies Webinar free. ___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes.
