End of Life stories from a nurse who has been helping patients feel hope and love in the midst of losing everything at life end. Becki Hawkins has been a nurse in many different healthcare settings and she has learned many life lessons while witnessing pain, suffering and loss. Life is a great gift but when the clock is ticking very loud, sometimes hope is the farthest from reality. Hope and faith are necessary to take the final steps in life with love and giving peace to those who are left behind. The rise in elder care, nursing homes and assisted living centers is leaving our most precious relatives in others care and it can be so devastating to all affected. While people are living longer these days, that does not necessarily mean it is a better quality of life or without significant health challenges that leave them unhappy, lonely and bedridden for days, months or years. My guest today, Becki Hawkins will be sharing stories from her decades of life experiences so you can feel that you are not alone in your experience and someone does care and is listening. Becki is the author of Transitions: A Nurse's Education About Life and Death which is a collection of her stories. Her book may be purchased here.Death is not to be feared but rather take a chance and live to the last minute with all the love and support you can find. Becki has a You Tube video of her speaking to a group in Arizona and you can find it here.

Becki Hawkins was a nurse's aide in a nursing home in 1971. That early exposure to patients and their stories motivated her to go to nursing school a few years later. She became a registered nurse and worked primarily in oncology and hospice. She is now retired and lives with her husband in rural Oklahoma and visits patients on occasion as a friend. She also enjoys writing a weekly column in a local newspaper, The Paper, entitled "Beyond Statistics". She has kept journals of patients and their stories for over 30 years. She has just published her first book, Transitions: A Nurse's Education About Life and Death, and is enjoying doing interviews on television, radio, over the phone and doing speaking engagements to share her patients' stories and the wisdom they shared with her. This is her first book. Becki has started her second book, "Blessings: Bedside Prayers for Loved Ones". And her third book will be volume two of Transitions: A Nurse's Education about Life and Death.
