THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
Think you need intense workouts, endless kegels, or hours at the gym to heal your pelvic floor and core? Nope.
We know that you know your neuro clients have a pelvic floor… but are you doing anything to help it?? You may be surprised how many of your clients have weak, tight, spastic, or flaccid pelvic floors, and the issues arising from this may be preventing them from fully engaging in their lives. If you want to help but don't know where to start, this episode is for you! We break it down for the non-pelvic floor PT and give you the skinny on how to screen and incorporate an easy, functional progression of activities into what you're already doing with your neuro clients. Grace Weiland, PT, DPT, CAPP-PH, a physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor therapy, shares her expertise on an often overlooked but critical aspect of treating pelvic floor dysfunction in neurological rehabilitation. Working in a rural critical access hospital, Grace highlights the importance of pelvic floor health for all patients, not just those with specific pelvic issues. She explains that pelvic floor dysfunction can significantly impact quality of life, leading to social isolation and reduced participation in activities. Grace discusses how pelvic floor problems are common but not normal, emphasizing the need for healthcare providers to approach the topic professionally and sensitively. She offers practical strategies for screening and addressing pelvic floor issues, including breathing techniques, functional exercises, and subtle strengthening methods that don't require invasive interventions. The conversation reveals the interconnectedness of pelvic floor health with overall body mechanics, highlighting how exercises targeting stability, balance, and proper breathing can improve pelvic floor function. Grace will be presenting a detailed webinar on this topic during the upcoming NeuroSpark quadrimester, breaking down approaches for different neurological impairments and providing clinicians with valuable tools to support their patients' comprehensive rehabilitation. **A correction note from the episode: The pelvic floor co-activates when any of the following 4 muscles are activated: glute max, hip adductors, Transverse abdominus, obturator internus. Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) To get access to Grace's webinar go to www.joinneurospark.com to learn how to become a Sparky the next time NeuroSpark opens!
What if kegels aren't working for you? In this episode, I speak with my podcast producer, Tony, all about the pelvic floor. I discuss the anatomy around the pelvic floor, common problems you might not realize are related to poor pelvic floor function, an old injury I had that caused asymmetries and tonal issues with my pelvic floor, why I think most pelvic floor rehabilitation like kegels aren't that successful, and why focusing on the reflexive control of the pelvic floor may be the more fruitful path. I discuss drills and exercises that can improve pelvic floor function that go beyond just voluntary contraction work, such as spinal mobility work, breathing drills and techniques, bilateral complex movements, vibration, vestibular drills, tongue drills, stacking, and more. This is a fantastic topic for applied neurology due to the reflexive nature of pelvic floor control and the often indirect paths you need to take to affect its function for the better. You've probably heard the phrase “no pain, no gain.” But when it comes to your core and pelvic floor, that couldn't be further from the truth. The real magic doesn't happen during your workout — it happens during your recovery. In this episode of Pelvic Floor, Core & More, Dr. Desiree Cassell, pelvic floor physical therapist and women's health expert, breaks down why recovery is essential for healing, strength, and sustainability — and how skipping it could be holding you back or making your symptoms worse. Whether you're pregnant, postpartum, or years down the road, these tips will help you optimize recovery so you can finally feel strong, confident, and connected in your body again.
The pelvis, home to our reproductive, digestive, and eliminatory systems, is responsive to stress, pregnancy, birth, hormones, lifestyle, and trauma. When balanced, it supports vitality and ease. When out of balance, it can profoundly affect quality of life. Joining the conversation are two extraordinary practitioners: Dr. Tia Ukpe-Wallace, an orthopedic and pelvic health physical therapist, yoga teacher, and founder of Self-Care Physio, whose own pelvic floor challenges and pregnancy loss fueled her passion for empowering women with knowledge and healing practices. Krishna Dholakia, a nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, and yoga and mindfulness teacher. Through her practice Om and Spice Wellness, Krishna offers an integrative approach to women's health from preconception through menopause, weaving together nutrition, mindfulness, yoga, and bodywork. Together, they share insights from their upcoming Esalen workshop on pelvic health, covering pelvic floor anatomy, menstrual and sexual health, nutrition and digestion, mindfulness, yoga, and community-building practices. Their goal: to help participants increase knowledge, self-awareness, and literacy around pelvic and reproductive health while cultivating a supportive community and a lifelong toolkit of self-care practices. This conversation is guest hosted by Shira Levine, Esalen's Director of Communications and Storytelling, whose background spans documentary film, editorial journalism, and global communications with organizations ranging from the United Nations to leading print and digital outlets. Are you pregnant and feeling unsure about how to exercise safely without putting yourself — or your baby — at risk? Maybe you've heard conflicting advice like “just keep doing what you were doing” or “only walk and stretch” and now you're stuck wondering what's actually safe. In this episode of Pelvic Floor, Core & More, I'm breaking down everything you need to know about prenatal fitness so you can move with confidence, stay strong throughout pregnancy, and prepare your body for a smoother birth and postpartum recovery. No one told me that postpartum recovery isn't just about “getting back to normal.” It's about rebuilding from the inside out, pelvic floor, core, energy, mindset, and that what you do (and don't do) in those early days matters more than you think. That's why I brought Dr. Jessica London, pelvic floor therapist and mama's best friend in recovery, on the podcast to walk you through exactly what's happening in your body and how to move forward, without overdoing it. (And she was kind enough to share her Core Recovery Guide with our community!) Postpartum healing is deeply connected to how you move, rest, and nourish yourself right now. Pushing too hard can set you back, but intentional movement, pelvic floor awareness, and smart recovery practices can actually make you stronger than before. Whether you're 2 days, 2 months, or 2 years postpartum, this episode gives you a roadmap for recovery that lasts.Show Notes Here!Where to Find Jessica: Instagram Website PodcastLinks Mentioned:Episode #275 - Pelvic Floor 101: What Every New Mom Needs to Know with Dr. Jessica LondonThe Core Recovery Guide My Essential Birth CourseMy Essential Birth Postpartum CourseMy Essential Birth InstagramGET IN TOUCH!
