A single injury or illness can change everything, but the best physicians plan ahead. Protect your income and secure your future before life makes the choice for you. Your career deserves protection—act now at https://www.doctorpodcastnetwork.co/setforlife____________In this episode, Dr. Jordan Grumet, sits down with host Dr. Bradley Block to address the public's eroded trust in science and medicine, fueled by perceptions of greed. Drawing on insights from his work in hospice care and financial independence advocacy, Dr. Grumet challenges the notion that physicians are profit-driven, emphasizing that purpose, not money, sustains medical practice. He cites the Harvard Adult Development Study, which shows interpersonal connections, not wealth, drive happiness, and argues that physicians persist through burnout due to a deep sense of purpose. To counter third-party exploitation by pharmaceutical companies, insurance firms, and private equity, he advocates for “shared storytelling” to close the intimacy gap between providers and patients. By sharing personal struggles publicly through blogs, podcasts, and poetry, physicians can rebuild allyship with patients, fostering a healthcare revolution to demand legislative change. Dr. Grumet's upcoming book, set for release in September 2025, explores these themes, urging providers to humanize their profession.Three Actionable Takeaways:Share Personal Stories Publicly – Use blogs, podcasts, or public speaking to share the emotional challenges of medicine, fostering empathy and trust with patients outside the exam room.Reframe Physician Motivation – When accused of being profit-driven, highlight data showing most physicians earn minimal pharmaceutical payments (less than $1,000 annually), emphasizing purpose over profit.Advocate for Systemic Change – Unite with patients to push for legislative reforms that curb third-party exploitation, such as insulin price caps, to improve healthcare access and affordability.About the Show:The Physician's Guide to Doctoring covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. Send us a textWhen life delivers its heaviest blows, how do we find the strength to keep going? Sylvia Morbeck's answer will leave you speechless. From the moment Sylvia awakened in a German hospital in 1992 to learn her husband and daughter had been killed in the car accident she survived, her path forward was forever altered. What followed was a journey through grief, alcohol dependency, and eventually a terminal diagnosis that would bring her to hospice care. Yet sitting across from me today, Sylvia radiates a peace that defies her circumstances."Don't build a house with somebody who's not willing to carry the bricks," she advises, displaying the raw wisdom that comes only from walking through fire. After losing her loved ones, Sylvia admits she stopped speaking to God for an entire decade, carrying anger that many who've experienced loss will recognize. The turning point came not in a dramatic revelation but through gradual surrender—a lesson in how healing often happens in the quiet spaces we create when we finally stop fighting.Perhaps the most extraordinary moment in our conversation comes when Sylvia describes her near-death experience two years ago. After a blood vessel burst in her stomach and doctors placed her in a medically-induced coma, she believes she visited heaven—describing marble streets, gold mansions, and complete freedom from pain. When she unexpectedly recovered and was walking the next day, doctors were baffled. "I believe our angels can take us out of here for a second, heal our bodies while we're out of it, and then when we come back, you're healed," she reflects.Today, Sylvia approaches hospice care with remarkable grace, taking each day as it comes while finding joy in family connections and even the simple companionship of her emotional support rabbit. Her message for those facing similar circumstances? "Take it a day at a time. Sometimes when you start projecting stuff ahead of time, things happen quicker."Listen to this episode if you've ever questioned how to find meaning in suffering, wondered what lies beyond this life, or simply needed a reminder of the incredible human capacity for resilience. You'll learn: What a hospice social worker is supposed to do (and NOT supposed to do). How to spot when someone is overstepping in care situations. Why lucid moments don't equal mental capacity—and how to trust the deeper patterns. How to hold your power when professionals or family try to make you question yourself. Send us a textOn a recent episode of a podcast, guest Amarillo Valle (pronounced Vi-yah) said, "We say, happiness is an inside job. Well, peace is an inside job, too!" His statement shook me. It woke me up from some deep slumber, a type of recurring dream where I kept putting others in charge of my experience, my joy, my happiness, my peace. Why did I give away my power? When did it happen? And how do I endeavor to take back the reins? I think Season Five of Curious Cat is that journey. Finding the bridge between what culture had said are two opposite forces, then harvesting the magic there. This week's exploration of the bridge is via music. A melody can move me to tears. Singing snaps me out of a funk. Humming makes my brain work better. Music is the way the dead reach out to me most often, maybe because it's the channel I'm open to receiving information on best.My first hint to the power of music was as a young mother. Once a week, I ventured out of the house to the local hospital and joined the moms class with my newborn. There were babies of many ages there, including some in the six to nine month range. I learned from the first class by observing, that age could get antsy, squirmy and the parent would stand up, hold the baby with two arms out front, and with the baby's back to them, the parent would rock forward and backward on their heels. That worked to calm the antsy babies. But if one baby began to cry, soon out of empathy, all the babies would join in. That's when we were instructed to sing, Twinkle, Twinkle, which the entire class did. And within seconds, all the babies quieted, eyes watching, calm. It was pure magic. Some of my most potent memories of my daughters as babies involved music, playing songs on a speaker or radio and dancing with them in my arms. I'm smiling ear to ear as I share this. Is there a song that makes you feel calm? Sad? Brings up a funny memory? Or annoys the heck out of you?Mine is Twelve Days of Christmas. If I'm preparing a meal for the family and that song comes on? Oh my gosh. It sends my anxiety through the roof. Music can help us fall asleep, a certain song can give us more energy than a cup of coffee,  enough to stay alert behind the wheel on a long drive, and impacts how we heal, recover, learn and rest. I've pulled the latest research from the internet and can't wait to share. Let's get into it.Show Sources & What to Watch/Listen/Read NEXTSound Heals, the movie, Thomas Durant (on Amazon for rental)The Healing Power of Sound as Meditation, Psychology TodayHave you tried the GoodPods app yet? From Hospice to Health: Inside a Bold Nonprofit Rebrand

Rebranding a nonprofit isn't just about new logos or fresh colors—it's an emotional journey deeply rooted in the mission, culture, and service commitment of an organization. James Dismond, CEO of Mirasol Health, formerly Hospice Care of the Low Country, joined host Julia Patrick to share the inspiring, often emotional, details of their transformative rebranding. For decades, Hospice Care of the Low Country was a dedicated nonprofit, caring for patients facing end-of-life scenarios. Yet, despite their essential services, the organization faced an existential challenge: staying relevant in an evolving healthcare landscape. A candid internal study revealed a stark truth: if no changes were made, they faced closure within five years.James vividly recalls the moment that changed his personal and professional trajectory. On his very first day, several patients passed away, confronting him directly with his deepest fear—death. Instead of turning away, he embraced this fear, turning it into a profound passion. James noted, “That fear has since transcended into my greatest passion, and I'm very blessed for that.”The rebranding initiative was far from simple. It was two years in the making, involving rigorous strategic analysis, extensive stakeholder consultations, and an honest assessment of community perceptions. The word “Hospice” was a significant barrier, fraught with fear and misunderstanding. This realization was a pivotal turning point. James explains, "The powerful messages we are getting back just touch my heart every single day."Ultimately, the staff themselves coined the new name, “Mirasol,” symbolizing "rare and radiant sunflower," beautifully capturing the legacy and spirit of the organization's enduring symbol—the sunflower. This rebranding was not merely aesthetic; it expanded the scope of services, adding chronic symptom management and soon behavioral health, significantly broadening their community impact. The process brought substantial internal shifts, compelling deep introspection and alignment from the board, leadership, and staff. My guest Gabby Jimenez and I are busting the hospice myths to get to the truth about end of life care. Because there are so many misconceptions about hospice care, many people don't choose to have care from a hospice team or they delay hospice care until very close to death. It's important to know the truth about all the aspects of hospice care - how medicines are managed, how morphine is really used for someone who's dying, when to start hospice, and Do Not Resuscitate orders work. Gabby Jimenez is a hospice nurse, end-of-life doula, death and dying educator, and author. Her website and Facebook page, which are both named The Hospice Heart, offer support for people who are either terminally ill, or caring for someone who is nearing the end of their life. Gabby has learned from being at the bedside of about 2,000 people who have taken their last breath. Her end-of-life doula training has helped her to truly understand the sacredness of death and dying, and what it means to be present for someone during that intimate and final moment. How prepared are you to support a loved one at the end of life? This is a question many avoid but is crucial for everyone to consider. In the Good Death Seminar Series, we equip you with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the journey of end-of-life care. We begin by sharing personal stories that illustrate the transformative power of being educated and empowered in this role. Together, we'll explore the history and purpose of hospice care, the impact of Medicare, and critical questions you should ask when selecting a hospice provider. Our goal is to make a meaningful difference, even if it helps just one person find peace and positivity in challenging times. As we continue, we confront the challenges posed by the rising number of for-profit hospices, questioning how profit-driven motives might affect the quality of care. Through poignant narratives like Mr. Penn's, we expose systemic gaps and the urgent need for patient-centered care. By reflecting on the invaluable contributions of hospice workers, we advocate for a renewed focus on collaboration to ensure dignified and supportive end-of-life experiences. With discussions on pain management, advanced directive documents, and the essential role families play, we aim to empower you with the tools needed for informed decision-making. Finally, we underscore the importance of seeing death not just as a medical event but as a profound human experience. Inspired by the wisdom of Cicely Saunders, we discuss how education, kindness, and support can restore the sacredness of both life and death. You'll discover resources like the Good Death, Good Life Masterclass and the Confident Caregiver Course, designed to equip you with essential skills for compassionate care.
