Nora O'Connor is a super collaborator, someone who loves singing harmonies and makes everyone sound good. She's a member of the Chicago all-star group the Flat Five and a formidable singer-songwriter in her own right, as her 2022 solo album, My Heart, her first in 18 years, reminded us. Here she reflects on her life as “a music worker,” including what she's learned from performing with such artists as the Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Mavis Staples, Andrew Bird, the New Pornographers and Neko Case. How has she has balanced her career and family life—and would a male performer have faced similar challenges? What ambitions does she have for herself and the Flat Five? What's the secret behind the alchemy she creates with frequent collaborator/Flat Five bandmate Kelly Hogan? And what role has the Chicago club the Hideout played in her musical life?

The ancient Greeks often told of the Sirens, who with their beautiful songs of... 69'ing... would cause you to cut your nipples off. And they were right! In our first truly Aqua Teen-less episode, Carl spends some time with his new kinky mythological neighbors. What they're into isn't Carl's cup of tea... but his credit card is maxed out so he has no other option. Dave Willis briefly joins us to talk about getting John Kruk, Kelly Hogan, and Neko Case on this nipple-centric episode. We're also getting into this episode's Hellraiser influence, Carl's spinoff series "I'm Pissed," and how Markula steals the show on this episode. Other topics discussed include the spoof films of the aughts (and why they died), Robert Plant's dick outline, getting low to Low, a swashbuckling MMORPG that refuses to die, and why wooden paneling truly is the best feature.   References: • Matt Maiellaro's Meat Kingdom ft. Welcome to my interview with Emily Harper where she discusses her health journey, which includes previous conditions such as shingles, Crohn's disease, IBS, temporomandibular joint issues, gastroesophageal reflux disease, depression, and anxiety. She explains that she dealt with these issues through various diets and medications before discovering the carnivore diet and that was the one that seemed to fix them all!She also mentions that she has struggled with her weight but has seen great improvements while on the carnivore diet. Emily also talks about being a living kidney donor. She had struggled with weight issues since childhood and had tried multiple diets and diet pills. She was also dealing with Crohn's disease and type 2 diabetes. In June 2020, she came across carnivore and decided to give it a try. She struggled to stick with it but eventually joined Kelly Hogan's coaching program. In 2021, she went through a messy breakup and turned to emotional eating.Emily talks about how she went from 210 lbs to 160lbs in nine months after following a carnivorous diet for six and a half months. She also talks about how she started eating carnivorous and how it influenced her overall well-being. And that while your body constantly renews itself - the lining of your gut in 2 - 4 days; all your red blood cells in 40 - there is one and only one body part you keep from birth to death."I am also interested in the expression of emotion in the voice, especially laughter,” writes Scott, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and director of the Institute for Cognitive at Neuroscience at University College in London, who joins me to talk about: * “The good glue” that is laughter* Why left-handed people pay attention to the world differently* “Synaptic exuberance,” or humans' terrific inventiveness and flexibility in adapting to different environments, all of which relies on our brains' ability to change* The endorphin rush that made Scott fall backwards into a bath while attempting to take off her coat* The reason my brain once created the sound of a hard hat striking cementAnd much more! I spoke with Dr. Elisabeth Bright, Dr. Lisa Wiedeman, Kelly Hogan, and Dr. Robert Kiltz. The most interesting takeaway is that women benefit from following high-fat Carnivore fat. Fat is very nourishing to our body, brain, and hormones, and when we get enough fat, like 70/30 or 80/20, this will allow our body to lower inflammation and easily lose body fat. In this episode, we ask Drs. Hogan and Sathy how they approach the use of learning research and translate it to their audiences. They discuss the structural impediments in higher education that often prevent bringing this research to practice, and how these practices might be changed. Kelly Hogan is Associate Dean of Instructional Innovation and a STEM Teaching Professor in Biology, and Viji Sathy is Associate Dean for Evaluation and Assessment and a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill.ResourcesInclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom (2022) by Kelly Hogan and Viji SathyThe L Word (Inside Higher Ed, December 16, 2022) by Jody Greene Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) Network The work of Kimberly Tanner

Carnivore Diet

I interviewed 50 Carnivore experts in 2022. The stars of this year were Dr Shawn Baker, Dr Anthony Chaffee, Kelly Hogan, and Dr Elisabeth Bright, and wow... I learnt a lot! There were many surprises, but the most startling of all was how much I learned about the importance of fat. The experts were adamant that we should be eating more fat, especially saturated fats like butter and ghee. They argued that this is what makes us human and it's what our bodies need to thrive. They said that fatty meat is so important—and fruit and nut consumption should be minimized because they're toxic (at least in large quantities). The experts also told me why fasting doesn't work: it causes a loss of muscle protein which slows down your metabolism by around 10% per day (compared with if you didn't fast). This can result in weight gain over time so it's not recommended unless you want to lose weight very slowly over months or years! It seems obvious now but I didn't know this before talking with these experts. And there's so much evidence for Carnivore If you're considering Carnivore, there's a lot of evidence backing it up. Here are some things that the experts told me: Carnivore is great for weight loss. One study found that people on a carnivorous diet lost an average of 15 pounds in eight weeks—and most participants were able to keep the fat off after they switched to a vegetarian or omnivorous diet again. Another study found that eating meat was more effective than other diets at reducing body mass index (BMI), even without exercise. Carnivore is good for your mental health, too! A third study found that people who ate more meat had better moods and higher self-esteem compared with those who ate fewer animal products, while another showed how beneficial it can be for those suffering from depression or anxiety. People on carnivorous diets also reported improved physical health outcomes like lower cholesterol levels and triglyceride counts, as well as reduced inflammation markers like C-reactive protein (CRP). Kelly Hogan is fantastic singer who sounds equally at home singing lead or providing sublime harmonies with Mavis Staples, Neko Case, the Decemberists and her fellow members of the Flat Five. She delivered a torchy jazz-twang-rock hybrid with the Jody Grind, her early '90s band from Atlanta's Cabbagetown neighborhood, before moving to Chicago and proving in many contexts that she can sing anything. Chatting in person with her cuddly dogs Eddie and Ernie at her side, Hogan tells stories of tragedy and comedy, the futility of trying to abandon music in Chicago and the joy of discovering the perfect harmony partner. Everyone loves working with Hogan, and when you hear her sing—or talk—you understand why.

CDs have been downloaded in over 25 countries worldwide.   Joey's Song was started in 2010 following the death of four-year-old Joey Gomoll, who passed one week shy of his fifth birthday. Joey suffered from a rare and debilitating form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome. Dravet's caused persistent seizures which were never able to be controlled through medications leading to severe learning disabilities. While Dravet's robbed Joey of the ability to speak, Joey remained a happy and fun-loving child. He was happiest when music was playing, allowing him to hum, drum, and sing in his own way. To be present when music was playing meant only one thing, that Joey would soon have you dancing and enjoying the music with him.

Kelly Hogan has been a strict carnivore for 12.5 years, eating mostly beef, some salt and water. Like many of us she experienced binge eating disorder and sugar addiction and has cured this through the carnivore diet. What is a binge eating disorder? Binging eating disorder is a pattern of overconsuming typically processed carbohydrates, then restricting and binging again. It is a repetitive cycle that causes physical and mental distress. Typically binge eating comes with body images issues, and childhood trauma and the pattern keeps happening until you solve the root cause How can the carnivore diet help with binge eating disorders? The carnivore diet is a zero-carb diet and is packed full of nutrients. Typically when we binge, we overeat on sugar and carbs; that also makes sugar addiction worse as well. This was my experience in my 20s. Over-consuming carbs and restricting what I was eating, over-exercising, and calorie counting as well. The carnivore diet takes away the addictive nature of many processed foods. Meat is truly healing and somewhat benign when it comes to addiction. On this week's episode of The Diet Obsessed Podcast, I review a recent podcast I got introduced to by a listener, it's called "Squats and Margaritas" from host Erin Washington.Erin interviewed a person named Kelly Hogan, who has lost over 100lbs and maintained it for over 15 years by following the "Carnivore Diet."I had never heard of the Carnivore Diet before, so I was fascinated to learn about it.  Kelly describes herself as having an addiction to sugar and found she was able to maintain control of her weight when she ONLY ate meat and water.   She cut out all vegetables, all sugar-free gum, candy, diet soda...etc and has found this is a lifestyle that works for her.  This type of diet would  NEVER work for me, but I was absolutely riveted by this interview and how Kelly has been able to stick to it for so long.Kelly is brutally honest, she's not trying to convince anyone else to eat this way, she's just sharing what works for her.If this topic interests you, download the Diet Obsessed Podcast and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe!Follow me on Instagram @thedietobsessedpodcast

Kelly Hogan has been on a zero carb, carnivore lifestyle for 8+ years, a total of 9 years this October. She lost 130 lbs following a low carb or ketogenic diet for 5 years, and then eventually reduced carbs to zero in order to relieve carb cravings and food addiction that she was dealing with. Vanessa and Kelly discuss her story in full as well as how good it is and feels to eat high fat foods, tuning into your body and listening to what it wants, how Kelly eats daily on her zero carb, carnivore diet, and so much more! "I'm happy for anyone that is able to reduce their carb and sugar intake in ANY way, even if they aren't eating a zero-carb diet! If you are able to feel amazing while eating some vegetables, then that's great! I had great success eating a low-carb diet, but found that it became even easier and more effective when I reduced my carbs even further." - Kelly Hogan www.myzerocarblife.com More on the 28 Day Ketogenic Girl Challenge: www.ketogenicgirl.com Link for the free e-book: https://www.ketogenicgirl.com/pages/free-ebook

This week's episode is a conversation with podcast host/artist/musician Rich Wentworth. He is co-creator of the Hadron Gospel Hour podcast, a serialized sci-fi/comedy show about the adventures of a scientist who accidentally blows up the multiverse working on a way to weaponize the Hadron Collider. He and his partner Mike, played by co-creator Michael McQuilkin, jump in and out of the rift to visit different timelines and occasionally do battle with evil. The podcast also features sketch comedy, horror, and original music – Wentworth and McQuilkin are both musicians and songwriters. It's a hell of a good time, and an incredibly immersive audio environment. Wentworth is also an accomplished graphic artist. He's done album covers for Brian Setzer and comic book covers for IDW's ROM title and, it should be mentioned, designed the Department of Tangents logo. In the conversation, we talk about Wentworth's artistic influences and his aspirations in comics, which may include a Hadron adaptation somewhere down the line. We also get into how the Young Ones series influenced Hadron, the humanism of the Muppets, and so much more. Find out more about the podcast at the Hadron Gospel Hour site, and about Wentworth's art at his Spy Island Industries site. This episode also marks the two-year anniversary of the Department of Tangents Podcast. It kicked off on March 18, 2016 with EP1 featuring comedian and author Brian Kiley, whom I interviewed on the Universal lot in Los Angles where he works on Conan, and a featured track from musician Brendan Boogie, who would pop up again in EP6 as a guest talking about music and his latest movie, Sundown. It has been a joy to do this, and there is a lot more on the way – new stuff in featured tracks, including more audiobook excerpts, more short horror fiction, and of course, more interviews. Our featured track this week is “Kindness of Strangers” from Courtney Marie Andrews' new album May Your Kindness Remain, out today, March 23. Andrews has a rich, powerful voice, and this is an album to get excited about. Recommended if you like Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, Jason Isbell, or Kathleen Edwards. Take a listen and check out Andrews at www.courtneymarieandrews.com.

This took Matt way from the woods and back to study Sustainable Education from Portland State University. After this introduction they lead into the first two Zones of the Service and Action for Place-based Social Organization framework. Zone I is the living labratory: the people, activities, and efforts taking place at Jean's Farm in the urban environment of Portland. Zone II, which draws this piece to a close, is the demonstration of the lab, integrating the work of Mother Earth School and IPEC into the local community through various partnerships so that the organization can be as inclusive as possible. This integration is vital to the continued work of IPEC, whether in the home town of Portland, or in any other community they teach. Expect Part II on February 28, 2017. Radical Roots is a certified organic farm designed and implemented using permaculture principles, as Lee and Dave are both trained permaculture practitioners. With just five acres the O'Neill's and their five annual interns produce over sixty, yes sixty, thousand pounds of food during the CSA season, as well as tens of thousands of plants, from seed, for their nursery business. I like interviewing farmers, particularly those engaged in ecological design and permaculture, because there are numerous ways to get started. Lee and Dave began by WWOOFing for numerous years, including on after they got married. My friend Erin Harvey worked at coops and then rented land. Wayne Herring started by borrowing space from family before purchasing. For anyone who wants to farm and do it in a way that benefits earth, there are many different ways to get started. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest today is Bryce Ruddock, a permaculture practitioner and co-author, along with Wayne Weiseman and Daniel Halsey, of Integrated Forest Gardening. After speaking with Bryce and reading the book I find him to be a guru on creating functional plant guilds. We talk about that topic as well as how to discover ecological niches and system mimics so that we can adapt our designs to ever changing conditions, whether they arise from climate change, disease, or simply because a chipmunk or raccoon does not like a particular plant. In this interview I mention natural heritage programs. What I was refer to is a specific program that collects and provides information about important natural resources. These are in cooperation with the Nature Serve network covering Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. The Pennsylvania Heritage site was a go to reference I used repeatedly in my resources management program and is a useful resource for permaculture practitioners. The state specific site for me includes material on local plant communities, inventories at the county level of various plants and animals, species lists for the state, as well as ongoing projects and publications. It is worth looking for this kind of program in your area as the wealth of information is a great for your ongoing research when creating a design. A link to the PA site and NatureServe are in the show notes. That ongoing research and education is important because we can't take a Permaculture Design Course and think that is enough. Something one of my teachers imparted on me was that the PDC is just a beginning, our first step. From there we need to develop a niche based on our interests and passions, something David Holmgren recommended, to really know what it is we are doing, to have relevant experience, and be the experts in our areas of interest. In turn we can find people of like mind and take permaculture further. To be able to show examples that work anywhere in the world, and at the same time have the flexibility in our thoughts and a depth of understanding that we can answer questions truthfully. Be willing to say, “I don't know,” or, “I haven't done that before,” and a willingness to find a real solution. Something else Bryce mentioned was building resilience groups. Resilience groups, as presented at Resilience.org, are a way to build connections that coincide nicely with the transition movement. Resilience groups are a broad umbrella under which we can connect with other people on various topics including the transition movement, farm to school initiatives, and the efforts of Interfaith Power and Light. If you are in an area and considering starting a transition group or other organization to create a more bountiful world, definitely look to see if there are any resilience efforts underway in your area. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest for this episode is Craig Sponholtz, a permaculture practitioner who operates Watershed Artisans. One of Craig's specialties is in building regenerative earthworks to capture water and restore degraded land, which forms the basis for our conversation today. What I like about this conversation with Craig is the role we have as designers to act as preservers of the land. We can use the design tools presented in permaculture to create solutions that stop erosion with structures built from natural materials that harvest water by slowing it, spreading it, and sinking it, all while keeping that water from cutting through the earth. Craig does this in a way that doesn't disrupt the natural flow of water, but takes the path into account. For all of the avocation for the use of particular technique, this approach takes us back to observing the landscape first, and deciding on what is most appropriate rather than looking for a one-size fits all solution. The strategy of water harvesting leads to a number of techniques. Some that Craig mentioned include check dams, one rock dams, rock mulches, and zuni bowls. In the show notes you'll find a link to a document Craig made, along with Avery Anderson, that explains these techniques in detail, and one other called media luna. I also found a nice piece written by Bill Zeedyk about induced meandering. For those of you who have a copy of Mollison's Designers' manual, Chapter 7 Section 3 includes a number of great techniques as well.
