In this episode, we're joined by Casey Maxted—a man whose resume reads like an adventure novel. From his roots growing up on an Iowa farm to serving as a Green Beret in the U.S. Special Forces and later as an FBI agent tackling violent crime and counterterrorism, Casey has seen it all. But his story doesn't stop there. He's now channeling his experience and passion into entrepreneurship, running multiple businesses including Cold Zero Whiskey and Pillars of Valor Coffee, and, most notably, serving as Director of Operations at Warrior Rising, a nonprofit helping veterans find purpose through business ownership.Sawyer and Tork dig deep with Casey about his journey—exploring the sacrifices, camaraderie, and lessons learned along the way. Casey opens up about the transitions between his high-intensity careers, his candid reflections on team building and leadership, and why helping others—especially veterans and law enforcement—drives him. They also get into his family life, how growing up on a farm shaped his work ethic, and how he balances multiple projects with being an engaged dad.Of course, there's plenty of talk about whiskey (including some live tasting!), entrepreneurship, and the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. Whether you're a veteran, a business owner, or just someone looking for a bit of inspiration and wisdom, Casey's story is packed with insights and heart. Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:46–49And with that, the earthly mission of Jesus was completed and He ascended into Heaven. Or was it? Was His mission completed? Yes, but only in the sense that our Lord's work of destroying death and offering new life was accomplished by His life, death and resurrection. Human nature was now invited to share in a new life of grace.Prayerfully imagine standing on the mountain of the Ascension with our Lord. As you gaze upon Him, imagine that you were also present with Him throughout His public ministry. Imagine witnessing His many miracles, the way that He converted the hardest of hearts, the authority with which He spoke, His arrest, torture, death and then His Resurrection. Imagine seeing His hands and feet, once pierced, now radiating glory from those wounds. As you see our Lord in this way, imagine Him looking at you with love and saying to you that He has chosen to send you forth to the world to be a witness to Him and to all that you have seen and encountered. You are to go forth sharing the Good News of His life, death and resurrection with all whom you come in contact with. First, our Lord has, indeed, shared His entire life with you. By reading the Gospels, you become a firsthand witness to all that Jesus did and accomplished. His Word is alive, and it reveals His very Person to you, just as it did to His first followers. Second, Jesus does call you to go forth and to share this living Gospel with the world. Therefore, it is important to ponder how you can do such a thing. How can you give witness to the Resurrection of Christ? How can you change lives? How can you continue the mission of Jesus Himself? The promise given by our Lord to the disciples on the mountain of the Ascension is also a promise given to you. He is promising to send the Holy Spirit upon you so as to clothe you “with power from on high.” Only by receiving that power and using it fully will you be able to accomplish the mission that our Lord has given to you. Therefore, will you open yourself to the Holy Spirit and commit yourself to the continuation of Christ's mission? If we were to fully understand the mission we have received from Jesus, it would fill us with a holy fear. But too often the realization of what God wants of us fills us with an unholy fear instead. We think about evangelizing others, sharing our faith, witnessing to the truth by our actions, loving our enemies and living for the Gospel alone, and it can appear overwhelming. If that is the case with you, then know that this form of unholy fear can be dispelled so that the gift of holy fear can take its place. Holy fear is a gift of the Holy Spirit that inspires us to sense the awesomeness of God and the mission we are given by encountering it firsthand. It motivates us, encourages us and leaves us with wonder and awe. From there, this and every other gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to fulfill the unending mission of Christ. Reflect, today, upon the particular mission that God has given to you. Prayerfully look at Jesus as He stands on the mountain of the Ascension and looks at you. As He does, let Him reveal to you not only His very Person but also your particular sharing in His ongoing mission of sharing the Good News to the ends of the earth. Receive that mission with courage, joy and holy fear. Reverence it, savor it, ponder it and accept it. Commit yourself to this glorious sharing in the life of Christ by committing yourself to become a witness to Christ until the end of your life on earth. My ascended Lord, as You entered body and soul into the full and glorious presence of Your Father, You handed on to your disciples the duty of completing Your mission on earth. I hear Your call in my life, dear Lord, and commit myself to the glorious task of continuing that mission on earth. Please use me as You will and fill me with power from on high so that I may help share Your saving Word to the ends of the earth. Jesus, I trust in You. They travel to Cyprus, where they preach in synagogues and face opposition from Elymas, a sorcerer who attempts to prevent the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, from believing. Paul, filled with the Spirit, rebukes Elymas and temporarily blinds him. Witnessing this, the proconsul believes. Paul and Barnabas then continue to Pisidian Antioch, where Paul delivers a powerful message recounting Israel's history and proclaiming the glory of the resurrected Christ, which fulfills God's promises to Israel. Many Gentiles believe and rejoice, but Jewish leaders grow jealous, forcing Paul and Barnabas to leave the district. Despite the opposition, the truth spreads, and the disciples are “filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit guides Paul and Barnabas on a journey to share the truth about Jesus. Their commission serves as a reminder that the Holy Spirit is still alive and active today, with work prepared for us to do as well. Paul's courage in confronting Elymas demonstrates how God supports us when we stand against those who reject Jesus. His sermon in Pisidian Antioch highlights that God has been working to prepare redemption in Jesus Christ for generations. God's plan to raise Jesus from the dead and offer forgiveness to believers is greater, deeper, and more magnificent than we can imagine. We must share this message of grace and reconciliation, hopeful that there are many hearts longing for eternal hope. Benevolent Father, thank You for the work of Your Holy Spirit. He moves today in ways that differ from the supernatural urgings and miracles of the first century, but this does not diminish His presence in our lives. Grant us the wisdom to hear the teachings of scripture and to be attuned to the guidance You provide for us. Even among non-believers, give us the faith to remain vigilant for Christ. We thank You for Jesus' plan from the beginning. We exalt You for raising Him from the dead and promising us redemption now and future resurrection to eternal life. Thought Questions: - Is the Holy Spirit alive and active in encouraging you to take extreme action for Christ? If so, how does He accomplish this today? - Why was Paul so direct with Elymas? And why is it important to directly address people if they are negatively influencing others? - The resurrection of Jesus changed lives among the tenderhearted. Who will you tell about the power of His resurrection today?
What if there was a practice that helped us collectively witness and digest world events without becoming overwhelmed, indifferent, or numb? What if this practice could lead to new levels of collective healing? Thomas sits down with Kosha Joubert to discuss this revolutionary practice, called Global Social Witnessing. Kosha is the CEO of the Pocket Project, a non-profit organization co-founded by Thomas that's dedicated to growing a culture of trauma-informed care. Global Social Witnessing addresses our current lack of societal rituals for processing traumatic world events. It offers a way to move beyond individual overwhelm to collectively face challenges with greater presence, compassion, and agency for positive change. It joins people across borders and cultures to co-regulate and bring an embodied awareness to our collective nervous system. And you can do it from the comfort of your own home! Kosha also shares details about the Pocket Project's upcoming Global Social Witnessing Facilitator Training, which you can learn more about here: https://pocketproject.org/global-social-witnessing-training/?ref=86 Click here to watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:

Fran has to deal with a coworker who often is profane and obscene. In a meeting he makes a point of using the Lord's name in vain and then sarcastically apologizes to Fran for hurting her feelings. Jesus helps Fran to respond. "Actually, Bud, you didn't hurt my feelings; you hurt my heart," Fran answers. Suddenly the whole room gets quiet, and everyone is watching Bud and Fran. Nobody is really fond of Bud's vile language, but he's been in the company for years. So, no one confronts him, not even upper management. Bud gives a nervous laugh. "Hurt your heart? What do you mean, Fran?" "Well, I just mean when you use the name of Jesus like that, it really hurts me because he's the most important person in my life. He's my best friend. How would you like it if I used the name of your best friend—or someone close to you—in a derogatory way? I think it would hurt your heart, Bud, just like you hurt mine," Fran says. She thinks, Lord, were those words from you? I never planned to say that! "Oh, Fran, you take things too personally. That's just the way people talk," Bud replies, obviously unnerved by Fran's response. The air is full of electricity. Jesus nudges Fran, “It's time to get this conversation out of this public arena. Invite him to lunch.” “Invite him to lunch, Lord? Bud? I don't want to have lunch with him—and besides he would never accept,” Fran replies, but Jesus is insistent. Invite him to lunch, Fran. When Jesus tugs at her like that, she knows she has to obey, so Fran turns to Bud, "You know, Bud, this would make for an interesting conversation over lunch today. How about it—my treat?" "You're inviting me to lunch? You think you can endure me that long, Fran?" Bud asks with a big laugh. "I'm sure of it—if you think you can put up with me that long," Fran answers with a laugh. "Okay, you got a deal. I never turn down a free lunch," Bud replies. All through the meeting Fran communicates to Jesus about this upcoming lunch with Bud. “Lord, what am I'm going to say to Bud?” “You're going to become friends with Bud, Fran, and let him see what I'm like, living in you. How can you ever do that if you never get to know him?” Jesus explains to Fran. “Well, okay, but it's probably wasted effort. Bud's a hopeless case,” Fran thinks. “Oh, Fran, many times the people who look the least likely to want to know me are the ones most hungry. You may be surprised,” Jesus informs her. Fran is learning that witnessing begins with loving people, spending time with them, getting to know them—even the people who seem to be the least likely candidates.
If you've been reading all week, you've read the continuing story of Fran, who gave up a free night to listen to a neighbor talk about her broken relationship. The next morning as she talks with Jesus early in her day, she says, "You know, Lord, I had hoped I could tell Sue about you last night. She really needs you, Lord, but I don't know—she didn't seem to want to listen. She just wanted to talk about Ed." "Fran, you're sowing seeds. You did the right thing to listen to Sue. You showed her love, and that's what she needed last night," Jesus assures Fran. "Yes, but I don't want her to think I approve of her relationship with Ed. She was living in sin, and it's a good thing he left, you know?" Fran responds. "Yes, I know, but listening to someone's hurts doesn't mean you approve of their lifestyle. Don't worry, Sue knows how you feel about her relationship. Last night she needed to know that you cared and loved her unconditionally," Jesus replies. "Okay, but I hope someday to be able to lead her to know you, Jesus." "Yes, well, you certainly earned your right last night, Fran, so keep praying for her," Jesus says. And after a few more minutes in prayer, Fran gets her day going, a little weary, but feeling good about her evening with Sue. As she arrives at the office, Fran remembers there's a department meeting this morning. "Oops, better get into that meeting before I'm late," she says, and hurries to the conference room. It seems the only chair available is right next to Bud, head of operations. Fran is not terribly fond of Bud. He's crude, to put it mildly, and uses profanity a lot, not to mention dirty jokes when he has a chance. "Oh, Fran, don't tell me you're going to sit next to me," Bud says as she sits down. "Be careful, you might catch something.” Bud always tries to get to Fran, and it seems as soon as she gets near, his language gets worse. She tries to ignore his comment, but he immediately uses the Lord's name in a blasphemous way. Fran winches at his words. "Oh, 'scuse me, Fran, I forgot you're a Jesus freak, didn't mean to hurt your feelings," Bud says, with obvious sarcasm. Lord, Fran whispers to Jesus, am I supposed to just sit here and let Bud get by with this profane use of your name? “Stay calm,” Jesus replies. “I'll tell you what to say.”
What does it truly mean to be in service to others, your community, and yourself? Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to speak in front of 150 mental health therapists and group practice owners. They are compassionate leaders who manage dedicated teams committed to helping individuals navigate life's challenging moments with thoughtfulness, healing and care. Witnessing their dedication inspired deep reflection on how we show up not only for others, but also for ourselves. In this episode, I share insights from this meaningful experience, exploring the importance of efficient structures and mindful self-care practices that allow these professionals to sustain their vital work. Drawing from my own personal journeys through divorce, miscarriage, managing the impacts of alcoholism, and living with cancer for the past 23 years, I highlight the universal need for feeling seen, heard, and supported. Join me on today's Wise Walk as we ask ourselves these questions. Are you in service of yourself or only focused on serving others? How are you honoring your emotions and what calls to you? Are you giving yourself space to heal from past experiences you still carry? What does being in service of your own healing and needs look like right now? How can you support your emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being today? As you walk forward, what area of your life is calling for more attention? How can you be in service of others and still hold space for yourself? Are there areas of your life that feel out of balance? Have you gone all in at work and postponed your personal needs? Have you created the space and structure to return energy to yourself? What does commitment to yourself look like in real terms? What can you map out or follow through on to meet your current needs? How are you setting intentions and creating boundaries that support you? Are you currently balanced in serving others and serving yourself? Do your efforts feel sustainable or are they tipping too far in one direction? Is it time to set a new intention or reevaluate your current focus? Are you clear on your needs and creating awareness around them? How are you setting boundaries that honor your commitments and values? How can others support you when you're clear about what you need? Thank you for joining me on this Wise Walk. As you move through the week, remember to honor your needs, set clear intentions, and stay aligned with your heart. I'll see you next Thursday until then, get your stride on. In this episode: [06:11] Over the past few months, I feel like I've been called to be in service of my family and to support them. It felt aligned, because I love my family and want what's best for them. [07:15] I now feel fatigued, and I'm going to take the next month to be in service of myself. It's time to get back to my own supportive healing practices. [08:49] My family has needs, but I need to set up healthy boundaries so I don't lose myself in the process. [11:03] I love how this collective of 150 brilliant humans were committing to themselves just by attending the conference. [12:06] I also loved the opportunity to network. [13:53] Cherish the successes, the whoopsies, and everything in between. [16:18] How we care for ourselves and others are all interwoven. [17:52] Another amazing thing that happened is we got more Striders. [19:05] There's a heartbeat behind these self-reflective questions, because this is an opportunity to go within and find the answers within your own beautiful heart. After the white smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney on May 8, we turned on the TV here at the Jesuit Conference HQ in Washington and landed randomly on ABC News. We immediately heard a familiar voice: It was Fr. James Martin, the Jesuit author who certainly needs no introduction to AMDG listeners. In addition to writing bestselling books like Come Forth about the biblical character of Lazarus and working at America Magazine and Outreach, an LGBTQ Catholic organization, Fr. Jim is a frequent commentator on the Catholic Church in the secular media. ABC news sent him to Rome to be part of the team covering the funeral of Pope Francis, the conclave, and the first moments of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Fr. Jim on the show to share about his experiences in Rome this past month and to bring us behind the scenes. Fr. Jim also knows Pope Leo XIV a little bit, as they sat at the same table at the Synod on Synodality general assembly last year. He shared his impressions of the Pope and how he thinks he might be an agent of healing especially in the American church. Finally, Fr. Jim shared some of his memories of Pope Francis, who was a big supporter of Fr. Jim's ministry. We know you'll enjoy Fr. Jim's perspective on witnessing Church history in Rome this month. Fran has run into a neighbor who needs a friend, and although Fran had planned a quiet evening for herself, at Jesus' prodding, she gives Sue a call. "Hi, Sue, this is Fran. Listen, I don't have anything I have to do tonight. Why don't you come on over in a little while. The kids go to bed around 8:30 or 9:00. We'll have some time then to talk. I've got good ears, Sue, and I'm willing to listen," Fran invites Sue over. "Yeah, I'm sure; see you later,” Sue responds. As she hangs up the phone, Fran smiles. "You know, Lord, I didn't really plan to do that, but when I started thinking about Sue and how I'd feel if I were in her shoes, well..." Fran's voice trails off. "Yes, Fran, you just put on compassion. You have prayed that I would help you to be a compassionate person, so I just answered that prayer," Jesus tells her. "When you care about someone, when you feel compassion toward them, it's not so difficult to be a servant to them, is it?" "Oh, I didn't think of it as being a servant; I just wanted to help her. I hope I can," Fran replies. "True servanthood," he says, "is when you are a servant and don't even realize it. And that happened, Fran, as soon as you stopped thinking about how inconvenient it was and how you had a right to have a night all your own. Instead, you thought about Sue." "I get the picture, Lord," Fran replies. "Keep praying for compassion, keep putting myself in other's shoes, and day by day, you will answer my prayer and make me more like you—compassionate. It really is amazing to see how you can change me,” Fran says. She helps the kids with their homework, and as they're getting ready for bed, Sue knocks on the door. It turns out to be a late night for Fran, as Sue talks for several hours and pours out her hurt and pain from her broken relationship. Fran falls in bed about midnight, exhausted, praying for Sue as she goes to sleep. Jesus reminds her Sue is desperate for love. She doesn't know his love, so she's looking for it in a man. That happens a lot, doesn't it? She and Jesus talk a bit about Sue's dilemma, and before she knows it, Fran has reached for the phone and dialed Sue's number. Fran continues with Sue: "I'm sure this has been very hurtful for you, Sue. Sorry. I didn't know." "Well, maybe I could talk with you sometime when you have time. I know how busy you are..." Sue looks at Fran with hopeful eyes. "Of course, we'll get together soon, I promise," Fran replies, and with that they each head for the check-out stand.

Have you ever wondered how you can befriend a non-believer whose lifestyle is sinful, without appearing to approve of the sin? Fran is facing that dilemma. On the way home from work, she runs into a neighbor, Sue, who tells Fran that her live-in boyfriend has just moved out. Sue is obviously upset and wants to talk, and Fran promises to call her soon. In the check-out line, Jesus says to Fran, "You know, Sue is really needing a friend right now, Fran. Why didn't you invite her to come over tonight and talk?" "Tonight? Well, Lord, you know this is the first night in two weeks I've had to myself. I just want to be alone and read after the kids go to bed," Fran replies, sounding a bit defensive. "Yeah, I understand, Fran, but can you afford to pass up an opportunity like this to reach out to someone who was obviously asking you to help her?" Jesus asks. "Well, I'll call her and set up a date next week for pizza or something," Fran answers, hoping that will satisfy Jesus. "Next week?" he replies. "Next week is a long time off when you're hurting like Sue is." As she heads for the car, Jesus doesn't say anything else, but Fran is very uncomfortable. She pulls into her driveway, and says, "Lord, you really think I should give up my one free night and ask Sue over tonight? I mean, don't I have a right to one night to myself?" "A right? Well, think about that, Fran,” Jesus says. “I gave up my rights to all that was coming to me when I left heaven to come to earth. The essence of the Christian life is that we give our rights over to God and allow him to run things for us. You remember I said, 'Not my will, but thine be done.'" Fran remembers in a flash all she has been learning about giving up her rights and being a servant. But when the rubber hits the road, as it has this evening, she finds it a bit difficult. "Guess I really don't like being a servant sometimes, Lord," Fran replies, as she sits in the car a few more minutes. "It's not always convenient, is it," Fran says with a smile. "No, sometimes it's terribly inconvenient and requires sacrifice. But the rewards are good, Fran," Jesus reminds her. As she makes dinner for the kids, her mind again goes to Sue. She thinks Sue must be devastated. Ed was her whole life, and now he's gone. Fran knew he would never marry her, but Sue thought for sure if they just lived together for a few months, then he'd want to get married.
The Coin Part 2 - Ep166 In this walking podcast I unpack more about the concept of The Coin and the influence of our emotional state on our riding and racing. In medical QiGong, we understand that the emotions reside in the organ system. If we are unaware of this, it can be problematic. The first rule of athletics is to Know Thyself and this means understanding your own emotional state. Witnessing emotions is the first step in claiming agency over your adult life. Without the willingness to look at our own emotions, we remain a child. There are many children walking the planet in adult bodies. Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.

Can something as simple as kindness really change someone's view of God? Simple acts of love and kindness are how Jesus shows up in people's lives. When someone feels seen, heard, and cared for—especially in their mess or suffering—it softens hearts. It opens a door. That's when people start to wonder, “Why are you doing this?” And we get to say, “Because Jesus loves you.” When we meet people in their suffering with compassion—feeding them, clothing them, praying with them—we're not just meeting physical needs, we're revealing the heart of Jesus. And when people experience that kind of love, they start to believe again that God is real, that He sees them, and that He hasn't forgotten them. In today's episode, I sit down with Mandy Busch and Amanda Pfeiffer to share the incredible story of how their parish community responded after an EF4 tornado struck. Instead of just reacting, they mobilized hundreds—each person using their unique spiritual gifts—to serve with compassion, leadership, and faith. We talk about how discovering and using our charisms—the gifts given by the Holy Spirit—can be a game changer for unity and fruitfulness in mission. When we stop comparing and start collaborating, the Church comes alive. Like a puzzle, every piece matters. And when we come together in love, the result is powerful. Knowing how to witness to others is often a perplexing question for many of us. Our friend Fran is facing that issue. This on-going story of Fran and Jesus is told as though Jesus was with her all day, and she talks to him and he to her. Of course, Jesus is with us all the time, but sometimes we forget. Hopefully, these stories of Fran and Jesus will help us remember to practice the presence of Jesus everyday everywhere. Fran is hurrying home from work. "It seems like I always have to stop at the store for something," Fran thinks. "You know, Lord, if I didn't have to buy groceries, I'd be rich," she muses. “But with a growing nine-year-old boy, he just seems to never get enough. I'm thankful you told us not to worry about what we eat or wear, because you know we have need of these things," Fran says to Jesus. She is reassured by the promise Jesus will never leave her or forsake and has indeed promised to supply all her needs according to his riches in glory. She pulls into the grocery parking lot and dashes into the store, practically running through the aisles to find the things she needs. In the midst of her hurry, she hears a voice, "Hey, Fran!” She turns and sees her neighbor. "Sue, hi. How are you? Goodness, I haven't seen you in several weeks. Good to see you," Fran says in a friendly way. "Yeah, I've been thinking about calling and stopping in to talk, but—well, I know how busy you are with the kids and everything," Sue says. "How about your job, Sue? Did you get that new job you were hoping for?" Fran asks. "No, I decided not to even apply for it, Fran," Sue answers. "I'm sure I didn't have a chance, and besides. . ." her voice trails off, and Fran can tell something is wrong. "What's wrong, Sue? You look a little upset," Fran encourages her to talk. Sue looks around, uncomfortable talking in the middle of the store. "Well, Ed moved out a couple of weeks ago, and I've just been upset, I guess." "Oh, I see," Fran replies. "I'm, well I'm...” What can I say, Lord? Fran asks Jesus. I'm not sorry Ed moved out; they shouldn't have been living together anyway. “Just show her some love, Fran,” Jesus responds. “You can show love for people even if you don't approve of what they're doing.” Fran continues with Sue: "I'm sure this has been very hurtful for you, Sue. Sorry. I didn't know." "Well, maybe I could talk with you sometime when you have time. I know how busy you are..." Sue looks at Fran with hopeful eyes. "Of course, we'll get together soon, I promise," Fran replies, and with that they each head for the check-out stand.

They discuss the challenges modern Christians face, including the startling statistic that 98% of Christians in America never share their faith outside of their immediate families. They highlight two main problems: the lack of witnessing and the often forgotten role of the Holy Spirit in many churches. Through scriptural examples, particularly from the Book of Acts, they showcase the transformative power of the Holy Spirit and the necessity of full surrender and consecration to experience true spiritual empowerment. They argue that without daily dying to oneself and being filled afresh with the Spirit, believers cannot effectively witness or make disciples. The conversation underscores the critical need for revival and a personal challenge to be a true burnt offering for God's glory. Join them in a heartfelt prayer of surrender, and take the first steps toward becoming a vessel for the Spirit's power in your life. They go back and forth between light-hearted banter and weighty truths, creating a natural rhythm that feels both grounded and inspiring. They kick things off with a laugh, joking about how hard it can be to start episodes smoothly—before easing into the heart of the conversation. The big focus? The Church's need to make more room for the Holy Spirit—not just in Sunday services, but in everyday life. Jason shares how some churches unintentionally sideline the Spirit, joking about the tendency to worship “God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Bible.” Josh jumps in to remind us that real power—boldness, witness, and transformation—comes from the Holy Spirit. They unpack Acts 1:8, where Jesus tells His followers they'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes. Josh points out a sobering stat: 98% of American Christians never share their faith outside their family. The answer isn't trying harder—it's surrendering deeper. Josh describes how the disciples went from hiding in fear to boldly preaching the gospel after being filled with the Spirit. He draws from Romans to say the same power that raised Jesus now lives in us—meaning we're equipped for far more than we realize. A key theme in the episode is daily surrender. Josh shares a vivid metaphor: believers “leak,” so we need to keep coming back for a fresh filling. They talk about how true revival starts when we lay ourselves down—day after day—like living sacrifices. They also explore the idea that you can't have Pentecost without Calvary. In other words, the power of the Spirit comes through death to self. Drawing on Old Testament sacrifices, they paint a picture of what it means to live fully surrendered—acknowledging our tendency, like a goat, to crawl off the altar. Community plays a big role here too. Josh emphasizes how we need each other to keep living that surrendered life—through encouragement, accountability, and prayer. Toward the end, they call out how the Western Church often gets caught up in debates and performance, losing sight of the simple, powerful truth: Jesus rose, and His Spirit lives in us. They warn against letting the flesh take the lead again and call for a return to Spirit-led living. The episode wraps with lyrics from a Casting Crowns song that challenge superficial faith and call for genuine heart change. It's a fitting close to a conversation all about real transformation—from the inside out. Jason and Josh finish with a heartfelt prayer, asking for the Spirit's guidance, power, and presence to shape every part of our lives. Bottom line: If you're hungry for deeper discipleship and lasting impact, it all starts with surrender—and the Holy Spirit is ready to lead the way.

For marine biologist, writer, and lay theologian Rachel Jordan, the ocean has never just been a backdrop—it's been a living metaphor for her relationship with God. Raised in a Christian household, Rachel's wonder at tide pools and the mysteries of the deep developed alongside her budding faith. She explains how the intrigue of peering into tiny, brimming tide pools mirrored her fascination with glimpses of God's character: “There was something vast and impressive that laid beyond, that I wanted to explore.” Just as the tide pools hinted at whole worlds awaiting discovery, Rachel found that both faith and science propelled her deeper: “Being a Christian has propelled me further into a desire to understand science ... and being a scientist has, I believe, made me a better Christian.” Rachel may study the ocean's wonders, but her path has been anything but fearless. “I've had this recurring nightmare ... of getting eaten by sharks ... I was just terrified of it,” she confesses. And yet, her marine biology career meant close encounters with those notorious creatures were not just possible, but sometimes necessary. What's remarkable is how God met her in those moments of dread—not by removing the fear, but by transforming it. As she recounts, “The beauty is that God took this thing that I was afraid of and converted it to open-mouthed wonder.” Rachel's transparency normalizes fear as a companion to growth, whether learning to dive or facing daunting new callings. Her encouragement? “It's okay to feel [fear]; it might be something that God uses in your story to do something really big and to show you more of who he is.” Lessons of Grief and Hope from the Coral Reefs Perhaps nowhere does Rachel blend her scientific vocation and spiritual conviction more poignantly than in her stewardship of endangered corals. She describes the “magic castles” of Dry Tortugas National Park—towering, endangered pillar corals—where she devoted herself to preservation efforts. Witnessing the corals' decline from disease was, for Rachel and her fellow scientists, “tragic and deeply impactful.” Yet, as a follower of Christ, Rachel finds hope in the heartbreak. Not only does she grieve in community, but she sees loss through the lens of biblical resurrection. She connects the “white skeleton bony structures” of dead corals to Ezekiel's vision of dry bones: if God can bring those bones to life, can't he also restore coral reefs one day? For Rachel, loss becomes an invitation to hope: “All of creation is eventually going to be restored, remade ... I just wonder what he's going to do next.” Divine Lessons from Buddy Dives and Seahorses Diving, for all its wonder, is fraught with risk, which is why marine biologists always practice “buddy diving”—entrusting their lives to a partner in the depths. For Rachel, this is a living parable: “God is our ultimate dive buddy ... he's not only capable of rescuing us in danger, but he promises to never leave or forsake us.” Other creatures—even a seahorse named Mr. Snuggles—have revealed to her the joy of relationship, not just provision. “I want to, like Mr. Snuggles, draw close to him and just sort of curl up with him and hang out together.” Scripture: A Dive Site Brimming with Life What better metaphor for the Bible, Rachel muses, than a vibrant dive site—unchanging in position but always full of surprise, beauty, and life? “When I read God's word ... there's always something new to discover.” It's a place to keep returning with fresh awe and an explorer's heart. The Deep Calls to Deep Whether or not you'll ever strap on a snorkel, Rachel's conversation is an invitation: to see the world as shot through with the beauty and presence of its Maker, to find him not only in safe harbor but also in the open, sometimes scary waters of life, and to trust that every loss and fear can be met—and even redeemed—by the God who made oceans and corals... and calls each of us out into the deep. MEET RACHEL JORDAN Rachel G. Jordan is a professional marine biologist and lay theologian. A self-professed Jesus-loving coral nerd, she was raised in Idaho and has since traveled the globe chasing her passion for faith and science. She has an MS in marine biology and ecology from James Cook University (Australia), a BS in ecology from Seattle Pacific University (USA), and a certification in biblical studies from Bodenseehof Bible School (Germany). In addition to working as a coral biologist for the US National Park Service, Rachel has worked in marine aquaculture research, organic chemistry laboratories, veterinary research facilities, the pet industry, and a museum. When not diving or writing, she can be found reading C.S. Lewis, growing wildflowers, and exploring creation with her husband. More at https://rachelgjordan.com/ MORE ABOUT “IF THE OCEAN HAS A SOUL” The ocean is filled with scientific discoveries―and God's presence. For marine biologist Rachel Jordan, both science and Scripture are means of knowing creation and Creator. In If the Ocean Has a Soul, Rachel considers the natural world through a spiritual lens, meshing marine biology with biblical truths in a keen and current take on faith and science. With engaging storytelling and deep knowledge of the Bible, she asks and answers questions like: How can Christians reconcile religion and science when the two seem opposed? What do suffering and death teach us about the character of Jesus? How do we care for the environment when there seems to be little hope for repair? What do the ocean and its sea creatures, specifically, reveal about God? In these pages, Rachel recounts fascinating aquatic phenomena alongside the sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic stories of animals she has known. You'll lose yourself in the shadows of an underwater labyrinth; hear spiritual wisdom from a great-grandmother coral the size of a Volkswagen Beetle; and fall in love with Porky, the pudgy porcupinefish greeting visitors at the Windjammer shipwreck. And along the way, you'll see how the promise of restoration unfolds in both physical and spiritual ways. Rachel's thoughtful scientific and theological insights encourage us to know the Creator of the sea and everything in it.
