What questions should you be asking the people you love while you still can? That's the thread running through this conversation with Dorothy Roberts, whose memoir The Mixed Marriage Projectstarted with a stack of boxes. After her parents passed, Dorothy opened them and found nearly 500 interviews her white father had conducted with interracial couples in Chicago, beginning in 1937, almost two decades before he married her Black mother. Inside were wild parties, a nudist camp, a turn-of-the-century club for mixed couples, and a file labeled number 224 that turned out to be about her.We talk about the interviews her father never published and the book contracts he kept walking away from, why she hid her father's whiteness from her Black classmates at Yale, and the painful stereotypes that surfaced even inside a club devoted to interracial marriage. We get into the big question at the heart of the memoir too: whether love, the everyday intimate kind, can actually dismantle racism. Spoiler, it's complicated.Dorothy Roberts is a scholar, professor, and author of five books on race, gender, and the systems that devalue Black women and mothers. The Mixed Marriage Project is her first memoir, built from the nearly 500 interviews her father left behind. What would it mean to build women's sports around women's bodies? This week, my friend Becca returns to discuss Lauren Fleshman's memoir "Good for a Girl". What starts as a running memoir quickly reveals itself as something far bigger: an investigation into the science of female puberty and athletics, the eating disorder epidemic inside women's collegiate and professional sports, and one woman's relentless fight to change a sport she loves from the inside out. We discuss Lauren's unconventional path to running, the ways puberty has been treated as "the one injury a girl can't come back from," the NCAA's staggering lack of policy around eating disorders in women's athletics, Lauren's famous Nike "Objectify Me" campaign, and the ways female athletes are still being failed by the systems built to protect them. This episode is for every woman who was ever told she was good — for a girl. The runners, the former athletes, the moms of daughters in sports, and anyone who has ever felt their body was working against them instead of for them.If this conversation resonated with you, the best thing you can do is share it with a friend who needs to hear it, and rate and review the show wherever you listen. What would change if women stopped being silent about the hardest parts of their lives? This week, I sit down with psychologist, author, and advocate Dr. Jessica Zucker, the woman behind the viral #IHadAMiscarriage movement, to discuss her memoir I Had a Miscarriage and her newest book Normalize It: Upending the Silence, Stigma, and Shame That Shape Women's Lives.TW: Infant loss, pregnancy lossJessica shares the story behind her 16-week miscarriage, how it deepened her already decade-long clinical work in women's reproductive and maternal mental health, and why she felt compelled to bring that conversation into the public sphere. We also dig into why so many women default to self-blame after pregnancy loss, how our culture has taught us to minimize our grief, and why avoiding painful emotions can be far more destructive than actually feeling them. Plus these big questions: Can pleasure and grief coexist? What does it mean to truly honor a loss? And why do the people who most deserve joy so often feel the least entitled to it?Come for the conversation about pregnancy loss and women's shame. Stay for the moment Alex and Jessica unpack why grief avoidance, not grief itself, is what really derails us, and the simple, no-excuse practice Jessica recommends for anyone who doesn't have time to fall apart.Warm, honest, and full of gentle permission slips, this conversation is for anyone who has ever shrunk their pain to make others more comfortable — which is probably all of us.Purchase Jessica's Books:Normalize It!I had a MiscarriageFind Jessica!Dr. Jessica Zucker's website: drjessicazucker.comHer Instagram: @IHadAMiscarriageSupport the show:On PatreonBuy us a bookBuy cute merchSubscribe to the Babes in Bookland SubstackConnect with us and suggest a great memoir!Follow us on instagram! @babesinbooklandpod Thank you for listening!Xx, Alex Hosted on Acast. Babes, this episode is so good because you are going to hear directly from a few Yummy Mummy alum who were exactly where you might be right now: doubting, scared, stuck, confused, and wondering if losing weight for the last time is really possible for them. And the answer is yes. Borrow their belief today. In this episode, I'm bringing you inside day five of the Summer of Me challenge with a Yummy Mummy panel. These women share what life felt like before the Yummy Mummy Experience, what changed after they joined, how much weight they lost, and the real transformation that happened beyond the scale. You'll hear from women who lost 32, 45, 50, 53, and 60 pounds. But even more than that, you'll hear what it feels like to stop living from the sidelines, stop hiding from pictures, stop fearing vacations, stop being mean to yourself, and start actually living your beautiful life. One of my favorite lines from the whole episode is: “I had a really beautiful life. I just wasn't living it.” If that hits you in the chest, this one is for you.Listen in to hear:- Why the scale is neutral and how to stop making it mean something about your worth- What it looks like to use allow power instead of white-knuckled willpower- How real Yummy Mummy clients lost weight without doing extreme, miserable diet things- Why community, coaching, and support make permanent weight loss feel possible- How to talk to your partner about investing in yourself- Why the cost of not doing this work can be bigger than the price of joining- What changes when you stop emotional eating, people-pleasing eating, and “starting over Monday”- Why balancing your hunger hormones and creating your custom plan actually works long-termAnd babe, doors are open for the May 2026 cohort of the Yummy Mummy Experience. If you are ready to make this the year you lose weight for the last time, go to lauraconley.com and book your call.If you already know you're in and don't need a call, email me at laura@lauraconley.com and we'll get you signed up. Hi hi! I have a mixed bag solo for you from the foot of my bed with a little bit of everything: my recent trip to Costa Rica, adult friendship anxiety, getting time away from all the usual routines of life and motherhood, screaming under a waterfall....and then straight back to loading the dishwasher and answering school emails. But seriously, this trip to Costa Rica with a group of women I didn't know so well was way outside my comfort zone, and it truly cracked me open in the best way. Plus, the acts that stood out at Hilarity for Charity, my latest Bravo thoughts, finishing out the school year with Sonny, and how I'm all of a sudden a nap person. Love you all! Kate Quinn has a rare talent. She can drop you into another time period so completely that you forget you're reading, then hit you with a detail that makes you realize how much of women's history has been ignored, softened, or simply left out. In our first Friday Fiction episode, I sit down with the New York Times bestselling author behind her newest release, The Astral Library, The Briar Club, The Alice Network, The Rose Code, and my personal favorite, The Diamond Eye to talk about where that power comes from and what it costs to do it well.We start with the origin story that shaped everything, a librarian mom who became her first reader and a dad who quietly modeled what real partnership looks like. From there, we get honest about the vulnerability of sharing drafts, the weird confidence a writer has to carry, and why deadlines can be a gift. Kate also walks through the creative leap into magical realism with The Astral Library, plus the nerves of releasing something new when readers expect a certain kind of historical fiction. We also dig into research ethics and critical thinking, from spotting propaganda in memoirs to reading for bias and noticing what a source refuses to say. If you love libraries, hate book bans, write fiction, or just want a smarter way to read history, this conversation is for you!!Subscribe for more author interviews, share this with a reader who loves historical fiction, and leave a rating and review so more book people can find Babes in Bookland.Thank you! Are you selfish?“Selfish” is supposed to be the insult that ends the conversation, especially for women who were raised to be helpful, agreeable, and endlessly available. We sit down with author Kerry Docherty to pull that word apart and rebuild it into something sharper and more useful: self-awareness, honest boundaries, and the courage to admit what you want before you burn out trying to be “good.” Her memoir, Selfish, becomes the jumping-off point for a raw talk about what it costs to keep giving yourself away and why telling the truth can be both selfish and deeply generous. We dig into the trap of likability and the ways girls learn early to smooth everything over, including their own anger and ambition. Kerry reflects on privilege and what she has learned from people who have had to live more openly because the world already judges them. We also get practical about modern “self-care,” from doomscrolling dopamine to the quieter work of choosing what actually makes you feel alive, plus what it looks like to model emotional language and bodily autonomy for your kids. Then the conversation turns toward marriage, work, and longing. Kerry shares what it was like to build the Faherty clothing brand with her husband and his twin brother, how business can strain intimacy, and why writing a memoir is an “act of betrayal” even when it is also an act of love. She opens up about “Beau,” an emotional entanglement that exposes dormant creativity and desire, and we explore a reframe of partnership as something you choose every day rather than a life sentence you simply endure. If this conversation makes you uncomfortable, we think that is the point. Part 2 of Hebrews (chapters 8 through 13), shifts from explaining who Jesus is to showing what His work means for us. These chapters highlight the new covenant. Jesus is our perfect High Priest who opened a better way to approach God, through His once-for-all sacrifice. And God's law is now written on our hearts and in our minds.Chapter 11 is commonly known as "the faith chapter." This one hit me hard. It starts off well but then gets difficult to read. So many before us risked their lives and suffered in order to further the gospel and the message of the love of Christ. The book ends with practical encouragement: hold fast, run with perseverance, and fix your eyes on Jesus. We are reading Hebrews 8 through 13.Thank you to Victoria, Anne, Babes on Boards, Jeff, Ellen, Colleen, Robin, Christina, Stephanie, and Scott for your support! Brandy Norwood's memoir, Phases, is the kind of celebrity memoir that makes you grateful for the music and furious about the machine behind it. My friend Kate and I revisit Brandy's cultural landmarks like Moesha, Cinderella, and “The Boy Is Mine,” then zoom out to the bigger question: what happens when an industry profits from a “good girl” image and leaves no room for a young Black woman to be human, messy, or still becoming. A big thread is the tension between what Brandy says and what she seems to avoid saying. We talk about how Phases feels careful, as if certain bridges still cannot be burned, even decades later. But we also highlight the memoir's strongest emotional material, especially around identity and image. When the memoir does go deep, it hits hard. The takeaway is not that Phases answers everything, but that it opens the door to better questions about artistry, survival, and what reclaiming your narrative really costs.Purchase Phases by BrandySupport the show:On PatreonBuy us a bookBuy cute merchSubscribe to the Babes in Bookland SubstackThank you for listening!xx, AlexConnect with us and suggest a great memoir!Follow us on instagram! @babesinbooklandpod
The Drift hack wasn't a one-off exploit. It was a patient operation spanning months, with nation-state actors working the conference circuit. Then Circle let the hackers take the money. Then, after $232 million in USDC was stolen, Circle declined to freeze the funds while attackers bridged them across chains for six hours during business hours. Michael Lewellen from Turnkey and Amanda Wick from VerifyVASP tackle what the Drift compromise teaches about operational security in crypto, why Circle's decision raises hard questions about stablecoin issuer responsibility, and whether the legal framework is forcing companies to choose between compliance and doing what's right. She graduates near the top of her veterinary class and still couldn't get hired... because she's a woman! That's where our conversation with memoirist Linda Rhodes begins and it only gets more vivid, entertaining, and frustrating from there.Linda and I talk about her book Breaking the Barnyard Barrier: A Woman Veterinarian Paves the Way and the reality of becoming a large animal veterinarian in rural Utah when sexism isn't subtle, it's stated out loud in job interviews. Linda takes us through the early spark that pulled her into farm work, to the gatekeeping she faced getting into vet school, to the pressure of being “the test case” for whether women can do the job. Along the way, we sit with the unglamorous truth of dairy cow medicine: freezing nights, no hospital nearby, no backup, and decisions that carry real consequences for animals and farmers. We also go deep on the memoir writing process. Linda shares why her mother's death pushed her to write, how she learned to stop writing like a scientist and start writing like a storyteller, and how she chose what grief to put on the page and what to keep private. From there, the story widens into career reinvention, women in leadership, animal health pharmaceuticals, entrepreneurship, and what it looks like to build a family-friendly workplace that actually works. If you care about women in STEM, gender bias at work, memoir, veterinary medicine, or the kind of resilience that's earned day after day, this conversation will stay with you.

Is life destiny or choice?"Drink from the Nile" is a phrase in Egypt that promises if you drink from the Nile river, you're destined to return. Katya Dunko's memoir, named for this phrase, is her refusal to let destiny be controlled by generational trauma. She broke the chain. We talk about the real story behind her jaw-dropping book: growing up in post-Soviet Ukraine, being stowed away on a train as a child, surviving a decade of opioid addiction, and later fleeing an abusive marriage in Egypt with her daughter. Katya doesn't frame herself as flawless or “inspiring” in a neat way. She names the shame, the people-pleasing, the desperate search for love, and the terrifying moments where her safety is on the line. If you care about women's memoir, addiction recovery stories, trauma healing, and what it takes to rebuild after emotional abuse, this conversation goes there with honesty and heart. We also get practical about the craft and the aftermath: what it's like to spend seven years writing a trauma memoir, why she chose a pen name, how self-publishing forced her to learn everything from editing to marketing, and why narrative therapy helped her reframe her past into resilience instead of ruin. The biggest takeaway is simple and hard: pain spreads unless someone breaks the chain.Listen, then share this with a friend who needs a reminder that a clean slate is possible. On October 9th, 1986, two nine-year-old girls vanished from a Brighton council estate after dark. Their disappearances sparked one of the longest and most complex investigations in British history - a case that would take over three decades to solve, require a change in the law itself, and prove that justice delayed doesn't always mean justice denied.SPONSORS -Hero Bread: This year, hit your goals without giving up your favourite bready dishes. How do you break free of one legacy to cement your own? We're back with a bite-sized Babes in Bookland mini review of Liza Minnelli's memoir “Kid, Wait Till You Hear This,” and it's equal parts warm, jaw-dropping, and quietly devastating. I went in expecting old Hollywood stories and iconic name-drops. I got those... but I didn't expect a brutally honest look at what fame can cost a family behind closed doors.I talk about Liza Minnelli the performer and cultural force: an EGOT-winning star of stage and screen, a voice people instantly recognize, and a public figure who showed up as an advocate during the AIDS crisis when many stayed silent. But the heart of her memoir is the private Liza, the daughter trying to survive a mother's addiction and mental health storms while other adults fail to step in. Her pages on caretaking as a child, living with dread, and trying to “protect” a parent will hit especially hard if you're an adult child of an addict or you've carried responsibilities that were never yours.Liza's account of her own substance use disorder and recovery, including rehab at the Betty Ford Center and the long road to real sobriety, is the most powerful part of the story and one of the most human celebrity memoir moments I've read. In October 1986, two young girls vanished in Brighton, Sussex, England. 9 year old Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway were playing in Wild Park when a monster murdered them. The main suspect was identified quickly, but missteps in the investigation led to an acquittal. Thankfully, investigators did not give up and over three decades later, the girls finally got justice. The case became known as “The Babes in the Wood” murders after a classic English children's tale and was one of Sussex's longest investigations. Click here to join our Patreon.
